At BlueScope, our communities are our homes and ourhealth, safety, environment and community responsibilitiesare integral to the way we do business.

This report outlines our FY2014 performance in each ofthese areas of responsibility, and I encourage you to readit.

SAFETY

The company’s goal of Zero Harm continues to be at the core of everything we do.

In June 2014 we were saddened by the tragic death of a contractor, Mr Shen Bin, at our Xi’an, China buildings site. A fatality – whetheremployee or contractor – is a tragic experience for those left behind – family, friends, colleagues, leaders. We have increased our efforts tostrive even harder to sustain safe workplaces.

During 2014 we launched a major new employee engagement program, ‘Switch on Safety’, across the company to refocus leaders onsetting safety expectations and standards and to encourage employees and contractors to continue to improve our focus on safety.

This initiative has promoted a renewed commitment to safety at a grass roots level in all our businesses in 17 countries across the world.

We again recorded a lost time injury frequency rate of less than 1.0 for FY2014, which means less than one lost time injury per millionhours worked.

Safety and our goal of Zero Harm continue to be our number one priority.

ENVIRONMENT

All BlueScope people work hard to reduce the environmental impact of our operations. We have an excellent record, for which we arerecognised by Governments, regulators, and communities across the regions where we operate.

We are committed to improving our environmental footprint and help others to do the same through our products and solutions.

We have invested more than $600 million in environmental improvements in the last 20 years, and continue to spend in the order of $50million each year to maintain and operate pollution control equipment.

SUSTAINABLE STEEL

Sustainability is about more than energy use or carbon dioxide emissions. How a product is created is important but it is equally importantto consider how that product is used over its life, and how it is disposed of at the end of that life.

BlueScope believes in the life cycle approach to sustainability. This means assessing the impact of a product over its entire life, fromcradle-to-grave, including raw material extraction, product manufacture, product use, disposal or recovery at end-of-life and transport.

COMMUNITY

Our communities are our homes. BlueScope contributes to local communities where we operate around the world through collaborativepartnerships with a focus on shelter, safety, arts and culture, environment, education and disaster relief.

I am sure you will find this year’s Community, Safety and Environment Report informative.

At BlueScope, we know that our success as a company depends on how effectively and responsibly we workwith our employees and the communities in which we operate to meet our health, safety, environment andcommunity commitments.

The Health, Safety and Environment Committee (HSE Committee) is a Committee of the Board of Directors formed to assist the Board infulfilling its oversight governance responsibilities in respect of health, safety and environmental matters.

Due to the importance of health, safety and the environment to BlueScope, all Directors are members of the HSE Committee, which meetsregularly.

BlueScope strives to progressively improve our HSE performance. We aspire to zero harm to our people. We are committed to the efficientuse of resources, reducing and preventing pollution, and product stewardship. We strive to be valued corporate citizens in our communitiesand respect the values and cultural heritage of local people.

To meet these commitments, we have put in place management systems and standards. We identify, assess and manage our risks. Safety is our number one priority at BlueScope. Across the Company, from our manufacturing anddistribution sites to our offices, our focus is on Zero Harm. The results are very evident - we havenow reached a point where we incur less than one injury resulting in lost time for every millionhours worked, and our efforts have lowered the likelihood of injury across BlueScope's workforce.

Our safety beliefs form the basis for achieving our goal of Zero Harm:

Working safely is a condition of employment

Employee involvement is essential

Management is accountable for safety performance

All injuries can be prevented

Training employees to work safely is essential

All operating exposures can be safeguarded

BlueScope's comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety Management System underpins all our operations. The system focuses onthree basic areas:

Safe and healthy people

Safe systems

A safe and tidy plant

This system protects the health and safety of our employees, customers, contractors, visitors and the public. Each business is required todemonstrate compliance to the Safety Management Standards which have been established under this Management System.

BlueScope's safety improvement initiatives have led to a substantial reduction in injuries. We are making good progress overall, with manybusinesses reporting noteworthy health and safety results. However, we remain vigilant at all times in pursuing our goal of Zero Harm.

Essential to our health and safety strategy is the continuing development of our leaders, as is the continued implementation of riskmanagement practices, behavioural health and safety audits, reporting of incidents and near misses, and identifying and preventing 'at risk'behaviour and conditions.

SAFETY PERFORMANCE RECOGNISED

BlueScope’s safety performance is recognised in many of the countries where we operate around the world. Awards received duringFY2014 include:

1. New Zealand Steel & Pacific Islands – Winner best Health & Safety initiative of the New Zealand Safeguard Workplace Health & SafetyAwards 2014 for Contractor Safety.

2. Steelscape Kalama – Winner of 2014 ‘Best Practices in Safety’ by National Coil Coaters Association.

3. BlueScope Training Centre Thailand - honourable mention for ‘outstanding achievements in Construction Industry WorkforceDevelopment’ in the 2014 Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) 2014 workforce awards category

In addition, the annual Managing Director & CEO Zero Harm Awards recognise the achievements of many BlueScope people on our safetyjourney.

SWITCH ON SAFETY

During the year a major new employee engagement program, ‘Switch on Safety’, was launched torefocus leaders on setting safety expectations and standards and to encourage employees to refocuson safety.

Switch on Safety means working to BlueScope’s safety beliefs and remembering why all employeeswork safely. Every day employees switch on to what is important to them – whether that be family, ahobby or a prized possession, or plans for the future. So, when they are at work, employees mustswitch on to safety to ensure they continue to enjoy those things that are important to them outsidework. The Switch on Safety program also encourages employees to ensure that workmates andcolleagues also 'switch on' to safety.

Switch on Safety is about everyone taking responsibility for safety at work and at home – looking out for each other, team mates andfamily. It’s an opportunity for teams to share stories, experiences and personal actions, and discuss ideas to find safe ways of working.

Switch on is about re-energising the way we at BlueScope think about safety and our Zero Harm goal.

HOLDING ON TO KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Safety reviews undertaken by the Corporate Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) team have highlighted the potential to improve theskills and competencies of safety leaders at some relatively new business operations.

Tapping into the vast knowledge and experience of long-standing BlueScope operations and safety managers, the corporate safety teamdeveloped the Business Leaders Safety Coaching Program, which calls on a group of recently retired operations managers with decades ofexperience between them, as well as experienced operations and safety managers. Together, they impart to front line leaders their depthof OH&S knowledge, and their understanding of the right processes and necessary tools.

In the last quarter of FY2014, 48 employees participated in 17 safety coaching programs held in most BlueScope businesses and regions. The recent retirees, bringing a wealth of experience and skills to the program, are using their knowledge to coach and mentor the nextgeneration of BlueScope leaders.

SETTING THE STANDARD IN CONSTRUCTION SAFETY

At BlueScope, we all believe that good safety management is good business. To continue improving our safety performance, we mustfocus on safety leadership, safe behaviour and managing critical risks.

As many businesses within the Global Building Solutions (GBS) footprint now offer construction services to customers, the business has anew safety risk profile, particularly in areas such as working at heights, handling beams and frames, and temporary bracing.

Page 11: HOME OVERVIEW HEALTH & SAFETY ENVIRONMENT … · The Health, Safety and Environment Committee (HSE Committee) is a Committee of the Board of Directors formed to assist the Board in

In November 2013, GBS introduced Global Requirements for construction safety to help manage the new safety risks – a rule book forbuilding safely. Now, over 600 construction managers, project managers, site product consultants, site supervisors and contractors haveactively participated in construction safety workshops to become familiar with the Global Requirements and how to use them. There wasvery positive feedback, and many suggestions were made on how the Requirements could be improved.

In response, and following further consultation with safety and construction professionals at all levels across the business, the GlobalRequirements have been refined and relaunched as a new set of nine Requirements covering safety risks such as erecting, connecting andtemporary bracing of steel, elevated lifts, roofing and decking, and separating people and equipment. The new Requirements are moreengaging and practical for the businesses to use.

The Global Requirements apply to all projects where GBS is providing construction services, whether the work involves GBS employees, orcontractors directly engaged by GBS to carry out construction work, and demonstrate the power of connecting the knowledge and bestpractices of BlueScope’s businesses across regions.

PROMOTING A SAFE INDUSTRY

BlueScope Thailand has teamed up with the Department of Skill Development and the Ministry of Labour to launch the BlueScope TrainingCentre, a comprehensive training facility aiming to ensure there is a sufficient and capable workforce for the steel construction industry.

Enrolment is free, and a certificate of achievement from the Department of Skill Development is presented to all students who successfullycomplete the course.

“At BlueScope Thailand we recognised the challenge of maintaining a capable and skilled workforce in the Thai construction industry, especially in the areas of installing wall and roof steel metal sheet and lightweight steel structures,” says Teerapong Raksasang, VicePresident Health Safety & Environment Thailand. “We are very proud that the training programs offered by our BlueScope Training Centretake both quality and safety standards to a new level.”

The facility, the first of its kind in Thailand, is based on the successful model of a BlueScope training centre in Australia, and is nowwelcoming interested mechanics and representatives from dealers and business partners. The programs are divided into three levels –Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. Students in all levels not only study the theories but also engage in practical workshops that deliverhands-on experience in a variety of topics including occupational safety, occupational health in workplaces, general product knowledge andinstallation techniques. There is also a Mobile Training Unit, self-contained in a truck fully equipped with the necessary tools andmaterials, which visits remote areas of Thailand to provide on-site training.

In FY2014, about 400 trainees participated in the centre’s training programs, and this is forecast to increase to 750 participants by FY2016.The BlueScope Training Centre reflects BlueScope’s genuine commitment to improving the skills of the Thai workforce, and to giving backto its communities.

In Australia, BlueScope submits annual reports under the National Energy and GreenhouseReporting Scheme and to the National Pollutant Inventory.

NSW facilities with Environment Protection Licences publish emission monitoring data on theBlueScope website; New Zealand Steel participates in the New Zealand Emissions TradingScheme and Steelscape Rancho Cucamonga, in North America, participates in NOx trading.

During FY2014 BlueScope notified relevant authorities of 24 environmental non-compliances. Over the last five years there has been a significant improvement in environmental compliance, with reportable non-compliances reducing by almost 50 per cent.

In FY2014, BlueScope received two fines for environmental issues at the Port KemblaSteelworks, totalling A$3,000, relating to wind generated dust and stack emissions.

The former stainless steel manufacturing site at Port Kembla contains legacy contamination, and during FY2014 BlueScope commenced remediation and is working with NSW EPA todevelop a voluntary management proposal for this site.

On 13 October 2014, a fire broke out in the Sinter Plant Waste Gas Cleaning Plant at the PortKembla Steelworks, destroying the fibreglass discharge stack. Emergency response systems

worked as intended and no one was injured. The Sinter Plant was able to restart under alternative operating conditions, while continuing tocomply with Environment Protection Licence limits. The Waste Gas Cleaning Plant has now been recommissioned and the Sinter Plant hasreturned to normal operations. A comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire has been conducted, and an incident reportsubmitted to the EPA.

BLUESCOPE BUSINESSES MARK WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2014

THAILAND

Many BlueScope and Lysaght employees joined in a range of activities to celebrate World Environment Day. Activities included planting ahedge of pikhul that is highly efficient in absorbing mono-nitrogen oxides; and a ‘Do It Yourself’ contest which challenged everyone tocreate items from recycled materials. Prizes were awarded for a multi-functional basket, DIY bag, fancy chair and DIY clothes line. Allparticipants enjoyed the game which focused on environment issues.

The annual World Environment Day activities at BlueScope Thailand, with participation from employees and their families, encouraged thedevelopment of a positive attitude towards conserving nature and reducing solid waste generation.

INDONESIA

BlueScope Indonesia has united with environmental organisations and campaigners to protect a local coastal ecosystem against the effectsof climate change.

Indonesia, like every developing country, has a high rate of population growth and development, but all this progress comes with a price. Inaddition to the regular rainy season, Indonesia and its islands are vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods and high waves caused bystorms, now thought to be exacerbated by its location in one of the regions of the world most affected by global warming.

In cooperation with the Regional Environmental Agency, BlueScope Indonesia participated in the celebration of World Environment Day bydonating 1000 mangrove seeds for planting at a local coastal beach. Mangrove forests help stabilise the ecosystem of coastal waters, protecting the coast and river banks from erosion. This ecosystem plays a vital role in mitigating climate change, as mangrove forests areconsidered one of the most effective carbon sinks in the natural environment.

AIR – MAINTAINING AND IMPROVING AIR QUALITY

Air quality is an important environmental issue for the community. BlueScope continues to work hard at maintaining air quality andminimising emissions to air from all operations, and in particular focuses on minimising any effect from process disturbances.

AIR MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

Many complex processes are involved in the manufacture of steel products, and stable operation of these processes is required to avoiddisturbances and minimise air emissions. The Company strives to achieve this through process control and maintenance strategies.

BlueScope has invested in a wide range of specialised equipment to minimise air emissions, including:

Baghouse / filtration systems

Chemical treatment

Thermal oxidisation

Scrubber systems

Dust suppression

BlueScope extensively monitors air emissions to gauge adverse effects on the environment; identify improvement opportunities and ensureoperations are within environmental licence limits. Investigations are initiated when emissions are detected above expected levels.

Air emissions data is reported to government bodies that regulate environmental licences, and much of this data is published on publiclyaccessible web sites.

PERFORMANCE

Air emissions of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and Particulate Matter less than 10 microns (PM10) are important due totheir known impacts on air quality and the community. As with previous years, BlueScope continues to report trending data on thesemeasures, with estimated FY2014 NOx and SO2 emissions slightly lower and PM10 emissions similar to those reported in FY2013. Thesmall decrease in NOx and SO2 emissions is related to slightly lower production.

NOTES

The estimated emissions have been calculated using data, where available, from BlueScope's global operations.

Late in 2011 BlueScope closed major operating units at the Port Kembla Steelworks in NSW and at the Western Port Works in Victoria. These closures resulted in significant reductions in emissions to air reported in FY2012.

In FY2014 BlueScope reported 11 air related non-compliances to the relevant authorities, eight less than FY2013, and received two finestotaling $3,000 related to air emissions at the BlueScope Port Kembla Steelworks site. BlueScope continues to investigate additionaltargeted measures and practices to minimise non-compliances.

On 13 October 2014, a fire broke out in the Sinter Plant Waste Gas Cleaning Plant at the Port Kembla Steelworks, destroying thefibreglass discharge stack. Emergency response systems worked as intended and no one was injured. The Sinter Plant was able to restartunder alternative operating conditions, while continuing to comply with Environment Protection Licence limits. The Waste Gas CleaningPlant has now been recommissioned and the Sinter Plant has returned to normal operations. A comprehensive investigation into the causeof the fire has been conducted, and an incident report submitted to the EPA.

WATER IS ESSENTIAL TO LIFE AND IS ONE OF OUR MOST VALUABLE NATURAL RESOURCES.SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT IS INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT TO COMMUNITIESGENERALLY AND TO COMPANIES LIKE BLUESCOPE WHO RELY ON WATER.

For several decades BlueScope has deliberately and systematically implemented a range of successful water saving projects. For example,on average over 97 per cent of the water used at the Port Kembla Steelworks is now either recycled water or salt water. We continue toexplore and implement water conservation initiatives to reduce our reliance on scarce community water resources.

BlueScope has been steadily reducing emissions to water, resulting in continued improvement in the quality of water that leaves our plants. We continue to work at extending this record of improvement. In addition to very tight operational controls, BlueScope aspires to eliminateemissions to water from any process disturbances.

WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Water consumption and quality are closely monitored to identify where water savings can be made; to assess whether there is any impacton the surrounding community and to ensure operations are within environmental licence limits.

Water efficiency is a key consideration in the design of all new BlueScope facilities. Meanwhile, existing operations seek to improve waterefficiency and explore alternative sources, such as recycled water.

Most of the water consumed at our largest steelmaking facility, Port Kembla Steelworks in Australia, is sea water. Since 2006, theSteelworks has also been using recycled waste water supplied by Sydney Water. Access to these recycling water options has resulted inreduced consumption of precious fresh water for most process cooling requirements. BlueScope’s Western Port operation in Victoria hassimilarly commenced using recycled water to reduce dam water consumption through an agreement with South East Water.

At our steelmaking facility in Glenbrook New Zealand, each day around one billion litres of water is in circulation throughout thesteelmaking and finishing operations, with a daily fresh water make-up rate of approximately two per cent to maintain required water qualityand replace water discharged. To achieve maximum conservation, water is cleaned, cooled and recirculated many times in each process, with make-up water supplemented by rainwater collected across the 190 hectare site.

A variety of control mechanisms to reduce water emissions have been installed throughout BlueScope's operational facilities. The Company

operates a multitude of water treatment plants to minimise the potential for discharge water to have an adverse effect on the environment.Steel manufacturing processes are monitored and studied to maintain water quality. Closed loop cooling systems maximise recycling andminimise fresh water usage.

PERFORMANCE

Expanding operations at our New Zealand ironsands mines in Taharoa and Waikato North Head has increased the amount of fresh waterdrawn from local rivers. This has resulted in an increase of almost 25 per cent in BlueScope’s total fresh water consumption.

Additionally, fresh water consumption and intensity across our steel manufacturing facilities has increased in the past year. At ourGlenbrook facility, dam flushing has occurred to control recycled water conductivity. At our Port Kembla facility, the fresh water demandfrom the blast furnace cooling systems was elevated due to operational requirements, and there was a reduced availability of recycledwater due to maintenance activities.

BlueScope continues to use available recycled water, and as a result between 6,000 and 7,000 ML of fresh water is saved each year.

In FY2014 BlueScope reported 11 water related non-compliances to the relevant authorities, one fewer than FY2013, and there were nofines or prosecutions. The Company’s water-related compliance record has improved substantially over the last five years.

WASTE TO LANDFILL CONTINUES TO BE AN INCREASING GLOBAL CONCERN, WITH ANNUALGENERATION OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE CURRENTLY IN THE ORDER OF 1.3 BILLION TONNES,AND EXPECTED TO INCREASE TO APPROXIMATELY 2.2 BILLION TONNES BY 2025.

WASTE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

One of BlueScope’s focus areas is to minimise waste to landfill through sound waste management practices that produce environmentaland economic benefits.

This is reflected in BlueScope’s waste management strategies, which are driven by a waste hierarchy designed to minimise waste andextract the maximum practical benefits from our by-products. To dispose of waste is the least preferred option, with increasing preferencegiven to recycling, reusing, reducing and avoidance.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF OUR RESOURCES

During FY2014 BlueScope’s three steelmaking facilities recycled 1.4 million tonnes of steel scrap (33% of total global raw steel production)to make new steel products. Recent improvements in steel making practices at the Port Kembla steelworks have allowed an increase inthe use of scrap for steelmaking of 4.6 per cent. We continue to work to balance the economic viability of changes in production methodsto increase scrap use.

The integrated steel making process generates several by-products, and processes have been developed to transform these materials intomarketable products which are sold as feeds to other industries, including road building and cement production.

Material efficiency at BlueScope has remained consistently high over the last five years, averaging 96.4 per cent.

INNOVATIVE DESIGNS FOR REUSE AND RECYCLING

BlueScope Steel makes products that can be used in designs fordisassembly and reuse. These are components of a building, orentire buildings, that are designed with the intention of reuse ratherthan demolition. For example, the MacArthur Centre for SustainableLiving in Australia was designed for disassembly using reusableand renewable materials.

The design incorporates whole sheets of steel for the roofing andmuch of the walling to maximise opportunities for those sheets to beused again in the future. When the steel is no longer needed, it canbe recycled back into new steel.

INVESTING IN DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH STRENGTH STEELS

BlueScope Steel has successfully developed high-strength steelproducts, so that the same function is achieved using fewer rawmaterials. This is known as dematerialisation. For example, roofingthat was once manufactured at 0.55 mm thick, is today made fromhigh-strength COLORBOND® steel 0.42 mm thick – a reduction of24%.

Steel framing is another example of design innovation thatmaintains functionality with less material use. Some sections ofinternal house framing that used to be 1.20 mm thick are only 0.6mm thick today – a saving of 50%.

STEEL BY-PRODUCTS PAVING THE WAY

Slag used for road-making is one of the by-products of theintegrated steelmaking process at Port Kembla Steelworks, and hasbeen used in the newly-completed Northern Road in south westernSydney.

The Northern Road had seen a steady decline over time, and withan estimated 20,000 new homes planned for the region bringingextra traffic in the next five years, it was time for an upgrade to adual carriageway.

Australian Steel Mill Services (ASMS) manages the slag-handlingcontract at Port Kembla Steelworks, and is contracted to collect andtreat molten slag from blast furnaces and the steel makingprocesses. New South Wales authorities contacted ASMS todiscuss using its materials in the road upgrade. State governmentengineers had used slag road bases in the past with great success

and were well aware of the advantages over natural materials.

In all ASMS supplied 20,000 tonnes of slag for the road project.

BLUESCOPE VIEWS CLIMATE CHANGE AS A GLOBAL ISSUE THAT NEEDS A GLOBAL RESPONSE.WE ARE COMMITTED TO MAKING OUR CONTRIBUTION AND OUR PLANTS EMPLOY MODERN,ENERGY EFFICIENT EQUIPMENT WHEREVER FEASIBLE. THE COMPANY IS SEEKING TOPROGRESSIVELY REDUCE ITS ENERGY AND GREENHOUSE GAS INTENSITY.

The Company aims to achieve greenhouse gas intensities at its steelmaking facilities that are within the lowest quartile of comparablefacilities.

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND THE STEEL MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Steelmaking, by its very nature, consumes a large amount of energy and generates significant volumes of greenhouse gases (GHG)through the use of coal and coke as both chemical reductants and energy sources in the iron making process. This chemical processaccounts for more than 80 per cent of the greenhouse emissions from, and energy consumed within, an integrated steelworks.

Carbon, in the form of processed metallurgical coal (coke) and pulverised coal, is the reducing agent used to convert iron ore to iron in ablast furnace. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are generated as unavoidable by-products of this process.

The laws of chemistry, physics and thermodynamics dictate the amount of carbon used in the blast furnace. Current carbon usage is closeto minimum practical levels due to our efficient furnace operations and practices. Greenhouse gas generation is heavily influenced byproduction output. BlueScope strives to progressively reduce its emissions and continues to play an active role in the global steel industry’sefforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We are committed to reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of our processes and improving the energy efficiency of our operations.

CURRENT CONTROLS

BlueScope actively participates in voluntary and legislated programs of regional and national significance in the countries where it operates.Given the highest energy use and greenhouse gas emission intensity are related to the larger iron and steelmaking operations in Australiaand New Zealand, most of the programs are centred on these activities. BlueScope participates in the following legislated schemes:-

Australian National Greenhouse & Energy Reporting Regulations – mandatory reporting

The NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) – mandatory obligations, potential certificate (credit) generation

The Renewable Energy Target (RET) – mandatory obligations

The New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme – mandatory obligations

The Australian Emissions Reduction Fund – methodology and safeguard development

In addition, BlueScope's plants employ modern, energy efficient equipment wherever feasible, and the Company seeks to progressivelyreduce its energy and greenhouse gas intensity.

Within existing facilities, a range of initiatives have been implemented, or are under investigation, to improve energy and greenhouse gasperformance. These include:

An energy efficiency focus on business improvement processes to give all employees the opportunity to contribute to improving ourenergy profile

Increased training and awareness of energy and GHG issues within the organisation

Internal and external benchmarking and technical exchanges to learn and share experiences in energy efficiency

Capturing and reusing by-product gases from steel making and painting for heating and to generate electricity

Developing process models to ensure fuels are used efficiently

Improving process control

Optimising operational and materials efficiency, and process yields

Decommissioning or upgrading older, inefficient equipment

Optimising steam and gas systems

Increasing use of natural light in buildings

Turning off or idling equipment when not in use

Increased use of environmental measurement tools to monitor processes

A range of case studies from across BlueScope’s operations illustrate that theseinitiatives are widespread, and that lessons are being shared and implemented acrossthe global footprint.

Examples include China’s Suzhou coil paintline, commissioned in 2006, which has been able to focus on its natural gas use and, throughprocess modifications and automation of oven air control systems, has achieved a 23 per cent improvement in energy productivity.

Similarly, in Australia’s BANZ manufacturing operations, employees from different sites and departments have implemented 85 individualenergy efficiency opportunities in FY2014. These projects, largely focussed on reducing natural gas and electricity consumption, have beenachieved through process optimisation, including the simple option of turning off idle equipment when not required, and have yielded a fiveper cent reduction in gas and electricity demand.

As with previous years, BlueScope reports trending data on the total energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) for itsglobal operations. However, to ensure meaningful intensity data is presented, energy and GHG intensities are now provided specifically inrelation to BlueScope’s global steel making facilities, rather than the wider downstream operations which process, rather than produce, rawsteel.

Steelmaking facilities account for 92 per cent of BlueScope’s total energy usage, and correspondingly 91 per cent of total GHG emissions.

Following the major restructuring of BlueScope’s Australian operations in FY2012, all subsequent data represents operations under the newstructure and the significantly lower production baseline. As illustrated in the charts, BlueScope’s total energy usage and GHG emissionshave reduced significantly, and the absolute and intensity levels have now largely stabilised for this level of operation.

BlueScope’s net annual energy demand has reduced by around 55 PJ (35%) since FY2011, and the combined Scope 1 and 2 GHGemissions have similarly reduced by over 6 MtCO2-e per annum (38%). Both reductions are significant in the context of the AustralianManufacturing Sector’s total energy demand, and Australia’s GHG emissions abatement targets.

Despite this, BlueScope remains focussed on identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in both absolute and intensity measuresfor energy use and GHG emissions.
