HONG KONG HOSTS THE WORLDby Alan Carasso
HONG KONG -- The Hong Kong Jockey Club
likes to bill the Longines Hong Kong
International Races as the >turf world
championships.= And who=s to argue, really?
While its combined purse money of HK$83
million (about US$10.7 million) for the Hong
Kong Cup (HK$25 million, 2000m), Mile
(HK$23 million), Sprint (HK$18.5 million,
1200m) and Vase (HK$16.5 million, 2400m)
falls short of the money on offer for the turf
events on the Dubai World Cup undercard,
The Championships and the Melbourne Spring
Carnival, for example, it manages--year in and
year out--to attract runners of the highest
quality from all corners of the globe.
Given its proximity to Hong Kong, it is not surprising that
support of the HKIR from Japan has been strong over the last
several years, but fully one of every four runners
entered across the four events this year hails from
the island nation. A repeat of 2001, when
Japanese gallopers won all the races bar the
Sprint, is not out of the realm of possibility this
weekend. The lure of the HKIR is such that eight
other jurisdictions will be represented Sunday,
including entrants from the United States, Ireland,
England, France, Australia, New Zealand, the host
nation and even the rare runner from Singapore.
In an HKIR first, all four defending champions are
back in search of a repeat, though in the case of
2015 Mile hero Maurice (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}),
he will be trying to join Jim and Tonic (Fr) as the
only horses to win two separate events at the
international races. Cont. p2

Hong Kong Welcomes the World cont.
The 5-year-old, having his last career start, will lead the market
for the Cup. And although Ireland=s Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) will be a warm favorite to join Luso (GB) and Doctor Dino
(Fr) as back-to-back winners of the Vase, neither the locally
based Peniaphobia (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) nor Japan=s A Shin
Hikari (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) will be the choice of the betting
public in the Sprint and Cup, respectively. Our HKIR preview
takes a look at the contenders, the pretenders and the best
rough chances, with a handful of video past performance to help
acquaint yourselves with some of the top horses. Let=s dig in:
LONGINES HONG KONG CUP
Purse: HK$25 million (,2,558,364/i3,034,967/A$4,315,690/
US$3,222,201)
Distance: 2000 metres (turf)
2015 champion: A Shin Hikari (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})
CONTENDERS: Any discussion of the day=s richest event begins
with the Japanese, who account for five of the field=s 12
runners. Horse of the Year Maurice (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn})
bids farewell to the races following the Cup, a career which has
seen him win eight of his 15 trips to the post for earnings north
of -536 million, some
50 times more than
the -10.5 million he
brought as a 2-year-old
in training in 2013. A
beautifully built bay,
Maurice was a perfect
six-from-six in 2015,
including his
convincing victory in
the Mile, and took his
streak to seven in the G1 Champions Mile back at Sha Tin this
past May. Runner-up to Logotype (Jpn) (Lohengrin {Jpn}) in the
G1 Yasuda Kinen and to Neorealism (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}) in
the G2 Sapporo Kinen, he bounced back to account for G1 Dubai
Turf hero Real Steel (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Staphanos
(Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) at
Toyko at the end of October. Though the majority of Maurice=s
big-race wins have come at the mile, jockey Ryan Moore has no
doubts that his horse runs the 2000m strong.
AI think that 2000m at Tokyo is far more challenging than the
course in the Hong Kong Cup, it will not be an issue,@ Moore
commented. And after riding the Maurice in his final fast work,
Moore shouted to the Japanese media, AHe is a very happy
horse!@
In the Tenno Sho, Maurice raced reasonably handy to the pace
while a bit deep, and Moore is likely to have him close enough
Sunday, in an attempt to prevent A Shin Hikari (Jpn) (Deep
Impact {Jpn}) from a title defense. So brillant beneath Yutaka
Take 12 months ago, the steel gray added the G1 Prix d=Ispahan
in France, but disappointed in two tries thereafter, including a
pacesetting 12th in the Tenno Sho after coming unglued in the
preliminaries. Drawn gate one, the sometimes obstreperous
horse is the controlling speed, could prove hard to catch if gifted
a soft lead and may offer pari-mutuel value relative to his
chances. That is, if the good A Shin Hikari makes an appearance.
The veteran Hong Kong galloper Blazing Speed (GB) (Dylan
Thomas {Ire}) ran on nicely to be third to A Shin Hikari last term
and resumed this year with a gritty second in the G2 Sha Tin
Trophy H. (1600m) to 2014 Cup hero Designs on Rome (Ire)
(Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who looped the field on the turn
and stayed on well for the win. Neither fired their best shot in
the G2 Jockey Club Cup Nov. 20, but each has a history of
bouncing back with big runs following a subpar effort:
THE ROUGHIE: Secret Weapon (GB) (Choisir {Aus}) could be
your horse. No better than 11th to Maurice in the Champions
Mile, the 6-year-old closed off well to be fourth to perfect-trip
Horse of Fortune (SAf) (Stronghold {GB}) in the G3 Sa Sa Ladies=
Purse H. Nov. 6 before bursting through late to take out the
Jockey Club Cup last time. Zac Purton replaces the suspended
Nash Rawiller in the irons.
The Picks: A Shin Hikari, Maurice, Blazing Speed.

LONGINES HONG KONG MILE
Purse: HK$23 million (,2,354,133/i2,792,351/A$3,968,841/
US$2,964,599)
Distance: 1600 metres (turf)
2015 champion: Maurice (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn})
CONTENDERS: Even though Maurice has opted for the Cup over
a title defence in the Mile, the race is not lacking for intrigue.
Able Friend (Aus) (Shamardal) goes second-up in the Mile, a
race he won with condescending ease two years ago, and
connections are optimistic that he has come on enough since his
fourth-place effort behind stablemate Not Listenin=tome (Aus)
(Dylan Thomas {Ire}) in the G2 Jockey Club Sprint over an
insufficient 1200 metres Nov. 20. His recent barrier trial (video)
and Thursday gallop down the straight would seem to suggest
he has found the necessary improvement, but his chances took
something of a hit when drawing the widest gate in the field of
14 Thursday morning. It will be up to Joao Moreira to work out a
trip, though trainer John Moore is approaching the race with a
fair bit of trepidation.
AAble Friend=s draw is a grave concern for the simple reason
that he=s going into the race not 100%, in the sense that he
missed an intended run going in, so he=s had just the one run
leading into this race,@ the conditioner commented. AI was
hoping for a middle gate and that he could get some nice cover.
From gate 14 he=s going to come back to the rear of the field
and his task is going to be set; with respect to getting home in a
very slick sectional time. His fitness is suspect. I=m worried.@
Beauty Only (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), eighth in last
year=s Cup, has settled in as a reliable horse over 1400m to
1600m and brings career-best form into the Mile. The 5-year-old
turned in a wicked final section of :21.83 to finish third, beaten a
half-length, in the Sha Tin Trophy H. Oct. 23, but got his revenge
last time when scraping home a short head to the good of 96-1
Romantic Touch (Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}) in the Jockey
Club Mile.
Helene Paragon (Fr) (Polan {Fr}), second in the Sa Sa Ladies=
Purse, made a strong run into the final furlong of the Jockey
Club Mile, but was hampered badly and fell back to finish
seventh, just two lengths behind Beauty Only. A clean run gives
him a better shot in the Mile.
IS HE FOR >REAL=? Neorealism (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}) carries
progressive form into the Mile. Toiling in the lower grades this
time last year, the flashy chestnut belied odds of 16-1 to defeat
Maurice in a wet-track renewal of the G2 Sapporo Kinen
(2000m) Aug. 21. A 13-1 chance in the oft-productive G1 Mile
Championship at Kyoto Nov. 20, he drew alongside front-
running Mikki Isle (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) inside the furlong
and looked to have every chance from there, but was bothered
some by the eventual winner in a dicey finish. Ryan Moore, in
the saddle on that occasion, retains the mount.
THE ROUGHIE: With question marks surrounding Able Friend,
Satono Aladdin (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) looks a viable
alternative, albeit at mid- to high single-digit odds. Fourth to
front-running Logotype (Jpn) (Lohengrin {Jpn}) in the Yasuda
Kinen, he ran on strongly to scoop the G2 Swan S. Oct. 29 and
arguably took the
worst of the final-
furlong traffic in the
Mile Championship.
The bay has made an
outstanding impression
in the flesh this week
and can cause a mild
upset here with a clean
trip. AHe is keen, as he
is by Deep Impact,
however this is his second trip to Hong Kong and so he is more
relaxed than last year, and he is in good condition,@ Satono
Aladdin=s trainer Yasutoshi Ikee said. The conditioner=s father,
Yasuo, won the 2001 Vase with Stay Gold (Jpn).
The Picks: Satono Aladdin, Helene Paragon, Able Friend.

LONGINES HONG KONG SPRINT
Purse: HK$18,500,000 (,1,895,025/i2,260,450/A$3,193,093/
US$2,384,386)
Distance: 1200 metres (turf)
2015 champion: Peniaphobia (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire})
CONTENDERS: Hong Kong runners have more or less dominated
the Sprint for the past 15 years, and that trend has an excellent
chance of perpetuating with the progressive Lucky Bubbles
(Aus) (Sebring {Aus}).
Well in the market
when just touched off
by Chautauqua (Aus)
(Encosta de Lago
{Aus}) in the G1
Chairman=s Sprint Prize
last May, the pint-sized
chestnut validated 2-1
favoritism when
outfinishing Amazing
Kids (NZ) (Falkirk {NZ}) in the G2 Premier Bowl H. when first-up Oct. 23, but was most recently handed a half-length defeat in the Nov. 20 G2 JC
Sprint to reopposing Not Listenin=tome (Aus) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}). Lucky Bubbles does look the best of the locals, a group that also includes 2014 winner Aerovelocity (NZ) (Pins {Aus}) and defending champ Peniaphobia (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}).
Amazing Kids defeated Lucky Bubbles when top-weighted in a
Class 2 over the 1200m last season and has held his own in
group company this term. He had a poor start, but a fast finish
when just beaten to the wire in the Premier Bowl, but that race
might have taken the starch out of him just a bit, as he lacked a
rally when fifth last time in the Jockey Club Sprint. A contested
pace and a return to his best could see him knocking on the door
here at a decent price.
Japan achieved a first victory in this race when Lord Kanaloa
(Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) proved far too classy in 2012 and
2013, and the country relies on two runners in the Sprint. Big
Arthur (Jpn) (Sakura Bakushin O {Jpn}) is clearly the more
talented of the duo, with eight wins from 13 tries, most notably
the G1 Takamtsunomiya Kinen (1200m) in March in which he
stopped the timer in a spectacular 1:06.70. The strapping bay
entire resumed off five-month absence to take the G2 Centaur
S. by 3/4 of a length Sept. 11, but found a world of trouble and
nowhere to go last time in the G1 Sprinters= S Oct. 2. Though he
finished 12th, he was beaten a little more than two lengths,
while Red Falx (Jpn) (Swept Overboard) endured a wide trip, but
a clear one, and raced over the top of rivals to score.
At better than 1360 pounds, Takedown (Aus) (Stratum {Aus})
is one of the more imposing physicals you=d ever set your eyes
on, but he=s got athleticism and a surprising amount of speed to
boot. Trained by
former local
champion jockey
Gary Moore, the
brother of local
legend John Moore,
the 4-year-old has
won seven from 20,
including his last-
start upset of the
G1 Winterbottom S.
in Perth just a
fortnight back. Moore is not lacking for confidence.
AI expect him to win on Sunday and show everyone that our
stable are serious players,@ he boldly proclaimed at Thursday
morning trackwork. AIf he does, then it will be right up there as
one of the great moments of my career.@
PURE SENSATION STILL AILING: Patricia Generazio=s Pure
Sensation (Zensational), the lone American runner entered for
the HKIR, remains under an injury cloud. After breezing three
furlongs in :37 earlier this week, he developed an abscess in his
left hind that precluded him from training Thursday. He was
supposed to return to the track Friday, but remained in the
quarantine stable and is now reported by the Hong Kong Jockey
Club to be lame in his left fore. He was to be inspected by HKJC
vets Saturday morning, with a determination on his suitability to
race to follow. Winner of this year=s GIII Jaipur S. at Belmont
Park, Pure Sensation exits a third-place effort in the GI Breeders=
Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Nov. 5.
PREBBLE MORE THAN LUCKY IN SPRINT: Jockey Brett Prebble
will partner with Lucky Bubbles as his looks for a remarkable
fourth win in the Sprint. The Australian rode Absolute Champion
(Aus) (Marauding {NZ}) to win the 2006 Sprint, followed up with
Sacred Kingdom (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) in 2009 and most
recently teamed with Lucky Nine (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) to take out
the 2011 renewal.
THE ROUGHIES: Strathmore (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was third
to Lucky Bubbles in Class 1 company last March, then outran
board odds of 99-1 to round out the triple in the Chairman=s
Sprint Prize to close the season. He=s had just one run back this
term, an even sixth in the Jockey Club Sprint, and can flavor up
the vertical wagers if able to improve by a few lengths for that
return effort. Cont. p5

Off his best Euro form, Growl (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) could
be given a place chance. The Ayr Gold Cup runner-up, the bay
was beaten a length into second in the G1 British Champions
Sprint Oct. 15 and was most recently the narrow winner of the
Listed Wentworth S. at Doncaster Nov. 5. Trainer Richard Fahey
once called the shots on the European career of Peniaphobia.
The Picks: Amazing Kids, Lucky Bubbles, Big Arthur.
LONGINES HONG KONG VASE
Purse: HK$16,500,000 (,1,895,025/i2,260,450/A$3,193,093/
US$2,384,386)
Distance: 2400m (turf)
2015 champion: Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
CONTENDERS: The Vase goes through Highland Reel, plain and
simple, and it is difficult to present a case against the horse that
will be the day=s
banker for most
gamblers. The 4-year-
old=s resume speaks
for itself, as he=ll be
looking to add to a
season which has
already seen him post
victories in two of the
world=s most
prestigious events over
a mile and a half: the
G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond S. over the
summer and a defeat of favored Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB})
under a brilliant Seamie Heffernan ride in the GI Breeders= Cup
Turf in his last start Nov. 5. He was also second to his stablemate
Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe and
to Postponed (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1 Juddmonte
International S. (2000m). One of Highland Reel=s biggest fans is
his trainer.
AHighland Reel is a very good colt, we know that,@ Aidan
O=Brien told the HKJC press team. AHe has tactical speed, he
stays, and has everything you could want really. He=s been a
good traveller from early on in his career, he relaxes, he=s
adaptable, he doesn=t overthink situations.@ O=Brien arrives in
Hong Kong Saturday.
It is Highland Reel=s versatility that makes him double tough, as
he can lead or sit back a bit, and that could stand him in good
stead in this field. Big Orange (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire})
has turned in powerful staying efforts this year when winning
the G2 Goodwood Cup (3200m) under 134 pounds for the
second year running following a close second in the G2 Dubai
Gold Cup earlier in the season over the same trip. He was most
recently third after setting the pace in the G2 Zipping Classic at
Sandown in Australia. Big Orange does not absolutely need two
miles, as he also annexed the G2 Princess of Wales=s at Sunday=s
distance, and he likes to gallop them along up front, then
outstay them. He has had enough speed to lead, but whether he
can see off Highland Reel remains to be determined.
Silverwave (Fr) (Silver Frost {Ire}) has been one of the more
impressive horses on
track this week in
Hong Kong and has
some performances
over the summer that
would make him
competitive here. His
victory in the G1 Grand
Prix de Saint-Cloud
came at the expense of
future GI Canadian
International hero
Erupt (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was ticketed for this race before
a subpar effort in the G1 Japan Cup derailed those plans. Also
victorious in the G2 Prix Foy, he was a puzzling 13th in the Arc,
and while he may not be quite good enough to beat Highland
Reel here, one of his better efforts likely lands him a nice check.
Despite heavy work, particularly in the latter half of the season, Nuovo Record (Jpn) (Heart=s Cry {Jpn}) returns to the scene of her runner-up effort in last year=s Cup, but takes in the Vase this year. A never-in-it 11th in the GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Turf Nov. 5, she remained stateside and parlayed a perfect trip into a narrow success in the GIII Red Carpet H. Nov. 24. Though she=s since had to endure another trans-oceanic flight, she has looked fantastic in her trackwork and it would be no surprise to see her run another good one.
