Honeywell’s HART Technology Innovations – Leading the Way

Honeywell has a long history of adopting HART technology early – integrating it into our innovative instrumentation, control systems and input/output modules:

• Innovative implementation of HART 7 in SmartLine pressure transmitters

• First to offer a transmitter display that can show HART 7 user messages without requiring a handheld or host application

• Plug-and-play HART 7 support in the Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) HART-enabled I/O modules

• Reliable Wireless HART Adaptor to allow wired and wireless HART devices to communicate over an ISA100 network–

• First to emulate a HART multiplexer on an ISA100 gateway to allow end users wireless access to plant assets

• First to implement HART 6 in pressure and temperature transmitters

Effective and Reliable Asset Management Honeywell has integrated HART technology into our asset management solutions to provide customers with ultimate flexibility. We offer a handheld communicator that supports both HART and Honeywell DE protocol, so end-users can use just one device for managing transmitters and their upgrade or replacement strategy.

In addition, Honeywell’s centralized instrument asset management system, Field Device Manager (FDM), supports remote configuration and maintenance of smart field devices based on HART 5, HART 6 and HART 7 protocols. The first in the industry to support the Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) standard and Device Type Manager (DTM) drivers used by field device vendors without using any conversion tools or add-on devices, it is built from the ground up to conform to industry open standards.

To extend that, we also offer FDM Express as a laptop-based application that offers maintenance shops and small to mid-size facilities the opportunity to take advantage of HART diagnostic capabilities and managing HART assets at an economical price point.

To further lower the total cost of ownership, Honeywell has always offered free and simple access to application upgrades and all HART DD and DTM downloads from our website. In addition, Honeywell MC Toolkit users can upgrade any HART DD files free of change, with no annual license fees.

Advanced Diagnostics Honeywell offers end users the ability to monitor and quantify the stress level on a pressure transmitter meter body as well as the transmitter’s electronics. Now for the first time, reliability engineers and maintenance personnel can have real data available through Honeywell’s unique HART ability to do true predictive failure analysis and end of life planning in extreme environmental conditions.

This information can help a facility better understand why some transmitter loops fail more often than others. Honeywell HART advance diagnostics can measure low loop voltage and even report how many times a transmitter loop has lost power completely.

Unique Solutions - From the Field to the Control Room Honeywell implements HART technology from the field to the control room. With HART sensing technology in our differential pressure (DP) transmitters, we can not only measure and report DP but we also provide static pressure. No other transmitter manufacturer of a standalone DP transmitter can do this. This is available over the protocol, so it’s available data with the handheld, on the transmitter display, or through a host system. This helps employees stay safe, avoiding work on transmitters with unsafe pressure.

Experion PKS, too, through HART-enabled I/O modules, supports the impactive use of HART digital data for control, display, diagnostics, parameterization and asset management with no additional configuration. Plant operators and maintenance personnel have full access to all field device information directly

through Experion. Users don’t need to do any special device testing for interoperability. All HART devices are plug-and-play, connected through the asset management system.
