  • This summer, Idaho will celebrate its quasquicentennial. Idaho became the 43rd state admitted into the Union when President Benjamin Harrison signed an Act of Congress 125 years ago on July 3, 1890. In his State of the Union Address in December of 1890, President Harrison offered his thoughts on Idahos entry. The admission of the States of Wyoming and Idaho to the Union are events full of interest and congratulation, not only to the people of those States now happily endowed with a full participation in our privileges and responsibilities, but to all our people. Another belt of States stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific. For more information on the history of the Gem State, go online to visitidaho.org/facts-about-idaho/.

SafetySense: FireworksOne of the most cherished and popular holidays of the year is Independence Day. In addition to summer fun, baseball, hot dogs, and ice cream, the 4th of July also means fireworks. But the

celebration can turn into an injury if you and your family are not careful.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 200 people per day go to the emergency room in the weeks leading up to and following the 4th due to fireworks related injuries. Interestingly, a third of all fireworks injuries are caused by sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degreeshot enough to melt some metals.

To help make this summers 4th of July holiday a safe one for everyone, here are a few fireworks safety tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety.

An adult should supervise all firework activities. Never give fireworks to children.

Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks. Light one firework at a time and then quickly

move away. Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area; away from

buildings and vehicles. Never relight a dud firework. Wait 20 minutes

and then soak it in a bucket of water. Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down

and place in a metal trash can away from any

building or combustible materials until the next day. Never point or throw fireworks at another person. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in

case of fire or other mishap. Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them

off in metal or glass containers. After fireworks complete their burning, douse the

spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
