Home-Start Camden Review 2014-2016 Updated

Introducing the work 2014-2016Reflecting on Home-Start Camden’s (HSC) work is what we do for funders’ reports and bringing all the
achievements together is what we do for this document. This review covers the activities and events
of the charity from 1st April 2014 to 31st March 2016. It is hugely satisfying to see how many great
moments we have created for our families in Camden. Over the past two years we have supported
hundreds of parents and children and for the vast majority helped prevent their difficulties becoming
crises. Our volunteers have walked with the families through their troubled times, helped them cope
more ably, increased their parental confidence and ability to get out into the community to make use
of Camden’s great facilities.
The financial year 2014-15 was the final year of three major funded projects that supported our home-
visiting family support and volunteer management services. The Big Lottery supported our work from all
referral agencies and self-referring families, the Henry Smith Charity grant supported our partnership
work with two local GP surgeries and other health professionals and the Camden Volunteering Fund
helped increase staff capacity and the number of volunteers we trained and supervised so that we
could help even more families under pressure.
Whilst we were completing these projects our Trustees,
particularly Liz Sturgeon and Jane Fawcett, were busy
helping to write funding applications for 2015-2018 and
raising funds from events and donors. We are delighted
that the hard work and commitment paid off and that
we secured funding from the Big Lottery Reaching
Communities fund, the Henry Smith Charity and John
Lyon’s Charity to cover 75% of the costs of our family
support and volunteer management services until March
2018 and 50% up to May 2019!
2015 was a big milestone for the organization as we celebrated our 20th Birthday with our families
and volunteers in a number of exciting ways. We hope you enjoy seeing a sample of our work from
2014-2016 to give you a flavour of Home-Start Camden’s role in the borough. At a time of austerity
the role of HSC is more than ever crucial in preventing family breakdown, aiding child protection and
enabling parents to function to the best of their ability for their children and their community. We
believe our preventative work saves families and is a long term investment.
HSC Manager, Cathy Carpenter and Co-Chairs, Malcolm Mackenzie and Liz Sturgeon
One Mum’s feedback below summaries the impact of HSC’s support:
“I feel I have support, I don’t feel lonely, I don’t have family here but they [HSC] are my family.
They listen to me and help me. Confidentiality helps as this makes me feel secure. I also feel
more confident and stronger and they inspire me and tell me I am a good mum.”
“Everyone is very warm, kind and welcoming. It’s a great organisation and they are doing a
great job, I know there are other services but to be honest it’s nothing compared to Home-Start.
It feels like a family and they give you all the support without feeling time restricted or judged.
They are doing a great job and I am so grateful for all the time I have had from my volunteers
and staff.”
“It’s a wonderful service--- I would not be this person if it wasn’t for your service.” - Parent

The families we support Our priority remains working with families in their homes with support from our network of trained
volunteers. We are working with more families with complex needs and many are experiencing
difficulties resulting from the changes to the welfare benefits system and the London- wide housing
crisis. Feelings of isolation, mental health issues, such as post- natal depression, low self- esteem, and
difficulties accessing services are the most common needs cited by parents seeking support from HSC.
Many families also seek help because they are affected by disability, are lone or first- time parents or
need practical help with twins, so timely regular support is highly valued.

What Referrers told us“I am writing to you because I want to thank you for the incredible work that you do. I think
Home-Start is a fantastic organisation and I really think this should be recognised. Your recent
email has made me realise that even when there is a shortage of volunteers, you diligently
continue to meet the needs of families and I am so grateful for your service. I think I can safely
say that I am not the only one that thinks this.” (Health Visitor)
“It’s a really crucial service that we use
often…It is important to mention that
families like and rely on HSC support.”
(Children’s Centre)
In 2014-15 we received 100 new
referrals and in 2015-16 we had a 26%
increase with 126 new referrals from
all the various sources:
HSC’s Evaluation Report2012-2014“It’s a life changing experience.
Brilliant, fantastic. All the good words can’t describe this valuable empowering service.”
(HSC former parent)
During 2014, HSC conducted an evaluation of our family support and volunteer management services
by reviewing all the data and feedback we gather for our funded projects. The report “Volunteer
Support for Camden Families – Evaluation Report 2012- 2014” confirms that our family work in all
areas has been very positive. Here are some of the findings:
• 91% of families managed child behaviour better
• 88% of parents reported greater involvement in their child’s development.
• 94% of parents reported that their children had improved mental health
• 79% were coping better with their children’s physical/mental health
• 93% of parents in families supported by HSC felt less isolated
• 97% reported that they were more involved in the community and able to
• access mainstream support services.
For the volunteers, the increased skills and confidence gained have resulted in more than a third (37%)
finding employment or study during the two year period.
Referring agencies report high levels of satisfaction with the charity’s contribution. In particular they
reported an increased awareness of HSC in hard to reach and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups.
Our Big Lottery grant assessor was very complimentary about our Evaluation report and its findings.
We were able to use it to share our success with funders, supporters and the public via our website in
April 2015. Many thanks to Trustees and volunteers for their contribution to this evaluation.

March 2016. The full version is available from our website www.homestartcamden.org.uk and has been sent
to Companies House and the Charity Commission.
Treasurer’s reportThe total funding received between 1st April 2015 and 31st March 2016 amounted to £184,092 a
decrease of £57,854 on the previous financial year (2014-15) of £241,946, largely due to changes in
the timing of grant payments. The primary sources of funding were generous grants received from
the Big Lottery Fund, The Henry Smith Charity, Tanza Trust and Santander Foundation and brought
forward grant payments from John Lyon’s Charity, Awards for All and Volunteer Centre Camden. The
total resources expended in 2015-16 were £232,423, an increase of £8,063 on the previous year’s
income of £224,360. The increase was primarily due to higher costs for families and volunteers
activities in our 20th Birthday year, which were covered from project funded grants. Final reserves as
at 31st March 2016 stood at £119,603 of which £24,322 was restricted and £95,281 was unrestricted.
The trustees present their annual report and accounts for the year ended 31 March 2016 and are
satisfied with the performance of the charity during the year and its financial position at that date.
They consider that the charity is in a position to continue its activities during the coming year and the
assets are sufficient to fulfil its obligations. Angela Pober, Treasurer

Our grateful thanks to our freelance fund-raiser, Tom Blackie for his fantastic support and to

Sharing good practice overseasIn February 2016, Home-Start Camden staff, Jackie
Blasi and Saiqa Pandor, hosted overseas visitors from
The Committee for Children and Culture at Billund
Municipality, Denmark. The committee and key civil
servants were visiting to find inspiration for the
development of future schools, daycare and culture
services. They had heard about our work in Camden and
were interested in understanding how we supported
families in difficulties.
VolunteeringWe recruit volunteers from all parts of the Borough, from diverse backgrounds, with varied experiences
to reflect the complexities of the families. Volunteers are primarily parents themselves and, due to
benefit changes, are increasingly under pressure to return to work. As a result, we are finding it more
challenging to recruit and retain volunteers with free time.
Home-Start Camden Co-ordinators deliver four courses of eight-day Volunteer Preparation Courses
annually so we trained 59 new volunteers in 2014-15 and a further 40 in 2015-16. Feedback about
HSC’s training and home-visiting shows the broad benefits for this other set of parents:
“It is run in a very professional manner…and
I feel I am being well prepared to become
a HSC volunteer. Hopefully a successful
one and couldn’t have done it without the
preparation course.
These hours I spend with a family are
rewarding for me.... I enjoy my volunteering
more than my paid job...
We make a difference in the family to parents
and they don’t feel under pressure and they
feel confident to talk...”
John Lewis Partnership (JLP) Golden Jubilee TrustFrancesca Butler, a JLP staff member selected HSC as the charity that she would work with on
secondment for 44 days in Spring 2015. She brought energy, creativity, know- how and good humour
to everything we asked her to do. Specifically she designed the Birthday Booklet and helped organise
the second Bangla Banquet. A huge Thank You to her and to the John Lewis Partnership Golden
Jubilee Trust for the magnificent contribution to HSC.

Manager receiving Liz’s award in March 2016).
Liz is one of the 14,808 amazing home- visiting
volunteers and 2,448 trustees who gave their time to
Home- Start to support families across the UK this year.
Over 80 volunteers and 10 trustees regularly give their
time in Camden alone each year.
Liz was nominated for the award by HSC staff for
helping the charity raise £1, 710,418. Cathy
Carpenter, manager, said, “Liz has kept Home-
Start Camden going since 2009. She helped
develop Home- Start Camden’s fundraising
strategy and wrote funding applications with me
and a few days of freelance fundraising expertise.”
In a written message to all the winning volunteers, HRH Princess Alexandra said, “This occasion is a
wonderful way to celebrate all that can be accomplished by working together with one common purpose
– to help parents and children to cope and thrive as they face very difficult circumstances.
“I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you and, this evening, I extend my personal thanks to all
Home- Start Volunteers for your compassion for families and children and for your gifts of time, energy
and care. My special congratulations go to this year’s winners and runners up. Thank you for your
selflessness and kindness and for the very great difference you make to families.”
Promoting Home-Start Camden (Outreach)Each year staff deliver 45+ presentations on HSC to Children’s Centres, Health Centres, Community and
Women’s Groups, coffee mornings for parents in schools and Social Worker and Health Visitor team
meetings. The aim is to reach parents that may need our help and to recruit volunteers. In addition
we attend Volunteer Fairs to spread the word about our home- visiting and other volunteer roles.
Strategically, HSC also attends various meetings with other professionals to increase awareness of our
role such as with the North Central London Maternity Liaison Group and Camden Parents Council.
Website RedesignIn March 2015, HSC redesigned its website to improve promotion of our services, volunteering roles,
donor opportunities and funding information. This was funded by a small grant from Camden Council
Sustainability fund. Please visit us at: www.homestartcamden.org.uk

Chain Reaction This project, funded by the Lottery Awards for All programme, celebrated the creativity of our parents
and volunteers. After planning sessions a huge range of activities were started including; ESOL classes;
tapestry; visiting local parks for walks; a dream board session; photograph collages of 20 years of
HSC; a recipe book for groups; an outing to London Zoo; an international map of HSC parents and
volunteers. Some activities involved small numbers, some are on- going (ESOL and the cookbook) and
the trip to the zoo had 90 people to enjoy a great day out!

HSC’s 20th Birthday Party
The 20th Birthday Party Celebration event in June 2015 involved over 160 people. Planned with parents
and volunteers much of the work from Chain Reaction went on display and entertainment came from
a Peruvian Puppeteer, face painting, children’s arts and crafts, music for children and belly dancing!
Everyone agreed it brought families together from diverse backgrounds to celebrate the charity’s 20
years in Camden.
Family-friendly volunteering including Groombridge Outing
Volunteer Centre Camden funded us
to make our volunteering role even
more family friendly. We were able
to increase our advertising, provide
volunteers with lunch for training days
and invite them and their own families
to join our outings and events. HSC
was able to book two coaches to take
100 parents, children and staff to
Groombridge Place on 12 August 2015.
Everyone had a brilliant time in this
wonderful park - The Enchanted Forest;
17th Century Formal Gardens, bird and
drama displays and canal boat rides.
For some families this was their only
trip outside of London all year!

Local Fundraising Activities and Donations From April 2014 to March 2016 a wide range of activities have
taken place to raise unrestricted funds for Home Start Camden.
Trustee Jane Fawcett, assisted by highwayman Aelfric, had her 70th
birthday tea party and raised over £1,600 by requesting donations
rather than presents. Jane also undertook a modelling job for
Pegasus Life, which was published in the property section of the
Daily Telegraph, raising £500 for HSC. Our Co-Chair, Liz Sturgeon
held a children’s book sale and puppet show at her house raising
over £200 for HSC.
In November 2014 HSC received £1000 donation from Lloyd’s
Bank Community Fund and in May 2015 the Santander Foundation
gave us a £5000 grant. Donations from the Hampstead Hub and
other supporters brought in several thousand more to cover all our
costs. Another hugely successful Bangla Banquet with Bangladeshi
celebrity chef, Tommy Miah, feeding 230+ guests was held in
May 2015, which raised over £8300. HSC also launched its ‘100
Campaign’ to secure 100 regular donors to help us continue our
highly valued family support work. If you wish to join them please
visit www.homestartcamden.org.uk
Two younger supporters deserve special mention.
Joe Paley, son of a HSC volunteer, raised £855 plus gift aid by
climbing the Three Peaks Challenge. That’s the UK’s highest peaks
– Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike and Snowdon–in 24 hours!
Local schoolgirl, Lana Drake, aged 11, her grandfather and her 6
foot Guy Fawkes raised £136 for us in Kentish Town.
In December 2015, we raised £1118 from another fun Salsa Night,
singing carols outside Kentish Town tube, selling Jane’s legendary
nut roasts and by Clare House setting up a partnership with Secret
Artist NW5 who donated 20% profits from Christmas card sales.
Trustee Jane Fawcett hosted an Oranges and Lemons lunch in March
2016, which raised over £813! We thank everyone for continuing to
support us in so many different ways.

Quality Assurance and the futureHSC had its Quality Assurance (QA) Review completed by Home-Start UK, which evidenced 98%
of 128 mandatory and key performance indicators. The report stated: ‘The scheme was able to
demonstrate excellent practice as the scheme has established a successful partnership project,
funded by Henry Smith, with GP practices to offer support to families to alleviate pre-and post-
natal depression. This project also assists the scheme in meeting outcomes set with the National
Lottery.’
For 2015-19 HSC’s services will focus on the following outcomes for our beneficiaries:
• Parents will report improved parenting abilities, greater self confidence in bringing up their children and reduced parental stress.
• Parents affected by ill-health or learning disabilities will increase their levels of coping and engagement with their children.
• BAME families and pre- and post-natal mothers will be less isolated, have increased self-esteem and access more community support.
•Volunteers will gain skills, training and experience giving them increased confidence, a greater sense of achievement and opportunities to access employment or further study.
•Increasing our capacity and sustainability for the future via recommendations from 2015 Quality Assurance, Finance and Organisational Reviews so that we can deliver services to Camden families for many years to come!
