Rotary: The Early YearsIn autumn of 1905, the first roster was printed containing 19 member & 2 honorary names. (For the benefit of some of our own members, Club singing was introduced that year!) In August 1910, Rotarians gathered in Chicago as the National Association of Rotary Clubs for their first national convention, with 16 clubs. They elected founder Paul Harris as their 1st president; he would go on to serve another term. He was followed by Glenn Mead of Penn., Russell Greiner of Missouri, & so on. The first non-American president was from Winnipeg, Canada, in 1917 (whose clas-sification was listed as Christian), followed by other non-Americans from Ontario in 1921; Tampico, Mexico, 1928; London, England, 1931; Que-bec, 1933; Paris, France, 1937; Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1940, etc. For more info, visit rotaryfirst100.org or rotaryglobalhistoryfellowship.org.

Guests in attendance: None; 14 members in attendanceRotary Moment: “I find a quiet satisfaction in lighting up someone else’s life, in being part of building a park, funding a medical clinic, or helping reforest thousands of acres with trees.” George M. Yelter, 2003-04 Dist Gov, Dist 5890, Greater HoustonDiane reported on the progress of (1) the May 17th Operation Thirst Project at the Tex-Hill Armed Forces Day celebration wherein Rotarians will sell & serve water; (2) the May 1st Fellowship of Christian Athletes National Day of Prayer event to be held at HISD, again asking for volunteers to help with set-up, serving & being in attendance, asking anyone wishing to help to email her as soon as possible.President thanked Diane & Evelyne for the new look of the informative & at-tractive weekly Newsletter; stated the the $1,500 Share The Joy Grant had been received, and, again reminded everyone that it was not too late to sign up for the Rotary District Conference to be held May 2-4.Speaker: Dorothy Schorp, Head Librarian at the Hondo Public Library gave a report of the progress of the new Library/community/senior center construc-tion project, noting that they are awaiting news of the USDA loan application pending a letter from the State Historic Preservation Officer. She thanked Mayor Danner & City Manager Litchfield for all their assistance, including meeting with Congressman Gallego. She is working on several grants (which look hopeful) & report on the many donations received thus far, thanked all who donated toward the project. She then explained the WHY of a new library & community center, having fielded public comments such as not needing a new library, never been in a library, what does a library do for me? She quoted from a Uvalde newspaper “When people come to a community they look at schools, churches, hospitals, & libraries.” Hondo has pretty much met all of the criteria with possible excep-tion of an expanded library & with growth comes the responsibility of a more educated community, including technology. She shared what she’s learned from HISD re: “flipped” classrooms (student listens to a lecture online & does the homework in class), MOOCs (Massive Open Online Classroom open to tens or hundreds of thousands of students worldwide), peer collaborations (another name for group learning) - all trends with an emphasis to online learn-ing. Also, trying to meet the needs of the various service organizations, many of which would appreciate the availability of a full service kitchen, separate entrance & restrooms, & an open social area. Soon, they will convert microfilm to digital newspaper articles as far back as 1860, HISD photos & more. She ended quoting author Caitlin Moran, “A library in the middle of a community is a cross between an emergency exit, a life raft and a festival. They are cathedrals of the mind, hospitals of the soul, & theme parks of the imagination”, asking all of us to look at a library with new eyes & NOT just a building.Raffle: Evelyne gave the “winning” ticket to guest Dorothy Schorp, BUT....she didn’t do a very good job of selecting the proper card - oh well!!!
