local news A 42-year-old man was left with 10 stitches in his head following an attack outside the Flookersbrook pub, on Hoole Road, last month.Police are not clear as to the motives of the attack which took place at about 11.10pm on Tuesday 16th June. The victim, who received a three inch gash to the back of the head, was taken to the Countessof Chester hospital where he was kept overnight. He has not given police a description of the attacker.Anyone with any information is asked to ring DC Louise Price on 0845 458 000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 458 111.

THERE won’t be a Chesterfest fun day in Hoole this summer. The organisers have put their efforts into a number of activities across the city rather than just concentrating on Hoole. However, from 20th-24th July All Saints Church plays host to over 200 young people and youth leaders. They will be doing free car washing, garden tidying, helping with holiday clubs and sports projects.

HOOLE historian Clive Tolley has written a new book called Shamanism in Norse Myth and magic. The book explains magical practices of pre-Christian times. For more info contact Clive at: [email protected]

HOOLE companies supported Jason Shaw, of the Village Bistro when he hosted a fundraising dinner for Clatterbridge Hospital, recently.

THE Little Carpet Shop, on Long Lane, Upton, has bucked the trend by boosting sales during the downturn.Since the shop opened in September last year, it has seen sales continue to rise.Manager Debbie Bemand said: “We were prepared to work hard to maintain competitive prices and provide an outstanding service that no other shop offers.“We believe that people want to support small independent businesses.”

TEENS HELP OUTTEENS HELP OUT

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 20 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

WHAT a difference a bit of sun makes, these last few weeks as we have seen the temperature rise there is a belief that summer is well and truly here. I am convinced that the weather has a major effect on the psychology of the nation. Wouldn’t it be great if we could guarantee the next couple of months with wall to wall sunshine, we would all feel better and get out of the house – the BBQ would be out every weekend and we would enter into more conversations with our neighbours as we were all out and about much more! However, if we didn’t have the British weather then what would we

talk about? A comment about the weather is the opening line to many conversations and this is due primarily I think, to the fact that in England we can have all 4 seasons in one day, our weather is so changeable. In fact it was only the beginning of the month that we had to turn the heating back on since it was so cold! The truth is that next week we might be back on with the heating! In fact it has been known to snow in June, in Buxton on 2nd June 1975, rudely and infamously affecting a cricket match between Derbyshire and Lancashire at Buxton where early afternoon snow covered the pitch with around an inch of snow. Over the years I’ve been involved in a number of events that have

relied completely on the weather being warm and dry for the event to be successful. On more than one occasion I have offered a heart felt prayer to God to ask that the rain stops and for the sun to break through dark clouds. In particular the Funday on a Sunday that has taken place here in Hoole over the past 10 years has seen the wonderful blessing of sunshine on that particular day when much of the weather in the preceding days and weeks has been wet and miserable! I’ve been asked many times this year if we are holding another Funday in 2009, I’m afraid the

answer is no – instead the organisation that partnered with the 4 Hoole Churches, Chesterfest, has put its energy in helping other churches around the city to organise their own Funday or community event and throughout the summer there have been 4/5 activities in different locations. In Hoole, though, we will still see Chesterfest at work as All Saints plays host to over 200 young people and youth leaders from July 20 to 24. During the afternoons look out for these youngsters in their Chesterfest tee shirts as they engage in CAKE (Community Acts of Kindness Experience) Projects including free car washing, garden tidying, helping with holiday clubs and sports projects. I hope you agree with me that it’s great to see the youth of today involved in

such a positive experience and putting something back in to our community, all to often we only hear bad news about teenagers!! Here in Hoole why don’t you check out the website of the local youth club D’Biz (www.dbiz.org.uk)and have a look at all they get involved in through this club, I’ll think you’ll be surprised to see that the Hoole D’Biz is just one of 11 D’Biz Youth Clubs sponsored by local churches here in Chester!

POOR LAWINSTITUTION(CHESTER CITY HOSPITAL)

THE Chester Union Workhouse was built in 1877/78 by a consortium of parishes neighbouring Chester called the Chester Union. The land on which it was built comprised three large fi elds belonging to the estate of the railway builder Thomas Brassey. The Institution was originally set in 12 acres of land although by the 1930s is incorporated a further 21 acres including land at Littleton. Hoole Park and some of its housing, and the fi eld at the rear of Westminster Road. The buildings themselves were imposing red brick structures built in fi ve blocks to house 500

inmates and cost £38,000. The original gates were at the entrance to housesteads drive, on the right of which at the gateman’s lodge. The drive led up to the main receiving block and boardrooms with the stable block and a casual ward at the rear. The drive went straight through this block by way of a gothic arch to the mail block. The main block, which was later, the main part of the hospital, was characterised by the huge

‘water tower’ in the centre, which was originally topped with a spire and a spike, which would have been seen for many miles. The spike on the spire was a symbol to tramps that refuge was available for one night. The main block also held the dining hall, kitchens, laundry and the boiler house. The exterior of the block hardly changed over its entire life except that the spire was removed and the balconies were added in the early 1920s. These included the infamous ‘jumpers balcony’ of Ward 20 (main block, second fl oor, front left hand side) where many poor souls ended their lives by leaping to their deaths.Behind the main block were the isolation, observation and imbecile wards in four straight parallel

blocks. To the left of the main block was an E shaped building which was originally the Children’s Home and school although later on it became the Nurses’ home. Many other buildings were added over the years and some were demolished. However, only three

survive to this day – the Public Health Laboratory, the ‘new’ offi ce block (n the corner of Lightfoot street) and the workhouse Chapel. The Chapel of St James the Less was built at the same time as the main site. It is situated to the left of the main drive facing out onto Hoole Lane. The brick chapel was consecrated in 1880 with the registers of births and deaths dating back to the same year. The burial sites are on the east and south sides with Catholics interred on the Northern side. The graveyard, which is offi cially called the Chester Union Cemetery, closed in 1900. The number of interments from August 1880 to November 1900 total 1,350 people. They are buried in paupers graves of around four at a time although there are a couple of mass burials when there was an epidemic.

WORK has begun on a project to extend Chester’s Millennium Greenway to Guilden Sutton and Mickle Trafford for everyday journeys for people travelling by foot and by bike. The 16 week scheme is funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) as part of REVIVE – the project which aims to reclaim 170 hectares of brownfield land in Cheshire and Warrington. The works will be completed in October and will create a largely traffic – free link from Chester through to North Wales. This will form part of Sustrans Connect2 project as funded by the Big Lottery Fund to create 79 walking and cycling networks across the UK. The Chester scheme will provide three kilometres (just under two miles) of new traffic – free greenway including a new pedestrian bridge over the Chester to Manchester railway line as well as a series of links and access points. These will be situated in Fairfield Road, Mannings Lane (South), the A41 at Greenfield Lane, an access point near Guilden Sutton and Station Lane, Mickle Trafford.“This long-awaited scheme joining Guilden Sutton and Mickle Trafford is excellent news for local people who I am sure will make good use of these new link – ups” said Cheshire West and Chester Environment Executive Member Neil Ritchie.“People will soon be able to reach the centre of Chester from these two villages by an entirely car – free route.”The first phase of the existing Millennium Greenway was completed in 1999 and runs between Deeside, North Wales to Chester.Aftercare maintenance for the Guilden Sutton and Mickle Trafford project will be provided for 15 years through the environmental charity Sustrans which will also manage the route.Hoole resident Audrey Hodgkinson, from Friends of the Millennium Greenway, said: “We’re delighted with this announcement. It’s wonderful news.“The greenway is used by so many people and this extension will encourage even greater usage.”

HEALTH AND BEAUTYQ. I have unwanted facial hairs. Is electrolysis

permanent?A. Yes it most certainly is! However, there

are a variety of factors which infl uence the effectiveness of electrolysis. Firstly, the skill of the operator – electrolysis is a very skilled technique which takes a long time to perfect so always visit a well-qualifi ed and experienced practitioner for this treatment. Secondly, ‘permanent’ should not be confused with ‘instant’ – many people assume that the treatment will quickly solve their hair growth problems, but electrolysis does take time to be effective so be patient and stick to your treatment plan as advised by your therapist. Thirdly, the cause of your hair growth problems and how you have been removing the hairs previously will have an enormous infl uence on how effective the treatment is so ensure that you visit a practitioner who takes the time to carry out a consultation process to fully understand your problem and gives you a realistic likely outcome of the treatments.

Q. I fi nd that now I am older if I wear mascara on my lower eyelashes by the end of the day the mascara is smudged under my eyes. What can I do to prevent this?A. The obvious answer would be to wear a

waterproof and smudgeproof mascara, but these can be damaging for your eyelashes if worn too frequently. You have probably found that as you are ageing your lower eyelashes are becoming more sparse anyway and wearing mascara often just highlights the fact that you have fewer eyelashes. I would always recommend using an eye pencil applied carefully very close to the lower lashes instead of mascara to give the illusion of a full lower lash line. The pencil can be ‘set’ by running a small amount of dark brown matte eyeshadow with a fi ne brush to prevent the pencil from creeping down your face over the course of the day. If you are unsure about applying this technique visit your local beauty salon for an eye makeup lesson.

JULY IN YOUR GARDENGardening by Janet Heath

HOPEFULLY this summer will be sunny so we can enjoy our gardens whether it is dining outside or just lounging about in the sun. Some herbs are great for adding to summer cooking. Mint is wonderful when added to Pimms

and lemonade or pop a sprig in the pan when cooking new potatoes or peas. There are many different varieties of mint but grow in a pot or confi ned to an area where it can be contained, as many of them will invade your garden. In the vegetable garden, plant out winter leeks and brassicas such as broccoli and sprouts. Sow

salads and French beans for a late crop. Do net fruit such as strawberries and blueberries. I tried to grow blueberries last year and had a crop developing nicely until the birds ate every one just before they ripened! Raspberries seem to be largely immune probably as the fruit is not so easy for birds to eat. July is a great month for perennials and many come in bright colours so take a trip to your local

garden centre or visit some of our wonderful gardens to see what is doing well in July. Achilleas are sun-loving fl owering plants that come in a range of colours from yellow, orange

and red. Anthemis with yellow or white daisy fl owers will continue into August or even September if you cut off the dead fl owers. Crocosmia are also at their best in July with their sword shaped leaves and spikes of red, yellow or orange fl owers. They may well need some support. Cooler colours of white and blue often come to life in the evening and seem to have an inner

glow in fading light. Try white dahlias with their varied fl ower shapes. Many hardy geraniums have white or blue fl owers and some varieties will often fl ower twice if the fi rst fl owers are cut off after fl owering. The same also applies to Centaurea Montana the perennial cornfl ower. Hydrangreas are one of the best shrubs for fl owering in July with a range of fl ower shapes from

delicate lacecap to huge mopheads and some with cones shaped fl owers. They prefer moist soil and will take light shade but will also grow in full sun. Give them enough space to grow. They fl ower on last years wood so if you cut them back, you may not have fl owers the next year.
