    It seems that every time I turn on my new (and fabulous) 4K TV, I find an awards show being broadcast. I guess we really are in the middle of awards season. The Golden Globes and Academy Awards, along with the Grammys, Canadian Screen Awards and Junos are behind us. To come are the Emmy and Tony Awards (my personal favourite).

    The building, development and renovation industries are not immune to awards fever, either. Last month, the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) partnering with HOMES Publishing Group presented the first of their annual awards, the Renovation and Custom Home Awards. Later this month, the Hamilton-Halton Home Builders Association and the Durham Region Home Builders Association will bestow hardware

    on the best in the business in their regions.But the big gala, the event everybody in the

    industry is waiting for, is the BILD Awards, where entrants from across the GTA are celebrated and honoured for their excellence in sales, marketing, design and construction.

    The Renovator of the Year award was presented to Eurodale Developments for the third time since 2010. The award recognizes a renovator who sets the standard for the rest of the sector in their leadership and commitment to customer service.

    The Best Renovation Under $75,000 was awarded to Monarch Kitchen and Bath Centre. The renovation involved integrating the kitchen into a homes adjacent rooms to facilitate entertaining while maintaining its eat-in functionality.

    Carick Home Improvements earned the award for Best Renovation $75,000 to $150,000 by customizing a homes main floor to match a contemporary design and open-concept kitchen.

    The Best Renovation $150,000 to $300,000 award was presented to Tipeq Inc. for transforming an outdated, dysfunctional semi-detached house into a light-filled, energy-efficient and modern home.

    T he top renovators and custom homebuilders in the GTA were recognized in March at the Renovation and Custom Home Awards sponsored by HOMES Publishing Group and presented by the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD).

    The awards are an annual event created by BILD in 1999 to recognize renovators for professionalism, quality of work and industry leadership. Nominees are evaluated by a team of industry professionals, with the Renovator of the Year award judged based on survey results from previous clients.

    MODERN DESIGNSupdated to make new buildings easier to access. For people who have low vision, there are new requirements for tactile walking surfaces that indicate the top of stairs and platform edges.

    Also required under the updated code is the installation of visual fire and smoke alarms. As well, there has to be barrier-free access in between storeys, and building entrances, barrier-free washrooms, and common areas like party and movie rooms need to have power door mechanisms.

    It takes an innovative design approach to incorporate accessible aspects into new residential buildings. Designing accessible units, wider hallways and other elements can be challenging, especially in midrise buildings where space is already limited. Its not impossible but it takes

    A bout 15 per cent of Ontarians have some form of disability according to Statistics Canada, and the GTAs homebuilders and land developers are designing residential and commercial buildings to be more accessible and barrier-free.

    When constructing any building in Ontario, builders must comply with the Ontario Building Code and in 2015 the code was updated to include more accessibility requirements for new office, industrial and multi-residential buildings.

    The code now requires that 15 per cent of homes within a new multi-unit residential building have a barrier-free path. Doors and hallways have to be wider to allow room for a wheelchair, and ramp dimensions have been

    some thought about where the units go within the building and how to accommodate for the expanded interior space.

    Rockport Group has a multi-faceted revitalization project starting construction this summer at Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue West called The Weston Hub, located at 33 King Street and nearby 22 John Street. Its a collaboration with the City of Toronto, Artscape Toronto Inc. and Woodbourne Capital Management Inc. that will rehabilitate a vacant building into live/work spaces, a community cultural hub and add a 30-storey market rental building. The two buildings will be accessible with ample corridors and wider suite entryways. Both will also have a wheelchair lift where there are staircases in common areas, barrier-free washrooms and accessible amenities.

    At the Diamond On Yonge in North York, by Diamante Development, 10 per cent of each type of unit is barrier-free. This allows homebuyers to choose their suite knowing it will have a barrier-free path throughout and at least one washroom will have space for a wheelchair to fully turn around.

    The code also requires existing buildings that are being extensively renovated to follow the new rules, but other existing homes and new single-family, semi-detached and townhomes are not required by law to implement these changes. The only rule that applies to new lowrise home construction is that smoke alarms have to be installed with a visual component.
