WELCOME
On behalf of The American Turkish Society, I would like to welcome you to the sixth of our annual gala dinners, celebrating milestones in U.S.-Turkish business relations and honoring the extraordinary business leaders who create them.
This year, we are celebrating the joint venture of Time Warner and Doğan Holding in CNN Türk, the first television channel in Turkey co-founded with a foreign media company, and honoring Mr. Philip I. Kent and Ms. Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındağ for their vision at the helm of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and Doğan TV Holding A.Ş., respectively.
Tonight’s event is made even more special by the gracious participation of Gala Co-Chairs Ms. Christiane Amanpour and Mr. Donald J. Trump, who both follow Turkey closely and have a significant impact on the ties between our two countries.
The Society’s past gala dinners highlighted the partnerships of Ford Motor Company and Koç Holding; Citi and Sabancı Holding; GE and Doğuş Group; The Coca-Cola Company and Anadolu Group; and New York Stock Exchange and Turkcell. With business relations between our two countries growing ever stronger, we will continue to showcase such success stories in the years to come.
Your generous support tonight and throughout the year provides the critical resources to sustain our mission since 1949: to enhance business, diplomatic, and cultural ties between Turkey and the United States. We convene leaders and experts to inform the U.S. public about Turkey’s current affairs, foreign policy, and economy and provide life-changing educational and cultural opportunities. We are proud of our expansion through our arts & culture division Moon and Stars Project, exemplified by our groundbreaking retrospective at the Film Society of Lincoln Center last spring. Another new, high-impact program is our “Young Society Leaders,” which nurtures the next generation of leaders shaping U.S.-Turkish relations.
Once again, we appreciate your participation and, given our shared interest in Turkey, look forward to your continuing involvement in The Society. Murat Köprülü
Chairman, The American Turkish Society
GALA CO-CHAIR’s MEssAGE
Good evening.
I am pleased to join in this celebration of CNN Türk and the partnership that has made it an essential news and information source for millions of people. From its beginnings, the CNN brand around the world has stood for journalistic integrity, freedom and fearlessness. Delivering on that mission requires commitment, and that commitment starts with leadership. I appreciate your recognition of my colleague and friend, Phil Kent, and of his colleague and friend, Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındağ, and with you I wish them continued success.

GALA CO-CHAIR’s MEssAGE
As I have worked with the Doğan family on our beautiful Trump Towers project in the incredible city of Istanbul, I have become more familiar with Turkey, Turkish customs and, of course, Istanbul. I am very proud of our relationship with the Doğan Group and all of us are pleased with the tremendous results of our collaboration in Şişli. Our work together is important as it is a clear indication that doing business in Turkey is good for everyone. I would also like to congratulate Ms. Doğan Yalçındağ and Mr. Kent on their partnership. Turkish-U.S. relations deserve a significant position in the business community and I am pleased to be a part of this relationship. I send my best wishes to everyone and hope the evening will be a wonderful celebration for all.

ARzuHAN DOğAN yALçINDAğ
Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındağ is the chairperson of Doğan TV Holding, the largest broadcasting group in Turkey.
Doğan Yalçındağ started her professional life at Milpa in 1990 to initiate a mail orderbusiness in cooperation with the German firm, Quelle. She was the CEO of the company until 1993. In 1994, she took part in the establishment of Alternatifbank and served as director on its Board until she became the Executive Committee Member in charge of Finance of Milliyet Magazine Group in 1995.
In 1996, Doğan Yalçındağ joined KANAL D, founded in 1993 as one of the first private broadcasting companies in Turkey. She started efforts in 1999 to establish a joint news channel with the Time Warner Group, which produced CNN Türk the following year.
Between 1999 and 2005, Doğan Yalçındağ aimed to build a diversified, integrated and pioneering broadcasting business including TV channels, radios, drama production and music companies. As part of that vision, Doğan TV Holding was established as the parent company of the broadcasting assets and she became the President of the company.
In 2007, Doğan Yalçındağ was elected as the first female Chairperson of the Turkish Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (TUSIAD), an internationally prominent civil society organization founded in 1971 and a member of Business Europe. She chaired the Association from 2007 to 2010 as the third female chairperson in the history of Business Europe.
Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındağ served as the Chairperson of Doğan Holding between 2010 and 2012.
Selected by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader, Doğan Yalçındağ founded the “Women’s Initiative for Turkey in the EU” and was named as the voluntary ambassador. She is a founding member of Women Entrepreneurs Association of Turkey (KAGIDER) and Aydın Doğan Foundation. She is married to Mehmet Ali Yalçındağ and has two sons.
PHILIP I . kENT
Phil Kent is chairman and chief executive officer of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.). He is responsible for a portfolio of news; entertainment; animation, young adult & kids; and sports networks and businesses that includes CNN/U.S., CNN International, CNN Türk, CNN.com and HLN; TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies and truTV; Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Adult Swim; and Turner Sports. Globally, Turner Broadcasting operates more than 130 channels in some 30 languages in more than 200 countries.
Kent was named to his current role in February 2003. Earlier, he served as president and chief operating officer of CNN News Group, where he oversaw a strategic reorganization of the news division. His career at TBS, Inc. also includes broad international experience as president of Turner Broadcasting System International (TBSI), the division overseeing the company’s business activity outside the United States.
Kent joined Turner Broadcasting in 1993 as president of Turner Home Entertainment, the former division comprised of the company’s home video, new media, licensing & merchandising, international theatrical distribution and book publishing operations. Previously, he spent six years with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) as a packaging agent in that company’s television department.
The acquisition in 1970 of Atlanta UHF channel 17 by R.E. “Ted” Turner launched a business, an industry and a string of extraordinary “firsts.” In 1976, the company debuted the first national cable television network and named it The SuperStation. Four years later, Turner Broadcasting invented 24-hour cable news with CNN, one of the world’s most powerful, respected and honored media brands. In 1986, the company acquired the legendary Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film library. The library provided the programming foundation for TNT, which launched in 1988, just as the purchase of Hanna-Barbera Entertainment Co. in 1991 made possible Cartoon Network the following year. Turner Classic Movies, the only commercial-free classic film network, bowed in 1994.
The company grew exponentially during the ‘90s, extending its core news, entertainment and animation brands internationally while creating and acquiring new brands; building a successful home video, book-publishing and film-distribution arm; operating championship professional sports franchises; and dramatically expanding its scale and presence around the world. In 1996, Turner Broadcasting was acquired by Time Warner Inc.
The company’s leadership in digital media, beginning with the signature news and information site CNN.com, has grown to include the creation and management of digital businesses for longtime television content partners the NBA, NASCAR, MLB and the PGA. And Turner’s mobile business interests continue to gain scale in international markets.
In its fifth decade, the company creates and programs branded news, entertainment, animation & young adult and sports media environments on television and other platforms for consumers in more than 200 countries and territories around the world. The passion, creativity and daring that have shaped Turner Broadcasting from its earliest days are alive today in a company that remains a global leader, innovator, partner and one of the great business success stories of our time.
Doğan TV Holding (DTVH) is the largest broadcasting group in Turkey, operating the leading mainstream entertainment channel, KANAL D; the most preferred news channel, CNN Türk; the second largest DTH digital platform, D-SMART; the drama production company, D Production; a music production company, DMC; three national radio stations and many thematic channels.
DTVH reaches millions of Turkish viewers through its own high-quality content, as well as more than 100 million viewers in 73 countries in Eastern Europe, Middle East and Euro Asia through its dramas.
DTVH believes that the core code of media business is creating quality content and distributing it in the best possible way to reach the widest audience.
DTVH dedicates itself to creating quality content for tomorrow’s Media, Entertainment, and Show Businesses and delivering it to a variety of audiences through multiple platforms, including high-technology platforms, which also serve as a medium for communications and marketing industries to deliver their own messages.
Broadcasting assets, one of the core business lines of Doğan Group, have been organized under the Doğan TV Holding.
Doğan Group employs 25,000 people, including 13,000 directly, and provides differentiated services to a broad consumer base in almost every corner of Turkey. Deploying the experience it has gained in Turkey in overseas markets and having established strategic alliances with seven international business groups, Doğan Group currently has operations in 17 countries. Doğan Group is active in six major business areas, among which energy and media receive special focus.
On October 11, 1999, the imagination, dedication and expertise of two leading media companies, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and the Doğan Media Group, combined to launch a new broadcasting endeavour. CNN Türk debuted in the immediate aftermath of the 1999 Istanbul earthquake as the product of the partners’ ambition to deliver a first-class 24-hour Turkish-language news channel.
Since then, CNN Türk has presented breaking news, financial and sports coverage and lifestyle programming reflecting CNN’s signature commitment to independent, impartial journalism, by a team of reporters based in Istanbul and across Turkey. The channel has charted significant world events and provided authoritative coverage of local matters. Whether the Turkish stock market crash of 2001, Orhan Pamuk’s Nobel Prize win of 2006, Prime Minister Erdoğan’s heated encounter with Shimon Peres at the World Economic Forum in 2009 over Gaza or the crowning of Miss Turkey as Miss World in 2002, CNN Türk has reported wide-ranging news accurately and quickly, with context and rigor.
The business also has broken new ground as Turkey’s first and still only television channel with an international partner. In times of global economic challenge, CNN Türk has performed well with and for a range of national and global advertisers. Its distribution encompasses cable, satellite and IPTV, and the brand has spawned robust extensions including CNN Türk radio, cnnturk.com, CNN Türk Smart TV and CNN Türk mobile for iPad, iPhone, Samsung Bada, Nokia Ovi, BlackBerry and Android.
CNN Türk thrives because Turner Broadcasting and Doğan Media Group first dared to dream big. Thirteen years later, it is Turkey’s leading and most-respected news source, complemented by CNN’s peerless global network of newsgathering resources. The CNN Türk partnership represents the power and potential of shared values, mutual respect and local expertise combined with global vision. And it reflects the continuing appetite around the world for quality journalism presented with expertise and without agenda or influence.
