Looking back at 2015

In front of you is the last newsletter of 2015. I must take this opportunity to look back at last year shortly and look ahead at the new year as well. 2015 was a dynamic year. A year in which we intensified our network extensively.

To me, one of the highlights of 2015 was the official kick-off of the project ‘Omalief’ in Amersfoort. A project in which Dutch-Turkish young people visit Dutch seniors on a weekly basis to talk to them, run some errands, take a walk or simply drink a cup of tea together. I consider this beautiful initiative, initiated in Leiden by Mustafa Kus, heart-warming and inspiring. Generations find each other, cultures look for a connection, bridge gaps and are an added value to our society. ‘Omalief’ counters loneliness, prejudice and misunderstandings. In a certain way it is a symbol for the work of the Honorary Consulate-General. In essence, our work is about the connection between the Turkish- and Dutch culture, bridging gaps, inspiring people and bringing parties together. All the people I meet due to our work, form a valuable network. Through this network, last year we supported Turkish- and Dutch entrepreneurs in doing business with- or in Turkey and (medical) students in finding educational internships in Turkish top clinics. Furthermore, we exchanged culture in several ways and matched Dutch students through internships to companies for market research in Turkey.

Currently we are working on a business plan for 2016 and we are looking forward to establishing even more relations between the Netherlands and Turkey, bridging more gaps and inspiring even more people.

On behalf of my colleagues Joni van Loon, Ingrid Hensbroek, Laura Geerlings and myself, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones happy holidays and a healthy, joyful and successful 2016!

Turkish translation agency in Rotterdam

Neşe Dogan is Turkey expert and mediator at Turksvertaler.nl in Rotterdam. In an interview she tells us about the company that she founded in 2006 together with her business partner.

What kind of company is Turksvertaler.nl?It is a translation- and consultancy company, specialised in interpreting and translating from- and to Turkish. Ever since 2006, Turksvertaler.nl provides interpreters and supervisors for EU-programs for delegations from Turkey. We are very proud of that.

About which subjects does the agency provide consultancy services?Since 2009 we have a Turkey Desk and guide companies with their business in Turkey or in their search for a business partner. Moreover, we can provide support while searching for an alliance office, starting your own business, founding a new company or taking part in an existing Turkish company. We assist companies in legalizing documents, visa, and other consular affairs.

On which target group is Turksvertaler.nl focussing? Our target group predominantly consists of a diverse group of SME’s that want to do business in Turkey, owners of a summer home and tourists.

The company started as a translation agency. Why did you add consultancy to your services? We started as a translation agency in the centre of Rotterdam, opposite the Turkish Consulate. It turned out to be a perfect location: clients knew where to find us for their translation tasks. The company grew and our clients gradually started to ask us for advice. I studied business administration and therefore my knowledge and skills came in very handy.

You have a coach via a project of the Dutch Dream Foundation? We wanted to expand our company effectively. A friend of mine who was a fellow student introduced me to DDF to take part in the coaching program ‘Dare to Have a Dream’. I received useful tips and good advice.

What differentiates your company from the competition?Due to the short lines of communication with the Turkish Consulate-General, we gained a lot of experience and an extensive network. Moreover, we also know where to find other institutions and authorities in both the Netherlands and Turkey.

What are your ambitions for the future? The Turkish economy and the tourist sector have been showing impressive growth rates and consequently experience increasing interest of Dutch companies and tourists. We want to be a trustworthy partner for our clients with regard to translating documents, guiding Turkish-Dutch delegations, interpreting services and supporting Dutch companies that want to do business in Turkey. It is our aim to guide- and unburden our clients completely.

Update sustainable energy sector Turkey

Turkey attempts to draw in investors via favourable measures in order to increase the number of sustainable energy sources. According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources an investment of 110 billion dollars is required to meet the growing demand for energy in 2023. This is more than twice the investments of the past 10 years.

The rapid urbanisation, the positive demographic developments, the economic expansion and the increasing income per capita are the most important reasons for the growing demand for energy. The estimated annual growth of the demand for energy until 2023 is between 4 and 6 percent. The Turkish government has made it their priority to increase the share of sustainable energy to 30 percent of the total.

Hello Ivar en Angélo, where are you?

For the section ‘Hello, where are you?’ Joni van Loon interviewed Ivar Blanken and Angélo Blanken-Rutten who live in Istanbul. Ivar is Unilever CFO for Turkey as well as the region North-Africa, Middle-East, Central-Asia and Russia. Angelo is Quality, Health & Safety and Environment country manager Turkey for ELC Group, part of Royal Haskonig DHV.

Good afternoon Ivar and Angélo, where are you?“Ivar is in Istanbul today, but he travels a lot. We both live on the European side and work on the Asian side; Ivar in Umraniye and I work in Kavicik.

How did you in end up in Istanbul?“Unilever operates in many countries, which gives us the opportunity to experience several countries and cultures. As a family we started in the Netherlands and via Greece and the United States we ended up in Istanbul. We did not have any previous experience with the country, but we did know some expats in Istanbul who we met in Greece earlier.”

What are your work activities?Ivar: “As CFO, I am responsible for the finance department of Unilever in Turkey and for one of the eight regions of Unilever as well. In Turkey, Unilever has a turnover of approximately 1.2 billion euros and 4.5 billion euros in the region.”

Angeló: “As QHSE country manager I try to adapt the methods of the local company to the methods in the Netherlands and the UK. During my first year I was partially responsible for international certification regarding QHSE. Currently I am helping ELC with applying to international tenders and substantially I am contributing to projects in the Netherlands.”

Any projects in particular?Ivar: “Turkey is a growth market for Unilever. The company invests in a new factory in Konya for household- and personal care products. It is one of the biggest investments of Unilever worldwide.”

Follow-up: Hello Ivar and Angélo, where are you?

Angélo: “For Royal Haskonig DHV Turkey is a growth market as well. We execute a lot of ‘environmental and social impact assessments’ from our office for large projects like the building of hospitals and harbour constructions, tunnels and pipelines.”

Do you visit the Netherlands often?Angélo: “Until recently we visited the Netherlands every summer and Christmas. When the children were younger, we often rented a house and stayed there for a couple of weeks. Now however, our visits last no longer than a week.

What is your favourite leisure activity in Istanbul?Angélo: “I like to take walks along the Bosporus or the beach in Kilyos. Unfortunately, these activities are quite rare at the moment. Before I had a job, I searched for all kinds of unexplored places in Istanbul, together with a friend of mine. We would take the metro to the city and walk for hours through the different neighbourhoods. We challenged each other to find the most unsightly restaurant, and enjoy the most delicious meals for as little money as possible. I like going to restaurants in Istanbul with Ivar. There are many options and the quality is so high! Furthermore, our family is a member of the Zekeriyakoy tennis club where we play tennis the whole year round.”

Ivar: “Since a few years I am into endurance sports, together with a group of Dutch people. Besides triathlons and the half Ironman, we swam the Bosporus Race and the passage of Meis in Greece to Kas in Turkey.”

What makes Istanbul so special to you?Ivar: “Our Turkish colleagues and friends! They are kind-hearted and welcoming and at the same time very hardworking and capable.”

Angélo: “We often talk about this: how special it is to live in Istanbul. Nowhere else will you find such friendly and caring people. Recently my car broke down at a busy traffic junction. A local salesman came up to me and stopped traffic, so that I could drive slowly towards a safe parking spot until help arrived. Only in Turkey you find situations like this!”

Turkey in the spotlights during international festival EUROPALIA in Antwerp

In the MAS (‘Museum aan de Stroom’) in Antwerp from 23 October 2015 to 24 January2016 the exhibition ‘ISTANBUL - ANTWERPEN. TWEE HAVENS. TWEE STEDEN.’ can be visited. The exhibition is one of the eye-catchers of the international festival EUROPALIA TURKEY.

Where water and land meet, there are harbours. They are crossings and meeting points. People from all over the world arrive and depart there. They exchange goods, but also ideas and dreams. On these junctions of cultures, cities are formed. This is also the case for Antwerp and Istanbul. Antwerp owes a lot to the river Schelde and the harbour and city of Istanbul developed itself at the Golden Horn, a natural harbour along the river Bosporus.

Multimedia tour along the Bosporus and the ScheldeDuring the exhibition ‘ISTANBUL – ANTWERPEN. TWEE HAVENS. TWEE STEDEN.’ visitors make a multimedia tour along the Bosporus, the Golden Horn and the Schelde. Audio-visual art, archaeological findings and suiting historic objects tell the story of Istanbul and Antwerp. A story with many parallels.

Contemporary artA group of Turkish and Belgian contemporary artists created new work dedicated to this theme. In photos, videos and installations they shed new light on the towers of Istanbul and Antwerp. They focus on the docks, cranes and shipyards in both harbours and guide the visitor over the bridges of the Bosporus and through the tunnels underneath the Schelde.

Archaeological objectsIn addition to these contemporary works, the MAS shows a selection of archaeological objects from the period between the 4th and the 11th century from the oldest harbour of Istanbul, Yenikapi. In the remains of 36 merchant ships, archaeologists found ceramics, coins and glass from Classical antiquity, the Byzantine- and the Ottoman Empire. An eye-catcher is a gigantic chain that was being stretched over the Golden Horn’s entrance to keep hostile ships out.

Internship report medical student Li-Anne Douma: Ophthalmology is a ‘top choice’ An English-speaking doctor, a high-quality hospital and cultural differences were the most important aspects for me regarding an ophthalmology internship abroad. These are the words of Li-Anne Douma, medical student at the University of Utrecht. Via the ‘International Office’ of the UMC Utrecht and the HCG Turkey, I ended up in Istanbul for an internship in the Acibadem Hospital Istanbul, together with fellow student Ruby.

Apartment at a top locationVia the HCG Turkey we were assisted in finding a place to live in Istanbul. Eventually we chose a nice apartment at a top location adjacent to the metro station in the Galata neighbourhood, one of the best neighbourhoods in the city.

Laser treatments and cataract operations The internship in the Maslak Acibadem Hospital at the head of the department, prof. Dr. Banu Cosar, offered us ample learning opportunities. Treatment at the hospital is not included in the national health insurance. The patients were predominantly well-to-do Turks, Arabs and Europeans. The ophthalmologist was very nice and explained us a lot about the patient, the symptoms and the treatment. On a screen we would watch the slit lamp examination, in which the ophthalmologist examines the eye thoroughly. We were allowed to use the slit lamp to practice the examination, watched several laser treatments and a cataract operation on both eyes.

National health insuranceThe second week we followed a young doctor in the Atakent Acibadem Hospital. The patients visit this hospital for treatments that are included in the national health insurance. The patients consisted of many premature infants and young children with diverse and interesting ocular defects. The doctor was friendly, spoke English well and involved us in his patients.

Ophthalmology is a ‘top choice’Dr. Celeb had long working days and approximately 30 patients per day. He explained a lot, answered our questions, let us look through the slit lamp and helped us.

Follow-up: Internship report medical student Li-Anne Douma

We learned a lot about the Turkish culture and its health care system. Medical students participate in a national test after their graduation, and based on a ranking system they choose a specialty. Ophthalmology is a ‘top choice’.

Rich cultureThe doctors gave us opportunities to explore Istanbul as well: a beautiful, modern city with a rich culture and very different neighbourhoods. It was quite remarkable to us that every place in Istanbul has its own centre. This emphasized the size of Istanbul, a city with approximately just as many residents as the Netherlands in total. We enjoyed the delicious food, the nice weather and the lovely, caring people.

Open mindThe internship exceeded our expectations in a way we could never imagine. I did not know what to expect and started the internship with an open mind. We saw many rare pathologies, practised a lot with the slit lamp and the fundoscopy, and that was a very educational experience.
