Lake Hövsgöl is located near the border with Russia, at the foot of the eastern Sayan
Mountains. The name Khövsgöl is derived from Tuvan language, meaning 'Blue Water
Lake', and is also referred to respectfully by locals as Dalai Eej (Mother Ocean). It is 1,645m
above sea level, 136km long and has a maximum depth of around 270m (average 138m). It
is the second-most voluminous freshwater lake in Asia, and holds almost 70% of Mongolia's
fresh water and 0.4% of all the fresh water in the world. Its watershed is relatively small,
and it only has small tributaries. It gets drained at the south end by the Eg River, which
connects to the Selenge and ultimately into Lake Baikal.
The surface of the lake freezes over completely in winter. The ice cover gets strong enough
to carry heavy trucks, so that transport routes were installed on its surface as shortcuts to
the normal roads. However, this practice is now forbidden, to prevent pollution of the lake
from both oil leaks and trucks breaking through the ice. It is estimated that 30-40 cars have
sunk into the lake over the years.

TRIP DETAIL
ULAANBAATAR - NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM - TUMEN EKH
Your guide and driver will meet you in the arrivals hall at Ulaanbaatar Chinggis
Khan Airport. Transfer to the hotel and check into your room. The plan for today is
quite flexible, as arrival times will influence things, and you may want some
downtime to relax. You may also need to sort out exchanging money and other
practical things.
We suggest meeting your guide in the hotel reception at 14:30 for a leisurely walk
across the impressive Sukhbaatar Square to visit the National History Museum with
its well-laid out informative displays showcasing the country's fascinating past.
Afterwards, walk south towards the city's main park, and enjoy an intimate
performance of music and dance by the Tumen Ekh ensemble at a small theatre. A
welcome dinner at one of our favourite Mongolian restaurants rounds off your first
day in Mongolia.
Standard Twin Room, Ulaanbaatar Hotel
Ulaanbaatar , meaning "Red Hero", was so
named in 1924, following the creation of the
Mongolian People's Republic. The city was
founded in 1639 as a moveable Buddhist
monastic centre but in 1778 it settled
permanently at its present location on the
Tuul River in north-eastern central Mongolia.
The city lies at an elevation of about 1,310
metres (4,300 ft) and is home to almost half
of the country's 2.7m population.
ULAANBAATAR - MURON - USHIGIIN UVER - BOAT RIDE - LAKE HOVSGOL
Transfer to the airport for the flight north to Muron where your guide and driver
will be waiting for you for the journey up to the lake. Take a small diversion west of
Muron to visit the deerstones at Ushigiin Uver. These are some of the most clear
and striking examples of stylized Bronze Age deerstones, and are surrounded by a
number Turkic burial mounds. Then continue the journey North to the village of
Hatgal at the southern tip of Lake Hovsgol. Depending on the time you will have a
traditional lunch in a guanz (local cafe) here before heading to the east side of the
lake by motorboat (the vehicle will take luggage). This side of the lake is unspoilt -
versus the over-crowded touristy west side. It is just as beautiful - just less
accessible!
Preparations will be underway for tomorrow's horse trek - we will be using horses
provided by the extended family of the camp's owner, Tomorsukh, who used to be
a park ranger in the area. Using his extensive knowledge of the area, this trip is
designed in conjunction with him and other locals.

9 DAY HORSE TREK - SANT TOLGOI - ALAG TSAR RIVER - CHONOT FOREST -
BULNAI HOT SPRINGS - TSAGAAN MOUNTAIN - ZAGASTAI - DONSHIG - LAKE
HOVSGOL
Today you saddle up for your 9 day horse trek into the forests, hills and meadows
up the east side of the lake and further inland through forest and mountainous
terrain that opens up around Bulnai hot springs and Tsagaan River. You then loop
back round to Lake Hovsgol. This whole area , due to its inaccessibility and wild
varied landscapes, is some of the most remote and stunning in all of Mongolia.
The route is flexible to a degree according to pace and ability of the group, but on
average we plan for 5hrs riding per day, starting before 10am and finishing at
around 4pm, with lunch and snack stops in between. Packhorses carry all the
equipment, including a dining tent where the expedition cook will rustle up hearty
dinners at the end of each day. Evenings are spent round the campfire and nights
in tents under the vast Mongolian skies. On the final day of the trek the group will
return to stay again at Ar Davkhar ger camp where you started from.
Horses & Riding - Mongolian horses are of a
stocky build, with relatively short but strong
legs and a large head. They range in size from
12 to 14 hands high. Despite their small size,
they are horses, not ponies! Mongolian
horses have great stamina, although they
have smaller body they can gallop for 10 km
without break. The hooves are very robust,
and very few animals are fitted with
horseshoes.

MURON - ULAANBAATAR
Head to Muron airport for your flight to Ulaanbaatar. After arriving back in the capital, head back to the hotel - perhaps a detour
en route to the Gobi Cashmere store might be an idea - it's up to you, so discuss with your guide. You may also want to do some
shopping in town- perhaps at some of the decent craft outlets (Tsagaan Alt felt shop, Quilters, Mary and Martha) or the State
Department Store. Your guide will be on hand to assist. After freshening up at the hotel, enjoy a farewell meal at one of our
favourite restaurants.

DELGER RIVER - USHIGIIN UVER DEERSYONES - RIDING - KAYAKING (OPTIONAL)
After a leisurely breakfast drive south to the Delger River. Take a walk (45mins) or
drive to see the ancient deerstones at Ushigiin Uver - these are some of the most
clear and striking examples of stylized Bronze Age deerstones, and are surrounded
by a number Turkic burial mounds. Today and the next day you will have a chance
to go riding along the river valley and/or go kayaking on the river. This wonderful
rustic camp in a stunning location is run by a good friend of ours, Esee, and his wife
Moogii. It is often the favourite ger camp of our guests.
