MISSIONSince 1986, our Mission has

been to provide homeless and low-income families

and individuals, including Veterans, with housing,

food, clothing, and support services necessary to obtain

self-sufficiency and improved quality of life.

VISIONWhile serving our local

community, HEP will be recognized as a national

model of excellence providing comprehensive

solutions to homelessness for individuals, families

and Veterans in our community.

ICARE VALUESWE BREAK

THE CYCLE OF HOMELESSNESS.

W hat an incredible history we have here at HEP. What started

as a simple act of kindness from our founders, Barb and Otis C.

“Preacher” Green, to help a family in need has grown into something truly

remarkable. Today, we are proud to be one of the largest and most

successful social services agencies in the Tampa Bay area. Our 8-acre

campus gives us the ability to not only house and feed those in need, but

to give them the wellness and workforce development tools they need to

empower them to end their struggle with homelessness for good.

Throughout our 31 year history, we have undergone changes, and 2017 was

no different. Early in the year we lost our Chairman Emeritus Bruce Fyfe to

illness. Words cannot describe the impact Bruce left on HEP and our

community as a whole. We were so honored to dedicate our Veterans

Community in his name this past year. We also were excited to announce

the promotion of Ashley Lowery to President & CEO this past summer.

Ashley was incredible in her role as HEP’s Director of Communications and

Development, and her passion and vision for our future makes her the ideal

leader of our organization going forward.

One thing that has not changed over HEP’s great history is our overall goal.

That is, quite simply, to be the last supportive housing program any

individual, family, or Veteran ever has to access. We continue to diligently

track our success, and are thrilled to share with you the stats on another

incredible year. In 2017, HEP was proud to serve 1,204 individuals,

including 504 Veterans and 127 children. An incredible 98% of families

exiting our permanent supportive housing secured independent housing in

the community. Additionally, HEP’s comprehensive Wellness program and

partnership with the Morton Plant Outreach Team saved the community

more than $4 million.

Of course, none of this is possible without us all working together: our

incredible staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, community partners,

and every single donor, whether large or small. On behalf of HEP, I

thank you for another fantastic year. And if you think our past

accomplishments are impressive, I can’t wait for you to see what

we have in store for the future.

Often times, individuals, Veterans and families come to HEP with solely the clothing on their backs. With the help of dedicated staff, volunteers and community partnerships, HEP is able to provide a wide range of support services, from fulfilling the most basic needs like clothing from the HEP Thrift Store to assisting people on their path to self-sufficiency by helping them navigate the complicated government assistance system.

SUPPORT SERVICES

TIM’S SECOND CHANCE

“Several years ago, I had a stable home life with my wife Hillary and a great career as a manufacturing company executive. Unfortunately, I invested my life’s savings in a failing business and soon lost everything. I began drinking heavily and fell into a deep depression. When our home was foreclosed on, Hillary and I felt utterly hopeless, and decided to end our lives together. Thankfully, we were rescued by police after a suicide attempt and entered HEP, where we lived for two months in 2016.

Coming to HEP was the best possible outcome for us, because it provided us with guidance, direction and amazing resources. I received counseling for my alcohol addiction, along with medication assistance and mental health counseling through the VA, to help me manage my depression. I also had several dental procedures completed at the HEP Dental & Wellness Clinic and attended job training courses through Pathways to Employment. It was an incredible feeling to finally have a place where I felt safe, and having that stability allowed me to work on re-building my life and repairing my self-esteem.

My wife and I now happily live in a senior’s community in Largo and I work as a Behavioral Health Technician at an outpatient center, helping struggling Veterans (just like I once was) get back on their feet. If I hadn’t come to HEP and received the support system it offered me, I would not be here telling my story today.”

The HEP West Veterans Clubhouse provides a place of camaraderie where Vets from all generations can gather together for support. Veterans can utilize the computer lab, workout room, or receive a ride to an appointment at the Bay Pines VA on HEP’s shuttle. Our HEP Activity Coordinators organize fun group outings for our Vets, so they can once again become active participants in the community as civilians. SE

HEP‘s Pet Therapy program brings furry friends to residents in need, providing a gentle healing and calming presence. Certified therapy dogs visit our campus weekly to interact with residents, including Veterans suffering from PTSD or traumatic brain injuries. Pet therapy is just one aspect of HEP’s comprehensive Wellness program, which also includes nutrition counseling and chronic disease self-management courses.

The HEP Thrift Store operates on the generosity of donors who contribute gently used clothing, furniture, home goods, and more. The Thrift Store is not only open to the public six days a week, but serves a dual purpose for HEP residents, who are provided with vouchers to shop for needed items. Even more impressive, 100% of the proceeds from items sold through the Thrift Store benefit HEP programs, contributing about $280,000 per year.

FAMILIES SERVED AT HEP IN 2016

“Last year, my daughters, Sierra (14) and Spirit (7), and I became homeless after I left an abusive partner. I called local shelters continuously and we even lived in our car for two months before we were referred to HEP. My family lived in HEP’s emergency shelter for five months, before moving into Baty Villas, HEP’s Permanent Supportive Housing for families last fall.

We basically had to start from zero, but our time here could not have been better. Not being able to provide for my children was an awful feeling, but having a stable place for us to live allowed me to concentrate on getting a profitable job as a paralegal. I struggled with drug abuse in the past, and HEP’s counseling programs really help me stay on track and maintain my sobriety. My daughters had the best Christmas of their lives this past winter, receiving new bikes, toys, and clothing through HEP’s Adopt a Family Christmas program.

Both of my girls are doing well in school and I believe that having a healthy living environment has helped their confidence grow. My youngest daughter, Spirit, loves to attend the field trips at the Children’s Learning Center, while my oldest daughter, Sierra, already has a scholarship to attend college in a few years in pursuit of becoming a surgeon. Right now, my focus is on saving money to purchase a home and completing my Bachelor’s degree. Being at HEP has meant so much to my family and I don’t know what we would have done without this organization and its caring staff.”

$749,520 Value of 6,132 dental procedures performed by Dental & Wellness Clinic volunteer dentists & hygienists.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve struggled with mental health conditions, including depression and bipolar disorder, along with PTSD stemming from childhood abuse. I self-medicated with alcohol for years, and even attempted suicide. A few years ago, I found myself homeless, and felt like I had nowhere to go. I lived in motels and shelters for six weeks before I was referred to HEP by the Clearwater Police outreach team.

After staying in HEP’s emergency shelter for 30 days, I moved into Phase I Apartments, HEP’s Permanent Supportive Housing for individuals, where I’ve lived for the past four years. My home at HEP is beautiful, and there is even a pond nearby where I like to feed ducks. I received my first dental exam in more than 20 years and subsequently had extensive dental work completed. Along with attending weekly support groups and anger management courses, the HEP Wellness Navigator referred me to counselors to treat my mental health. I also completed HEP’s six-week “Go Healthy” course, where I learned techniques to better manage chronic ailments.

Everyone at HEP, from my case manager to the Client Intake Coordinator, is so caring and willing to help. I’ve learned that sometimes you have to struggle to get where you want to be.”

HEP INTRODUCES NEW PRESIDENT & CEO, ASHLEY LOWERY This past summer, HEP happily announced the appointment of Ashley Lowery as new President and CEO. After joining the organization in 2013 and serving as Marketing Coordinator and Director of Marketing, Ashley was promoted to Director of Communications and Development in 2015. In this capacity, she worked with HEP’s Board of Directors to advance donor relationships and community partnerships, along with overseeing all marketing efforts. “I am truly humbled and honored to have been selected for this role,” said Ashley. “I am excited for the future of HEP and for what we will be able to achieve together in our mission to break the cycle of homelessness for individuals, families and Veterans in our community.”

CHAIRMAN EMERITUS BRUCE E. FYFE LEAVES LASTING LEGACY AT HEPWith heavy hearts, HEP said goodbye to beloved Chairman Emeritus Bruce Fyfe in March 2017, after a short battle with an incurable lung disease. For more than 23 years, Bruce advocated for homeless individuals and families in Tampa Bay, ensuring the most at-risk demographic have a safe place to live and resources to get back on their feet. He and his wife, Wanda, were responsible for the construction of HEP West Veterans Apartments and Clubhouse, inspired by the untimely death of their son, Brendan, a Marine Veteran who suffered from PTSD. In 2012, Bruce was honored with the Tampa Bay Lightning Community Hero Award, and in 2013 by the Invest in Others Charitable Foundation. He is deeply missed, but his incredible legacy lives on through the Bruce E. Fyfe Memorial Veterans Community, which proudly served 504 Veterans in 2017 alone. In addition, the Bruce E. Fyfe Endowment Fund established in his memory has raised more than $700,000 for programs and services of HEP.

19TH ANNUAL OTIS C. GREEN MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENTIt was a hurricane season for the record books but the storms didn’t deter HEP from holding the 19th Annual Otis C. Green Memorial Golf Tournament last September. The sold-out tourney, held at the historic Belleair Country Club, raised funds to support HEP Veterans, providing everything from food, shelter and clothing to support services like dental care, financial and legal counseling, job training, and activities. A big thank you to our presenting sponsors; Jim Barnthouse, Blume Mechanical, Lokey Charities, Pinch A Penny, Provise Management Group, LLC., along with our players and awesome volunteers, who helped us raise an incredible $83,000 for HEP Vets! We hope you’ll come out and join us at this year’s newly renamed Otis Green & Bruce Fyfe Memorial Golf Tournament at Belleair Country Club on October 5th.

WELLNESS PROGRAM MANAGER TAWNY SWAIN CASTLE DEBUTS “DETOUR” “Detour: A Story of Determination, Hope and Love” is the debut book flying off bookshelves and authored by HEP’s own Wellness Program Manager, Tawny Swain Castle. “Detour” tells Tawny’s unique story of tragedy and triumph, detailing how she overcame a debilitating disease and homelessness. Tawny, a former HEP resident herself, is now head of HEP’s Wellness program and was a recipient of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Community Hero Award in 2016. In promotion of the book, Tawny has been holding book signings at local venues like Crooked Thumb Brewery and Flanagan’s Irish Pub. “Detour” is currently available for purchase on Amazon, with proceeds benefiting HEP.

BLUR’S BARTENDER AUCTION RAISES $35,000 FOR HEPOne fundraiser that’s always a “blur” is Blur Nightclub’s Annual Most Popular Bartender in Pinellas event! Guests of this fun-filled 3rd annual event, hosted by entertainer Monica Moore, had a chance to “bid” on a night out on the town with some of the most popular bartenders in the area. In total, the event brought in $35,000 for the programs and services of HEP! Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsoring bars and restaurants, event organizers- Colleen Dwyer, James Lewis and Brooke Steinway- and all the amazing bartenders who participated! Please join us at this year’s bartender auction event on August 26th at Blur Nightclub in Dunedin!

2017 LARGE NOT-FOR-PROFIT BUSINESS OF THE YEARHEP was thrilled to be named 2017 Large Not-for-Profit Business of the Year by the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce! The prestigious community award was presented at the Chamber’s 95th Annual Meeting and was accepted by HEP leadership members. HEP was chosen from an esteemed group of nominees, including Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County, R’Club Childcare Centers and Ruth Eckerd Hall. HEP would like to thank our Board of Directors, donors, volunteers, corporate sponsors and community partners, without whom we could not assist so many individuals and families in need each year.

WALMART GIVES $75,000 TO FOOD SERVICESAs part of their commitment to fight hunger in Florida, leaders from Walmart and The Walmart Foundation presented a $75,000 check to benefit food services at HEP last year. In 2017 in Florida alone, Walmart has donated more than $82 million in monetary and in-kind contributions to local nonprofits, like HEP. “Having a partner like Walmart allows HEP to continue serving three meals a day, 365 days per year to those who need it most,” said Ashley Lowery, HEP President & CEO. “Over the years, local Walmart stores and the Walmart Foundation have shown their commitment to serving our community by donating more than $87,000 to HEP, along with serving as volunteers and providing much needed in-kind items.”

FOUR-STAR CHARITY BY CHARITY NAVIGATOROnce again, HEP is proud to have been named a four-star charity by Charity Navigator, America’s premiere charity evaluator. The four star designation is the highest award given by Charity Navigator, and is an honor that only a small fraction of charities nationwide have achieved. The rating measures an organization’s dedication to sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency with the public. You can view HEP’s full profile at www.CharityNavigator.org.

HEP NAMED TOP-RATED NON-PROFIT BY GREAT NONPROFITSGreat Nonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations, has honored HEP with its prestigious 2017 Top-Rated Award. The recognition is based on the large number of positive reviews that HEP received on Great Nonprofits website written by volunteers, donors and former clients about their personal experience with HEP. Thank you to all our loyal supporters who wrote a review! You can read all of HEP’s reviews at www.GreatNonprofits.org.

There are a variety of ways you can become a supporter of our Mission. And because HEP has been rated a four-star charity by the respected Charity Navigator, you can rest assured that your donations go directly to the programs that change the lives of those who need it most. Contact Rebecca Adams ([email protected] or 727.442.9041 ext. 135) for details on any of the Ways to Give below.

JOIN THE HEP GREEN SOCIETYThe Green Society recognizes individuals who contribute $1,000 or more to HEP on an annual basis. Financial generosity from Green Society donors help to pay for expenses like utilities, insurance, maintenance, transportation, food and salaries, as well as provide program support to individuals, families and Veterans in need.

BECOME A SUSTAINING SUPPORTERWhile a monthly gift of $10 or $20 may not seem like much, it adds up for organizations like HEP. When hundreds of people sign up to do the same, the impact can be incredible! Donations can be made on a monthly, bi-monthly or even quarterly basis. Sustaining Supporters who contribute a total of $1,000 or more annually are automatically included in HEP’s distinguished Green Society!

CREATE A LEGACY WITH PLANNED GIVINGPlanned gifts allow you to combine your charitable giving goals with your estate and financial planning goals. After making provisions for loved ones and friends, consider including HEP in your will or trust. There are many Planned Giving options – contact us today to create a lasting legacy that will enrich the lives of those in need now, and for many years to come.

JOIN WOMEN WHO CAREInspired by the proverb, “great oaks from little acorns grow,” women in our community have joined together in the spirit of philanthropy to form Women Who Care. This giving program allows like-minded women to come together and pool their charitable gifts to sustain vital youth and family services provided at HEP, through a $500 annual donation.

GIVE TO THE BRUCE E. FYFE ENDOWMENT FUNDIn the Spring of 2017, HEP lost a vital member of our family, Chairman Emeritus, Bruce E. Fyfe. For more than 23 years, Bruce advocated for homeless individuals and families in the Tampa Bay area. To continue the lasting legacy set forth by our late Chairman, the Fyfe family has established the Bruce E. Fyfe Endowment Fund through HEP. A contribution to this fund will not only provide services for those in need, but most importantly, it will offer hope to those in their most desperate hour. Please join us in honoring Bruce’s memory by making a contribution.

DONATE TO THE HEP THRIFT STOREThe HEP Thrift Store is a 13,000-square-foot treasure chest filled with gently loved items, from a wide array of clothing to one-of-a-kind collectibles. Donations are tax-deductible and 100% of the proceeds from items sold benefit HEP programs. As an added bonus, HEP residents are able to get needed items from the store at no charge through a voucher system.

VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME AND TALENTHEP volunteers provide an invaluable service to our organization by performing tasks to assist our staff and residents. In 2017, over 1,300 volunteers of all ages donated more than 18,500 hours to HEP, saving the organization almost $1 million! Individuals as well as groups can work to give back to the HEP community by providing services vital to our operations.
