I t ’s a family affair with the Madrigal family a driving force for MMR’s efforts to rescue as many dogs as possible. Jessica’s brother Tommy Madrigal volunteers and fosters dogs with MMR too. Tommy also worked as a server at 7 Mile House for several years. Both Jessica and Tommy agree that fostering a pup is very rewarding. “Being a dog owner or foster family is the easiest form of anti-depressant. Unbridled joy is guaranteed whenever you come home, it’s truly therapeutic!” shares Tommy Madrigal. “If you have the time to invest, it’s worth it for both you and the dog.”

When 7 Mile House opened up their heated patio dining area in the spring of 2014, they began offering a dog-friendly menu for furry friends called “Paws on the Patio,” which led to the partnership with MMR.

7 Mile House donates $1 from every dog meal purchase to MMR, and provides a space for dog adoptions to take place throughout the year. Patrons of 7 Mile House are able to see the dogs (mostly puppies) up close, and get information about becoming a foster family or choose to rescue/adopt.

Bring your dogs to 7 Mile House on Friday, December 23rd from 12-5pm,

for a Holi-Dog Party and adoption day. Dogs eat free!

TECHNOLOGY?BY: CURTIS ROE, Treasurer and Board Member Brisbane Chamber of Commerce, CPA Director - Finance, Purcell Murray, [email protected]

Funny thing, at least it seems so, my parents don’t use ATM’s. They don’t trust them. Even at the super market they won’t use a debit card. Maybe you have seen them. They are the one’s manually writing a check. Compared to my grandparents, they were cutting edge. I understand that when my dad was a kid, he would have to go with my grandmother to pay bills. They would go to places like the utility company, stand in line, and pay with cash. For the longest time, grandma didn’t trust checks.

W h e n I s t a r t e d s t u d y i n g accounting, the personal computer was still fairly new. Keeping the books meant just that, manually recording transactions in a book. I am curious how that is taught today. The theory applied to the record keeping process hasn’t changed. Our financial accounting software has subsidiary ledgers (books) that feed into the general ledger. It’s done electronically and takes only

moments. The process is all hidden in the software code.

Today, it is hard to imagine what it would be like without the current technology. Imagine someone manually writing on paper the details of an order. That paper goes to another department who then fulfills the order and either adds to the existing paper or creates another paper document. Then when that is done, someone takes all the paper for that day, summarizes it and posts it to a book. Then another entry is sent to the general ledger.

This could require teams of people just for the record keeping. Each person would have specific duties relating to their limited area. It was very common for people to have manual adding machines at their desks. Ever see one? You punch the keys and then pull a lever on the side. The math is done and printed on paper. These processes have all been streamlined. We are more efficient now. Any

personal computer has the power to run software that does the jobs formerly performed by many people. I am guessing that most people who interface with these applications don’t really know what the software is doing.

G r a n d m a n e v e r d i d g e t comfortable with a debit card. She did get really comfortable with a credit card though. Too comfortable. She got to be real famous with some of the mail order companies. I sometimes wonder about the future. If today’s accountants don’t understand what the software is doing, can they ever figure out what to do if it stops? Maybe I am just funny like the generations before me.

THINK BRISBANE — KEEP OUR ECONOMY STRONG!

WELCOME 2017BY: MITCH BULL, Brisbane Chamber President and CEO [email protected]

It’s hard to believe that the holidays are just around the corner. The year has just flown by, and with a later than usual Thanksgiving it has hastened the holidays and the end of the year sooner that many of us are

ready for.

I want to congratulate incoming Mayor Lori Liu and look forward to working with her and the council for 2017. A big thank you also goes out to “former” Mayor Cliff Lentz as he guided the council through another very good year, as the economy has continued to grow and the Brisbane business community has continued to grow. Hat’s off to the new council as they move with us into 2016, a year that is shaping up to be very busy with the opportunities and challenges due to be considered by the council.

I also wish to thank Board Chair Dilmohan Chadha, Vice President Jason Dorfman, Treasurer Curtis Roe and Secretary Jennifer Wilder-Smith for their work and guidance as the Chamber Board Officers for 2016, and re-elected to serve in the same capacities for 2017. I look forward to again working with our Officers and Board Members. All of our Board Members are volunteers and give of their time and resources to help to ensure that Brisbane is a great place to live, work and to do business. I thank them for another year for guidance and partnership as we couldn’t serve the community without their help and vision. I would also like to thank Alison Wilson for another great year working with the Chamber and helping us to “get the story out” each month with the Luminary. It takes a lot to get a publication ready each month – it’s kind of like a ”term- paper” that doesn’t ever end.

Last week we had a very well attended and joyous Holiday Mixer at the L & D Bistro in the Brisbane Village Shopping Center. Thank you to everyone who attended to make it a great success, and to Leo, Daniel, their families and staff who catered and hosted the event – the food was wonderful.

L a s t l y, a v i b r an t community has to have a balanced and vibrant business sector to ensure stable revenue for the community, and to be good corporate citizens who help to create an environment where we all can benefit.” Please remember to shop local for the holidays when you can and support the brands and businesses that we have as friends and neighbors.

Best Wishes to one and all for a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year!!

We are interested in ideas of what you would like to see in future issues of the Luminary and want to hear your thoughts. You can e-mail us at: [email protected], or send us a note at the chamber office.

by February 10, 2017, and the library construction is anticipated to begin in 2018. We can’t wait to see the library design as it continues to take shape!

We are continuing to move forward with the Parkside Precise Plan, which provides an important tool for the community to take a proactive role in re-envisioning the entrance to our town. The goal is to design this area in a way that reflects our unique small-town feel, provides a vibrant environment for local businesses to thrive, and includes amenities that our residents can enjoy.

Finally, we are moving forward with our consideration of the Baylands project, the most significant project to date in our city’s history. Beginning in the Fall of 2016, the Council has held monthly public hearings to review the Environmental Impact Report (EIR). The Council will complete its review by the Spring of 2017 and thereafter begin its deliberations. Guided by its Sustainability Framework, the Council will hold a workshop on January

17, 2017 and visit a nearby One Planet Living community, Sonoma Mountain Village on January 21st, to learn about examples of sustainable development practices.

As your incoming Mayor, I hope to open up the dialogue that makes our community special by holding “Lattes with Lori” at Madhouse Coffee once a month on Saturday mornings. I look forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions on how we can make Brisbane an even better place to live! Happy Holidays!

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR TRASH?IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE!BY: TERESA MONTGOMERY, Brisbane Chamber, Board Member, Sustainability Manager, South San Francisco Scavenger @ssfscavenger.com

According to CalRecycle, it’s estimated that between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, more than 1 million tons of additional waste is generated each week nationwide. You can help reduce this waste by following these tips:

• Do your best to buy only the groceries you will need. Have a plan for leftovers (soup anyone?). Compost the rest. Your green Organics cart is happy to eat things you won’t. Feed it your turkey and ham bones, coffee grounds & filters, corn cobs, fruit peels & pits, unwanted fruitcakes and stale gingerbread houses.

• Go ahead and use nice plates, silverware, glasses and linens for your holiday feast. Cleaning up may take extra effort but you’ll have much less waste. If you must use disposable tableware, choose compostable products. Refuse to use Styrofoam.

• Give earth-friendly gifts.

- Give an edible or growing gift. Who doesn’t like baked goods or a beautifully potted plant?

- Consider giving the gift of an experience rather than a product. Concert & movie tickets, registration to an art or cooking class, a gift certificate for a manicure or pedicure, zoo & museum memberships, and State Park passes are good examples.

- Choose products that won’t quickly end up in the landfill. If giving toys, clothing, shoes, jewelry or electronics, choose durable options that can be enjoyed for years to come. If a gift requires batteries, buy rechargeable.

- Buy gifts that encourage reuse and conservation: reusable shopping bags, refillable water bottles & coffee mugs, learning thermostats, smart light switches, and LED lighting for example.

- Steer clear of giftwrap that isn’t reusable, recyclable or compostable. Avoid plastic ribbons and bows. Consider packaging gifts in a reusable bag, pillow case, or towel (bath, kitchen or beach!). Use last year’s holiday cards to make gift tags.

• Recycle your Christmas tree. Put it on or near the curb on your regular collection day. Be sure it’s free of the stand and all decorations. Cut it in half if it’s larger than 6’ and don’t bag or tie it up. If you like to garden, be sure to keep some pine needles to use as mulch. Did you know that slugs and snails avoid crawling over them?

• Compost live decorations like pinecones, poinsettias, wreaths and garlands. Make sure they are free of paint, glitter, plastic and metal before placing in your green Organics cart.

IRS LOWERS MILEAGE RATES FOR 2017BY: JEFF STIMPSON, http://www.accountingtoday.com/news/irs-lowers-mileage-rates-for-2017

The Internal Revenue Service has issued the 2017 optional standard mileage rates to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

Beginning Jan. 1, standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

• 53.5 cents per mile for business miles driven, down from 54 cents for 2016;

• 17 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, down from 19 cents for 2016;

• 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

The business mileage rate decreased half a cent per mile and the medical and moving expense rates each dropped 2 cents per mile from 2016. The charitable rate is set by statute and remains unchanged.

“Factors contributing to the decision on this year’s slight decrease in the Safe Harbor reimbursement rate include declining fuel prices, which were largely offset by rising vehicle insurance and maintenance costs,” said Donna Koppensteiner, senior vice president of business development at Runzheimer, a business vehicle, relocation information and expense management services provider that provided data research and analytics to the IRS.

The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs.

The IRS reiterated that taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates. A taxpayer may not use the business standard mileage rate for a vehicle after using any depreciation method under the Modified Accelerated Cost recovery System (MACRS), or after claiming a Section 179 deduction for that vehicle. In addition, the business standard mileage rate cannot be used for more than four vehicles used simultaneously.

These and other requirements are in Rev. Proc. 2010-51. Notice 2016-79 contains the standard mileage rates,

THINK BRISBANE — BE ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE!

INTRODUCING OUR NEW SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERSBY: KAREN LENTZ, Brisbane Elementary School District Board President

At the last BESD Board meeting on December 7th, we were pleased to introduce our two newest Board members, Lillian Markind and Jacque McLaughlin.

Trustee Markind is recent co-President of the Lipman PTO. A substitute teacher in our District, she learned first-hand about our curriculum and teaching philosophy. Trustee Markind was born and raised in New Jersey, went to college in Rochester, NY, and has lived in a variety of places including NYC, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin and San Francisco. She worked as a technical educator in the biotech industry. A mother of two children in our District schools, she enjoys being in the classroom and helping out any

way she can. Active in the Brisbane community, she is on the Board of the Brisbane Dance Workshop and a member of the Complete Streets and Safety Committee. She enjoys hiking San Bruno Mountain and going to Giants games with her husband. Says Trustee Markind, “I look forward to working with the other Board members, Superintendent Collver, and the fantastic faculty and staff of our District as we continue to improve public education for all of our students.”

Trustee McLaughlin is a former Lipman PTO President, and the mother of two children who were educated K-8 in our District. She has been on the boards of Silverspot Preschool, Millbrae Nursery School and the Brisbane Dance Workshop, and was a member of the site council at Brisbane Elementary. Part of the “Renew the Arts” parcel tax subcommittee in 2006, she chaired the committee in 2011. Jacque has a master’s degree in fine arts and is a Creative Director for a medical communications agency in San Francisco.

She enjoys spending her free time with her family, walking her dogs with friends, gardening, cooking, swimming, live music, theatre and reading. Says Trustee McLaughlin, “I will encourage strong collaboration between schools and parents to support children’s education, commit to supporting professional development for teachers and staff, and make it a priority to maintain and upgrade school facilities in our District.”

Please join me in welcoming Trustees Markind and McLaughlin to the School Board! With our new Board in place, we announce our 2017-2018 Board of Trustees:

• Karen Lentz, President

• Roxana Hui, Vice-President

• Lillian Markind, Clerk

• Jacque McLaughlin

• Kima Hayuk

We look forward to a productive two years of working hard to provide the best education possible to our District students by supporting our wonderful staff. As we break for the holidays, we wish you and yours all of the best!

Lillian Markind Brisbane school board trustee.

Jacque Mclaughlin [with husband Roel Funke] Brisbane school board trustee.
