FlowersandBuds–Inmostcases,youcandelicatelyremoveflowers,buds,andpetalswithyourfingers.Pinchthe“neck”orstemoftheflower,whereitattachestoitsbranch,betweenthethumbandforefinger;gentlyremoveandplaceinabreathablecontainer,suchasabasket,beforestorage.Thebesttimetoharvestisinspring—butcertainplantscanvary.

Ifflowerorbudstemsaretootough,tryusingacleanpairofscissorsorgardensnippers.

BerriesorFruits–Likewithflowers,fruitscanberemovedgentlywithyourfingers.Usingacanvasbagormetalcontainer(likeabowl)forholdingworkswell,andtakespecialcareiffruits“stain”easily(suchasElderberries).Besttimetoharvest:latesummerorfall,thoughitvarieswithplant.

Similartoflowersandbuds,usecleanscissors/gardensnippersofremovaloffruits/berriesistoodifficult.

StemsorLeaves(“AerialParts”)–Ontender-stemmedplants(suchasmintorchamomile,e.g.)stemsandleavescanbegentlyremovedwithapinchandsnapofthefingers.Fortougherplants,useaknife,scissors,orsnippers—bundleandtietogetherinbunchestoprepare

TwigsandBark–Someherbshavehealingeffectsfoundinthe“inner”bark,suchasonshrubsortrees.Usingaspecializedknifeorclippers,theoutermosttwigscanbeharvestedonalivingplant,whichshouldholdthesamehealingpropertiesasthebark.Besttoharvestinspring,whenthesapflows.

Becarefulharvestingactualbarkorcertainamountsoftwigsfromlivingplants,ifyoudon’twanttoseethembecomediseasedordie(especiallyendangered/threatenedplants).Itisconsideredmoreecologicaltotakebarkfromtreesorshrubsthathavejustfallenandareexpectedtobedeceased.

Roots–Withaspade,shovelorgloves,removetherootfromthegroundofthedesiredherbyouwishtouse.Forsomeplants,youcanalsodigdownandonlyremovepartoftheroottokeeptheplantalive(suchaswithEchinaceaandotherendangeredplants).Besttoharvestinlatefallorwinter.WholePlant–Iftherearemanyplantsinthearea,theyarenotendangered,andyouplantouseallofitspartsformedicineathome—usesomesturdyglovesandpullitoutbytheroot.Stubbornplant?Usetheaidofashovelorspadeifaplant’srootsaretoostrongforpullingoutbyhandalone!
