Making Good Progress

We are recognising the impact of technology

on our businesses and are responding to it by

making progressive changes.

Managing DirectorBen Keswick

The Group has performed well in the first half of 2018 as our half-yearly results show. Underlying profit was up 6% with good performances, in particular, from Astra and Jardine Cycle & Carriage.

Our businesses are on a solid footing, but we should not take our success for granted. We operate in the most dynamic and rapidly-evolving continent in the world and our customers are increasingly well-informed and digitally connected, and are challenging us to do better all the time.

We are, however, well placed to take advantage of the opportunities created by our leading positions and assets, and it is exciting to see several of our businesses branching into new ventures in response. Jardine Cycle & Carriage’s investment in Vinamilk, which has a 58% market share in Vietnam, and Jardine Pacific’s acquisition of Greatview, giving it access to a new and rapidly growing wholesale market, are just two examples.

I am also pleased to see how we are recognising the impact of technology on our businesses and are responding to it by making progressive changes to how we are organised and how we deliver our products and services to our customers. For example, Dairy Farm has appointed its first Chief Customer and Chief Digital officers, and Jardine Lloyd Thompson is investing in a global system that will give a single and complete view of each of their clients and enable greater insights into the market as a whole.

Growth and expansion are all about seizing opportunities. Hongkong Land’s expanding presence in mainland China reflects the development of the market there and the increasing demand for mid-to-high end residential homes, and lifestyle and luxury retail offerings. As the Perspective on pages 8-13 shows, mainland China is the core market for Hongkong Land’s development property portfolio, accounting for just over 60% of the total developable area (as of June 2018). With the number of sales completions predicted to increase in the second half of this year, particularly in relation to Chongqing where it has its greatest concentration of projects, Hongkong Land is well placed to continue setting new benchmarks for quality in both the residential and retail premium sectors.

I expect a good year for the Group as a whole. While there will always be challenges along the way, I am confident that our continued focus on growth and delivering the best experiences to our customers will help us achieve success.

Share Your Innovations

An open forum to share knowledge across the Jardine Matheson Group on finding better ways of delivering improved customer experiences was launched by Group Managing Director Ben Keswick at the recent Senior Managers’ Meetings in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Mr Keswick highlighted how he knew that in each of the Group’s businesses, a lot of hard work is going into finding the best way to deliver the best experiences to customers using technology.

The initiative, which is run by Innovate Jardines (IJ), is open to all Group employees. Teams can create and submit a short video to the Innovate Exchange platform about an impactful innovation they have implemented. The objective is to help spread the word on successful innovations that are propelled by data driven business insights, which deliver better experiences for customers.

Mr Keswick remarked that one of the key lessons learnt from the successful challenges run by IJ since it was set up two years ago, is that

knowledge sharing and collaboration are central to unlocking innovation.

The open forum gives everyone across the Group the chance to learn from the experiences of others, be inspired to experiment with fresh ideas so teams can continue to be successful, and recognise and celebrate outstanding innovations across the Group that have generated impact.

Submissions of videos can be made until the end of September, after which videos can be viewed and voted for during October on the Innovate Exchange platform. The five most innovative teams, judged by IJ and popular vote, will be invited to Hong Kong later this year to present to senior leaders. Top honours will be awarded to one team judged on the business impact and positive customer feedback generated by their project.

Lord Sassoon Joins UK Prime Minister in Mainland ChinaIn his role as Chairman of the China-Britain Business Council and Director of the Jardine Matheson Group, Lord Sassoon joined UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s business delegation on her trip to mainland China earlier this year.

In Wuhan, Lord Sassoon attended a business forum and met with Mayor Wan Yong. In Beijing, he co-hosted a financial services roundtable with China Investment Corporation Executive Vice President Qi Bin and attended a Belt and Road Initiative roundtable. He was also present at the inaugural meeting of the UK-China CEO Council, which has been established to bring together business leaders and ministers to strengthen trade and economic co-operation. Separately, he had a meeting with Ministry of Commerce Vice Minister Qian Keming and Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Co-operation President Gu Xueming.

The delegation also visited Shanghai where Lord Sassoon hosted a UK-China Business Forum sector breakfast at Mandarin Oriental Pudong before attending the Forum itself at the new Shanghai Lujiazui Harbour City Exhibition Centre.

Beijing Party Secretary’s Visit Reflects Strong Ties The existing ties between the Jardine Matheson Group and the Beijing Government were further strengthened when Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, and Party Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, Cai Qi, became the first national level Chinese leader to visit Group Chairman Sir Henry Keswick at his Wiltshire home, Oare House. Party Secretary Cai was accompanied by a delegation of 30, which included the Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Liu Xiaoming.

During the visit, Sir Henry showed the delegation around the gardens of Oare House, which are renowned for their wide variety of rare plants and shrubs, many of them grown from seeds collected in China. The visitors also enjoyed afternoon tea in the Oare Pavilion designed by I M Pei, his only building in the UK.

Later in the day, the delegation was entertained to dinner by Sir Henry and Lady Keswick, who was presented with a scarf as a memento of the special occasion.

Jardine Matheson Group Managing Director Ben Keswick hears about the innovative features incorporated into Mannings new flagship M-Studio store in Shenzhen.

Innovation at the Forefront of Visits to Shenzhen and GuangzhouInnovation and digital technology were at the forefront of visits to Shenzhen and Guangzhou by Jardine Matheson Group Managing Director Ben Keswick.

At Mannings new flagship M-Studio store in Shenzhen, Mr Keswick had a firsthand view of the O2O digital wall, which enables customers to purchase both Mannings China and Mannings Hong Kong products online through cross border e-commerce. He and Jardine Matheson (China) Chairman David Hsu also saw how self-service checkout works using a mobile phone.

From Mannings, Mr Keswick and Mr Hsu moved to the site of Zung Fu’s new Mercedes-Benz MAR 2020 flagship store in Shenzhen Hi-tech Park. The 4S (Sales, Spare Parts, Service and Survey) store, which is the first Zung Fu store in mainland China to incorporate the MAR 2020 Autohaus design, uses digital technology and innovation in advisory, sales and service processes to provide customers with a seamless experience.

In Guangzhou, Mr Keswick toured a 7-Eleven store featuring a new design concept, which provides customers with a younger and more stylish 7-Eleven brand image. The store includes a semi-open drinks station and a brand new design hot shot counter serving hot coffee, tea and soya milk, which offer customers a more convenient and interactive shopping experience.

Lord Sassoon Visits Vietnam and Myanmar

Jardine Matheson Group Director Lord Sassoon had a full programme of government and company meetings during visits to Vietnam and Myanmar.

In Vietnam, Lord Sassoon, Jardine Cycle & Carriage Managing Director Alex Newbigging and Vietnam Country Manager Alain Cany met with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung who emphasised the positive development of the Vietnam-UK strategic partnership, particularly in the trade, investment and tourism sectors. Zung Fu Sets the Pace with Speedworks Teams working on their concept posters at the Speedworks bootcamp in Shanghai.

Zung Fu has launched ‘Speedworks’ to create a movement for innovative ideas and to inspire new ways of working across its business. The initiative is a key element of Zung Fu’s move from being an ‘excellent operator’ to an ‘innovator’, and a response to Group Managing Director Ben Keswick and Innovate Jardines (IJ) Chief Executive Michael Poon’s call earlier this year for business units to run their own IJ Challenges.

With a clear vision to foster a culture of innovation, Speedworks was set up to promote a mindset shift to focus on rapid experimentation, learning and speed of execution as a way to survive and thrive in today’s digital economy. This will include running fast experiments to test out big ideas, the introduction of new technology and partnering with startups.

Speedworks also incorporates a tailor-made online platform for Zung Fu colleagues to crowdsource ideas and collaborate within the business, nurturing people’s creative passion through innovation challenges. The first of these on ‘How to Bring Convenience to our Customers’ attracted over 165 ideas with eight teams shortlisted for an intensive three-day Bootcamp, which was held at the newly opened Mercedes me Store in Shanghai. Two ideas were subsequently selected by the judging panel to go forward

to the next stage of ‘proof of concept’ for potential funding.

Having got off to a great start, Zung Fu plans to run two Speedworks Innovation Challenges a year. “Collaboration and learning together are the main intention, along with the culture of embracing risks and the courage to fail,” said Zung Fu Speedworks Innovation & Development Head Helena Lee.

WF CENTRAL on Wangfujing

Street in Beijing.

Mainland China continues to be a major engine for growth for Hongkong Land. Since 2017, the company has made seven new land and project acquisitions, expanded its business presence into three new cities, and opened its first luxury lifestyle destination in Beijing.

The company has further expanded its existing footprint in Chongqing, the largest city in south-western China and home to Hongkong Land’s greatest concentration of projects in mainland China.

In the past year, it has branched out into new markets in Wuhan, Nanjing and Hangzhou, as well as launching WF CENTRAL, a retail-led luxury lifestyle development on Wangfujing Street in Beijing, with a powerful mix of over 130 tenants. These include top-tier luxury brands such as Dior, Gucci, Fendi and Prada, as well as flagship stores of Victoria’s Secret and Furla, and global flagship

stores of Under Armour and Pandora. There are also first- to-market restaurant and wellness brands such as CAFE LANDMARK, The Cheesecake Factory and Pure Yoga.

The development also includes a 73-room Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, which offers views over The Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Planning is underway for similar projects elsewhere in Beijing as well as in Shanghai.

“WF CENTRAL is playing a key role in transforming and revitalising Wangfujing by bringing in global brands and adding sophistication and diversity to the area, while still retaining its rich cultural heritage,” said Hongkong Land Chief Executive Robert Wong.

“WF CENTRAL reflects our strategy of setting new benchmarks for quality wherever we invest and making each property a ‘best-in-class’ destination.”

Hongkong Land – Setting New Benchmarks in Mainland China

08

Seizing the OpportunityMainland China is the core market for Hongkong Land’s development property portfolio, accounting for just over 60% of the total developable area (as of June 2018) and, in 2017, total completed sales of US$2.4 billion.

Within Chongqing, Hongkong Land has eight projects spanning 4.3 million square metres, representing 76% of its mainland China exposure in this sector by developable area (as of June 2018).

The increase in spending power of China’s rising middle class has created many opportunities in the property market. Aspirations for a higher standard of living and a

Standing Out in the MarketHongkong Land has 21 years of experience in the mainland China property market and in that time has developed a solid reputation and become adept at overcoming challenges associated with operating in that environment.

One of the current challenges is how to deal with the cooling measures enforced in the past two years by the Chinese government – such as home purchase restrictions, selling-price ceilings and tightened credit – to curb overheating of the real estate market. The measures have suppressed supply and demand in the property market and developers have to adapt quickly to the constantly changing market environment.

In order to remain agile and stay ahead of the competition, Hongkong Land works with both local and international partners. The company also focuses on selected first- and second-tier cities that are expanding and upgrading. In Chongqing, for example, Hongkong Land invited Merlin Entertainments to open a Madame Tussauds and Sea Life underwater world in Landmark Riverside Park, their first such ventures in Western China.

This strengthened the development’s competitiveness as a major tourist attraction in Chongqing. Similarly, within ten months of opening, WF CENTRAL has partnered with international organisations including the Barbican Centre, Serpentine Galleries, and MAISON&OBJET.

Another creative solution is to acquire new projects through mergers and acquisitions. This allows Hongkong Land to enter into new markets without having to build up a local presence from scratch, and has led to its successful entry into Hangzhou and Wuhan.

Despite the Government’s cooling measures, in January, the average home price in China’s 70 major cities increased by 4.7% compared with the same period a year earlier, and a poll of 13 economists and property analysts forecasted an average increase of one percent in new home prices in 2018, according to figures from China’s National Bureau of Statistics. This is borne out by a rise in average prices in Chengdu, Chongqing and Nanjing where Hongkong Land has projects and also reflects a shortage of new residential properties in leading cities combined with inventory levels at a record-low.

“The demand for high quality properties in the residential, retail, and office markets is increasing,” said Mr Wong. “These are all sectors where Hongkong Land’s expertise, resources and delivery of premium luxury products are comparative advantages and will help us to expand in the mid- and long-term.”

In many ways the cooler ‘healthier’ market has been to Hongkong Land’s advantage, allowing more opportunities to acquire sites either through public

better lifestyle are generating greater demand for mid- to high-end residential homes and lifestyle and luxury retail offerings with bespoke products and services, as well as better education for children and healthcare for the elderly.

“In this respect, Hongkong Land is well-placed with its strong focus on the mid-to-high end of the market and its long established reputation for quality. These attributes differentiate us from the general development community,” said Mr Wong.

Perspective

Chongqing Chongqing remains the most significant market in mainland China with three wholly-owned projects and five 50%-owned joint ventures. Two of these are recently acquired projects — Liangjiang, which is adjacent to New Bamboo Grove, and Lijia, a residential area along the south bank of the Jialing River. The 100%-owned Liangjiang project has a total gross floor area (GFA) of some 161,000 sq. m., while the 50%-owned site located in Lijia has a total GFA of some 114,000 sq. m. Both projects will be primarily residential with accompanying commercial elements, and will be completed in 2020.

tender, or existing landowners, who are prepared to negotiate with Hongkong Land because of its reputation.

“Last year the environment was healthier and developers were generally taking a much more measured approach,” said Mr Wong. “This contrasts with a red-hot market environment, like in 2016, when developers became very competitive due to ample liquidity.”

This is demonstrated by the fact that in 2016, Hongkong Land did not make any acquisitions in mainland China, while in the 12 months up to March 2018, it made seven.

“Some may think this is an exceptional rate of expansion, and possibly difficult in terms of management and finance,” added Mr Wong. “The reality is that acquisition opportunities of prime sites for either development or investment projects do not arise regularly, and Hongkong Land has gratefully captured these recent opportunities at reasonable prices, giving us the potential for good margins.”

A joint venture with China Merchants and Country Garden, the project has a prime location in the city centre, along the Qinhuai River and adjacent to the Old City Wall built during the Ming Dynasty over 600 years ago. The project, which will include high quality townhouses, duplexes, a premium retail mall and a luxury boutique hotel, occupies a riverfront site of 20 hectares with a total GFA of approximately 218,000 sq. m. Completion in phases is due in 2021.

HangzhouAnother new market for Hongkong Land, Hangzhou, the capital and most populous city of Zhejiang Province in east China, is best known for the celebrated West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In a joint venture with Yanlord and Transfar Group, Hongkong Land will develop two mixed-used sites in Xiaoshan District. The project mainly consists of residential, retail and serviced apartments, supplemented with hospital and communal facilities as well as a hotel and convention centre. The new Mercedes-Benz Brand Centre at Zung Fu House has

the largest car showroom in Hong Kong and features a suite

Zung Fu Unveils World-Class Brand Centre

Zung Fu has unveiled Hong Kong’s largest Mercedes-Benz dealership designed to offer facilities and services to meet the expectations of the next generation of customers.

Located in Chai Wan, just 15 minutes away from the prime district of Causeway Bay, the new Mercedes-Benz Brand Centre boasts the city’s largest car showroom, enabling Mercedes-Benz customers to see and explore over 20 of the latest models. The multi-storey Brand Centre also houses fully integrated aftersales facilities and a one-stop shop for Mercedes-Benz owners.

Particular focus has been placed on increasing the enjoyment of car ownership. There are new leisure facilities for families including the Little Stars Kids Club, a dedicated children’s play room, a clubhouse style bistro by the harbour, and a terrace with wonderful sea views where the Mercedes-Benz owning community can enjoy exciting events.

Having served Mercedes-Benz customers in Hong Kong for over 60 years, Zung Fu

understands that their lives are increasingly busy and that time is precious. This was reflected in a ‘Tell Us What You Think’ survey conducted before the opening. Over 6,000 car owners surveyed, out of over one third of vehicle owners would prefer to visit a dentist than arrange for their cars to be serviced!

This reinforces Zung Fu’s focus on services that deliver ever more convenience. For example, vehicle services can now be booked online and then completed within the same day. For those who travel, a new airport Drop & Fly service allows customers to have their car serviced while they are away. New Drop-off and Pick-up points have also been introduced, including one at Causeway Bay.

“These new services and facilities aim to minimise disruption and maximise convenience for Hong Kong’s Mercedes-Benz owners,” said Zung Fu Chief Executive Ben Birks. “We are committed to delivering a noticeably more enjoyable showroom experience, while also making ownership even easier and more convenient.”

Hacis’ SuperLink China Direct road feeder service will soon

reach Zhuhai and the western Pearl River Delta

in just 40 minutes.

Hacis Reaches Further into Mainland ChinaHong Kong Air Cargo Industry Services Limited (Hacis), the value-added logistics arm of Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl), has entered into a strategic partnership with Chu Kong Shipping Enterprises (Group) Company Limited to develop joint logistics activity throughout the western part of the Pearl River Delta (PRD).

The first project will be a new inland cargo depot in Zhuhai Free Trade Zone. This will bring the number of Hacis depots in southern mainland China to nine and enable Hacis to further develop its SuperLink China Direct road feeder service network. It will also allow Hacis to take full advantage of the imminent opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge, which will slash trucking times between the western PRD and Hong Kong International Airport by around two thirds.

Meanwhile, Florida-based freighter operator, Western Global Airlines, has appointed Hactl to handle its first scheduled twice-weekly 747-400F service between Hong Kong and Los Angeles. The new service is being operated in partnership with US forwarder Flexport.

Hactl’s expertise was clearly demonstrated when it handled two charter flights for another customer, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, each carrying 20-metre long machinery components weighing 18,800 kilogrammes. The outsize loads had to be unloaded through the aircrafts’ nose doors and lowered in perfect alignment to avoid any damage to the cargo.

“This needs a ‘connected dealer’ response so that we can continue to fulfil our aim of being easy, useful and surprising for our customers,” said Mr Cranswick.

IKEA Indonesia Scoops New Marketing Award IKEA Indonesia has won first place for ‘Best Content Marketing Implementation in the Retail Industry’ in the Indonesia Content Marketing Awards (ICMA) 2018.

The ICMA 2018 are the first such awards in Indonesia to recognise content marketing effort and the creativity of brands. They also present the opportunity for brands to communicate with targeted audiences and elevate their presence through social media.

Altogether more than 8,000 brands were monitored and screened by the awards committee ranging from retail, food, finance, and government to the clothing industry. Award nominees were selected, based on data available from analytic tools and qualitative analysis, for their performance, quality of content or brand story and engagement with their audience. The ICMA did not specifically assess a special programme or campaign. Instead, as in the case of IKEA Indonesia, the panel of judges monitored the content of websites and social media from 2017 until March 2018 looking at what was inspirational, useful for the customer or public, interactive, and consistent between website and social media platforms.

The legal teams at both Jardine Cycle & Carriage (JC&C) in Singapore and Astra in Indonesia have achieved places on the inaugural Legal 500 General Counsel Powerlist for Southeast Asia. The GC Powerlist is a series of worldwide publications, highlighting the most influential in-house lawyers in business today and the new list recognises influential and innovative in-house legal and corporate teams working in the Southeast Asia region.

JC&C’s inclusion on the list attests to its Legal & Corporate Affairs team’s relentless drive for the highest standards of work while deepening its collaboration with different units to support business growth and improve processes with innovative solutions. The team was deeply involved in JC&C’s acquisition of a 10% interest in Vietnam’s largest company by market capitalisation, Vinamilk, for US$1.15 billion in November 2017.

The inclusion of Astra’s legal department mentions how the group’s presence in a number of sectors – from extractives, to manufacturing, to IT – creates an unusual degree of complexity for its legal team. Made up of some of Indonesia’s best in-house lawyers, the team has worked on major deals such as the purchase of a stake in the developer of a township on the outskirts of Jakarta for US$137 million in 2017.

Engaging Activities at MINDSET

On Mental Health from the Jardine Ambassadors

Showing Spirit

Health in Mind (HIM) student advocates have been taking part in a number of activities designed to help them develop understanding and acceptance of people with mental illness.

Seventy-seven student advocates from eight secondary schools came together for the Inter-School Mental Health Knowledge Quiz, which was held at Pui Tak Canossian College in Aberdeen in Hong Kong. Participants were asked questions related to the mental health information they had learnt through workshops held during the HIM programme and various mini-sports games were added to make the competition more interesting and challenging. The student advocates were also asked to deliver messages of understanding and acceptance of people with mental illness through a slogan competition.

At the end of the event, St. Paul’s School (Lam Tin) was declared the winner.

Meanwhile, the HIM Finale was held at The Rotunda, Exchange Square in Central to mark the completion of the HIM programme by 95 second-year student advocates.

Teachers from nine participating schools, partnering non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Jardine Ambassadors and MINDSET Executive Committee members attended the

event during which student advocates from two schools shared their experiences. Each participating school also presented a short video.

Outstanding HIM students were presented with certificates by Guests of Honour, Jardine Matheson Group Deputy Managing Director and MINDSET Governor Y K Pang and Hospital Authority Director of Cluster Service Dr Tony Ko. The students were also awarded summer work experience placements in Group companies.

In another form of engagement, over 120 participants, including people in recovery from six NGOs, MINDSET Executive Committee Members, Jardine Ambassadors and their friends gathered together for the annual MINDSET Talent Show. Ten performing and eight cheering teams showcased their talents and competed for various awards, with Kwok Chung from Fu Hong Society – Sunrise Centre being crowned ‘Champion’ for his harmonica performance, and Kwai Chung Hospital winning the cheering team award.

Jacky Chan from Gammon, Champion of the Jardine Sports Association Singing Contest, also joined the show as a guest performer and judge.

A number of initiatives have been introduced to help Jardine Ambassadors (JAs) in Singapore succeed in implementing MINDSET projects. They include opportunities to sharpen competencies such as project management and internal and external influencing abilities, all skillsets that will support professional development.

Several other schemes have also been rolled out to develop and recognise the JA programme’s dedicated employee volunteers. Among these are a specially-designed collar pin for JAs, past and present, and a unique ‘Changemaker’ email signature, which serves as a form of differentiation and recognition for their contribution to the mental health community. ‘JA of the Quarter’ was introduced in mid-2017 to honour exceptional JAs who perform above and beyond their duties. In addition, JAs’ immediate supervisors receive a quarterly feedback on each JA’s performance from their respective MINDSET team advisers.

Meanwhile, MINDSET Steering Committee, advisers, Jardine business leaders, human resources representatives, voluntary welfare organisations, and JAs’ immediate supervisors attended a ceremony to mark the completion of the JAs Programme for 19 Jardine Ambassadors and to acknowledge and appreciate their contributions to the mental health community. Their legacy is being carried on by 22 new Ambassadors.

Mental Health Promoted Among Group CompaniesSeveral events have been held among Jardine Matheson Group companies with the objective of promoting mental health and wellbeing.

Thirty colleagues from across the Group participated in a Mental Health First Aid Standard Course, which was organised by MINDSET and The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong.

The two-day course built on the established evidence that while raising awareness about wellbeing at work is a healthy start, having a trained manager available for employees to talk to about their mental health in a time of crisis is a more effective strategy.

Meanwhile, 74 colleagues from Hactl, Jardine Matheson, and Hongkong Land attended three Zentangle classes, a relaxing and enjoyable way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns, known as tangles.

The activity enabled colleagues to relax after a busy day at work and learn how to enhance their wellbeing.

In another activity, 25 people in recovery from Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service and Caritas Wellness Link (Tsuen Wan) along with 25 staff from Hongkong Land, Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong and Jardine Schindler got to know each other during two Pizza Hut Hong Kong workshops. As well as interacting through ice-breaking games, the participants also had fun making pizzas.

Fast-Paced Action Expected at Rat Race 2018Teams are preparing for fast-paced action at CENTRAL Rat Race 2018, which will take place on Sunday, 26th August in the heart of Hong Kong’s Central business district.

Themed on the corporate world, the relay Rat Race requires teams of eight, dressed in costumes and passing a briefcase as the baton, to navigate a tricky course through Central while overcoming obstacles. This year these will include crossing a rope bridge and navigating giant cheese obstacles while ‘driving’ a cheese car.

Since its inauguration in 2006, nearly 5,000 runners have participated in the Race, helping to raise over HK$30 million (US$3.8 million) for MINDSET.

“The CENTRAL Rat Race advocates work-life balance in a fast-paced city, emphasises the importance of teamwork, and reminds us of the importance of maintaining mental health and physical fitness,” said Hongkong Land Executive Director Raymond Chow.

Build-up to the event has included an interactive exhibition at The Rotunda, Exchange Square and workshops for children aged five to ten and their families.

Inclusivity Embedded in Cycle & Carriage Bintang Inclusivity is not a recent ‘fad’ at Cycle & Carriage (C&C) Bintang, but has been embedded for many years, as reflected by the achievements of various employees.

Within its workforce are three hearing-impaired employees who have been working at C&C Bintang for over 30 years each.

Two of them, Ahmad Hamzah and Ravi Chandran Balakrishnan of the Batu Caves outlet, are among Malaysia’s most experienced spray paint specialists. They have also inspired fellow employees to learn sign language to better communicate with them.

Inclusivity extends to the opportunities C&C provides for continuous learning. Administrative Manager Quay Chew Hun, who is also hearing-impaired, was given the opportunity to attend and graduate from the Federation School of the Deaf in Penang, while Warehouse Assistant Leow Yuet Shang, who has been with C&C Bintang for 23 years and has autism, was selected to participate in the Mercedes-Benz Apprentice Programme.

“C&C Bintang does not view disabilities as a reason to exclude persons from the workforce. We believe in equal opportunity,” said Chief Executive Officer Wilfrid Foo.

Another example is C&C Bintang’s only female workshop technician, 25-year old Nur ‘Izzah ‘Atiqah Ahmad, who is breaking the conventions in a male-dominated industry. She believes that nothing is impossible for her if she works hard.

Hearing-impaired Ahmad Hamzah is among Malaysia’s most experienced spray paint specialists and has worked for Cycle & Carriage Bintang for over 30 years.

Jardine Motors Group UK Supports Better Gender BalanceJardine Motors Group UK (JMG UK) is at the forefront of a campaign to encourage girls and young women to consider a career in the automotive industry.

JMG UK’s Chief Executive Officer Neil Williamson, and Group Human Resources Director Clare Martin are ambassadors for the UK automotive industry’s 30% Club, a grassroots programme for girls aged 14-16, aiming to have 30% of industry management positions held by women by 2030. Within JMG UK, the number of managerial positions held by women has risen from 8% in 2016 to 21%, with the aim of reaching 28% by the end of 2018.

JMG UK also participates in a ‘Speakers for Schools’ programme for young people considering their career options. In support of this, JMG’s dealerships championed ‘Bring Your Daughter to Work Day’ with dozens of daughters of colleagues, aged between 12 and 22, joining their parents at work.

In Milton Keynes Audi, Saima Rahman, daughter of General Sales Manager Mansur Rahman, Victoria Greaves, daughter of Assistant Service Manager Richard Greaves, and Lana-Rees Aidoo, daughter of Dealership Accountant Esther Klutsey, attended the morning sales meeting before learning about all aspects of the dealership. They also observed a customer sale, engaged in a Q&A with the sales team, and enjoyed a test drive in an Audi R8.

Astra business United Tractors (UT), the leading and largest distributor of heavy equipment in Indonesia, has developed an innovative model for predictive maintenance, which is expected to save up to US$1.65 million a year by avoiding the premature failure of component parts and subsequent breakdown of machinery, much of it used in the mining sectors.

The idea for the predictive maintenance model arose as UT was engaged in a process to start its digitalisation journey. During research, the initial team came across a video on how doctors can predict the fatality of prematurely born babies by analysing their vital signs.

“We thought if doctors can do it for babies using limited data, then we with the advantage of richer data from telemetry sensors should be able to predict machinery failure,” said Head of UT Digitalisation Cindy Christian.

The biggest challenge was bringing together data going back many years. Sensor data was manually downloaded and stored on site, while maintenance data that recorded component failure and replacement was mostly paper based. Ultimately many boxes of documents were shipped to UT’s head office in Jakarta for scanning and input.

An App was created to enable the input of all data in a digital format and a dashboard was also built to monitor, control and detail the condition of machinery, including an alert for any abnormality.

For many, this improvement was an impressive enough achievement. Taking it to another level by developing a predictive maintenance model would verge on the impossible. Not, however, for the UT team.

“Many people thought we should focus on digitising manual processes, but the goal of UT digitalisation is to create an extraordinary customer experience. Unscheduled breakdowns have been customers’ biggest issue so the ability to predict and prevent these will enable us to deliver that goal,” said Head of Predictive Maintenance Ferdinand Wijaya. “We had our ups and downs, but supported by excellent teamwork, we achieved the impossible.”

The pilot model is centred around two heavy machines, the HD785, which is a large dump truck and the PC2000, a large hydraulic excavator. In total, it can predict failure for nine key components.

UT is the first player in Indonesia to develop a predictive maintenance model for heavy equipment,” said Ms Christian. “We are delighted with the results and strongly believe that this innovation will significantly strengthen our position in the market in Indonesia.”
