YOU BAKING BEAUTY On Friday the 4th of September my Mum and I held an SPCA bake stall outside More than Books. We sold every piece of baking and made a total of $791 altogether. I would like to thank everybody that either donated money or brought something and also a special thanks to Mrs and Mr Parker for kindly letting me have my stall at More than Books and helping me when it got really busy!

One last huge thanks to the people who baked something for the stall!

TRUSTEES SOUGHT Are You Interested in Becoming a Trustee of Radio Charity? The Board of Radio Charity is calling for expressions of inter-est from individuals who would like to be considered for ap-pointment as a trustee. The Radio Charity Trust Board is in-corporated as a charitable trust board under the Charities Act. It delivers benefits by fulfilling the role of the communi-cation hub for the community of the Maniototo via Burn Ra-dio 729, Positively Maniototo and via social media.

Basically the board endeavours to meet approximately two-monthly on a weeknight and trustees pitch in to help with on-going tasks mostly associated with maintenance of facilities and equipment.

Candidates will need to demonstrate a keen interest in com-munity communications. Ideally we are seeking individuals with a 'Whole of Maniototo' perspective. Some small to me-dium business ownership/management experience would be desirable.

If you would like to be considered detail your capabilities in writing addressed to The Chairman, Radio Charity Trust, 10 Pery Street, Ranfurly no later than Friday 30th October 2015.

ANNOUNCERS INVITED Burn 729am/87.9fm needs more announcers on their team and invites anyone interested to give Denise a ring for a chat. Burn relies on volunteers to keep your community radio sta-tion live and local. In its 23rd year of operation, the Mani-ototo has worked hard over the years to bring a wide range of music and information to the area.

Full training and support is given and experience is not nec-essary. That is part of the unique quality of Burn - it is a com-munity radio station owned by and run by our community. Burn is one of the very few independent, community run sta-tions in the country.

Shifts and hours are flexible and we are happy to bring new people in to do even just one shift a week. It’s a great way to contribute to the community, keep in touch with local hap-penings and meet new people! Those new to the area find it a great way to learn the true ins and outs of how the Mani-ototo ‘ticks’.

Past announcers have gone on to work for larger radio sta-tions with a couple of success stories including Henry Young-man doing the breakfast show and working in promotions for Queenstown More FM and Quentin McIntosh becoming Op-erations Manager at The Edge in Rotorua. Time at Burn looks great on your CV!

So, if you’d like to take the opportunity to announce on our community radio station please get in touch by emailing us at [email protected] or by calling 444 9729.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? This month Positively Maniototo asks Maniototo Area School principal, Patsy Inder, to share some of her story with us ...

You were born here in the Maniototo, what did you do here before you left? I was a pupil at Maniototo Area School when it became the first Area School in the country at the beginning of 1969. I went on to do senior High School at Timaru, then went to University of Otago and Dunedin College of Education.

When did you leave the Maniototo and where did you go? I taught in Dunedin, Balfour and Catlins Area School before coming back to be principal at Naseby where my father's family had lived for four generations. Before working for Education Review Office I was principal at Tokoiti, Waitati and Caversham Schools.

Did you travel? Yes, I spent a year living and working in Japan - teaching Eng-lish to all age ranges from three year olds to senior citizens. It was a fascinating experience because of the cultural differ-ences and the fabulous hospitality of the people I met along the way. I also made lifelong friends among the expat com-munity.

When we sold the farm following my mother's death I moved to the Waikato working for and studying at a post graduate level the University of Waikato. I then moved to be principal of a school on Great Barrier Island which is a half hour plane ride (eight-seater) from Auckland. I loved Great Barrier but was really amused by their belief that it was really isolated because sometimes the weather was bad and planes would be delayed. It was nowhere nearly as isolated as much of Central Otago. I was always drawn back to the Maniototo where I spent summer holidays. .

Career highlights? Career highlights have always included working with kids. You cannot beat that moment when a student suddenly 'gets' something they have been struggling with. Working for the Ministry of Education was only a highlight because of the places I got to work, with people who were totally com-mitted to getting their school being the best it could be. I also was delighted to be involved in a number of research projects involving the Ministry of Education and University of Waikato personnel where we worked with teachers and families to improve outcomes for students not succeeding at school. Working as a teacher is a huge privilege and a great responsibility as you are always looking for ways to support children, to see their own potential and strive to achieve it. I love the quote that “education is not the filling of the bucket but the lighting of a fire.”

Life highlights? Life highlights are harder to characterize - being invited to MC the wedding of a student I had previously worked hard to stop from being expelled from a school; seeing the sun rise from the top of Mt Fuji, hearing the national anthem played when first representing New Zealand in curling, can-dlelight tour of Petra, hot air ballooning over the Valley of the Kings.

STEADY AS YOU GO Falls are not a natural part of ageing. Falls are preventable. Save yourself from a fall by attending SAYGo classes to im-prove your strength and balance. The classes are designed for men and women and have been shown to provide con-tinuous improvements in strength and balance over time.

Ranfurly classes are Thursdays 10-10.30am at the St John Ambulance Rooms. It’s only $2 per session.

Contact Joan Pringle 444 9629, Karen Munro 444 9814 or Maureen Miller on 444 9493.

I could go on about wonderful experiences but I always expect there to be another highlight any day! I did not do the traditional OE but have travelled extensively since: all over Japan when I lived there, Korea, Guam, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey (right), United States, Can-ada, Mexico and holidaying re-peatedly in the Pacific and Austra-lia.

What do you love about the Maniototo? I love the Maniototo for lots of reasons - the landscapes and the sky, the family connections and history, the memories of all the events that used to be here - Naseby & Patearoa gym-khanas, Boxing Day sports at Waipiata and all events involving the small schools. Connections to sports, particularly hockey and curling are a huge part of Maniototo's attraction as are the long established links with Maniototo people.

I came back because I realised that Maniototo truly is home, no matter where I lived when ever I was asked about home I visualised the Maniototo.

MANIOTOTO A&P SHOW The AGM for the Maniototo A&P Show held in September at the Ranfurly Bowling Club was well attended and marked a ‘changing of the guards’. Outgoing President Simon Paterson handed over the reins to Mark Paterson after his three year tenure with Craig Paterson elected as Junior Vice-Chair. Next in line were yet to be decided. Committee member Anne Cotton thanks Simon for involv-ing the entire community (young and old) with open arms. Longest serving secretary, Neville Wahrlich contin-ues in the role.

Ian Smith (right) was appointed as new Show Patron following in the footsteps of the late Ron McSkimming, Ron Paterson and Bruce Paterson. “Big boots to fill. If I do half the job they did that’d be great,” he says.

As there was so much to discuss in terms of rule changes , it was decided that those charged with the equestrian events will meet separately.

The main committee did decide that a medal for excellence be awarded and be combined with a trophy sponsorship being newly provided by ICL Accountants which was much appreciated.

A planning meeting for both the wider Maniototo A&P Show and Horticultural and Industrial Division will be held on Monday the 12th of October, 7.30pm at the Ranfurly Bowl-ing Club. This enables both committees to meet separately but then also get together as one afterwards.

PLANNING MEETING FOR MANIOTOTO A&P SHOW (HORTICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL INCLUDED)

SPRING CHALLENGE … ACCEPTED! The Spring Challenge started in 2007 with only 300 com-petitors and now, in 2015, there were 1200 wonderful women entered, 400 teams! Sponsored by Torpedo7, the event is held in a different part of the South Island each year. This year Wanaka played host and what a show it put on! There are three women per team with one support crew member. By hiking, mountain biking and rafting, teams navigate their way through a set route to ‘control points’ in numerical order using a map and compass.

Wonderful weather, world class scenery and a polished, exciting event contributed to local lasses Deborah Paterson, Cate Herlihy, Erin Elworthy, Geraldine Dowling, Lucia Dowling, Deirdre Perkins, Geraldine Duncan, Tash Kane and past local Jolene Barclay and their supporters all having a day out to remember. Challenges consisted of the 3 hour, 6 hour and 9 hour challenge, Team ‘DLGs’ – consisting of Geraldine, Lucia & Deirdre finished the 3 hour challenge in 4 hours 13 minutes and Team ‘First Timers’ – consisting of Cate, Deb and Erin finished in 4 hours 22 minutes. Team ‘Wii not fit’ consisting of Geraldine Duncan, Tash and Jolene finished the 6 hour challenge in 7 hours 40 minutes.

Teams had to run from Hawea beach in wetsuits to the river and raft down the Hawea River to Albert Town, from there navigating their way collecting control points while biking and hiking Deans Track and around Dublin Bay and around the riverside tracks along the Clutha River. The 6 and 9 hour challenge teams continued down to Luggate, Criffel Station and Lake McKay Station and Pisa Range coming

back to Wanaka following the river tracks with all teams fin-ishing at Eely Point.

Rafting down the Hawea river was lots of fun, for many hav-ing not rafted before. The mountain bike track around Deans Track was very challenging for some with it being a first time on a track like that, a bit of holding on and hoping for the best! The scenery throughout the course was absolutely stun-ning and the weather certainly played its part. With suppor-tive team mates and support crew it was a fantastic challenge with many planning for next year’s adventure in Golden Bay.

Cate Herlihy and Erin Elworthy coming back from the first bike section.

Maniototo Kindergarten recognises the distances which parents and fami-lies travel to attend quality early childhood education in the Mani-ototo. We are thankful for the dona-

tions and support over the years we have received from our wider community to establish and maintain this qual-ity Kindergarten. As a way of showing our appreciation to all who attend Maniototo Kindergarten we have alleviated this related financial burden, by now offering up to 30 hours per week of free early childhood education to all children aged 2 – 5 years of age.

Our Kindergarten was established by a dedicated team of locals who worked tirelessly to give our community this amazing facility. The vision for this team was to provide an environment that is purpose built to cater for our young children. They understood the quality that Kinder-garten brings and realised the importance of having a team of 100% qualified and registered teachers.

The teaching team are dedicated to ensuring your child feels at home in our centre. The children are excited about coming to Kindergarten each day and we often hear parents say that they struggle to keep them home on the days that they are not enrolled.

We are a community based early childhood provider, which means that any funds raised go towards providing quality resources that enhance our children’s learning and development.

We are proud to be involved in our local community through events such as the recent Maths education eve-ning for parents which was held at the Area School. We presented parents with practical ideas for encouraging their child to grasp early maths concepts. If you would like a copy of this, please drop into the Kindergarten and we are more than happy to share this with you all.

Lesley (right) established the Founda-tion in 2010 in memory of her daughter who was killed by her former boyfriend Clayton Weatherston, whom she was dating for just five months.

In recognition of her work and the awareness she is creating, Lesley was named in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours list.

The presentations are being brought to you by the Otago Sui-cide Prevention Trust. Lesley will speak in Wanaka on Wednesday 14th October at 7pm in the Armstrong Room of Lake Wanaka Centre and in Alexandra on Thursday 15th Octo-ber, 7pm at The Cellar Door.

Advertorial Itchy Pets: With the warmer spring and summer months upon us we often start to notice an increase in itchiness and skin irrita-tion with some of our pets. Such signs include scratching and licking, increased redness of the skin especially under the elbows and groin and in between the toes and pads, hair loss and changes to the coat.

There are many causes behind skin dermatitis and it can take a bit of investigating to work out which factors are in-volved in affecting you pet. Some of the common causes include airborne allergens like pollen and dust mites, contact allergens like grass, food allergies, bacterial, yeast or fungal skin infections, and other parasites like mites.

If you notice your pet is experiencing increased itchiness or other signs of skin irritation in the coming months, or at any other time of the year, we can help to establish an accurate diagnosis and management plan to keep your pet itch free and as comfortable as possible.

Cats in season: With spring here the feline breeding season is kicking into gear. Be aware if you have any un-neutered female cats at home they are likely to start seasoning and are therefore at risk of becoming pregnant. This can lead to a lot of un-wanted kittens over the summer months as cats can start cycling unpredictably from the early age of 5 months old. To prevent this happening it is best to get any cats in now for neutering, whether they be males or females! Both sexes require a straight forward same-day procedure and this is offered by VetEnt at a subsidised cost to aim to reduce un-wanted breeding of cats within our area. Give us a call on 444-9615 to book in your feline friend.

Horse Dentals: We have been doing a large number of horse dentals in the area lately with Alisa and Mark in our Alexandra clinic and Becks in the Ranfurly clinic all having undergone specialised training to be able to use an equine dental PowerFloat in combination with a full-mouth speculum (a metal device which gently holds the jaw open allowing us to have great visualization of all the teeth including those molars at the very back which are often left ignored if the right equipment isn’t used.)

We offer a very professional and thorough dental examina-tion with treatment of any abnormalities found. Horse’s teeth are continually growing and regular dental examina-tions are recommended to ensure the correct surfaces are being worn down evenly and nasty sharp points aren’t de-veloping.

October promotion: This month we are offering 20% off ALL vaccines for small animals – ring us for a booking and mention the October promotion to get your discount! Hope you all have a great month.

Jane Falconer presents her CLACHANBURN COMMENT To water or not to water, and how beneficial is watering before the sunshine and warmth come?

The debate goes on. While there is still considerable snow on the mountains we will get frosts and do you want to be big time watering, encouraging new growth only to run the risk of losing it.

I am hand watering new plants which must not die and, if in a very dry place, something is looking like needing a drink I give it one. Here, the farm irrigation water has not been turned on yet but will be in a few days so, I shall reconsider. What we really need is a good rain, followed by sunshine and warmth and we will be away. It is dry, July was dry and last summer was particularly dry. There is talk of another summer like last. The best advice is mulch, mulch and more mulch.

Every now and then I hear someone asking about a plant, and this time Daphnes, and do they grow well here? I have a few and love them. They like an acid soil. Most like part sun and some evergreen, or part EG, and some deciduous. Mine would not be more than a metre high. Their common factor which makes them such a desirable plant is their gor-geous perfume, and, might I say, good shape. The ones I have include Daphne mezereum, D burkwoodii, D odora and D odora alba.

At the moment here, the daphnes, winter roses and ericas all combine beautifully together, and with a few blossoms appearing overhead, it is a glorious sight of pinks and whites. The daffodils are beginning to flower well as are many little treasures which we gardeners do love, especially in Spring when they pop up and surprise us after our long winter.

I am looking forward to the Lucy roses arriving in the Mani-ototo, and hope you like them and have great success with them. Do water them well while they become established. Our family along with the Lions club do thank you for your support, and thanks to outlets for selling them. All profits go to Ranui House in Christchurch, where many out of town patients stay while having treatment away from home.

Happy gardening Jane

OCTOBER 1915 in MANIOTOTO Funding raising for October got off to a good start with Kye-burn Station donating £100 [equivalent to $14,000 now] to the Wounded Soldiers Fund.

A second hospital ship is to be fitted out, in England, with the government calling on the New Zealand public for mone-tary donations plus chattels, e.g. 2000 feather pillows, 51cm x 76 cm; 600 water bottles with covers; 1500 toothbrushes and tins of tooth powder; etc.

The Mt. Ida Hospital nurses also raised funds by holding a dance which raised £14:3s for the Red Cross.

By now there was general unrest throughout the country about fit men not enlisting. A letter published in the Mt. Ida Chronicle, written by Trooper David Inder, who was wounded and in a hospital, Egypt, severely judged those in the Maniototo who had not yet joined up. He named some but the paper censored the names. Next, a list of those ‘shirking their duty’ appeared in the window of Inder’s Naseby auction rooms (below).

By the end of the month, legislation was passed making it compulsory for all men aged between eighteen and sixty years to register, with forms available at post offices throughout the country. New Zealanders in England also supported the soldiers by visiting the wounded in hospitals, Robert Inder and his daughter were frequent visitors to those recovering at Walton-on-Thames, London. Trooper Frank Jopson had been reported as missing in action which was later corrected to having landed at Malta very ill. Arthur Strode was given a rousing farewell at Ranfurly prior to join-ing the 9th Reinforcements.

ST JOHN OPEN DAY Maniototo St John Ambulance personnel welcome you to an Open Day on Labour Weekend Saturday (24th October - 1pm-4pm).

Raffles available on station for a snazzy remote controlled vehicle (the kids will want to check this out) and food ham-per.

Pop in after the Burn 729am Maniototo Markets, have a tour of the station and see the new technology now in-stalled in all frontline ambulances.
