Welcome to the Killearn Hoolie 2014

There are several big events in 2014 but for us the biggest is the third Killearn Hoolie with eight great days of frolics, fun and festivities! Building on the huge success of the previous two events, this year’s Hoolie promises to be bigger and better. All the most popular elements are returning, plus a few new ones, so we can guarantee everyone will be able to join in the fun. Unfortunately we can’t guarantee the weather, so fingers crossed that the sun shines on the week’s events.

You’ll find details of our fantastic new events in the following pages. Ones to watch out for include The Hoolie Mile Fun Run – with fancy dress optional (I’ll be the one dressed as Minnie Mouse), Hoolie Hide and Seek, The Wee Fling – a child-friendly family ceilidh – and the Great Hoolie Bake-Off. Throughout the week a series of associated events will take place – all listed in this programme, or see our website at www.killearnhoolie.com or our Facebook page for the latest news.

The Gala Day itself will offer entertainment for all the family, ranging from Birds of Prey, the Climbing Wall, and a 14th-century battle, to food outlets and the Hoolie Market to mention but a few... so come along and bring your friends.

The Final Fling will round off an amazing week. With delicious food and great entertainment this fantastic village party will be the chance to catch up with old friends or even make new ones (tickets are selling fast – see page 25 for how to apply).

As you will appreciate, a huge amount of work goes into organising the Hoolie – all

done on a voluntary basis. I am sure you will join with me in giving a big vote of thanks to the small team of dedicated committee members who give up their valuable time to ensure the success of all the events. If you could spare an hour of two to help at any of the events please get in touch – we value your contribution.

I would also like to express our great appreciation to those who have sponsored main events and also to the many local businesses and individuals for their continuing help and support. After chairing three Hoolies over a period of five years, I feel it’s now time to pass the baton on to someone new. A lot of the ground work has already been done, so if you would like to see the Hoolie continue in future years and think you have the ambition and enthusiasm to make it happen, please get in touch.

All that’s left to say is that the Killearn Hoolie Committee look forward to welcoming you to all the exciting activities taking place throughout the week….not many sleeps left!

The successful Killearn 10k was a sell-out in 2013 and, amidst great anticipation, it returns in 2014 to coincide with the Killearn Hoolie week.

The Killearn 10k is Scottish Athletics affiliated and is facilitated by members of jogscotland Killearn and the local community. It is classified as a trail run, but is multi-terrain with tarmac, forest paths, farm track and open grassland.

It is open to entrants aged 16 years and over with a limit set of 200 participants. Final registration on the day will take place from 9am at The Killearn Hotel (the Black Bull).

Entrants will be piped to the start line, from the Buchanan Monument to the War Memorial. Keeping to the beautiful route which the Killearn 10k is reknowned for, the trail will head through the village out on to the historic pipe track, along the foothills of Dumgoyne, returning via Ibert Road.

The finish line will be in Killearn Park where our bespoke medals, souvenir water bottles and goody bags will be awarded to all finishers.

Refreshments will be available at The Killearn Hotel with prize-giving at 12.30pm.

SRFC, in association with the Killearn Hoolie, invites you to join this favourite family event.

Solve the cryptic clues... be fastest around the course... but, this time, in this special sporting year, the teenagers and adults’ event is on bicycles!

• Children’s event (primary school ages) – solve the clues on foot around the village

• Teenagers’ and adults’ event (secondary school plus) – a bit longer and a little more challenging

Come on your bike – helmets must be worn!

Strathendrick Rugby Club Village Treasure Hunt

You’ve seen Gareth Malone on BBC’s The Choir and… now here’s your chance to be part of the Hoolie Choir.

This is an event for everyone who just loves to sing. Don’t worry if you haven’t sung since you were at school – there is no audition, no need to read music. Just bring your voice, your enthusiasm and a sense of fun. You’ll rehearse songs from the shows that you’ve always loved, and then perform them in a concert.

The event, run by the Strathendrick Singers, is hosted by Musical Director, Mark Evans, Director of the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, who works extensively with the National Youth Choir of Scotland.

We’ll rehearse for three hours from 2pm, with a break when tea, coffee and home baking will be available for sale.

The short concert at 6.30pm will showcase our achievements to your family, friends and the wider community

Please register on the Come and SING page (www.strathendricksingers.org.uk), phone Ken Allen (01360 550415), or simply come along on the day.

Climb New Heights at the Hoolie

Back by popular demand! If you have ever wanted to try rock climbing – now is your chance to experience the excitement and thrills of the Climb It Glasgow mobile wall at the Hoolie Gala Day.

The wall is suitable for climbers of all ages, from 5 to 95 (so no excuses that you are too old!)… and with four different rock climbing faces 7m high it’s ideal for both the first time climber and the more experienced.

So why not ease yourself into the world of extreme sports and get a bird’s eye view of the goings on at the Hoolie Gala Day from new heights!

www.climbitglasgow.com

Falconry, quite simply, is the flying of a trained bird of prey at a chosen quarry.

The bird is not tame or domesticated but chooses to work as a team with the man or woman in pursuit of that quarry. Each bird flies with particular skills: the eagle has power and strength, the falcon has breath-taking speed and the hawk has assurance and agility.

All have undeniable beauty and grace and this makes for a truly spectacular show, which all ages will enjoy.

Come and see these wondrous creatures displaying their talents and abilities

throughout the afternoon of the Hoolie Gala Day.

www.strathblanefalconry.co.uk 01360 770222

It wouldn’t be a Hoolie without the presence of the Strathendrick Pipe Band and what a truly amazing sound and sight they make leading the main parade through the village!

Strathendrick Pipe Band was formed in 1940 and provides a warm, friendly environment for adults and children to learn and play the bagpipes, snare drum, tenor drum or bass drum. Everyone is welcome.

The band is committed to making the opportunity to play an instrument as inclusive as possible, and it relies on fundraising and charitable donations to cover the costs of instruments, outfits and travel costs to competitions.

This gives youngsters and adults a chance to try something new without it costing a fortune. Strathendrick Pipe Band also competes in all major Scottish competitions which gives learners an opportunity to move on to playing, and eventually competing, with the full Pipe Band. Bannockburn – the Horrible History!Seven hundred years before the Killearn Hoolie, there was the Bannockburn Hoolie. Same massive amount of planning, same elbow-stabbing squash at the stalls, or crushed up with The Archers (before Radio 4 grabbed them). Now the Killearn Hoolie puts the two events together!

A moment in time you will NEVER forget.

The story of Scotland’s greatest ever battle, re-created for you in glorious technicolour (well lots of tomato sauce). Don’t miss the home game that Scotland actually won.

Featuring a cast of thousands – exaggeration comes easily to the victorious. A two-day battle condensed for you into just 10 minutes. But will the outcome remain the same?

And starring... the only item ever recovered from the Battle of Bannockburn 1314.

Now we ARE telling the truth.Dare you miss it?

Brought to you by Tapsallteerie Theatre Scotland in partnership with The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum.

Tina (pictured top right), from Clitheroe in Lancashire, graduated in 2011 from the RSAMD with a BA (Hons) in Scottish Music. A hugely talented pianist and flautist she was a finalist in the 2011 BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award and has recently been nominated in the Up and Coming Artist of the Year category in the 2013 Scots Trad Music Awards. Gráinne (pictured middle right), from County Cavan in Ireland, moved to Glasgow to study a Masters in Maths and to pursue her love of music.

The pair began playing as a duo in autumn 2012 and in 2013 they recorded an EP comprising solely their own compositions.

Review from gig @ Folklub, 12 Nov 2013 –

“What’s particularly striking about Gráinne & Tina’s set… is the variety of material which, it transpires, is made up entirely of the duo’s own compositions. There’s an obvious love and respect for the tradition – and a stronger Scottish accent than might be expected from two musicians whose backgrounds are steeped in the Irish vernacular – but there are also surprises from this new duo whose imaginative arrangements come together in a vivacious caprice of musical energy. …Gráinne Brady’s direct and unpretentious fiddle style is complemented by Tina Jordan Rees’ sparklingly percussive keyboard, accentuating the players’ individuality yet giving off a sisterly air of familiarity that makes for a delightful pairing.”
