Founders of the Shire. Hobbits of Bree, later Hobbits of the Shire. 3A1601: Argeleb II tenth King of Arthedain gave permission to the Hobbits to live in the Shire. Blanco with his brother Marcho settled there. They were Fallohide Hobbits. CAVALLO > BLANCO.BlancoHobbits who founded the Shire. Marcho and Blanco were brothers. They were of the kind of Hobbits called Fallohides. Marcho and Blanco originally lived in Bree, where both Men and Hobbits dwelled. In 1601 of the Third Age, Marcho and Blanco obtained permission from King Argeleb II to settle the land west of the Brandywine River. The brothers led a large group of Hobbits across the Bridge of Stonebows and claimed all the land between the river and the Far Downs. This land was named the Shire, and it became the homeland of the Hobbits in Middle-earth. The name Marcho is derived from the Old English mearh meaning "horse, steed" while Blanco is from blanca meaning "white or grey horse." According to The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion, their names are based on the legendary brothers Hengest and Horsa - whose names also mean "horse" - who were involved in the migration of Germanic peoples to Britain.

First Thain of the Shire. Bucca was from the region on the west bank of the Brandywine River known as the Marish. After the fall of the North Kingdom, the Hobbits decided to elect a Thain to be their leader in the absence of the King. Bucca became the first Thain in 1979 of the Third Age. From Bucca were descended the Oldbucks and subsequently the Brandybucks. The office of Thain later passed to the Took family. In Old English, bucc means "male deer" and bucca means "male goat."

ELFSTAN FAIRBAIRN. B:4A0033. Second Warden of Westmarch. Eldest son and heir of Fastred of Greenholm and Elanor the Fair. His younger sister was Firiel. Grandson of Samwise. The first of the Fairbairns of the Towers. His name means "elfstone" in translated Hobbitish. He was named after Aragorn II (King Elessar).Elfstan Fairbairn

Grandson of Samwise Gamgee. Elfstan Fairbairn was the son of Sam's daughter Elanor the Fair and Fastred of Greenholm. Elfstan had at least one sibling, a younger sister named Firiel. Elfstan was born in the year 33 of the Fourth Age. The next year the family moved to Undertowers in the Tower Hills in the Westmarch. They became known as the Fairbairns of the Towers and Fastred was named the Warden of Westmarch. This title remained in the Fairbairn family, so it is likely that Elfstan Fairbairn became the second Warden of Westmarch after his father's death. Elfstan means "Elfstone," the Common Speech equivalent of "Elessar." It seems likely that Elfstan was named in honor of Aragorn, King Elessar.

ERLING. L:3A2854-?. Third child and second son of Holman the Greenhanded of Hobbiton and ?. He was not married. Like his father he was of the working class. He had two older siblings - Rowan and Halfred - and two younger siblings - Hending and Rose.

Falco Chubb-BagginsThe first of the Chubb-BagginsesA cousin of Bilbo Baggins, Falco was the son of Bilbo's uncle Bingo Baggins and Chica Chubb. He lived a long life, reaching the age of ninety-six, but not quite long enough to attend his cousin's Farewell Party, which was held two years after his death. He was survived by a daughter, Poppy, but when she married Filibert Bolger the short-lived Chubb-Baggins line came to an end.Cousin of Bilbo Baggins. Falco took the name Chubb-Baggins. This type of hyphenated name was customary when a Hobbit became the head of his mother's family. Therefore it seems likely that Falco was the head of the Chubb family. Falco Chubb-Baggins had a daughter named Poppy, born in 2944.

FARMER MAGGOT. Hobbit of the Shire.. His wife was Mrs Maggot. Her family-name is unknown. They had three daughters and two or more sons. Farmer Maggot and Tom Bombadil were friends and exchanged visits. Tom called him in jest Muddy-feet. Farmer Maggot was a good friend to all the Brandybucks. He was a terror to trespassers, and kept ferocious dogs: Grip, Fang, Wolf. Old Maggot caught Frodo Baggins several times trespassing after his famous mushrooms, when he was a youngster at Brandy Hall. Bill Butcher had also a dog named Grip. Farmer Maggot's farm was Bamfurlong. See also Mrs Maggot.-FARMER PUDDIFOOT. -GOODMAN MAGGOT. -MUDDY-FEET. -OLD MAGGOT, OLD FARMER MAGGOT. -PENNY-WISE TUB-ON-LEGS. -FARMER PUDDIFOOT. See also PUDDIFOOT.Maggot Farmer Maggot

Farmer famed for his mushrooms. Maggot's farm was Bamfurlong in the Marish between the Woody End and the Brandywine River. In addition to mushrooms, Maggot also grew turnips. His fields were well-tended and were divided by well-laid hedges. Maggot had a large brick house with a thatched roof. The house and farm buildings were surrounded by a wall with a wooden gate. Farmer Maggot was broad and thick-set with a round red face. He had a wife - known only as Mrs. Maggot - and they had three daughters and more than two sons. Maggot also employed several Hobbits on his farm. Maggot was very shrewd and knowledgeable about things both within the Shire and without. He ventured into the Old Forest at times and met with Tom Bombadil, who regarded Maggot as an important person. "There's earth under his old feet, and clay on his fingers; wisdom in his bones, and both his eyes are open," said Tom. The Fellowship of the Ring: "In the House of Tom Bombadil," p. 143

Page 9: home.kpn.nlhome.kpn.nl/thdefeber/HOB.docx  · Web viewThe name Sackville - containing the word sack - was intentionally related to Baggins - containing the word bag. ... KUD-DUKAN

Farmer Maggot was friendly with the Brandybucks and knew Peregrin Took, but living as he did near the border he was suspicious of strangers. He had once run young Frodo Baggins off his land for stealing mushrooms, and threatened to set his dogs on him if he ever returned. But when Frodo met Farmer Maggot again on September 25, 3018 of the Third Age, as he passed through the farmer's fields on the way to Crickhollow, Maggot welcomed Frodo into his home. Earlier that day, a Black Rider had come to Maggot's farm and offered the farmer gold in exchange for news of Baggins, but Farmer Maggot sent him on his way. Maggot guessed that Frodo's trouble had something to do with Bilbo's treasure but he did not press Frodo for details and promised to deal with the Black Riders if they returned. After supper, Frodo and his companions were driven to the Bucklebury Ferry in Farmer Maggot's cart. Maggot sent Frodo on his way with a gift of mushrooms courtesy of Mrs. Maggot. Maggot was intended to be a "meaningless" Hobbit name and was not intentionally related to the word meaning "grub, larva." BAMFURLONG. The name Bamfurlong did not have a clear meaning in the Shire, but it probably meant "bean field." The element bam is likely derived from "bean." A furlong is a division of a common field. Farmer Maggot's farm. Bamfurlong was located in the Marish on the west side of the Brandywine River. Bamfurlong was a well-tended farm with fields and meadows divided by hedges and drainage dikes. Farmer Maggot was famous for growing mushrooms at Bamfurlong. He also had a large field of turnips. By the turnip field was a gate from which a lane ran to a clump of trees where the farm buildings stood. The lane then continued on for about a mile or two to the Causeway. The farm buildings were surrounded by a high wall with a wooden gate. The large house and farm buildings were made of brick and had thatched roofs. Farmer Maggot and Mrs. Maggot lived there with their children, including two sons and three daughters. Farmer Maggot also employed other Hobbits who worked on his farm. As a child, Frodo Baggins had gone to Bamfurlong to steal mushrooms and had been caught by Farmer Maggot, who threatened to set his dogs on the young Hobbit if he returned. Frodo inadvertently returned to Bamfurlong on September 25, 3018 of the Third Age, with Sam Gamgee and Pippin Took. The Hobbits had become disoriented while trying to avoid a Black Rider in the Woody End and emerged from the wood farther south than they had intended. Pippin recognized the land as Bamfurlong. They approached the farm house, and when Farmer Maggot realized who they were he invited them in for supper and told them that a Black Rider had come to the farm seeking news of someone named Baggins. After supper, he drove the Hobbits to the Bucklebury Ferry in his cart. Bamfurlong The farm of Farmer Maggot, located in the Marish near Bucklebury Ferry. Its major crop was mushrooms. The farm was stoutly built of brick and had a high wall round it. It is an English place-name. Probably from "bean" and "furlong" in the sense of a division of a common field. The name is now without clear meaning.See also DOGS > FANG, GRIP, WOLF.-BAMFURLONG. Farm. -BAMFURLONG = WHITFURROWS. Town. See SHIREMUSHROOMS.A favorite food of Hobbits. In the Shire, Farmer Maggot was noted for the fine mushrooms he grew at Bamfurlong, his farm in the Marish on the west bank of the Brandywine River. As a child, a yearning for mushrooms led Frodo Baggins to Farmer Maggot's fields to steal from his crop. Maggot caught young Frodo and threatened to set his dogs on him if he ever trespassed on his land again. When Frodo and his companions found themselves in Farmer Maggot's fields as they made their way to Crickhollow on September 25, 3018 of the Third Age, Maggot remembered Frodo but did not make good on his threat. Instead, the Hobbits were treated to a meal including a dish of mushrooms and bacon, and Mrs. Maggot prepared a basket of mushrooms for Maggot to give to Frodo when they parted. A tasty kind of edible fungus, and a particular favourite of the Hobbits. In the Shire, it seems those that grew in the boggy region of the Marish were the most prized. Farmer Maggot grew them in his fields, and in The Lord of the Rings Frodo remembers stealing mushrooms from Maggot's fields as a child. He revisited the same farm years later, and Old Maggot gave him a parting gift - a basket of mushrooms.

HOB HAYWARD. Hob Hayward L:WR. He lived in the Eastfarthing. Before the WR he guarded the Hay Gate. At the time of Saruman's control of the Shire he was a guard at the Brandywine Gate. He was fairly old then. Hob was supposed actually to be a hayward. A keeper of a pound or fenced enclosure. Guard of Buckland. Hob Hayward was an old Hobbit at the time of the War of the Ring. He was originally a guard at the Hay Gate, where the High Hay met the Great East Road. But after the Chief's Men took over the Shire, he became a guard at the new spiked gates erected on the Brandywine Bridge. Hob Hayward was on duty the night of October 30, 3019 of the Third Age, when Frodo Baggins and his companions returned to the Shire. Hob recognized Merry Brandybuck and expressed surprise that he was still alive. Hob and his fellow guards were reluctant to open the gate because it was against orders to admit anyone after nightfall. Merry and Pippin climbed the gate and ousted Bill Ferny, the Chief's Big Man. Hob started to tell the four Hobbit adventurers what had been happening in the Shire during their absence, and when the other guards tried to stop him he accused some of them of being informants for the Chief's Men. The name Hayward reflects Hob's duties as a guard at the High Hay. The word hay means "fence, hedge" and the word ward means "warden, guard."

Holman lived at Number 3, Bagshot Row, Hobbiton. He was gardener to Bilbo. He taught the craft of gardening to Hamfast Gamgee the Gaffer. Holman Greenhand was the grandson of Holman the Greenhanded. Holman Greenhand

Gardener of Bilbo Baggins. He was the son of Halfred Greenhand and the grandson of Holman the Greenhanded. Holman Greenhand worked in the garden at Bag End in Hobbiton. Holman liked and admired Bilbo Baggins but found his employer's tendency to wander off on his own and talk to strangers and travellers rather peculiar. On April 5, 2941, Bilbo went out walking and told Holman that he hoped to meet some Elves since the next day was the Elves' New Year. Shortly thereafter, Gandalf came to Bag End looking for Bilbo and Holman told the Wizard what Bilbo had said before he left. Gandalf was pleased by this indication of Bilbo's adventurous spirit and he made up his mind to include Bilbo as a member of the quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountainfrom Smaug the Dragon. When over a year had passed since Bilbo left on the quest, he was declared dead. An auction was held to sell his possessions on June 22, 2942, and Holman assigned his apprentice Hamfast Gamgee to keep people from trampling the garden. Bilbo returned in the middle of the auction and took up residence in Bag End once more. Holman continued to work for Bilbo until around 2961, when Hamfast took over as gardener at Bag End. Holman's date of death is not known.

Lalia Clayhanger Fat The FatShe married Fortinbras Took in 2914 when she was 31. Their son Ferumbras was born in 2916. Upon the death of her husband in 2980, Lalia became the nominal head of the Took family. According to Hobbit custom, her son would not succeed her until her death. She ruled for 22 years. Lalia was a powerful and memorable though not well-loved matriarch. It was said that Ferumbras remained unmarried because no Hobbit-maid wanted Lalia as a mother-in-law. Lalia was so fat that she could not walk and had to be pushed in a wheelchair. She was thus unable to attend Bilbo Baggins' Farewell Party in 3001. One day in the spring of 3002, Lalia was pushed by her attendant to take air at the Great Door of the Great Smials. The chair ran over the threshold and tipped and Lalia fell down the steps into the garden and died. It was rumored that the attendant was Pearl Took, sister of Pippin Took. After Ferumbras became Thain, Pearl received a pearl necklace that was a Took family heirloom. Also known as Lalia the Great and Lalia the Fat.

LOTHO SACKVILLE-BAGGINS. Called the Chief and Chief Shirriff. Also called Little Pimple and Pimple. Also The Boss.

Lotho Sackville-Baggins L:3A2964-3019=55y. mmd 3018/3019. Son and only child of Otho Sackville and Lobelia Bracegirdle. He was not married. September 3A3018: Lotho and his mother Lobelia moved into Bag End. They bought it from Frodo Baggins. Lotho used money obtained from Isengard and elsewhere from the sale of pipe-weed grown on his lands in the Southfarthing. He began buying up property and supporting outside Men, known as Ruffians or the Chief's Men. Lotho imprisoned the Mayor, Will Whitfoot, and named himself Chief Shirriff. He took over the Shire, industrialising and regimenting its life. During Lotho's control of the Shire the Bridge Inn was torn down.September 3A3019: The arrival of Saruman. Now the power of Lotho collapsed. In September or October Saruman was slain probably by Gríma, who may have eaten him. At his own insistence Lotho was called the Chief, which was short for Chief Shirriff. The Hobbits of the Shire called him Pimple or Little Pimple. He seems to have had a number of facial blemishes. A title apparently invented for himself by Lotho Sackville-Baggins after he deposed Will Whitfoot as Mayor of the Shire and took power for himself. After Saruman came to the Shire and took it over as 'Sharkey', the Hobbits considered him to be the 'real' Chief. The Encyclopedia of Arda-PIMPLE.Pimple

A name for Lotho Sackville-Baggins. Lotho was the only son of Otho and Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. An unpopular hobbit, he was widely known by the mocking name 'Pimple'. When his father died in III 3012, he inherited plantations of Pipe-weed in the Southfarthing, and began to trade with the lands south of the Shire. It was later discovered that he had come into contact with Isengard, and was supplying Leaf to none other than the Wizard Saruman.Pimple's trade and wealth grew, and he began to buy up land and property across the Shire, from inns and mills to farms and more plantations. Eventually, he sent so much of the Shire's produce away into the south that its people began to suffer hardship. Then, Lotho's Ruffians came out of the southern lands to quell the Shire-hobbits' complaints, and Pimple took the title of Chief Shirriff.Eventually Saruman himself arrived in the Shire, though the hobbits had no idea of his history or nature, knowing him only by the name his servants used, 'Sharkey'. At about this time Lotho Pimple fell out of view, and it was thought that he was being held prisoner by Sharkey at his headquarters, Bag End. The truth was far worse: Saruman's servant Wormtongue had stabbed the self-appointed Chief Shirriff in his sleep. So the hobbit who had tried to take control of the Shire came to a grisly and untimely end.The Encyclopedia of Arda-CHIEF'S MEN (RUFFIANS, SHARKEY'S MEN). -COSIMO SACKVILLE-BAGGINS. Hobbit who declared himself Chief of the Shire during the War of the Ring. Lotho was born in 2964 of the Third Age. He had sandy hair. Lotho's father Otho Sackville-Baggins was the cousin of Bilbo Baggins and was the next in line to become head of the Baggins family. Otho and Lobelia Sackville-Baggins dreamed of the day when they would move into Bag End, but their hopes were dashed in 2989 when Bilbo made Frodo Baggins his heir. Lotho and his family attended Bilbo's Farewell Party in 3001. When Otho died in 3012, Lotho inherited his father's pipe-weed plantations in the Southfarthing. Not content with the revenue he earned within the Shire, Lotho also exported pipe-weed. His biggest customer was Saruman, the traitorous Wizard, who had learned of pipe-weed from Gandalf. Saruman was suspicious of Gandalf's interest in the Shire and he sent agents there to purchase leaf and other goods and to gather information. Lotho and others were corrupted by Saruman and gave details about their land and their fellow Hobbits in exchange for payment. With his new wealth Lotho began to purchase more plantations and farmland as well as inns, malt-houses, and mills including the Old Mill in Hobbiton. In September of 3018, Lotho moved into Bag End with his mother when Frodo sold it to her before he mysteriously disappeared from the Shire. Lotho then tore down the Old Mill and replaced it with an brick building full of wheels and strange contraptions to increase production. During the fall of 3018, Lotho sent large quantities of pipe-weed and other goods out of the Shire, causing a shortage of provisions among the Hobbits as winter approached. Rough-looking Men came to the Shire and took the merchandise away in carts. Some of the Men stayed in the Shire and cut down trees to build themselves ugly new houses. At first the Men paid for damages and goods, but soon they began taking what they wanted. Mayor Will Whitfoot was on his way to Bag End to protest when he was arrested and imprisoned in the Lockholes. Shortly after the New Year of 3019, Lotho proclaimed himself Chief Shirriff. An ever-growing list of Rules were imposed on the Hobbits of the Shire, and those who disobeyed were sent to the Lockholes. Shirriff-houses were built in many villages and the number of Shirriffs was increased to enforce the Rules. Food and other goods were gathered for central distribution, but the Hobbits got short shrift. Beer and pipe-weed were reserved for the Chief's Men and inns were closed. Lotho was nominally in charge of the Shire, but things soon got out of control and the Men did as they pleased. Then on September 22, 3019, the Men's real master Saruman arrived. Saruman moved into Bag End and took over as Chief and things went from bad to worse in the Shire. The Chief's Men began wantonly destroying and burning homes, trees, and farmland. The New Mill was used for some industrial purpose and the Water became polluted with waste. Lotho's mother Lobelia was arrested after she threatened some of the Chief's Men with her umbrella when they came to put up sheds at Bag End. Frodo Baggins and his companions returned to the Shire and rallied the Hobbits to defeat the Chief's Men at the Battle of Bywater on November 3, 3019. Frodo had hoped to save Lotho, for he realized that Lotho had been tricked by Saruman's agents and had lost control of the situation. But it was too late: Lotho had been stabbed to death in his sleep by Saruman's lackey Grima Wormtongue. Saruman insinuated that Grima ate Lotho's body, but it is not known whether this was true.

It was Nob who found Merry Brandybuck unconscious near Bill Ferny's house and shouted out before two dark figures could carry Merry away. Nob also made up the Hobbits' beds with bolsters to resemble sleeping figures, complete with a brown mat to represent Frodo's head. Nob took part in keeping watch on the inn's doors, but the inn was attacked nevertheless. Nob and his co-worker Bob gave Sam a bag of apples as a parting gift. When the four Hobbits returned to Bree in October 3019 of the Third Age, they found Nob still working at the Prancing Pony.

NUNCLE TIM. Tom's uncle ("nuncle") in Samwise Gamgee's poem The Stone Troll. A corps whose shinbone was being gnawed on by the Troll. Nuncle Tim was most probably imaginary and fictitious. Also called TIM.TimTom’s disinterred uncle. In Sam's troll-rhyme, Tim was the uncle of Tom, and was long dead at the beginning of the story. One day, Tim's nephew Tom discovered a troll gnawing on a shin-bone, which he was somehow able to recognise as belonging to his dead uncle Tim. Tom set out to avenge his uncle by aiming a kick at the rock-hard troll, but his foolhardiness earned him no more than a lame leg.It is likely that neither Tim nor Tom actually existed, but were simply the products of Sam's imagination. On the other hand, it is perfectly possible that Sam's poem was based on actual events, or perhaps on Hobbit folk-legend out of the past.

Old Noakes was a bit suspicious of Frodo because his mother was a Brandybuck. He commented, "It beats me why any Baggins of Hobbiton should go looking for a wife away there in Buckland, where folks are so queer." (FotR, p. 30) He also reported a rumor he had heard that Frodo's parents drowned because Drogo Baggins' weight sank their boat. He was the son of Bilbo's uncle Longo Baggins. Otho's mother was Camellia Sackville. Through his mother, Otho became head of the Sackville family and as was customary in such cases he took her name in addition to his father's and was thus called Otho Sackville-Baggins. Otho owned land in the Southfarthing where pipe-weed was grown. He married Lobelia Bracegirdle and they had one son, Lotho, born in 2964. Otho was the next in line to become head of the Baggins family after his cousin Bilbo, who had no children. It was Otho's ambition to be the head of two families, and if he had succeeded he may have styled himself Otho Baggins-Sackville-Baggins. In 2941, Bilbo Baggins mysteriously disappeared from the Shire for over a year and was presumed dead. Otho and his wife Lobelia were at Bag End preparing to move in when Bilbo suddenly returned. Otho was sorely disappointed to have his ambition thwarted, and he remained resentful of Bilbo for the rest of his days. Otho's hope to become head of the Baggins family was finally dashed when Bilbo adopted Frodo Baggins as his heir around 2989. Despite their hard feelings, Otho and Lobelia attended Bilbo's 111th Birthday Party on September 22, 3001, because of the magnificent invitation and the promise of plentiful food. They were outraged when Bilbo suddenly vanished (with the help of his magic Ring) and they left the party in a huff. The next day the Sackville-Bagginses came to Bag End and Otho demanded that Frodo show him Bilbo's will. But Otho discovered that the will was clear and correct and signed in red ink by seven witnesses, so he left Bag End and never realized his ambition to live there.

Otho Sackville-Baggins died in 3012 at the age of 102. Six years after his death, his wife Lobelia bought Bag End when Frodo left the Shire and she moved in with her son Lotho. But their residence was short-lived, because Saruman - with whom Lotho had business dealings - came to the Shire in September of 3019 and took over Bag End. Lobelia was imprisoned and Lotho was killed. When Lobelia was released from the Lockholes, she returned Bag End to Frodo Baggins. The name Sackville - containing the word sack - was intentionally related to Baggins - containing the word bag. Otho Baggins took the hyphenated name Sackville-Baggins because he became the head of the Sackville family through his mother.

Robin Smallburrow was from Hobbiton. He became a Shirriff around 3012 of the Third Age. He enjoyed roaming the countryside and talking to people and hearing news. He was also fond of visiting the various inns of the Shire and sampling their beer. When the Shire was occupied by ruffians during the War of the Ring, Robin Smallburrow was assigned to the First Eastfarthing Troop and he was quartered in the Shirriff-house at Frogmorton. He was not allowed to resign from his post and had to enforce a number of harsh and unfair rules that were imposed on Hobbits by the Chief's Men. On November 1, 3019, Frodo Baggins and his companions returned to the Shire and were arrested by the First Eastfarthing Troop at Frogmorton. Sam Gamgee recognized Robin Smallburrow and asked him to explain what was going on. Robin told Sam about the expansion of the Shirriff force under the Chief's Men and the arrest of Mayor Will Whitfoot and others. He also told Sam that a message had arrived by Quick Post saying that Frodo and his friends were to be brought before the Chief. The next day the Shirriffs began to escort their prisoners to Bywater but the four Hobbit adventurers soon outpaced them. When the Shirriffs finally caught up to them at the Green Dragon they found that their prisoners had rallied the Hobbits to defy the Chief and his Men. Most of the Shirriffs joined the rebellion, and although it is not stated, it seems likely that Robin Smallburrow was one of them. The Hobbits defeated the Men at the Battle of Bywater on November 3.

One evening in early April 3018 of the Third Age, Ted Sandyman was at the Green Dragon with Sam Gamgee, the gardener at Bag End. Sam talked about strange things that had been happening in the Shire, including a Tree-man that his cousin Hal claimed to have seen walking on the North Moors. Ted Sandyman scoffed at Sam's tales, calling them children's stories. Neither was Ted interested in the news that the Elves were leaving Middle-earth. He questioned the reliability of Sam's sources of information - Bilbo and Frodo Baggins - saying: "Oh, they're both cracked. Leastways old Bilbo was cracked, and Frodo's cracking." (FotR, p. 54) After Frodo and Sam left the Shire in September of 3018, Lotho Sackville-Baggins bought the Old Mill and tore it down. He replaced it with an ugly brick building that straddled the river and was full of wheels and strange contraptions to increase production. The next year in September of 3019, Saruman took over operation of the Mill and it was used for some industrial purpose that created noise and pollution. Ted Sandyman was pleased by these developments and he continued to work in the New Mill. He took orders from the Chief's Men and he participated in the wanton destruction of the Shire by cutting down the trees beyond the Mill that shaded the road to Bywater. After the Battle of Bywater on November 3, 3019, Frodo and Sam returned to Hobbiton with Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took. They encountered Ted Sandyman at the New Mill. Ted laughed at their dismay at the destruction that had been done to Hobbiton, and he said that if they touched him he would report them to the Chief. When Merry told him that the Chief's Men had been defeated and that the Chief was about to be removed, Ted was shocked. He sounded a horn to raise the alarm, but Merry responded by sounding the Horn of the Mark, and Hobbits from all over Hobbiton responded. The New Mill was subsequently torn down. It is not known what became of Ted Sandyman.

TOBOLD HORNBLOWER. Called Toby and Old Toby. L:3A2670/. His residence was Longbottom. He was the first to grow pipe-weed in the Shire. Old Toby was also a variety of pipe-weed, named after Tobold. -TOBIAS HORNBLOWER.Tobold Hornblower Old Toby The first cultivator of pipe-weed. Tobold Hornblower lived in Longbottom in the Southfarthing during the time of Thain Isengrim II. Tobold was knowledgeable about herbs. Around 2670 of the Third Age, he began cultivating pipe-weed in his gardens. Tobold never revealed how he came by the pipe-weed plant. In his book Herblore of the Shire, Merry Brandybuck speculated that Tobold may have acquired specimens of the plant in Bree, where he often traveled in his youth. Tobold was nicknamed Old Toby, and one of the finest varieties of pipe-weed bore the same name. PIPE-WEED/PIPEWEED. The art of smoking pipe-weed was invented by Hobbits. Pipe-weed was put in the bowl of a clay or wooden pipe with long stem through which one inhaled the smoke of the burning leaves. This custom spread among Dwarves, Men, and even Wizards, and it is still practiced today. Most of what is known about pipe-weed comes from Herblore of the Shire by Meriadoc Brandybuck. Pipe-weed is a plant of the genus Nicotiana. The plant was probably not native to Middle-earth and may have been brought from over the Sea by the Men of Westernesse. It grew abundantly in Gondor, though it was known mainly for its fragrant smell and the idea of smoking it apparently did not occur to Men. The plant was probably carried north up the Greenway, by accident or design, and came to grow around the village of Bree. The Hobbits of Bree may have been the first to smoke the plant in pipes, and the Prancing Pony in Bree became a center of the art of pipe smoking. The first true pipe-weed was grown by Tobold Hornblower, who most likely obtained his first specimens from Bree around 2670 of the Third Age. He bred and cultivated the plant, which flourished in the warm, sheltered climate around Longbottom in the Southfarthing of the Shire. One of the most popular varieties of pipe-weed, Old Toby, was named after him. Longbottom Leaf and Southern Star were two other popular types of leaf of the Shire, while Southlinch was a variety grown in Bree.

During their long journey, the members of the Fellowship frequently took comfort in smoking pipes. Strider the Ranger was smoking a pipe when Frodo first saw him. Gandalf smoked to help himself think when he was uncertain of the way to take in Moria. Sam remembered to pack pipe-weed when the Fellowship left Rivendell (though he forgot rope); later, near Mordor, he dreamed he was searching for his pipe and realized he had no weed left. Merry and Pippin were able to replenish their supply from a cache of Longbottom Leaf they found in the storerooms of Isengard. They shared their discovery with the Three Hunters, who had at last caught up to them. At their first meeting, Merry promised to tell King Theoden about the history of smoking, but he never got the chance. After the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, where the King was slain, Merry thought he might never smoke again, but Aragorn told him to have a pipe in memory of his liege. The mystery of the pipe-weed found at Isengard was solved when the Hobbits returned home: Saruman had been dealing with Lotho Sackville-Baggins. Lotho had begun by selling pipe-weed from his lands in the Southfarthing but had expanded his business interests. Soon there was no leaf to be had by Hobbits in the Shire. Rough-looking Men started to take over and then Saruman himself arrived. But after the Scouring of the Shire, in the year 1420 S.R., there was a bountiful pipe-weed harvest and things returned to normal. The art of smoking pipe-weed was invented by Hobbits. Pipe-weed was the tobacco of Middle-earth. Brought from Westernesse. It grew abundantly in Gondor, but only with great care in the North, in places like Longbottom and the Bree-land. In Gondor weed was esteemed for the fragrance of its flowers. Hobbits were the first to put it into a pipe and smoked it. The first time this happened probably in Bree. Travellers like Dwarves and Rangers picked up the habit at the Prancing Pony. About 3A2670 Tobold Hornblower grew pipe-weed for the first time in the Shire. Of the members of the Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf, Aragorn, Peregrin, Meriadoc, and Gimli the Dwarf were avid smokers. Legolas, perhaps in common with all Eldar, disapproved of the habit. At the time of the War the Bracegirdles and the Sackville-Bagginses owned many plantations.Pipe-weed -GALENAS. Sindarin name in Gondor. -FUILAS.-HALFLING'S LEAF. Longbottom in the Southfarthing was the first place in the Shire where pipe-weed was grown, and so Longbottom Leaf must have been one of the oldest and most established types (if not the original variety). The first Leaf-grower was Tobold Hornblower, and his family continued the tradition. When Merry and Pippin found barrels of Longbottom Leaf in the ruins of Isengard, they bore the brand-marks of the Hornblower family. -NICOTIANA. The Quenya name for tobacco. Jean Nicot (1530-1600). May 1559. Jean Liebault: Nicotiana.-OLD TOBY. Grown in the Southfarthing. Old TobyOne of the best varieties of pipe-weed. Meaning: 'Old Toby' was the nickname of Tobold Hornblower, who first introduced pipe-weed to the Shire One of the most notable varieties of the plant known as pipe-weed or Halflings' Leaf, grown in the region around Longbottom in the Shire's Southfarthing. It took its name from the famous old Hobbit who introduced pipe-weed to the Shire, the original 'Old Toby', Tobold Hornblower. The first pipe-weed of any kind was grown in the Shire in about the year 1070 by the Shire-reckoning (that is, the year 2670 of the Third Age), so Old Toby must have appeared after this date. Its apparent connections with Longbottom (where the first Leaf was grown) and the Hornblower family (who first grew it) hint that it was developed fairly soon after this date.

TOM. The protagonist of Sam Gamgee's poem The Stone Troll. Maybe to some extend modelled on Tom Bombadil. Samwise composed the poem after meeting Bombadil.TomA character in Sam's Troll-rhyme. Adventuring in the hills west of Rivendell, Strider and the Hobbits came across the petrified remains of the Stone-trolls encountered by Bilbo and the Dwarves many years before. There, Sam recited a rather gruesome rhyme that he had created himself, in which a character named Tom encounters a lone Troll gnawing the shin-bone of his uncle Tim. Understandably enraged by this, he aimed a kick at the Troll, but the monster's hide was as strong as stone, and so Tom earned himself a lame leg. There's no suggestion that Tom actually existed outside Sam's imagination (though it's not entirely impossible that he based his rhyme on real events). To confuse matters, one of the three Stone-trolls that inspired Sam's recitation was himself named Tom, but this is simple coincidence: the Tom in the rhyme is very clearly not a Troll.

Frodo acted as Deputy Mayor until Mid-year's Day in 3020 and Will Whitfoot returned to the office of Mayor for another seven years. Will Whitfoot resigned as Mayor in the year 6 of the Fourth Age and Sam Gamgee was elected to replace him. The element whit is derived from white. Old WillA nickname of the Will Whitfoot, the Mayor of the Shire at the time of the War of the Ring. He was already known as 'Old Will' at that time, though we're never told exactly how old he was. After Sharkey took over the Shire, Old Will found himself the first prisoner placed in the Lockholes, and he was held there until Sharkey was overthrown and he was freed. Once known as the fattest Hobbit in the Westfarthing, he emerged much less fat than when he had been imprisoned. Frodo Baggins took on the role of Deputy Mayor until the old Mayor was ready to resume his office, which he did on Mid-year's Day of 3A3020 (1420 by the Shire-reckoning). He then served another seven-year term before finally retiring (by which time he must have been 'Old Will' indeed).

WILLIE BANKS. Hobbit of Bree. He was killed in the fight between Bree-landers and Bill Ferny and his men in January 3A3019.

Willie BanksWillie Banks may have lived on the upper slopes of Bree-hill. He was killed in early 3019 of the Third Age when fighting broke out in Bree instigated by Men who had come up the Greenway from the South. Another Hobbit of the Underhill family was also killed, as were three Men of Bree: Mat Heathertoes, Rowlie Appledore, and Tom Pickthorn. The troublemakers were expelled from Bree along with Bill Ferny and Harry Goatleaf who had sided with them. The Hobbit name Banks refers to the banks or slopes where Hobbits built their holes.

HOBBITS Pippin said to Treebeard: 'Put us among the four, next to Man (the Big People)'. 'Nobody else calls us hobbits; we call ourselves that'. Hob: "..., since they have become rare and shy of the Big People, as they call us. They are (or were) a little people, about half our height, and smaller than the bearded Dwarves. Hobbits have no beards. There is little or no magic about them. They are inclined to be fat in the stomach; they dress in bright colours (chiefly green and yellow); wear no shoes, because their feet grow natural leathery soles and thick warm brown hair like the stuff on their heads (which is curly); have long clever brown fingers, good-natured faces, and laugh deep fruity laughs....".Hobbits have the unusual characteristic of having tough soles on their feet, as well as hair that covers all the way to their toes, so their feet stay warm. Hobbits do not tend to wear boots or shoes in any form, though where the land is low and muddy, they will wear boots to keep their feet dry (especially the Stoors).Hobbits also tended to live in burrows, often with many generations of one family in a very large one (eg. Brandy Hall or the Great Smials of Tuckbourogh). As suitable areas of these burrows often did not exist, Hobbits started to build houses, though they were still long and low. Even where they could burrow, hobbits tended to build workshops and sheds and the like. It is unknown where Hobbits came from, though after 1050 of the Third Age of the Sun, they started to wander Westwards over the Misty Mountains. This was after the Shadow fell on Greenwood the Great near where they lived (eg. Smeagol/Gollum and Deagol). Hobbits were split into three "kinds": Fallohides, which were taller, thinner, and often more adventurous than either of the other two. Fallohides were often found as chieftains of the other groups, and they were more skilled in languages and song as well as being more friendly with Elves.Harfoots: These were the most numerous kind, and more friendly with Dwarves.Stoors: These remained longest in the area of the River Anduin. Unlike many hobbits, the Stoors were more at ease in boats and could swim. Stoorish hobbits were the only hobbits who could grow a beard, in fact the only ones with any trace of facial hair.Hobbits averaged between two and four feet high though they now rarely reach 3 feet in height.

The Westron word for those of Hobbit-kindA word from the Westron language, used by the people of the Shire and Bree to refer to those of Halfling kind (it was, therefore, the word that Hobbits would have used to refer to themselves). It seems to have a derived from an older compound, kûd-dûkan, which was still in use in Rohan and meant 'hole-dweller'.In his 'translation' of the histories of Middle-earth, Tolkien used Old English to represent the language of the Rohirrim, and thus their kûd-dûkan became the Old English equivalent holbytla, giving rise to the more current and popular form used farther to the north: Hobbit. (It should be noted that this etymology was invented after the fact: the word 'Hobbit' came to Tolkien's imagination first, and then he devised this elaborate origin to explain it.)
