hope and despair
DESCRIPTION
PhilisophyTRANSCRIPT
And between the two attitudes of hope and despair, which is truly humanizing? Which leads to
dehumanization? Why?"
We humans are living in this finite and limited universe, yet we aim for the perfect, for the
ultimate, for the divine. This perfection will never be found in this world, that’s why we must
hope that it exist beyond the limits of this horizontal plane of existence and is attainable by us.
By hoping we exercise our freedom for creative imagination and we respond to the call of our
inner dynamism that our life will eventually lead towards the infinite plenitude. We may not
know what it is like and where it is, but we know that it will truly satisfy and fulfill our
yearnings. Therefore, hope really does humanize us for it makes us believe that our life will
reach ultimate fulfillment and not lead to nothingness. However, if we choose to despair by
believing that perfection will never be attained and that divine does not exist, then we humans
become nonsense. We become absurd and frustrated beings for we yearn for perfection yet we
believe that it never exists. Despair will also hinder our growth and our freedom to transcend
limits for we believe that everything revolves around the horizontal plane of existence. We will
then have a negative view about life for we engrave into us that nothing is beyond this limited
and finite world and that we are bound to it, that we can’t overcome limitations. Thus, despair is
truly dehumanizing for our life becomes dull and empty and our whole being is crushed with
limitations that there will be no room for growth and freedom.
