Help your childrensave for the future

RRSP contributions can later be used as a source of funds for a down-payment on a home.

Our children have more than weever had.

But we also have morechoices than our parents did, espe-cially when it comes to investingand planning for our children’s fu-ture.

As parents, we should startplanning on how we can help ourchildren get into home ownershipearlier.

Let’s take a look at all themoney our kids get from birthdays,special accomplishments or evenjust as a treat.

Also, many of our childrenwork part-time. But with kids beingkids, it’s pretty normal for most ofthem to spend it as fast as they getit.

My suggestion is to helpyour children understand their op-tions and how important it is to startsaving now for their future.

Review their spending bylooking at three months of theirbank statements.

Your first step is to reviewyour children’s income and esta-blish how much RRSP room theyhave to contribute.

As an example, my sonworked at a grocery store for yearswhile going to school and had tonsof RRSP room accumulated.

Rather than giving cashgift, we started making contribu-tions to his RRSP.

You can even ask your fa-mily to make contributions to yourchildren’s RRSP instead of othergifts.

These RRSP contributionscan later be used as a source offunds for a downpayment on ahome.

Another tip is to invite amortgage specialist to a familymeeting.

Ask them to give youexamples of what a mortgagewould look like on a beginnerhome.

Explain the downpayment,interest rates and all the termino-logy of home financing.

Let them show your familythe benefits of planning now andhelp your kids understand how thisRRSP will help them out in the fu-ture.

After this meeting, you andyour children will have a better ideaas to what kind of downpaymentwill be needed.

It may even help your chil-dren understand the future benefits- that these contributions into theirRRSP will help them get into theirfirst home sooner, even if thatdream still looks far away.

By teaching your childrenhow to save now, you’ll be settingthem up on a path to success.

Tips for home officeWe all have paperwork to file away. Maybe you're not running a Fortune 500 company fromyour basement, and you don't have employees punching in and making widgets at your kitchentable, but chances are, you and your family still conduct "business" at home.

You need a place to sit and deal with bills and scrutinize your kids'report cards; you need a spot for the computer that's used foronline gift-buying, e-mail, or checking out that novel you'vealways wanted to read. Even if you don't have a lot of squarefootage, you can carve out an attractive, functional work area foryou and yours. Here's how.

Make room

Be realistic -- what have you got to work with? If there's not an entireroom to devote to it, rethink smaller areas like a corner of the kitchencounter, a nook in a bedroom or a part of the living room. Consider atall hutch with a pull-out or drop-down cupboard that can act as awriting surface when you need it and flip up when you don't. Evena small closet can be converted into a workspace by removing the doorand installing a piece of sturdy melamine or painted particle boardacross it (for the desktop) and shelves above.

It doesn't matter if you're planning a workspace for children or adults-- standard design principles still apply. The most important one: amplestorage. Plan the desktop over drawers that will accommodatehanging files, and make sure your work surface is between 24" and30" deep, because you'll need that space to comfortably fit a computerkeyboard and monitor. Ideally, the desktop will have grommet holesalong the back for electrical cords. You can plug two surge-protectorpower bars into your electrical outlets, and then mounting those powerbars: one to the underside of the back of the work surface, the otherclose by for all those electronic chargers we all seem to accumulate.This way, the chargers are always plugged in, and you can park yourcellphone in a designated, yet hidden, place each evening.

Take stock

Do an inventory of furniture you already have. If you're not loggingmultiple hours a day in the space, an unused dining chair will sufficefor your workspace; a small table with shelves or wall-mountedbookcases above makes a compact and efficient desk area; a boardover filing cabinets is an economical and practical desk.Whatever youdo, look up -- few of us maximize the vertical space in our homes andyou need all of it to make the most of your home office.

Get organized

Don't let drawers become a jumbled mess of inaccessible items.Consider a kitchen utensil tray to keep scissors, stapler, Post-its andother office essentials orderly and reachable. Some pretty glass

and ceramic jars, or unused coffee cups, work well for pens andpencils. For personal papers, mail, stationery and magazines, usemagazine holders in a colour that ties in with the surrounding decor.Hang corkboard or a quilted piece of fabric on the wall above yourdesk, or on the inside of storage cubbies and between shelves: you canpin notes and papers to it, reducing the clutter on your desktop.

Accessorize

Colour affects mood, so give your workstation palette careful thought.If you need to slow down and focus on tasks, consider a soothingmuted palette of pale shades; if you need to kick-start your creativitywith a jolt, deep, vibrant colours may be better for you. You can addcolour with paint and with desktop accessories. Besides the overallroom lighting, you'll need task lighting, especially near the computermonitor (if you have one) and over the area where you write. If a desklamp will eat up precious inches, consider a light with a clamp, whichyou can attach to an overhead shelf. Because the home office becomespart of your home decor, don't forget the small touches. Pictures andplants (a few short bamboo stalks in a small glass is low-maintenanceand low-budget) go a long way toward making the space look invitingand flow seamlessly through the house.
