It has been an honor to serve as the CSIFoundation BoardPresident for the pastthree years. During thattime, the Foundation has,as always, workedtirelessly to further theMission, Vision, and Valuesof the College of Staten

Island, helping to make it a better institution, inservice to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community.

Among our many accomplishments during the pastyear, we have seen the success of the initiation in2009 of an annual Celestial Ball where the Friends,Alumni Association, and Foundation work togetherto enhance scholarship and program support at theCollege, and which has resulted in thedevelopment of a major gift program. In addition, the Foundation began and conducted a feasibilitystudy that surveyed more than 30 individuals, leading to preparation for a capital campaign. Also, with the help of the Alumni Association, wesurveyed our alumni, which has led to increasedoutreach to alumni, both regionally and nationally.

Now, as Dr. Christine Cea assumes the FoundationBoard Presidency, I look forward to working withher, as well as CSI President Dr. Tomás D. Moralesand Vice President for Institutional Advancementand External Affairs Barbara Eshoo, to furtherstrengthen the Foundation's efforts to ensure thatour College continues to grow and effect positive change for everyone in our communityand beyond.

I am proud of the wonderful achievements of theCSI Foundation and it is my pleasure to remain amember of the Board as the College moves forwardinto a bright future and a new era.

Sincerely,

Robert S. Cutrona Sr.Immediate Past President, CSI Foundation

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) and the International Union of Pure and AppliedChemistry (IUPAC) have declared that 2011 is the International Yearof Chemistry.

One of the many special events being held this year is thepublication of the Top 100 Chemists, 2000-2010, Special Report onHigh-Impact Chemists by Thomson Reuters.

Dr. Michal Kruk,Associate Professor of Chemistry at the College ofStaten Island, received the distinction of being included on this list, which celebrates the scientists who have achieved the highestcitation impact scores (number of citations per paper) for chemistrypapers published since January 2000.

Thomson Reuters, one of the most reputable agencies that compilesrankings in the sciences, measures the impact of all chemistry paperspublished by each scientist. According to Thomson Reuters,“Citation impact is a weighted measure of influence that seeks toreveal consistently superior performance.”

Dr. Kruk was ranked 72nd on the list with an impact score of 61.39(the average for chemists over that span was 11.07). Approximatelyone million chemists were recorded in the journal publicationsindexed by Thomson Reuters during the last decade.

Dr. Kruk was modest upon hearing of his placement in the ranking, saying that he “did not expect such recognition” and consideredthe achievement a “great distinction.” He was also quick to credithis colleagues and students, “I have worked with a number ofexcellent scientists.”

Dr. Michal Kruk received his MS degree in Chemistry from MariaCurie-Sklodowska University in Lublin, Poland in 1994 under theguidance of Dr. Andrzej Patrykiejew. His PhD dissertation inChemistry under the guidance of Dr. Mietek Jaroniec was defended atKent State University (Kent, OH) in 1998. Dr. Kruk continuedworking with Dr. Jaroniec as a postdoctoral fellow from 1998 to2003, after which he joined Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh,PA) for two years, working with Drs. Krzysztof Matyjaszewski andTomasz Kowalewski as advisers.

Dr. Kruk, whose work is supported by grants from the PetroleumResearch Fund (PRF) and the National Science Foundation (NSF),joined CSI as an Assistant Professor in September 2005 and has beenactively involved in research, teaching, and service to CSI and thescientific community. “The faculty as well as the administration ofCSI and CUNY are very supportive of my research program,” he said.

The focus of Dr. Kruk’s research is primarily on high-surface-areananoporous materials with pores from two to 50 nanometers (nm)in diameter, which are arranged in ordered arrays, much likemicroscopic honeycombs. The surface area of these solid materialsmeasures several hundred square meters per gram, the equivalent ofa basketball court in one gram of material.

This area of work is of significant interest due to the fact that thesematerials can be used in the removal of toxic substances from waterand air, energy storage, electronics, and the controlled release oftherapeutic substances. At CSI, Dr. Kruk, along with two postdoctoralfellows, five graduate students, and about 20 undergraduatestudents, has been working on the synthesis of these materials aswell as their functionalization.

An important aspect of earning this achievement is that it “givesexposure to the remarkable research that takes place at CSI, and inour Chemistry Department in particular,” noted Dr. Kruk, who isenthusiastic about his future work at CSI. “The College of StatenIsland has been a great place to advance research with bright andextremely dedicated students.”

Mark Barahman, a senior with the MacaulayHonors College at the College of StatenIsland (CSI) and a Goldsmith Scholar, wasnamed a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarshipwinner, a first in the history of CSI.

The Goldwater Scholarship was establishedby the United States Congress in 1986 and isthe premiere federally funded undergraduateaward of its type. It is designed to foster andencourage outstanding students to pursuecareers and PhDs in the sciences, engineering, mathematics, computerscience, and related fields. Only 300 studentsnationwide earn this prestigious distinction.

Dan Feldman, also a senior in the MacaulayHonors College at CSI, is majoring in Physicswith a concentration in Astronomy. He hasreceived an Honorable Mention for theGoldwater Scholarship. Only 150 studentsreceive an honorable mention award.

A Biochemistry major at CSI, Mark hasworked in two prestigious laboratories—theneuroscience lab of Professor Abdeslem ElIdrissi and the chemistry lab of ProfessorAlan Lyons. He currently works with Dr.Lyons on research related to super-hydrophobic surfaces.

Mark’s most notable accomplishment duringthe summer of 2009 was the constructionand programming of a robotic printer thatprints in three dimensions (3D) on amicroscopic scale.

“Commercial 3D printers are available, butthey are often extremely expensive, fragile, and very limited with respect to the buildingmaterial,” notes Barahman. “We needed tobuild something that would allow us broadapplicability and flexibility, while also beinginexpensive and scalable to industrial-sizeprocesses.”

“He programmed the robot early thatsummer and quickly developed two printingmethods to produce ‘super-hydrophobicsurfaces’,” commented Dr. Lyons. “Onemethod used highly viscous materials that

deposited drops similar to a chocolate kiss, and the other method used a lower viscositymaterial that printed thinner, pancake-shaped layers.”

Both of these methods created super-hydrophobic surfaces, three-dimensionalsurfaces that hold droplets of water onmultiple microscopic “spikes.” This surfaceprevents the water droplet from stronglyadhering to the surface, allowing it to rollrather effortlessly, while maintaining theintegrity of its spherical shape.

When these surfaces are used, the fluids areable to effortlessly move along the surfacewith minimal force. These surfaces can beapplied to facilitate transportation of fluidsin the medical profession.

The next challenge was controlling thedirection of the water droplet flow on thesesuper-hydrophobic surfaces.

Looking to nature, Mark became inspired bythe water-shedding properties of thebutterfly’s wing. When a butterfly lowers itswings, the water rolls off onto the ground. When the wing is raised, the water is pinnedand does not roll down the wing onto thebody of the butterfly. This adaptation keepsthe butterfly’s body dryer and lighter.

Mark experimented with multiple concepts, and learned that by programming therobotic printer to deposit the 3D “kisses” and“pancakes” at an angle, the water dropletwould flow easily in one direction, and withgreat difficulty in the other direction.

On the microscale, Mark had developed asynthetic material that emulated the watershedding effects of the butterfly wing. Thisnew biomemetic surface, containing angled“spikes,” acted as a “one-way” sign or “liquidratchet” controlling the directional flow ofwater, using only the interactive propertiesof the fluid with the solid.

Whereas super-hydrophobic devices allowfor the easy transportation of fluids withinmany applications in the medical field, these

new directional devices may transportcooling fluid in micro-electronic deviceswithout back flow. This could minimize thesize and heat-producing pressure oftenneeded for the transportation of fluid, andallow for a 360-degree applicationenvironment without the chance ofbackflow.

“I am exceedingly proud of Mark’s importantresearch at CSI,” said Dr. Lyons. “He is aserious scientist who works very hard andthinks deeply about problems. I expect thatwhen he enters graduate school he will rankamongst the top echelon of all graduatestudents.”

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations toMark Barahman for his well-deserveddistinction,” said CSI President Dr. Tomás D.Morales. “He has forged a place for himselfin the history of the College by being thefirst Goldwater Scholar at CSI, and hasearned himself great honor and nationalrecognition. I offer my thanks to his facultymentors for supporting Mr. Barahman’sacademic goals, and challenging him tosucceed. Together we are bolstering CSI’snational and world-class reputation.”

“Winning the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarshipwould not have been more than a dreamwithout the guidance and teaching of mymentors and professors at CSI,” Barahmanstates. “The scientific training andopportunities at CUNY are first class. I amtruly grateful to have the opportunity towork with experienced and distinguishedscientists like Dr. Alan Lyons, and to betaught and guided by Dr. Fred Naider, Dr.Charles Kramer, and Dr. Abdeslem El Idrissi.I am excited about winning this award, as itreveals the terrific opportunities CSI offersand the world-class science taking place atthe labs.”

Mark’s professional aspirations includeobtaining an MD/PhD in the field ofBiomedical Engineering.
