Honda and their dealer Swansway Garages Group opted for a 49.35 kWp rooftop solar PV system to boost the energy efficiency of a newly built showroom garage in Stretford, south west of Manchester.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Honda Manchester in Stretford is run by the family owned Swansway Garages Group.

In 2012 Honda and their dealer Swansway Group decided to upgrade the Manchester showroom. As part of this new build BREEAM Excellent project, they were looking to add a solar PV system to boost energy efficiency and to cut annual electricity costs, while taking advantage of high Feed-In Tariff rates.

Kingspan Energy’s expert team of engineers designed, project-managed and installed the most appropriate solution for the showroom - a tilted roof mounted PV system, which was patch-welded to the newly fitted Kingspan Topdek membrane roof, negating the need for additional ballast or through fixing, and ensuring a fast installation.

The entire project, including the system’s commissioning and hand-over took just two weeks and was finalised ahead of the deadline set for the 31st March 2012.

The Honda Manchester showroom’s roof mounted solar PV array consists of 210 PV modules, 235 Wp each, capable of generating circa 41 MWh annually.

Adding to the building’s environmental credentials, it is expected that almost all of the energy generated by the system will be used on site, and thus will significantly reduce the amount of electricity needed from the grid.

Gordon Hunt, Property Manager, Honda Motor Europe commented: “Vehicle showrooms use a lot of electricity in terms of heating, cooling and lighting, so we are always looking for smarter ways to take control of our costs. The rooftop solar PV system from Kingspan Energy has allowed us to do just that, as well as benefit from the financial returns under the Government’s Feed-in Tariff Scheme”.
