EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

OF PRE-KINDERGARTENERS MET

OR EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS

FOR READING 94%

Fairmont’s Early Childhood Education program challenges young learners to become independent, and helps them become strong readers and writers. Children participate in hands-on activities and are taught in ways that allow them to excel beyond their peers at other schools.- Brandie Foeldi, Kindergarten Teacher for 15 Years

at the Fairmont Anaheim Hills Campus

*Accreditation at the Historic Anaheim Campus in progress.

The foundation of lifetime success starts early at Fairmont. Fairmont’s high-quality, NAEYC accredited*, Early Childhood Education program ensures children master key literacy and math skills by the time they enter kindergarten. They also gain the developmental skills and academic readiness necessary to

succeed in our advanced elementary program. In addition to studying numbers, letters, phonics, and handwriting, young learners also experience enriching activities such as technology, music, physical education, science, and art. Students begin learning a foreign language in pre-kindergarten.

Character education is an integral part of Fairmont’s curriculum from preschool

through high school. These programs help students think about decisions they make and prepare them for leadership roles by improving decision-making qualities, making students accountable for their actions, increasing cognitive skills related to being just and fair with others, as well as demonstrating their civic duties and social responsibilites.

Character Counts! is a framework centered on basic values called the "Six Pillars of Character," trustworthiness, fairness, respect, caring, responsibility, and citizenship.

BY THE END OF FIRST GRADE, FAIRMONT STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO WRITE IN CURSIVE

ELEMENTARY & JUNIOR HIGH

While these graphs compare standardized test scores between Fairmont and other local schools, it is important to note that Fairmont uses a more rigorous standardized test than the Smarter Balanced (SBAC) test that California public schools use. Fairmont administers the Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP-4). According to Educational Records Bureau, CTP-4 is testing students one grade level ahead, whereas SBAC is measuring grade level standards. The CTP-4 is 98% aligned with Common Core testing (CCSS) in Math and 81% aligned to CCSS Language Arts.

Fairmont Private Schools has a rich history rooted in tradition and academic excellence. With over 60 years of educational experience, Fairmont prides itself on providing students with an individualized education and advanced curriculum allowing them to accelerate in language arts and math.

Understanding that students thrive when challenged, Fairmont cultivates critical thinking, creativity, collaborative learning, problem-solving skills, and social responsibility. Our educational environment nurtures a sense of self, fosters confidence, and creates tomorrow’s global leaders.

HIGH SCHOOL

COLLEGE PREP

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

Fairmont Preparatory Academy’s College Prep (CP) curriculum gives students the preparation they need to be successful in collegiate courses by teaching them successful study methods, critical thinking, and organizational skills.

Students have the opportunity to take innovative courses not commonly found in high school, including Biomedical Ethics, Computer Science, Digital Multimedia, Fashion Design, Film, Forensics, and Speech.

Fairmont Prep's CP courses are University of California (UC) approved. Our graduation requirements meet or exceed the requirements of the UC, therefore, students completing these "a-g" courses will have met or exceeded the minimum course requirement to apply all UC campuses.

Fairmont Prep’s Advanced Placement (AP) program has been recognized by the College Board as having one of the “highest student success rates in the state of California” in math, science, and technology. Unlike many other schools, Fairmont does not limit the number of AP courses a student can take, and many students take AP courses as early as 9th grade.

Fairmont Prep’s International Baccalaureate Program (IB) is an internationally acclaimed course of study, meeting worldwide standards of excellence. An IB Diploma is quickly becoming the “gold standard” in what defines an eligible college applicant, with a reputation for high-standards and pedagogical leadership.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB)

By offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, Fairmont Prep demonstrates its commitment to global education and diversity.- Mike Wheeler, International Baccalaureate

Diploma Program Coordinator and Teacher

The International Business Program (IBP) prepares motivated students for matriculation into the country’s top universities and develops a strong cultural intelligence to navigate the nuances of global commerce. Project-based courses allow students to expedite their learning and earn college credit for select courses and honors credit for the majority of courses. They engage in coursework dealing with international finance, marketing, management, economics, ethics, entrepreneurship, and diplomacy.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PROGRAM (IBP)

ADVANCED MATHFairmont’s math program rivals those of the top math and science schools across the country, allowing students to take college level math courses rarely offered in high school. Through a partnership with California State University, Fullerton, students can earn direct university credit for most of Fairmont's advanced math courses, giving them the opportunity to earn up to 22 units of university credit by the time they graduate.

Recognized by the College Board as “one of the top math, science, and technology schools in California,” the Advanced Science & Engineering Program at Fairmont Preparatory Academy consists of courses identified as “exemplary and innovative” by the University of California. ASEP core courses employ problem based learning strategies to teach real world skills. When combined with accelerated and advanced courses, the ASEP program provides an unparalleled opportunity for STEM students.

ADVANCED SCIENCE & ENGINEERING PROGRAM (ASEP)

For me, ASEP is an entertaining and educational approach to understanding the scientific world.

FRESHMAN YEAR: Counselors help students map out an individualized Four-Year Plan to make the most of their time at Fairmont.

SOPHOMORE YEAR: Student progress is assessed, and students are introduced to college admissions testing and application timelines.

JUNIOR YEAR: Students meet with counselors to decide on colleges and prepare for the fall application process.

SENIOR YEAR: Counselors work one-on-one with students, meeting as necessary to finalize college plans and applications, and ultimately help make a final college decision. Counselors get to know students individually, help guide them, and write personalized letters of recommendation.

A Fairmont “lifer,” Claire Hsu began her stellar academic career as a kindergartner at Fairmont’s North Tustin Campus, studying there through 8th grade. Continuing on at Fairmont Prep, Claire graduated as the Class of 2016 valedictorian. She was VP of robotics, captain of JV basketball, treasurer of KidWorks, and part of UNICEF, Spanish Honors Society, and Encore for the Arts. While an intern at Boeing, she helped create a satellite concept to monitor global water levels. Claire is now in her first year of study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

ACADEMICS & BEYONDWith over 60 years of experience, Fairmont's reputation for academic excellence is unparalleled. Students receive an individualized education through advanced curriculum that allows them to accelerate in language arts and math. Applying modern educational concepts with proven methodologies inspires young learners and allows them to make real-world connections across academic subjects.

Fairmont Private Schools takes pride in nurturing the whole child, focusing not only on academic excellence in core subjects, but also fostering character development and an appreciation for the arts. With an emphasis on both academic and creative subjects, Fairmont equips students for higher education as they develop skills in critical reasoning, adaptability, collaboration, and creativity.

BROADCOM MASTERS® MIDDLE SCHOOL STEM COMPETITION SEMIFINALISTS

The Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) nominates 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who are among the top 10 percent of the participants at regional and state science fairs. Fairmont North Tustin's Sasha Ronaghi, 8th grade, and Ethan Zuo, 6th grade, were 2 of the top 300 semifinalists selected from more than 6,000 nominees.

CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT: IF I HAD $1,000,000One 4th grade math class was assigned the challenge of spending one million dollars to the penny. This project prompted students to find advertisements in real life to validate the prices, keep a balance sheet, create a report, and present their findings to the class. It turned an abstract concept into something concrete, activating different areas of the brain, and leading to deeper levels of learning. This is one of the many reasons why Fairmont students continually receive top marks in quantitative reasoning.

Even though Fairmont is known for academic rigor, every year we exceed expectations by taking students

with average and above average abilities and help them to achieve their highest potential and gain acceptance to

the top universities.* No other school in our area can match these achievements.

2016 OC SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR AWARDSThe mission of the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair is “To enable students to improve their science and engineering skills and literacy while inspiring them to consider careers in STEM fields. We are committed to challenging students to inquire, design, investigate, and present scientific and engineering concepts through hands-on experimentation.”

TECHNOLOGY

CALIFORNIA STATE SCIENCE FAIR AWARDSThe State Science Fair is the final science fair of the academic year for California students in grades 6–12. In the 2016 competition, 941 participants from 421 schools presented 845 projects. Six students from Fairmont were selected to compete.

SCIENCE

Fairmont's Technology Enhanced Curriculum (TEC) focuses on teaching the essential skills of our digital age. Integrated classrooms feature iPads, interactive whiteboards, Apple TV, ActiVotes, and Wi-Fi connectivity. All students, preschool through 12th grade, are connected to a learning management system for remote access to online learning tools and activities, including interactive textbooks.

In computer lab, students learn coding, programming, keyboarding, common applications, logic concepts, presentation skills, teamwork, and problem solving, as well as advanced science and math concepts.

Higher-level classes offer more experience with animation, graphic applications, and computer programming. Entry level computer science programs feature visual blocks rather than lines of code and syntax, helping to make the learning of advanced concepts feel more like a game and less like work.

Beginning in 2nd grade, students can participate in Fairmont's robotics program, gaining hands-on experience with advanced engineering concepts. Fairmont’s youngest engineers start their careers with Beginning LEGO Robotics, an extracurricular course that teaches basic robot programming. The course allows children to be creative and have fun, while also developing crucial social and critical thinking skills. In junior high,

students compete against other schools in the FIRST LEGO League. At Fairmont Prep, the FIRST Robotics Competition closely mimics real world engineering, requiring advanced

skills and concepts. Students are challenged to finance, design, build, and program their own robot while meeting the specifications required by the league.

FAIRMONT ROBOTICS COMPETE AT LEGOLAND

With the strong foundation laid by Fairmont’s math and science courses, children work on fun and engaging engineering projects, in class and out. Students can be found engineering a bridge out of LEGOs, creating an entire world in Minecraft, designing a spaceship, or building a working marble rollercoaster.

When they get to Fairmont Prep, interested and adept students enroll in the Advanced Science and Engineering Program (ASEP) where they choose from advanced courses, such as Biomedical Engineering or Engineering Projects in Community Service. The College Board and the University of California have recognized courses in the program as “exemplary and innovative.”

RoboPanthers Ice, a robotics team from the Historic Anaheim Campus, earned an invitation to the First LEGO League Southern California Championships at LEGOLAND in December where they competed for the regional championship and an invitation to the state competition. Teams are judged on core values, robot

design, robot performance, and a project based on this year’s theme, "Animal Antics." RoboPanthers Ice received almost perfect scores in the

core values category and were awarded a “Judges Award” after impressing the judges with their loyalty, care, and respect.

FAIRMONT ALUMNI

PHILLIP CHEW, 2016 U.S. OLYMPIANFormer Fairmont Anaheim Hills student Phillip Chew was a member of the U.S. Olympic Badminton Team that competed at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games this summer. Dubbed the “Tiger Woods of Badminton,” Chew started playing when he was little over a year old, winning his first gold medal at the age of five at the U.S. Badminton Junior Nationals in the “9 and under” boys doubles and singles categories. A lifelong Orange County resident, Chew attended Fairmont Private Schools – Anaheim Hills Campus from preschool through 6th grade, practicing badminton up to three hours per day. With his “dream” of making the Olympics in sight, Chew left Fairmont so he could devote himself to practice, training upwards of seven hours a day. Hard work and dedication paid off, as he won gold medals almost every year from 1999 until finally achieving his goal and competing at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Phillip

currently attends the University of California at Irvine, studying Business Economics, with the goal of competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, this time with his brother (and former Fairmont student) Ryan as his teammate and doubles partner.

TERENCE CAMILON, CLASS OF 2016Class of 2016’s Terence Camilon was a standout student at Fairmont Prep, maintaining a strong GPA while dividing his time between his studies, sports, and extracurricular activities. Among his many accomplishments, Terence trained with the Long Beach Boathouse Team and was twice selected to compete at Junior Nationals for U.S. Rowing. He dedicated countless hours to volunteer work with the Ronald McDonald House Charities and is a co-founder of the Beyond Hunger Club. Terence also performed research on Down syndrome, co-authoring a medical paper under review for publication. The last of a family of brothers to graduate Fairmont, Terence chose to attend the College of Charleston, after having received offers of admission to Boston University, Case Western Reserve, Drexel, George Washington, University of the Pacific, Temple, and Union College.

CHRISTINE FONG, CLASS OF 2007A Fairmont student from preschool at Anaheim Hills all the way through graduation at Fairmont Prep, Christine Fong didn’t know what she wanted to be when she grew up, but she knew she was prepared for whatever came her way. Today, Christine is a Job Captain/Project Manager for MCG Architecture in Irvine, California. She leads the Starbucks account team, providing management, design, coordination, and construction document production in all project phases for over 75 new and remodeled stores in Los Angeles and Central California. By the end of 2017, Christine hopes to be a fully licensed architect. A member of the Class of 2007, Christine was active beyond academics, participating in varsity basketball, cross country, track & field, and yearbook, before moving on to earn her degree in architecture from the University of Southern California.
