Take a close look at the back of a dollar bill. On the left side is a pyramid, with an eye at the top. Over the pyramid is the Latin in-scription “annuit coeptis.” It means: “Providence has Favored Our Un-dertakings.”

The pyramid symbolizes the strength of the union of the states. The top of the pyramid is un-finished, meaning there is still work to be done to make our system even better. The eye stands for the all-seeing God, Supreme Builder of the Universe. Ben-jamin Franklin chose this motto because he believed imagination was the singular characteristic of the people he helped to forge into a new nation.

I think Ben Franklin would be pleas-antly surprised where imagination got this great nation.

“The most interesting people are the people with the most interesting pictures in their minds,” said Earl Nightingale, one of the pioneers of the motivational movement.

I’m always fascinated listening to people who see the world through a dif-ferent lens. Most of us have ideas of what

we’d like to change, but not necessarily the vision to make it happen. People who can clear the negative clutter from prob-lems will always be successful.

The famous inventor Thomas Edison used to say his deafness was his great-est blessing. A blessing because it saved him from having to listen to reasons why things couldn’t be done.

Curtis Carlson, founder of the Carl-son Companies and one of my mentors, spent his life building and expanding. When asked what personal qualities con-tributed to the building of his successful empire, Curt responded, “I think my suc-cess is the result of my ability to see and to imagine how things can be. I’m not distracted by how things are.”

It’s never too late to develop your imagination, although I believe that the longer you suppress it, the more chal-lenging it will be. Consider this lesson that was shared by Gordon McKenzie, a well-known creative force at Hallmark Cards.

McKenzie often visited schools to talk about his work. He usually in-troduced himself as an artist, and then would ask the students, “How many of you are artists?”

In kindergarten and first grade, al-most every hand was enthusiastically raised. In second grade classrooms, about three-fourths of the children would raise their hands, but not as eagerly. Just a few

third-graders admitted their artistic tal-ent.

By the time he interviewed the sixth graders, he said not one of them raised a hand. They thought being an artist was “uncool.” (My guess is that Curt Carlson was one of those kids who didn’t mind being “uncool.”)

So if we want to cultivate creativity and imagination, a good place to start is with children. Children don’t recognize

limits on possibilities. They look through that different lens, that is, until we train them to focus on the practical.

Children are open to trying all kinds of solutions. We would do well to learn from them that there is rarely just one way to get a job done.

A friend shared a story from the NewsOK website about two parents working on their Christmas cards with their 6-year-old son. The son’s job was to lick the stamps (back before self-adhe-sive stamps were available.) But the little boy balked because he didn’t like the taste of the glue on the stamps. His par-ents prevailed, and reluctantly, he went to his room to finish his assignment.

Before long, he emerged from his room with a big smile on his face and handed his father the pile. Every enve-lope was stamped. His stunned father said, “But I thought you didn’t like the way the stamps tasted when you licked them!”

“Yeah, that was yucky,” the son re-plied. “So I just licked the envelopes and then stuck the stamps on.”

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2Of course, I love a good story about

envelopes!From Napoleon Hill’s famous book

Law of Success, comes this summarizing thought: “Just as the oak tree develops from the germ that lies in the acorn, and the bird develops from the germ that lies asleep in the egg, so will your material achievements grow out of the organized plans that you create in your imagination. First comes the thought; then organiza-tion of that thought into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. The beginning, as you will ob-serve, is in your imagination.”

Mackay’s Moral: The only person who can put limits on your imagination is you.

By Pastor Gary TaylorMany people in Todd County know

me as a pastor as I have been involved in church ministry in Todd County since 1998 in one form or another. As the current pastor of Peace United Church in Long Prairie and Grey Eagle United Methodist Church I am also serving on the Board of Directors of a local non-profit organization that has helped many crime victims over the years, Hand of Hope Resource Center. It is in that ca-pacity that I write this letter.

Hands of Hope relies on grants, do-nations and some fund-raisers to fund its work helping crime victims in their hour of need. Our biggest funding source it the Department of Public Safety, Office of Justice Programs (OJP). Recently we learned that OJP has cut its funding of programs around the state by $1.5 mil-lion. A few programs were not funded. Fortunately, Hands of Hope was funded but the grant for fiscal year 2013 was cut by $76,000. This has forced us to make some difficult decisions about staffing while we work hard to continue to help crime victims.

One of those difficult decisions was about our presence in Long Prairie. We want to be near the Sheriff’s Office and Court system in Todd County so that we can be responsive to crime victims but we can no longer afford the rent for our offices in downtown Long Prairie. We are asking the Todd County Commis-

sioners to approve Hands of Hope rent-ing space in the Todd County Annex at a rate similar to the rate we pay Morrison County for our offices in the Historic Courthouse in Little Falls.

As a citizen of Todd County I ask our commissioners to make that approval. If you want Hands of Hope to be a pres-ence in Todd County to help our crime victims, contact your commissioner and ask him to vote for that approval.

Community Country Church to host the Wissman Family in Concert

Hailing from the Midwest, the fif-teen-member Wissman family have spent the past 11 years delighting audiences nationwide with their delightful blend of gospel bluegrass music. Featuring Loren, Gloria, and their 13 children, each con-cert is filled with tight vocal harmonies, award winning bluegrass pickin’ and memorable family moments.

Traveling in their 45 foot bus, the Wissman family annually share their musical talents with an average of 200 services each year throughout 35 states, Canada and Mexico. Events have ranged from church services to conferences, con-ventions, county fairs, retirement parks, Christian schools, and prison ministry. In 2011 they completed their fourth Christ-mas season performing in Branson, Mis-souri.

Filling their home with life and laugh-ter, the 13 Wissman children range in age from 28 to 4 years: Rachel, Ruth, Josiah, Bethany, Andrew, Elizabeth, Matthias, Stephen, Hannah, Susanna, Alaythia, Na-thaniel, and Charissa. Due to marriage and job responsibilities, three of the older children no longer tour with the family.

Each of the children are an essential part of each concert, singing in harmonies and playing a wide variety of instruments, including: guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, dobro, harmonica, fiddles, hammered dulcimer, cello, flute, and keyboard. The variety and creativity in their musical ar-rangements will be sure to give you a toe tappin’ good time.

But to the Wissmans, each concert is about more than musical talent. It’s

a showcase for their genuine passion to share the hope and promise found in Je-sus Christ. The music and message pro-vide a colorful kaleidoscope, reflecting the joy and purpose found in Christ. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to ex-perience these unique elements that make each concert an unforgettable family ex-perience!

The Concert will take place on Tues-day August 7th at 7:00 p.m. Seating is limited, so come early. A free will offer-ing will be taken.

Community Country Church is lo-cated on Highway 17 across from Hold-ingford public school.

Butterflies have been used to repre-sent a carefree life; lightness and free-dom. Is that really what they are about? While they delight us by flitting around our roadsides and gardens, they are re-ally on some serious business!

This presentation will help give an understanding of how the lives of but-terflies relate to our own existence and how our existence relates to butterflies.

A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way. -Mark Twain

Thought for the week:

A group of first grade students was touring our Gardens. One of them tripped, fell and skinned his knee. We carefully cleaned it and bandaged it. Glad that he didn’t cry, I complimented him by saying, “You are a brave boy. You didn’t cry.”

“I’m not gonna cry,” the boy an-swered. “I’m gonna sue.” He loved us even when we did not love Him. And there is no one in the world that He loves more than you.

Some of us swerve to the left and some of us swing to the right. But most of us are centered – self centered. When things go wrong, we stew, and some-times we stew long enough that we want to sue or try to figure out a way to get even or think of some type of revenge.

It is the love of gold that makes some people bitter, but it is the love of God that always makes people better.

Where have you placed your love?

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

The Minneso-ta Supreme Court, on Tuesday of this week, will hear oral arguments on Secretary of State Mark Ritchie’s title changes to the Photo ID and Mar-riage Amendment c o n s t i t u t i o n a l amendments. It’s hoped the process can be expedited,

and the Court will issue its ruling soon. The Legislature passed the two measures during the past session; however Ritchie changed the titles of both amendments.

A new law goes into effect on Aug. 1 pertaining to the sale of synthetic drugs in Minnesota. The penalty has been en-hanced to a felony, punishable by impris-onment for up to five years, a $10,000 fine, or both. Previously, the penalty for selling these “designer drugs” had been limited to a gross misdemeanor. The bill also al-lows the state Pharmacy Board to adopt rule making more quickly, in an effort to keep up with drug-makers who make slight

changes in the chemical make-up of drugs to avoid having them classified as “illegal.”

Minnesota Speaker of the House Kurt Zellers is pictured on the cover of the cur-rent issue of CAPITOL IDEAS, the nation-al publication of the Council of State Gov-ernments. The general theme of several of the magazine’s articles revolves around the topic of what services governments can afford to provide. One discusses the ‘new normal’ states are striving for in relation to the services they offer. In another, Speak-er Zellers goes one-on-one in answering questions pertaining to recent changes en-acted by the Minnesota Legislature.

In addition to civic celebrations, this is also the time of year for county fairs. The Stearns County Fair ended its run Sunday in Sauk Centre. A highlight was the 4-H Livestock Auction Friday evening in the arena. An enthusiastic crowd of bidders was on hand to purchase premiums on an outstanding line-up of livestock, ranging all the way from dairy and beef cattle to chickens and sheep. The Pope County Fair gears up this week in Glenwood with its 4-H auction scheduled for Saturday morn-ing.

There is much talk about the ongoing

drought that’s affecting large parts of the country. Conditions farther south - in Mis-souri, Iowa, and parts of Illinois and In-diana - are bad and some corn fields have already been plowed up or chopped for silage. Minnesota seems to be the “Gar-den State” as more rain has fallen here, or at least in parts of the state. Southwest Minnesota is still extremely dry, while northeastern areas have received plentiful amounts of rain. Our farm has received rainfall on five separate occasions in the past week or so, but the total amount of all those events has been around one inch. Areas to the north and east have received heavier amounts. Crops on heavy soil are still green, while those on lighter ground without irrigation, for the most part, have dried up and are beyond help.

Rep. Anderson can be contacted by email at [email protected] or by phone at 651-296-4317. To receive email updates sign-up on his webpage at www.house.mn/13a.

Bridge closures scheduled for Stearns County Road 159/I-94 near St. John’s University

Motorists traveling on Stearns County Road 159/135th Avenue near St. John’s University will encounter detours, road closures and flaggers as the bridge span-ning Interstate 94 is intermittently closed Aug. 6-9.

On Monday, Aug. 6, the bridge will re-duce to a single lane with flaggers control-ling traffic from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

On Tuesday, Aug. 7, through Thurs-day, Aug. 9, the bridge will close in both directions for eight out of every 10 minutes throughout the day. For two out of every 10 minutes, flaggers will control alternat-ing traffic across the bridge.

A signed detour will direct westbound I-94 motorists travelling to Collegeville farther along westbound I-94 to south-

bound Stearns County Road 9 in Avon, eastbound I-94 and back to southbound County Road 159/135th Avenue.

All ramps at the bridge will remain open at all times.

The closures are needed as crews in-stall electronic instruments to collect data as part of a study to measure bridge per-formance. The University of Minnesota’s Department of Civil Engineering is con-ducting this study.

The Minnesota Department of Trans-portation advises motorists to seek alter-nate routes, slow down and use extra cau-tion when navigating any work zone and never enter a closed road.

The Episcopal Church of The Good Samaritan, Sauk Centre, invites the pub-lic to join them in the Parish Hall each Monday evening in August to view video presentations of the Parables of Jesus by the noted theologian, Dr. Kenneth Bailey, a brilliant scholar in Middle Eastern Stud-ies.

The presentations begin Monday, Au-gust 6, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. and will end at 8:30 p.m. There is no charge and light re-freshments will be served. The series will continue on Monday, August 13th, 20th and 27th.

Dr. Kenneth Bailey, one of the fore-most experts of New Testament theology, was raised in the Middle East as a child and resided in Beirut as an adult where he served as Professor of New Testament and Head of the Bible Development De-partment at the Near East School of The-ology. He speaks Arabic as a native and is noted for his studies of the parables of Jesus based upon the culture, mores and traditions of the region during the time of Jesus on earth. Dr. Bailey has been Canon Theologian for the Episcopal Diocese of

A new look at the ParablesCyprus and the Gulf, residing in Nicosia, and eventually held the same post for the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Bailey’s videos are informative, entertaining and often downright funny. They are guaranteed to bring new insights on the parables to everyone, ranging from beginner to experienced Bible student.

Fr. Roger Phillips, Priest in Charge at Good Samaritan, comments that he has had two opportunities to learn from Dr. Bailey directly. He was amazed each time at the amount of knowledge Dr. Bailey imparts to his students and, most signifi-cantly, his ability to explain hidden inter-pretations no one but those who have lived in the Middle East would understand. Fr. Phillips urges everyone who is even slightly interested to join the parishioners at Good Samaritan for the initial presenta-tion and for each successive offering dur-ing the month of August. Please join us at the “church with the red door,” 529 Main Street S, Sauk Centre beginning Monday, August 6th, at 7 p.m. to view the first vid-eo presentation on the Parables of Jesus.

Come join us on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 7:30 p.m. for an event designed to help prepare and equip incoming and current students for college life.

Throughout the night, we will dis-cuss topics such as: why you are in col-lege, roommates, money, study habits, fun and how to survive college without regrets. You will hear from the following great speakers: Dr. Scott Moats, Crown College-Tom Goehle, NDSU Basketball Coach Brent Aakre, NDSU graduate and your MC Brittiny Sheehey, SCSU grad-uate and A-Team Rep. Adam and Jenny Roub, CRU at SCSU.

Come load up on wisdom (John 10:10), food: pizza, pop and Caribou coffee, music and of course prizes!

This is a free event so you can save

During a game, the coach asked one of his young players: “Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?”

The little boy nodded yes.“Do you understand that what

matters is winning together as a team?”The little boy nodded yes.“So,” the coach continued, “when a

strike is called, or you are out at first, you don’t argue or curse or attack the umpire. Do you understand all that?”

Again, the boy nodded yes.“Good,” said the coach. “Now go

over there and explain it to your mother.”
