Clarken’s racing manager Lachie

Weekley and owner and breeder, Queenslander Andrew Grant-Taylor who

raced Group 1 winner Invincibella (I Am Invincible) among others, is also

among those to own a piece of the well-travelled mare who had stints in

various stables before finding her way to Adelaide.

It was Goolwa trainer Jolly, who enjoyed the ultimate success in the

Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

earlier this month with Behemoth (All Too Hard), who first identified

Bella Vella when she came up for sale on an April 2019 Inglis Digital sale.

She was purchased by the syndicate for $22,500 and, understatedly,

Kelton said yesterday Bella Vella had gone on to exceed their wildest

expectations.

“David Jolly originally picked her out as a candidate to buy and

between Will Clarken and myself we do a fair bit of work trying to identify

tried horses to purchase... and we have purchased a number of other ones

before,” Kelton told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Bella Vella’s obviously been the best one, but we have a methodology

in how we do it when we look through their form. We try to identify horses

with upside or fillies and mares with a pedigree who have possible upside

that we think can improve their race performance.

“Will’s got another guy, Lachie Weekley, his racing manager, who also

has some input when we’re looking at the tried horses.

“When we first got Bella Vella and we started her off, we thought, ‘can

we get a city win in SA for her?’ and then for the next year or so we were

trying to get some black type for

her and she’s kept raising the bar

which has been fantastic.”

Adelaide punter Kelton,

along with Weekley, plays a

key role in the rising success of

Clarken’s Morphettville stable

by assisting in the placement of

horses and the suggested riding

tactics in a race.

“Will doesn’t profess to be

a form analyst himself. He is a

genius at looking at the horses

each day and working out their

work schedules and targeting

particular races,” he said.

“He is very good at patching

up horses who have issues and

trying to work out and making

sure the horses are feeling well and over whatever injury concerns they

might have and (Weekley and I) are about trying to place them correctly

and get them through as many grades as we can.”

Bella Vella, a first-up winner of the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m)

at The Valley, is considered a $6 chance by bookmakers behind Perth

sprinter Fabergino (Maschino), the $4 favourite.

Clarken yesterday publicly aired his concerns about Bella Vella drawing

the inside barrier for the Moir and Kelton agreed. www.magicmillions.com.au

“I think there’s a couple in the race

that will probably cross her. She will be hard-pressed holding Pippie out

and the Perth mare has a lot of speed as well,” he said.

“So, we’re going to need a little bit of luck at some stage, but if they run

along and string out a bit, that will probably help her.

“The other thing is, if there’s a fair bit of rain about during the day,

when Moonee Valley has the rail in the normal position as it does, the

inside will often be inferior going.

“I would have loved to see her draw five or six, but anyway, we’re in

the race and we’ve got to make do with what we’ve got. It’s quite an even

race and there’s a lot of horses who I think are evenly matched in the field,

so I’d be expecting a pretty bunched finish.”

A return to The Valley for the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on

October 23 is also on the cards for Bella Vella after the Moir.

Regardless of what she achieves on the track before she is retired,

Kelton suggested she would be put on the market as a broodmare prospect

even though there are breeders in the syndicate.

“The model we’ve had when we’ve had these good mares is to sell

them at auction as people like myself, Will and David Jolly are in the

horse,” he said.

“If we can build up their value and then sell it commercially, that’s a

better model for us than being a breeder.”

Tomorrow, Kelton, who also raced the former Jake Stephens-trained

Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner and Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)

runner-up Alcopop (Jeune), again combines with Clarken, Rushton Park

as well as Willaroon’s Sally Watkins in another tried horse purchase, the

Zoustar (Northern Meteor) mare Be My Star.

Bought for $70,000 in May last year, Be My Star runs in a Benchmark

90 (1100m) mares race at Caulfield.

Kelton said: “She was bought from Magic Millions on the Gold Coast

as a tried mare and we’re trying to increase her value and build up her

race form which we’ve been able to do so far. The next step for her this

prep is to hopefully get her some black type.”

Bowman wins Farnan appeal

Hugh Bowman will be able to continue riding

throughout the Sydney spring after he was

yesterday successful in his appeal against the

20-day ban he received for his ride on Farnan

(Not A Single Doubt) in The Run To The Rose

(Gr 2, 1200m). Following a lengthy hearing,

the Racing NSW Appeals Panel overturned

the stewards' original decision which leaves

the jockey free to ride in four Group 1 races,

including the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m)

at Randwick on October 3. Bowman was

originally suspended for almost three weeks

by the stewards, who charged him over his

handling of Farnan in three stages of the race.

The majority of the panel agreed Bowman

made an error of judgement in the early stages

of The Run To The Rose but did not find his

effort blameworthy. The panel threw out the

stewards' second charge, that Bowman did not

do enough to restrain Farnan between the 900

metres and 400 metres. The final charge related

to Bowman continuing to push out the colt

around the home turn when the stewards felt he

should have conserved the horse's energy. The

panel found the jockey's decision to continue

riding Farnan along at that point was wrong,

but was not worthy of a suspension. Bowman

has six rides at Rosehill tomorrow where he

partners King's Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) in

his quest for back-to-back wins in the Golden

Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), having won the $1

million contest on Bivouac (Exceed And Excel)

Away Game scratched from MoirA week ago Ciaron Maher and David Eustace

appeared to have a stranglehold on tonight’s A J

Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) but now the training

partnership is without a runner. The stable

yesterday announced that three-year-old Away

Game (Snitzel) would not contest The Valley

sprint due to an elevated temperature. Anders

(Not A Single Doubt), the pre-post favourite,

was ruled out of the race on Sunday after also

suffering an elevated temperature. “This is very

disappointing for her owners in Aquis and the

Mathiesen family, as well as her fans who were

all eagerly awaiting the return of the ‘iron filly’,”

a statement from Maher said. “With it only

being a minor setback, we will focus on getting

her right for other targets this spring.”

Trekking in Everest auditionJames Cummings is hoping dual Group

1-winning sprinter Trekking (Street Cry) can

prove he's on track for another tilt at The Everest

(1200m) but he wants to see him run well in the

Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) before committing

to that race. Trekking is part of a two-pronged

attack Godolphin will take into tonight’s race

at Moonee Valley, along with the Anthony and

Sam Freedman-trained Hanseatic (Street Boss).

Cummings said he wanted to see how Trekking

performed before talking seriously about The

Everest, a race the horse finished third in last

year. "There are still spots remaining and there

aren't many sprinters around with the record

he has," Cummings said. Last year Trekking

also ran first-up in the Moir Stakes and finished

eighth behind Nature Strip (Nicconi) but was

beaten less than two lengths after charging

home from well back. Cummings said he felt

the sprinter was going better than 12 months

ago and predicted another good campaign.

"I don't think he's finished building on his

already formidable record. He's enjoyed a light

preliminary, so he's very fresh for the 1000

metres," he added.

Baker aiming for fifth UnderwoodMurray Baker will attempt to add to his tally

of four wins in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1,

1800m) when The Chosen One (Savabeel) takes

his chance at Caulfield tomorrow. The five-year-

old has won six of his 23 starts – four of those in

stakes company – but he has yet to win at weight-

for-age level. However, Baker said he was a much

stronger horse now than he was 12 months ago

when he finished ninth in the corresponding

race, lining up tomorrow off the back of a win

over 1700 metres at Flemington on his recent

return to action. “It was a sharp run first up, I

thought. He won well and he ran a fast last 600,”

said Baker, who trains in partnership with Andrew

Forsman. “He’s trained on well but we know this

is a big step up. We haven’t done a lot with him

since the win the other day. We’ve kept him fresh

but we’re happy with him. We expect him to be

running on. It will be interesting to see how he

measures up to that Group 1 weight-for-age class

in Melbourne. He’s improved from four to five

but the Underwood is always a very tough race,”

Baker added

‘Fresh is best for Mr Quickie’Phillip Stokes is

hoping his fresh

is best approach

with Mr Quickie

(Shamus Award)

can pay dividends

when his stable

star lines up in the

Underwood Stakes.

The five-year-old

has not raced since

he resumed with a second to subsequent Sir

Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner

Behemoth (All Too Hard) in last month’s

Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). Stokes has

decided to space Mr Quickie's runs by three

to four weeks this spring as he believes that's

when the horse produces his best. "His first

up run was really good. He's in good order

and he's probably improved a bit," Stokes

said. "Taking on Russian Camelot and those

sort of horses, it's going to be a good test but

if he gets the right run he'll be in the finish."

Stokes added the key to Mr Quickie's chances

would be whether there was speed in the

race as if there was not enough, it would be

difficult for the backmarker to make ground.

Mr Quickie will be ridden by Damian Lane for

the first time.

Guineas Prelude for Flying AwardListed winner Flying Award (Shamus Award)

looks set to take his chance in tomorrow’s

Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m).

The colt held an alternative engagement in

today’s Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) but trainer

Danny O’Brien last night scratched him from

the Moonee Valley race. Last season’s Anzac

Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) winner, who made

a highly encouraging return to action when

narrowly missing out in second place behind

Immortal Love (Snitzel) in last month’s McNeill

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), will jump from barrier ten

under Damian Oliver.

Coolmore goal for Swats ThatSwats That (Shamus Award) will contest

tonight's Scarborough Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)

as connections ready the filly for a tilt at

the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at

Flemington on October 31. "We want to keep

her to a sprint trip this time around, so the final

goal will be the Coolmore," Troy Corstens, who

trains in partnership with his father Leon, told

Racing.com. "She's naturally quite talented and

very sharp, so I think that it will be good to get

another dimension to her at Moonee Valley on

Friday night. We will probably have another

run in between then and the Coolmore, but

we will just see how she goes on Friday night

first." Swats That will jump from barrier nine

under John Allen and Corstens continued:

"It gives him a few options. It's probably not a

bad thing for her. We don't really want to get

her too cluttered up, so I'll leave the riding up

to Johnny, but you'd think she'd be a couple of

pairs back and maybe three wide with cover."

I Am Superman flying for ShannonPeter and Paul Snowden have Group

1 ambitions for I Am Superman

(Footstepsinthesand) this spring, although

the first of them has gone by the wayside.

The Snowdens had hoped to run the import

in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield

last Saturday but he failed to gain a start

after being made an emergency. They upped

stumps and sent the sprinter-miler back to

Sydney, via a mandatory two-day period

quarantining at a farm, and he will line up in

the Shannon Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill

tomorrow. "We missed out on getting a run

in the Rupert Clarke so we brought him

home," Peter Snowden said. "He just needed

a run. It was three weeks from when he won

that handicap (at Caulfield) to the Rupert

Clarke and he missed out there, so he'll be a

month without a run. That's why he's up here

Saturday." Dalmacia (Sir Tristram) in 1982

is the last horse to win the Shannon Stakes-

Epsom Handicap double, and Snowden said

I Am Superman is unlikely to back up in the

Group 1 Randwick mile. "I'd be more inclined

to look at a Toorak afterwards, and the mile

of the old Emirates in Melbourne. I wouldn't

rule it out but it's not on the radar at the

moment for him to run in the Epsom.

Toowoomba trackto suit BandipurKelly Purdy is banking on the tough

Toowoomba terrain and a fast tempo to

enable Bandipur (Commands) to claim

another feature race win in tomorrow’s

Weetwood Handicap (Listed, 1200m).

"Toowoomba should suit him running up the

hill. He always runs to the line and I just think

if the race is run like it is every other year

he'll be a real show," Purdy said. A former

successful jockey, Purdy enjoyed the biggest

success of her training career when Bandipur

won the Eye Liner Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at

Ipswich in July. The gelding resumed from a

let-up, with Jag Guthmann-Chester aboard,

to finish seventh to The Odyssey (Better Than

Ready) at Doomben on September 12 as his

final hitout before the Weetwood. "The way

it was run the other day it was impossible

for him to win but Jag said his last hundred

was his best and he had trouble pulling him

up," Purdy continued. "His sectionals for the

last three furlongs were unbelievable. He's

broken 33 seconds himself but obviously he

couldn't pick them up around Doomben."

Everest jockey confirmed for Tofane

Tommy Berry's partnership with Chautauqua

(Encosta De Lago) has helped him to secure the

ride on Victorian raider Tofane (Ocean Park)

in the $15 million The Everest. Mike Moroney

confirmed the booking of Berry, citing the

jockey's relationship with Tofane's part-owner

Rupert Legh, who also raced six-time Group 1

winner Chautauqua, as a key factor. Damien

Oliver partnered Tofane to her first-up third

in the Bobbie Lewis Quality (Gr 2, 1200m) at

Flemington but Covid-19 travel restrictions

prompted connections to look for a local rider.

"With the current Covid-19 restrictions in place

we had to look for a Sydney jockey and we've

been fortunate to lock in Tommy Berry," Moroney

said. "He's a proven big race jockey and has won

feature races in Rupert Legh's colours before so

it's a nice fit. The mare has come through her

first-up run at Flemington in good order so with a

jockey in place we can concentrate on getting her

to Sydney in the best possible shape."

Moor to ride AktauDaniel Moor has been booked for the ride on

Aktau (Teofilo) in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)

connections have confirmed. Aktau gained

ballot free exemption for the $5 million contest

on October 17 by winning the Mornington Cup

(Listed, 2400m) back in March before resuming

with a ninth-placed finish when beaten three

and a half lengths in an open handicap over

1700 metres at Flemington on September 12.

“The ownership group is delighted to confirm

Daniel Moor to ride Aktau,” the five-year-old’s

trainer Mike Moroney said yesterday. “He’s a

natural lightweight riding in good form and had

a sit on Aktau for some pacework at Flemington

this morning and they got on well together. We

have the advantage of not having to rush to try to

qualify the horse. He’s taken nice improvement

from his first-up run and it is great to have sorted

his riding arrangements out.”

Turnbull experiment for Fierce ImpactFierce Impact (Deep Impact) will race over

2000 metres for the first time in more than a

year when he has his next start as connections

continue to ready the colt for a tilt at the Cox

Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). "We feel like we have got

the right horse (to run in a Cox Plate). But we

want to see him next start at 2000 metres and

we want to see him hit the line strong," the six-

year-old’s trainer Matthew Smith told Racing.

com. "That's the next hurdle to get over, but as

long as he does that then we'd really like to have

a go. It's such a long time since he's had a go

over 2000 metres and I think we really need to

get one under his belt. So we will go either to

the Turnbull (at Flemington) or the Hill Stakes

here in Sydney, one or the other and from there

hopefully the Cox Plate."

Maiden winner on Derby pathAin’tnodeeldun (Dundeel) emerged as a

genuine contender for next month’s Victoria

Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) when running out an

impressive winner of a Sale maiden over 1615

metres yesterday. The Freedman Racing-

trained colt, who was having his fifth start,

showed marked improvement for the step up in

trip, finishing five lengths in front of the runner

up Perennial (Per Incanto). He will now try to

emulate stablemate Warning (Declaration Of

War) who was beaten in the corresponding

race 12 months ago before going on to Derby

glory. "We brought last year's Derby winner

to this race last year and he couldn't get the

job done, but this guy is on a similar path,"

Freedman Racing's racing manager Brad Taylor

told Racing.com. "He's always been a colt that's

shown us a really good amount of ability and

it's good to see him get the maiden out of the

way. It's a big relief to see them come out and

do that. You've got to keep the work up to him,

so we still think there's plenty of improvement

to come and the way he relaxed there and the

way he hit the line, when he gets up to 2000

metres and hopefully a Derby trip, we'll see the

best of him,” he said.

Barocha sold to Hong KongUnbeaten Victorian gelding Barocha

(Ilovethiscity) has reportedly been sold to a

Hong Kong owner. Crown Park’s Rod Douglas,

who raced the Clayton Douglas-trained four-

year-old, said yesterday that the four-year-old

had been sold to a client of Wattle Bloodstock’s

Peter Twomey. Barocha won by five lengths at

Sale on August 13 in a maiden before backing

that up with a two-and-a-half length victory

at Geelong on September 6. Connections had

previously rejected overtures from agents to sell

the gelding but Douglas yesterday said the offer

was “too significant” not to accept.

Magic Millions Wyong race series announcedWyong is set to launch a three-race Magic Millions

Provincial Series starting on Thursday. The series

will carry a number of incentives for provincial

trainers, including flights and accommodation to

the Magic Millions sale of choice. The provincial

trainer with the overall best score from the three

meetings will be given a $5000 credit to spend at

a Magic Millions sale. Wyong general manager,

Robin Taylor said the series furthers the club’s

association with Magic Millions and supports

provincial trainers. “We have a long-standing

relationship with Magic Millions, through the

2YO Classic and 3YO & 4YO Stakes which we

run annually,” he said. “To further this, we have

introduced the Magic Millions Provincial Series.

We see it as a great way of enticing provincial

trainers to start more horses at Wyong, with some

fantastic prizes on offer.”

Melody Belle confirmed for Windsor Park PlateReigning Horse of the Year Melody Belle

(Commands) will form part of strong looking

three-pronged assault Te Akau Racing are set

to launch on next week’s Windsor Park Plate

(Gr 1, 1600m). The dual winner of the race

will be joined by Group 2 winner Prise De Fer

(Savabeel), who will be ridden by Opie Bosson,

and Avantage (Fastnet Rock), who will again be

partnered by Dee Johnson following the pair’s

third place finish in the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1,

1400m). Troy Harris will ride Melody Belle for

just the second time, having been on board

the filly when she took out last year’s Waikato

Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m).

Cole out to snap exasperating secondsAfter a series of runner-up finishes over the last

week, Cody Cole is hoping to go one better at

both Ellerslie and New Plymouth tomorrow.

Cole saddled Extortion (Casino Prince) for

a runner-up finish at Te Rapa last Thursday,

then picked up another two second placings

with Craftyeva (Mastercraftsman) and Cadeau

(Zacinto), his two runners at Matamata on

Wednesday. “We’ve had three seconds in a row

now, so hopefully we can pick up a win soon,”

Cole said. “But I really don’t mind those horses

running second fresh-up. I think we’ve got a bit

to look forward to with them. The three-year-

old filly who ran at Matamata (Cadeau) is one

I think has a particularly bright future ahead

of her.” Cole will have runners at both venues

on Saturday, including the stylish last-start

winners Nancy Spain (Charm Spirit) and Sweet

Molly Malone (Rip Van Winkle) at Ellerslie. “I

think they’re both mares with a bit of upside,”

Cole said. “We pulled Nancy Spain out of the

special conditions maiden at Hastings last

week because she hasn’t been the soundest and

the track was a bit too firm there. We’ll make

sure everything’s 100 per cent with her before

committing to starting her this weekend.”

Aigne aiming to secure Jericho spotThe road towards the Jericho Cup (4600m) at

Warrnambool on November 29 will begin at

New Plymouth tomorrow for the victor of the

qualifying race of the same name. The NZB

Airfreight-sponsored 3210-metre race was

taken out by Aigne (Sufficient) last year and

owner Neil O’Dowd is hoping he can replicate

the result in this year’s edition. The son of

Sufficient has been in a purple patch of form

of late, winning his last three races, including

the Parliamentary Handicap (2100m) and

Awapuni Hurdles (2900m). O’Dowd has been

pleased with the way Aigne has been going for

trainer Kevin Myers and he is looking forward

to watching his pride and joy go around this

weekend. “He is going pretty well,” O’Dowd

said. “I would have liked him to have run at

Hawke’s Bay, but Kevin and I talked about it

and the ground was too hard. We asked the

leprechauns for rain at New Plymouth and

we have got it, so hopefully that plays into our

hands. You are always apprehensive because

there are a lot of good horses in there that you

have got to beat. He has had five weeks between

runs so he should be as fresh as a daisy.”

Perfect start for BonhamThe Little Avondale Stud-bred Bonham (Per

Incanto), a filly who traces back to top filly

Danendri (Danehill), stamped herself as a

horse of promise at Woodville yesterday with

an easy three-length win on debut. The Johno

Benner and Hollie Wynyard-prepared Bonham

had indicated her talent in a trial at Foxton and

she lived up to her billing in the 1100-metre

contest yesterday. “She has always shown

exceptional ability, but she just lacked a little bit

of ringcraft, that was the only concern against

some seasoned older horses, but she definitely

overcame that,” Benner said. “She has been very

lightly tried. She has only had one jumpout and

one trial, so it was a very good effort. She has

black-type ability and she holds a nomination

for the New Zealand 1000 Guineas, but it is

day by day at the moment. We will see how she

comes through the run and we won’t get too far

ahead of ourselves.”

Birthday gift for nonagenarian MarriottBrian Marriott may have just turned 91 years

old, having celebrated his birthday on Tuesday,

but he was delighted with a belated celebration

when his sole runner Bellissimo (Showcasing)

won the Kem Keene Memorial (1400m) at

Woodville yesterday by almost five lengths. “It

was a really nice win, the jockey (Maria Sanson)

did a great job,” Marriott said of the eight-year-

old mare. “I was pretty confident today and I

said to Maria I don’t think she will be too far

away.” Marriott holds the mantle as the oldest

licensed trainer in New Zealand, but he has no

intention of stopping anytime soon. “I am still

as fit as a fiddle,” he said. “I work her at Opaki

in the mornings, I only do five days a week and

I give her the weekend off.”

Korea: Triple Nine retiredThe most successful Korean thoroughbred of all

been retired. A winner of 15 of his 37 starts,

including five Korean Group 1 contests, Triple

Nine banked 4.7 billion won (approx AUD$5.69

million) through his six-year career. Among the

victories for the Kim Young Kwan trainee were

four President’s Cups (Listed, 2000m), the

richest open-age race restricted to Korean-bred

horses, while he led the home defence of the

Korea Cup (1800m) in the first two years it was

open to overseas visitors, finishing third and

fourth in 2017 and 2018 respectively. He was

also a trailblazer in many respects, embarking

on a Dubai campaign in 2017 that saw him

finish fifth in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round

3 (Gr 1, 2000m), finishing ahead of UAE Derby

(Gr 2, 1900m) winner Lani (Tapit) and

Godolphin Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) victor Second

Summer (Summer Bird). "Triple Nine has had a

26 for Pride Of Dubai

Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) sired his 26th

individual winner when Flying Visit (2 c ex

Fionnuar by Teofilo) ran out a convincing

winner of a maiden over a mile at a soggy

Listowel yesterday. The Jim Bolger-trained

juvenile, who was racing for the sixth time,

finished six lengths in front of runner-up Dha

Leath (Mehmas), with Cold Steel (Summer

Front) another length and a half away in third.

Pride Of Dubai stands for $38,500 at Coolmore

Australia in 2020.

First for DunadenMelbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner

Dunaden (Nicobar) sired his first stakes

winner when Ranch Hand (4 g ex Victoria

Montoya by High Chaparral) registered a

surprise success in yesterday’s Rose Bowl

Stakes (Listed, 2m) at Newmarket. Sent off

the 15-2 outsider in the four-runner field, the

Andrew Balding-trained four-year-old kept

on well to defeat Withhold (Champs Elysees)

by half a length. Ghostwatch (Dubawi) was

another length and three-quarters away in

third, while favourite Mildenberger (Teofilo)

trailed in last. Yesterday’s victory was a

fourth in 12 starts for the homebred Ranch

Hand, whose dam Victoria Montoya (High

Chaparral) is a Listed-placed winning half

sister to Group 2 winner Passing Glance

(Polar Falcon) and Hidden Meadow (Selkirk),

a winner at Group 3 level. Dunaden, who

took out the Melbourne Cup in 2011 and also

landed the following year’s Caulfield Cup (Gr

1, 2400m), died last year at the age of 13 due to

complications following a paddock accident

at his home at Overbury Stud. He has so far

sired a total of nine individual winners from

30 runners.

75 for Lope De VegaBallylinch Stud’s Lope de Vega (Shamardal)

sired his 75th individual stakes winner when

La Barrosa (2 c ex Bikini Babe by Montjeu)

retained his unbeaten record with a victory

in yesterday’s Somerville Tattersall Stakes

(Gr 3, 7f ) at Newmarket. Trained by Charlie

Appleby for Godolphin, the juvenile followed

up his debut success at Ascot earlier in the

month with a length win over Dark Lion (Dark

Angel) as the 4-7 favourite. Qaader (Night Of

Thunder) was a further three-quarters of a

length away in third. La Barrosa is a graduate

of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling

Sale, having been purchased at Park Paddocks

last year for 750,000gns. Lope de Vega stood

for €100,000 (approx. AUD$165,725) in 2020.

38 for SiyouniHaras de Bonneval resident Siyouni (Pivotal)

sired his 38th individual stakes winner when

Darkness (2 c ex Kerila by Makfi) came out on

top in a tight finish to yesterday’s Criterium

de Lyon (Listed, 1600m) at Lyon Parilly. The

Jean-Claude Rouget-trained juvenile was

winning for the third time in five starts when

beating Euphoria (Sepoy) and Colosseo

(Street Boss) by a short neck and a neck.

Siyouni stood for a fee of €100,000 (approx.

AUD$165,750) in 2020.

USA: Game Winner retires to Lane’s EndAmerican champion two-year-old colt of

2018, Game Winner (Candy Ride), has been

retired and will stand at Lane’s End Farms

as of next year. Game Winner was unbeaten

as a two-year-old, including three Grade 1

wins in the Del Mar Futurity (Gr 1, 7f ), the

American Pharoah Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f ) and

the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f ). At

three, he was runner-up in the Santa Anita

Derby (Gr 1, 9f ) before finishing fifth in

the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f ), ending his

career with a victory in the Los Alamitos

Derby (Gr 3, 9f ). "As a 2-year-old, he was

just phenomenal. He really brought it to

that championship level," his trainer, Hall of

Famer Bob Baffert, said. "To do what he did

really showed that he was the best of the best.

Candy Ride was a brilliant racehorse and he

throws brilliance, and with Game Winner,

the minute he showed that brilliance, I knew

we had something special." A stud fee is yet

to be determined.

BY MEREDITH DAUGHERTY OF BLOODHORSE

The barns and walking rings of the

Keeneland September Yearling

Sale grounds continued to be

well-shopped through the closing

session of Book 5 as 238 horses sold through

the ring to bank gross receipts of $4,664,900

(approx. AUD$6.63 million).

Yearlings sold during Wednesday's session

garnered an average of $19,600 (approx.

AUD$27,850) and median of $12,500 (approx.

AUD$17,750). The 63 horses from the 301

offered that went unsold represented an RNA

rate of 20.9 per cent. Keeneland has reported

2,129 horses sold for receipts of $245,278,700

(approx. AUD$349 million). The 795 unsold

horses represent an overall RNA rate of 27.2 per

cent.

Topping the sale's 10th session was Hip

3391, a colt by Ashford Stud's Cupid (Tapit) out

of the Distorted Humor (Forty Niner) mare Just

Joking. Bred in Kentucky by Don Blow and Jory

Sherman of Ascot Thoroughbreds, the colt was

purchased for $200,000 (approx. AUD$284,300)

by Larry Zap, agent for Mike Mellen.

"He checked all the boxes," Zap said. "It's

a cliche, but he's a big, strong colt by a good

sire. I've seen something in the Cupids and I

wanted a Cupid, so I looked at them all. Honest

to God, I was going to try this horse for less like

everyone else, but when I saw other people

looking at him in the back ring, I had to get my

owner really excited because I knew we weren't

going to steal this one. He had it all—bone, size,

athleticism. He's the kind of horse that takes

you to the big races on Saturday."

Hip 3391 was the most expensive horse

purchased by Zap on behalf of Mellen—who

races as Bran Jam Stable—at the sale so far. In

total, Zap has signed for five yearlings for Mellen

for receipts of $514,000 (approx. AUD$730,500).

"We've bought him quite a few," Zap said.

"We're trying to get back to the big dances. He's

a great guy and he wants to have some fun. This

is the kind of horse that brings fun to the party.

Everybody was looking at him. I've been blown

away on so many colts, so perseverance pays

off."

The celebrations following the sale of Hip

3391 were jubilant at the barn of consignor

Shawhan Place, where breeders Don and

Beth Blowe were elated to see their colt top

Wednesday's session.

"We have the mare and we keep them with

us until they're just about to drop," said Don

Blowe. "Then we take them over to Shawhan

Place and they do a good job of looking after

them from there on in."

"I want to give special credit to Gus Koch

because he's the one that looks after them from

the time they're weanlings until they get to the

sales ring," Beth Blowe said. "We want to wish

his future connections the best of luck with

him, and we want to acknowledge Cupid, too.

We saw him when we initially decided to breed

our mare to him. We liked his top bloodline,

and his size and scope impressed us. That is

what has made this baby so good."

"He's an awesome colt and he just wowed

you when you looked at him," said Courtney

Schneider of Shawhan Place. "He never went

through a weird phase. He did everything the

way he was supposed to, and it worked out

today."

Shawhan Place sold all five yearlings offered

through the ring from their consignment on

Wednesday. Total receipts for the operation

on the day came to $334,000 (approx.

AUD$474,750).

The second-highest-priced yearling on

Wednesday was Hip 3523, a colt by Darby

Dan Farm's Klimt (Quality Road) out of

Spirit of Wailea (Out of Place). Bred in New

York by Allen Hallett, the colt—named Klimt

Eastwood—is a half brother to Grade 1 winner

El Deal (Munnings) and was purchased by

Jesse Hoppel, agent, for $115,000 (approx.

AUD$163,500) from the Vinery Sales

consignment.

"He was just an easy-walking horse,"

said Hoppel, who owns and operates Coastal

Equine. "He's a young horse, so maybe not

everybody has seen him. He's going to grow

into something special."

As pinhookers and consignors, both Matt

Koch of Shawhan Place and Hoppel said the

polarization of the market and the demand for

the "perfect" individual continued to have the

greatest impact on a horse's selling price even

as the sale draws to a close.

"For the horses you like, it seems like all the

same people are there," Hoppel said. "You see

the same faces. It's polarized toward the better

horses, but that is the way that it goes."

"It's a tough year," Koch said. "Everyone is

on the big horse, and everyone else is falling

through the cracks. In this market, if you have

the right horse, you just have to bring it out

there and let the market tell you what it's worth.

You have to get out of the way. It's easy for

the good ones, but for your average horse, it's

always a tough sale."

Caspar Fownes’ red-hot form

continued at Happy Valley on

Wednesday night with the three-

time champion trainer slamming

in a double to extend his early lead at the top of

the premiership.

With six wins at the city circuit from three

meetings, Fownes is living up to his nickname

as the “King of the Valley” and he kicked off his

evening’s tally when Jazz Steed (Exceed And

Excel) and Chad Schofield dead-heated with

the Francis Lui-trained Shining On (O’Reilly)

and Vincent Ho in the Class 4 Repulse Bay

Handicap (1200m).

“I thought Francis had got me right on the

line, so I’m very happy with that result,” Fownes

said. “Last season we had a similar race that

I thought I’d won but lost, this time we dead-

heated – no complaints.”

Jazz Steed, a Hong Kong International

Sale graduate, took his record to two wins

from ten starts with that win, and, with a

current rating of 54, he is just six points shy of

a Class 3 berth.

“We’ll see how he is, he’ll probably only get

four points because it was a close finish and a

dead-heat, so we’ll try to find another race for

him in a few weeks,” Fownes said.

After a disappointing 11th first-up, the

gelding reversed his form with a win, the first of

a double too for Schofield who praised Fownes

for the galloper’s turnaround in form.

“I think the tongue-tie changed him, he’s a

horse who has ability and last start was too bad

to be true; well done to Caspar for rectifying the

problem, he deserved a win and it was good to

see him bounce back from his defeat,” Schofield

said.

While an added piece of gear was the key

to Jazz Steed, Shining On benefited from a short

stint away from Sha Tin.

“Conghua has made him more relaxed,

most of my horses based there have become

more relaxed,” Lui said of the co-winner.

Schofield went on to secure his double

in the following race, the Class 4 Middle Bay

Handicap (1000m), aboard the Manfred Man-

trained Farm Bumper (Tycoon Ruler).

“He was quite impressive today - I know

him quite well from last season and he was

always close in Class 4 but today he won with a

bit of purpose,” Schofield said.

“It was a good win and Manfred had him

nice and fresh coming into today and I think

being fresh over 1000 metres is his go.”

Yeung kick starts the new season

Keith Yeung came to the fore with a double

on Wednesday night to take his tally for the

term to three wins, five shy of his last season’s

total, with 82 race meetings to go.

“Last season was a bad season and if I

was strangled by it I’d be too depressed and

wouldn’t feel like I want to do anything,” Yeung

said.

The 32-year-old kicked off the new term

with victory at the season-opening fixture and

Wednesday night’s brace started with Royal

Racer (Dreamscape) in the Class 4 Shek O

Handicap (1650m) to seal the Fownes double.

Yeung closed his account with a win for

trainer Douglas Whyte aboard Amazing Kiwi

(Helmet) in the Class 3 Chung Hom Kok

Handicap (1200m).

“Douglas told me before the race that he

thinks the horse works better than he races

because he was a little disappointed as he

knows he has ability,” Yeung said.

Amazing Kiwi surprised at 36-1, having

finished eighth first-up for the season seven

days ago over the course and distance.

“He never quite lived up to that first run,”

Whyte said, referencing a Hong Kong debut

second back in December of last year. “He’s a

morning glory, his work at home is exceptional

and the other day he had a nice run and he

pulled up well after last week’s run and I

thought you’re going to run again next week.

“I’m just glad for Keith because he’s been

a fond friend of mine for a long time and I’m

glad that he is riding with such purpose at the

moment.”

Yeung’s double takes his career-total

to 258 Hong Kong wins but he is not raising

expectations, nor setting goals for the new

season.

“If you give yourself too much expectation

then you’re going to end up with lots of

disappointment when it doesn’t happen and it

can break you,” Yeung said.

“Just stay level and keep yourself happy

– happiness is the source of everything and if

you’re not happy you’re not going to do well at

anything.”

Whyte also took home a double as

Tashidelek (Street Cry) bagged the Class 3

Deep Water Bay Handicap (1650m) under

Frenchman Alexis Badel.

“He’s a lovely horse, it’s surprised me that

he’s taken this long to win a race, he came over

in good health,” Whyte said. “He’s a lovely

individual to work with and I think the freshen

up was the biggest key to him as well as the step

back in distance first-up, that was probably the

winning move.”

The Jimmy Ting-trained Amazing Star

(Darci Brahma) triumphed in the night’s

feature, the Class 2 Big Wave Bay Handicap

(1200m) under Jerry Chau.

“He’s a very nice horse, I thought this time

he could sit behind and catch the other horses,

I think he’s improved,” Ting said. “I thought his

rating was a bit high for him so I booked Jerry

with his ten-pound claim.”

Amazing Star shot from a Class 4 rating of

58 last season to a career-high mark of 100, but

with options running out at the city circuit, Ting

will have to look to the big track with his stable

standout.

“There are no more races for him at Happy

Valley, so we have to go to Sha Tin,” Ting said.

“The outside draw is no worry to this horse

because he’s fast enough, but this time, this

race was too fast so he needed to sit a little bit,

but now we know that he can take a sit, there’s

no need to go in front.”

Jazz Steed wasn’t the only Hong Kong

International Sale graduate to win on the card;

the Tony Cruz-trained Beauty Angel (Dark

Angel) outstayed his rivals in the Class 4 South

Bay Handicap (1800m) under a driving Joao

Moreira.

“He had a good split and a beautiful run

through in traffic and he was very strong to the

line - I’m very pleased to ride another winner

for Tony Cruz who has shown me great support

and it seems like there is more to come from

this guy - he was just too good today,” Moreira

said.

Ho left the track with a double, having

taken the opener, the Class 5 Stanley Handicap

(1800m) aboard the Me Tsui-trained Strapping

Bauhinia (Tavistock). The low-rated gelding set

a new class record time of 1:48.69.

Hong Kong racing continues on Sunday at

Sha Tin with a competitive card that features the

Celebration Cup (Gr 3, 1400m), in which battle-

hardened Beauty Generation (Road To Rock)

and young upstart Golden Sixty (Medaglia

d’Oro) are set to face off.

score her first win, but she looks to have

emerged a legitimate VRC Oaks (Gr 1,

2500m) contender after her win in the

Kennedy Oaks Trial (1800m) at Flemington on

Wednesday.

The Oaks Trial, along with its Derby

equivalent, has only been run since 2017 but it

has already proven to be a reliable guide to the

blue riband event in early November.

The first Oaks Trial winner, Pinot - a

daughter of Pierro (Lonhro) - went on to add

the Oaks six weeks later, while 2018 heroine

Greysful Glamour (Stratum) finished a game

second in the main event.

Perhaps the Pierro connection will once

again prove potent, as Pensato is a sister to

the five-time Group 1 winner and successful

Coolmore stallion.

Unlike Pierro, who was sold by Darley

as a weanling, the James Cummings-trained

Pensato was retained by Godolphin and,

unlike her brother, she has not shown the same

precocity.

Finishing fifth and fourth at her first two

starts as a juvenile, both times over 1000

metres, she returned this preparation with a

second of five over 1216 metres at Moe on a

heavy track. She appeared more at home on top

of the ground when third, beaten only a neck,

in a 1300-metre maiden at Geelong earlier this

month.

Sent out the $3.80 favourite on the

back of heavy late support, Pensato raced

outside the leader under John Allen and

never really looked in much danger. Upon

straightening, she raced clear with a short,

sharp dash that quickly saw her put three

lengths on the field.

While her rivals tried to chase her down, it

was in vain. At the line, Pensato had a length

and a quarter on the Danny O’Brien-prepared

Salto Angel (Sacred Falls) with Mike Moroney’s

Star Of Eden (Wandjina) desperately clinging

on to hold third in a photo over her stablemate

Yatton (Savabeel); the pair were a length and a

half behind the winner.

“It was a nice way to break her maiden here

at headquarters in a nice race,” Godolphin’s

Melbourne representative Sean Keogh said.

“We’ve found a nice trip for her and we always

knew she had a turn of foot and was a nice style

of filly that is impeccably bred, but whether she

had the lungs to stay was a bit of a question

mark.

“But she’s ticked that box now and James

can decide where she’ll be at, but I think she

will be well suited to ten-furlong races.”

The TAB shortened Pensato into $15 from

$51 for the VRC Oaks, to be run November 5 at

Flemington.

Pensato is the eighth named foal out of

the Daylami (Doyoun) mare Miss Right Note,

a winner at Chantilly in France as well as on

Randwick’s Kensington track in Sydney.

Miss Right Note is a half-sister to top

Italian colt Laverock (Octagonal), while

further back in the family are Group 1 winners

Markofdistinction (Known Fact), Dr Devious

(Ahonoora) and Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact),

as well as last weekend’s impressive Mill Reef

Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) victor Alkumait (Showcasing).

In addition to Pierro, Miss Right Note has

also produced Group 1 placegetter Ambience

(Street Cry), who finished third in the VRC

Oaks in 2015; seven-time winner Thunder Set

(Reset); and the unraced Right Chord (Lohnro),

who fetched $1.05 million to the bid of James

Harron at this year’s Magic Millions National

Broodmare Sale.

Following in Pensato’s footsteps is a two-

year-old named Backstreets (Street Boss), a

yearling colt by Impending (Lonhro), while she

missed to Lonhro (Octagonal) last year.

BY STEVE MORAN | @STEVEM_MORAN

If recent history is any guide, then

Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

— won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

Handicap respectively.

Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off

a remarkable training feat by

managing to rejuvenate the

once retired Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield

feature.

Western Australian Smith took over the

Warrnambool stables once owned by Black

Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt

to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.

Smith conceded that he was not overly

confident that Black Heart Bart would make

it back to the races until an encouraging

Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.

"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but

then he trialled well," Smith said.

"His first race was good and then his second

run was plain, but we thought getting him up to

the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't

be chasing all the time.

"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING

Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s

Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking

despite being last and a long way off the leader

Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"

Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer

Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart

sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow

margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his

first trip away and this was his first time racing

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

think it's important if I can just keep him in his

right grade I can keep him progressing along.

We won't aim too high I don't think at this

stage. And I think if we come back this time

next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last

year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a

short neck.

Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)

was one and a half lengths away in third.

The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A

Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).

"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was

warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.

"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're

going to be in this'."

It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago

after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).

An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was

delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.

It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which

almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six

months after being seriously injured last October.

"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like

getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my

broken neck it's been a long road.

"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as

rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.

"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.

"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about

him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.

"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he

could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his

claim for a potential shot at The

Everest (1200m) when silencing

his doubters with an impressive

victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at

The Valley last night.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding

harboured plenty of criticism after his last

start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)

when he failed to settle on the front end.

However, he showed he is a bona fide Group

1 horse with an impressive win in the $1

million sprint.

Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip

began well from the inside barrier and was able

to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.

The track record holder over the course

and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes

(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly

around the turn and was able to hold off a

gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)

closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian

McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further

back in fourth.

Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative

attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.

"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism

with him than we ever got with

another certain horse [Winx]

who was probably our last Group

1 winner here.

"That's racing, everyone has

got their opinions. He's a good

horse and today he stepped away

well. James didn't panic he just

got there gradually and it was a

good race.

"You think punters get

frustrated, well owning a horse

and training a horse when you're

running in these types of races,

it's a bitter pill to take when you

don't quite get it right.

"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had

something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I

did everything wrong."

Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at

Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race

will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week

later.

"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just

see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The

Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."

Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race

while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over

the mare's performance.

McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,

two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.

"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.

"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the

race."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne

Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)

took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money

of $1,879,285.

VERDICT A fascinating renewal with up-and-coming Tilsit and TopRanking pitched in against proven Group 1 performers

Kameko and last year’s winner Benbatl. The last-named had the run of things inlast year’s race but is still a live contender while 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko is aneven bigger danger despite his 5lb penalty. The one to beat them all though may beREGAL REALITY, who looked back to the level of form shown when third to Enablein last year’s Eclipse on his penultimate start and who had excuses last time. VERDICT Some lightly raced and progressive fillies in opposition in a wellup-to-scratch renewal. Her improved last-time-out second in the

Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks makes ALPINISTA the one to beat, ahead of Antonia DeVega, a smart filly whose chance will be enhanced if there is raceday rain around, and Franconia. The last-named ran as if something was amiss last time but hadbeen progressing well for John Gosden previously. [Mel Cullinan]

VERDICT An improved 7l win upped to 7f at Goodwood last time makesIsabella Giles the one to beat on the face of it but there is a

good chance the soft ground accentuated her superiority somewhat then. She is stillmuch respected but preference is for Aidan O’Brien’s very well bred MONDAY, whoimproved a lot on her debut form when winning a Listed race at Leopardstown lasttime and whose profile strongly suggests is likely to come on again.
