DESIGN BRIEF
TASK 1: Copy out and complete the Design Brief in your exercise book. Remember to underline your headings. Brief: You are to design and manufacture an MP3 amp circuit and design a prototype for the packaging (case) of the electronic circuitry and components.
TASK 2: Spider Diagram of ideas. Write down as many differ-ent ideas as you can for the shape and style of the packaging (case). Remember you can base your idea on anything!
TASK 3: Using the internet find 3 different types of MP3 speakers. Copy and paste the pictures into word and below each picture produce a table and write about the following items.

PRODUCT ANALYSIS
TASK 4 : Having completed your Product Analysis explain in your own words which MP3 speaker system you would buy out of the three and explain the reason for your choice. Use the following words in your paragraph: Materials Ergonomics Aesthetics Cost
TASK 5: Questionnaire A questionnaire is used to find out the opinions and ideas of others. It is a research tool which is used in industry. In your exercise books write the definition for each of the following words. You may find it easy to present it in a table?

QUESTIONNAIRE AND RESULTS
TASK 6: In your exercise books produce a questionnaire in-cluding 8 questions. Each Question must be based on the words form the previous task. Remember in a questionnaire en-sure to write questions where there are several answers to choose from E.g., Materials If you were to buy an MP3 speaker which of the following materi-als would you prefer it to be made from? Steel Aluminium Plastic Wood
Task 7: When you have completed your questionnaire type it in Word and print out 3 copies. Then get 3 people to complete a questionnaire each. Record their answers and use EXCEL to produce Pie Charts or Bar Charts. Your teacher will teach you how to use the software.

SPECIFICATION
TASK 8: Now you have a completed your research use the in-formation gathered to write a specification for your MP3 player. Remember a specification is a series of statements describing what your final product MUST or MAY have. Use the words from Task 5 to help produce your Specification. You may wish to present it in table like below:
It MUST be……... It MAY have…...
Materials
Cost
Function
Aesthetics
Reliability
Target Group
Ergonomics
Safety

TASK 9: In your exercise books draw 4 different designs for a possible MP3 speaker. Annotate your designs referring to your specification as much as you can. Remember to look at the Assessment for Learning posters in your class-room. Include colour on your designs.
DESIGN IDEAS
TASK 10: On A3 paper draw a picture of the following tools used for soldering and write their correct name in a table in your exercise books.
SOLDERING

SOLDERING
Bend the legs on the component so they can fit into the PCB.
Place the components into the PCB ensur-ing you put it in in the correct way up.
Clamp the PCB to the table (or stick down with Masking tape) and heat the leg of the component with the soldering iron..
. Add solder to the joint whilst the solder-ing iron is still in contact with the compo-nent leg.
Ask your teacher to check the joint then trim with the side cutters.
Task 11: Write the following sentences in your ex-ercise book in the correct order of sequence.
Page 8
SOLDERING
Task 12 : Using the powerpoint on soldering follow the instruc-tions and build your circuit for the MP3 speaker. Remember to check your component values and make sure your joints are not dry. You need to build small volcanoes! See diagram below.
Task 13: Once you have completed your circuit you need to check your circuit to see if it works! Connect your circuit to a 9 V battery and plug it into your MP3 player. Not working?- Check the following! • Dry Joints! - Might be holes visible in the joint • Capacitors in the PCB in the correct position • Chip Holder soldered incorrectly. Check position! • Resistors in the wrong position on the PCB • Loose connection on your multi core wires.

LASER CUTTER (CAM)
Task 14:Once you have completed your circuit you need to use the Laser Cutter to cut out the housing for the Amp cir-cuit. Your teacher will give you a demo on how to use it. Be-fore using the Laser Cutter study the following photographs and answer the questions on the next page.
CAD/CAM– Software + Laser Cutter Honeycomb cutting bed
Inside the Laser cutter. Material is placed in top the left corner. This is called Computer Aided Manufac-ture
Materials that can be cut on the laser cutter: Acrylic (3mm) , Paper, Card, Textiles, MDF

The image on the left is a screen print of the software used to design the casing for the electronics. Once this is completed it is sent to the laser cutter. The software is very easy to use. This is called Com-puter Aided Design
This tool bar is used to create basic shapes, insert text, add labels and apply colours to images.
This tool bar is used to change the draw-ing point on the screen. You are also able to magnify in and out on the screen. There are also delete options available.
