President Bush and Colin Powell selected Zinni as special envoy for the U.S. to Israel and the Palestinian Authority to try to negotiate a cease-fi re and peace settlement between the two sides. Zinni has been an outspoken critic of war in Iraq and post-battle planning. Before the invasion, Zinni said the U.S. forces risked entering a “Bay of Goats”, a reference to the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. Since the war he has widely been quoted with ten criticisms of the rationale and execution of the war, which include: the war planners “misjudged the success of containment”; the “strategy was fl awed” - the strategy of invading, occupying, and setting up a new government in Iraq would help solve the broader confl ict in the Middle East; the administration “had to create a false rationale for going in to get public support”; the war planners failed “to internationalize the effort”; underestimating the task of creating a free, democratic and functional Iraq; propping up and trusting the exiles such as the Iraqi National Congress and Ahmed Chalabi; lack of planning for the post-war stabilization and reconstruction of Iraq; and insuffi cient military forces on the ground. Zinni is also a Purple Heart recipient. Zinni will discuss the realities on the ground and answer your questions.

4/25 Efraim Halevy. Israel’s Mossad is thought by many to be one of the most powerful and secre-tive intelligence agencies in the world. Efraim Halevy—a Mossad offi cer since 1961 and its chief between 1998 and 2002— will provide an unprecedented portrait of the Middle East crisis. Having served as the secret envoy of prime ministers Rabin, Shamir, Netanyahu, Barak, and Sharon, Halevy was privy to many of the top-level negotiations that determined the progress of the region’s struggle for peace during the years when the threat of terror became increasingly powerful. Informed by his extraordinary access, he will provide the Society a rare portrait of the Mossad, the prime ministers he served under, and the other major players on the international stage: Yasir Arafat, Saddam Hussein, Hafi z al-Assad, Mu’amar Gadhafi , and presidents Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush. From the vantage point of a chief in charge of one of the largest, secretive and most powerful intelligence organizations in the world, Halevy will discuss at the Society the diffi culty of running an intelligence agency in a time when heads of state are immersed, as never before, in using intelligence to protect their nations while, at the same time, acting to protect themselves politically. Halevy will also talk about how the world might achieve peace in the face of the growing threat from terrorist organizations. This will be a one of a kind event where Halevy opens his private dossier on events past and present: the negotiations surrounding the Israeli-Jordan Peace Accord and its importance for the stability of the region; fi gures in the CIA, like George Tenet, with who he worked (Halevy will also share his feelings about Tenet’s abrupt resignation); what really occurred behind the scenes with Black September, which Stephen Spielberg’s fi lm Munich portrays. Halevy will discuss the truth about what the Mossad really knew before 9/11, assess the threat of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the region and beyond, what this spells for the future of international stability and survival, the increasing visibility of the CIA in the Middle East, and the terrorist at-tacks in New York, London, and Madrid and their far reaching effects. This will be a widely talked about event by the man who wielded his infl uence, in the shadows, to save the Middle East and the world from a never-ending cycle of violence and destruction.

APRIL (continued)

With the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was National Security Advisor Scowcroft who coined the term and laid the foundation of the “New World Order.” He co-wrote, “A World Transformed” with President George H.W. Bush. Few leaders in modern history have the combination of experience and expertise in foreign policy and national security affairs as Brent Scowcroft.

Pinkett won in Donald Trump’s the Apprentice television show in the most controversial season. Pinkett holds fi ve degrees, is a former championship track and fi eld athlete, and has been featured in national publications as a future leader.

6/19 Joe Klein. Joe Klein, the legendary journalist and best-selling author of the critically ac-claimed novel Primary Colors, that caused the nation to go into a frenzied guessing game of who the anonymous author was. Primary Colors was the New York Times number one best-selling book and thinly-veiled portrayal of Bill Clinton’s fi rst presidential campaign. The book was made into a Hollywood blockbuster with John Travolta, Emma Thompson, Billy Bob Thorton and directed by Mike Nichols.

Klein is considered one of the top journalists in the United States and was bureau chief of News-week, and columnist for New Yorker, New York, Washington Post, and now one of the premier journalists at Time magazine. He is a frequent guest on Larry King Live, Chris Matthews, and Charlie Rose news programs.

Klein’s most recent book is called, Politics Lost: How American Democracy Was Trivialized By People Who Think You’re Stupid. It cleverly analyzes the political handlers responsible for today’s bland, prefabricated candidates, carefully stage-managed campaigns and vacuous, focus-grouped policy proposals. Klein traces the political consultants’ infl uence through pungent insider accounts of presidential campaigns from 1968 to the present. He discusses the deadening of American political culture and celebrates the few politicians, like Ronald Reagan and John McCain, who occasionally slip the consultants’ leash, blurt out an unfashionable opinion, take a principled stand or otherwise demonstrate their unvarnished humanity.

6/29 Al Sharpton. Reverend Al Sharpton is a minister, a political and civil rights activist, and fi lm actor. Sharpton ran for the Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States in 2004. Sharpton has also run for the United States Senate and Mayor of New York City. Sharpton formed the National Action Network in 1991 to fi ght for progressive, popular-based social policies by providing extensive voter education and registration campaigns, and economic support for small community businesses. That same year, Sharpton was stabbed in an assassination attempt in a Bensonhurst. Eventually, he met and reconciled with his attacker. Sharpton has appeared in Spike Lee’s movie Malcolm X, and in episodes of television shows New York Undercover, Law & Order, Special Victims Unit, and Boston Legal. During the 2005 Tony Awards, Sharpton appeared in a number put on by the cast of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Sharpton has also hosted the late-night comedy show Saturday Night Live. Sharpton has also recorded the album God Smiled on Me with James Brown.

SEPTEMBER9/6 Former Secretary of Defense under Bill Clinton, William Cohen. Former Secretary of Defense under Bill Clinton, William S. Cohen, is an authority on world politics and American government.Secretary Cohen is one of the most respected Defense Secretaries in the history of the United States. He commands respect from both sides of the political aisle.

Signifi cant events in U.S. defense history during William Cohen’s tenure as Secretary of Defense include: the largest defense spending increase in 15 years, NATO enlargement with three new democracies, military to military ties with China, and reduced nuclear weapons in Russia. Under his leadership, the U.S. military conducted the largest air warfare campaign since World War II, in Bosnia and Kosovo, and conducted other military operations on every continent. During his tenure, Secretary Cohen held substantive meetings with foreign leaders in over 60 countries. He strengthened security relationships with countries around the world in order to reorient them from the Cold War to the challenges of a new era. Secretary Cohen also accomplished the cre-ation of the Joint Forces Command for foreign threats and the Joint Task Force for Civil Support to create a state of readiness in homeland defense for domestic threats such as terrorism. As he left offi ce, Cohen cautioned that Russia, China, asymmetric warfare, and weapons of mass de-struction were issues likely to confront incoming Bush administration national security offi cials.

From his very fi rst days in Washington, Secretary Cohen was singled out as a future Ameri-can leader. In 1974, during his very fi rst term in Congress, Time magazine named him as one of “America’s 200 Future Leaders. Elected to Congress in 1972, he served three terms in the House of Representatives and won election to the Senate in 1978, and re-election in 1984 and 1990. A moderate Republican, he served on both the Senate Armed Services and Governmental Affairs Committees, and was a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence for a decade, serving half that time as Vice Chairman, overseeing a large budget involving some of the nation’s most ad-vanced technology. As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aging, Secretary Cohen led efforts to improve the effi ciency of Medicare and other health care programs and was a central player in the health care reform debates of the 1990s.

JULY7/14 Ralph Fiennes. Critics consider Ralph Fiennes to be one of the top actors in the world. Fiennesmight be best known as Lord Voldemott in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Fiennes will also be in the 2007 release of the new Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Fiennes received critical reviews and an Oscar nomination for his horrifying yet complexly human portrayal of Amon Goeth, commandant of the Nazi concentration camp at Plaszow, in Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed epic Schindler’s List. In the English Patient, Fiennes and his co-star Juliette Binoche also received Academy Award nominations for their performances. Fiennes also starred in The End of the Affair with Juliana Moore, and in Robert Redford’s Quiz Show. Most recently Fiennes appeared in John Le Care’s The Constant Gardener, playing a kind, genial British diplomat in Africa who is shaken out his complacency when his beloved, politically outspoken wife is murdered amid suspicious and sordid circumstances, prompting him to try to tear open the secret conspiracy she was investigating. Fiennes played a blind man in the Ismail Merchant’s last fi lm, the White Countess. And recently was a leading voice in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Fiennes won a 1995 Tony Award for his portrayal of Hamlet, and this year he was nominated for another Tony for his performance in Faith Healer.

His experience and expertise led to his selection to serve on the “Iran-Contra Committee.” His sustained leadership on environmental issues gave him the distinction of being the only Republican Senator endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters re-election after re-election, while his efforts on behalf of small business and early leadership in reversing federal defi cits won him awards from the National Federation of Independent Businessmen and the National Taxpayers Union. In 1996, widely expected to easily defeat whomever would be nominated to challenge him in the Senate, Secretary Cohen stunned Maine and Washington by announcing he would not seek re-election. Frustrated with partisan gridlock, Secretary Cohen decided he would return to private life to promote international business and, through his writings and the media, a more thoughtful public discourse on national political issues.

President Clinton interrupted these plans, however, when he asked Secretary Cohen to lead the Department of Defense, the fi rst time in modern U.S. history when a President had chosen an elected offi cial from the other party to be a member of his cabinet. At his January 1997 confi rmation hearing, Secretary Cohen set forth his prioritized objectives as Secretary of Defense and completed his tenure having accomplished them all. After 31 years of public service, Secretary Cohen has a record of unparalleled accomplishment, integrity, and respect, and takes with him unrivaled knowledge, reputation, and relationships across America and around the globe.

9/12 Ed McMahon. For nearly 30 years Ed McMahon played sidekick to Johnny Carson on the late-night hit The Tonight Show. McMahon introduced the show with a drawn-out “Heeeeeeeeeeeeeere’s Johnny!” His booming voice and constant laughter earned him the nick-name the Human Laugh Track.

Their edition of the show ran from 1962 to 1992, making both men household names. In the 1990s McMahon was introduced to a new generation via Phil Hartman’s impersonations on Saturday Night Live. And in later years joined Dick Clark as a pitchman for the American Family Publishers sweepstakes. McMahon is a longtime co-host of the annual Jerry Lewis telethon for muscular dystrophy.

He has recently authored a memoir Here’s Johnny!: My Memories of Johnny Carson, The Tonight Show, and 46 Years of Friendship. McMahon is the only person who was with Johnny Carson, even before The Tonight Show, when they both fi rst appeared on Who Do You Trust. With Johnny’s blessing before he died, McMahon can fi nally share all the stories that only he knows. From the sofa at Johnny’s right, to backstage, to their personal relationship - McMahon will provide a real view of the man who was so careful to only show one side of himself to the public. Brilliant in front of the camera, but shy in person, Carson seldom gave interviews. Only McMahon can tell the stories and provide the insights into the personality that made Johnny Carson more of a friend we invited into our home than a television star.

9/13 Lanny Davis. Lanny Davis served as Special Counsel to President Clinton and in that position served as the White House spokesperson for various congressional campaign fi nance investigations and other “scandal” allegations against the Clinton Administration. Davis’s memoir of his work as President Clinton’s crisis communicator was published in 1999 and titled, Truth to Tell: Tell It Early, Tell It All, Tell It Yourself.: Notes From My White House Education. offi cials and journalists alike. It’s an instructive and cautionary tale of the constant struggle to know the truth of what is going on at the highest degree of government.”

Davis’s latest book is called Scandal: How “Gotcha” Politics Is Destroying America. For more than four decades, politics in America has been driven by a vicious scandal machine comprised of partisan politicians, extremists on the left and right, and the media. Lanny Davis, who has beenin the belly of the beast as Special Counsel to the Clinton White House, tackles the issue of “gotcha” politics and its deteriorating effect on our government. Davis covers historical scandals like Alexander Hamilton’s extramarital affairs and moves forward to today— how American politics has been reduced to the politics of personal destruction. He explains how this poisonous atmosphere is damaging not just politics but American society. He reveals a coalition of centrist politicians who focus on core policies rather than the missteps of the other party, and how this group and others like them can pull America back from the brink. Davis is a regular on CNN’s “Late Edition,” NBC’s “Meet the Press,” ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Fox New Channel’s O’Reilly Factor, and MSNBC’s Brian Williams Hour. He is often featured in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Wall Street Journal. Davis will appear on Bill O’Reilly’s Fac-tor right before addressing the Oxonian Society.

This will be a fascinating event and analysis from one of the highest-ranking offi cials in the Clinton administration, before the upcoming mid-term and presidential elections.

“Lanny Davis has shown he understands the dangers from the left and right of the politics of personal destruction.” —Senator Joe Lieberman (D-CT)

“This book could not come at a more appropriate time in American political life. . . Lanny Davis has been on the front lines of some of the sharpest political debates in our nation’s history. We should listen—Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

OCTOBER10/3 Ed Rollins. Ed Rollins has long been known as one of America’s premiere political strategists and communications experts. He directed the most successful Presidential campaign in the history of the United States, serving as President Ronald Reagan’s 1984 National Campaign Director. He also ran Ronald Reagan’s 1981 campaign. Rollins has worked for seven American presidents. Along with his work at the top levels in the White House, Rollins has ridden high and low.

Rollins will provide a wealth of juicy and humorous information, which he is willing to share--holding nothing back, including the weirdness and running the Ross Perot Presidential campaign. Rollins will also analyze and provide a behind the scenes look at the upcoming mid-term elections, where the Senate and House of Representative might change the balance of power. Rollins will discuss why President Reagan is considered by analysts and the public to have been the great communicator and insights into his high-level interactions with President Regan.

He is the author of Bare Knuckles and Back Rooms, a revealing look at Washington’s power games and the backstage of several campaigns he has managed in his more than 30 years in politics.

If you are interested in an insider’s view of the Presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan and Ross Perot, the upcoming mid-term elections, winning public opinion, and managing a media crisis, this event is not to be missed.

10/9 Andy Summers. Andy Summers with Sting and Stewart Copeland formed the Police, one of the most successful and infl uential bands in music history. The Police sold over 75 million records and garnered fi ve Grammy awards.

Summers met Sting and Stewart Copeland in 1977; together, the trio gradually developed a style centered on jazz and reggae-infl uenced pop/rock. Summers help compose some of the most successful albums in music history including the Police’s Synchronicity, Ghost in the Machine, Zenyatta Mondatta, Regatta De Blanc, and Outlandos D’Amour.

In March 2003 Summers—already in the guitar Player Hall of Fame—along with cohorts Sting and Stewart Copeland was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Before forming the Police, Summers was a member of Eric Burdon’s famed band the New Animals. In 1969, Summers took time away from the world of rock bands to study classical guitar and composition at UCLA for four years, supporting these activities by teaching music, performing with LA bands and acting with various theatre troupes. Upon his return to England at the end of 1973 he re-entered the London music scene to quickly establish himself as a premier guitarist.

After the Police Summers established himself in musical realms outside of rock & roll and composed several fi lm soundtracks (Down and Out in Beverly Hills, 2010, Weekend at Bernie’s, etc.). While Summers is best known as the guitarist of the Police (1977-86), he has since forged a successful and acclaimed solo career with contemporary instrumental music that, like his work with Sting and Stewart Copeland, draws on his love for jazz, world, classical music and his fascination with creating sonic textures. Summers with the New Composers Orchestra recently played Carnegie Hall and continues to show his critically acclaimed photography exhibitions around the world.

Summers has fi nally composed his long awaited autobiography One Train Later, which is a memoir on a life that began in gloomy 1940s Bournemouth, England and progressed to an illustrious, globe trotting music career. The Edge of U2 wrote the foreword, since Summers has had a major impact on the Edge’s musical career.

Five Oxford scholars (a fi ne artist, astrophysicist, philosopher, mathematician and biochemist) all quickly realize that a sharpened pencil and straight A’s are of little use when the gloves are on and violence reigns.

With war raging between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Mid-East in crisis, and mounting causalities and displacement of civilians, Ambassador Arye Mekel of Israel will address the Oxonian Society and provide an in-depth analysis, possible solutions how the never-ending bloodshed can end, and answer audience questions. This is the fi rst time that missiles are striking major Israeli cities such as Haifa and the holy city of Nazareth that was home to Jesus. The child of Holocaust survivors, Arye Mekel was born in the former Soviet Union in 1946. Ambassador Mekel served as Foreign Policy Advisor to Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir (1986-1989) and Director General of the Israel Broadcasting Authority, responsible for all State television and radio (1989-1993).

Senator Dorgan pulls no punches and will offer a bold, refreshing strategy for putting the United States back on track. Senator Dorgan is a member of the Senate Leadership and has served in the U.S. Congress for over twenty-four years.

Senator Dorgan will discuss the one white building on Church Street in the Cayman Islands’ capital that is the offi cial “home” to 12,748 U.S. corporations, alarming trade defi cits with China, Japan, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Korea, and the link between oil trade and terrorism.

Senator Dorgan says for generations to come, we will be paying for this folly unless immediate and swift action takes place. Few leaders in Washington have emerged with as clear a voice or as coherent a strategy as Senator Dorgan.

The Washington Post says that Senator Dorgan is “a populist straight from the traditions of the William Langer and Hubert Humphrey.” And the New York Times says he “sets an example for political statesmanship.”
