hope begins with education2016 year in reviewyour 2017 impact report
a note from our founder and board chair
This year, we are celebrating a milestone! 100 graduates havesuccessfully completed their university, college, and vocational school programs in Uganda and, for the first time, Rwanda. These are graduates you have cheered along the way through your generous support. Now, they have started the next exciting chapter of their lives as teachers, accountants, nurses, engineers, along with other professions. With strong mentorship, and Grad Prep (Beautiful World’s employment skills training program), entrepreneurs have emerged with their own businesses. Each graduate is using their education and skills to earn an income that they use to take care of themselves and their families.
We often get asked about the multiplier effect of supporting girls’ education. This effect is beautifully captured in the above photo of Prossy (with her mother, son, daughter, and me!). Before she received a scholarship from Beautiful World, her mother struggled to care for Prossy, let alone Prossy’s children. They both felt helpless in the face of another generation enduring poverty and hardships. With your support, Prossy received a scholarship from Beautiful World and in 2016, she graduated from Ugandan Christian University with her family proudly by her side.

Sara DunkleyFounder and Board Chair
Yours,
Prossy is now gainfully employed at a new hotel close to the Ugandan airport. The income she earns provides food, rent and health care for her children and mother. She is also paying school fees so her son can attend kindergarten. Prossy just graduated yet she is putting an end to the cycle of poverty for herself, her children, and her mother. She is an advocate for girls’ education in her community, and has become a mentor to younger girls encouraging them to work hard and graduate. Prossy‘s story is a testament to the core of what we believe here at Beautiful World: educating a girl can transform her life, her family, and her community for generations.
Prossy’s success highlights the need for marginalized girls to access higher education and Beautiful World’s scholarship model. In 2017 we made great strides towards this goal. Here are some highlights:
• Over 500 students received life-changing scholarships• 82% of our graduates are self-employed or employed• Our community grew by 340 people, including new foundations.• We submitted our first Global Affairs Canada grant application.• We launched a program for 34 girls in Ethiopia (more details on
page 16).
You are an integral part of this tremendous success, both at Beautiful World and in the lives of every girl in our program. With an education, they can become leaders who will step in to lift themselves and others out of the poverty they have known their entire lives, fulfilling the dream of every girl in their village along the way.
When I meet girls and young women like Prossy, they often wonder how they got to be so lucky to have found Beautiful World. Through the transformative power of higher education, they marvel at the generosity of Canadians like you. You have provided them with skills, confidence, and courage to break free from poverty and create a better future for themselves. Thank you so much for all you do to make this possible!

what we doWith over 10 million girls out of school globally, the need to continue educatinggirls remains exceedingly high. The majority of these girls reside in the poorest countries and face tremendous barriers – especially as they become teenagers. Without financial resources and adequate support, girls often drop out of school after primary school. This puts them at risk for gender-based violence, child marriage, teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, or risky and unstable labour in the informal sector. This is why we believe that primary education is not enough.
Beautiful World believes that girls with higher levels of education are empowered to thrive. They become leaders who reinvest in their families and communities; helping to overcome poverty that has been entrenched for generations. We invest in girls and women from the poorest communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Our support with secondary and post-secondary education leads to transformative economic and social change.
Beautiful World developed a Change Model framework (pictured to the right) to demonstrate the key components and outcomes of our scholarship program. Ultimately, success for Beautiful World is not graduation day, but when girls and young women overcome poverty, become leaders, and transform their communi-ties. We accomplish this by providing three key pillars for success: access to secondary and post-secondary education through comprehensive scholarships; leadership and employment skills training; and mentorship to build confidence and independence through managing their own finances.

our scholarship model
Beautiful World works with local partners in Ethiopia, Rwanda, SierraLeone, and Uganda. We deliver our scholarship model to girls who have survived unimaginable poverty, civil war, HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and even genocide.
Many of the girls we support leave their families and communities behind to attend school hours away. This is how we realized that tuition, school supplies, and uniforms were not enough. For girls to truly succeed in secondary and post-secondary school, they would also need access to safe transportation, housing, and medical care. For teenage girls, we understood how critical it was to have a mentor to provide guidance and emotional support, as they navigated their new worlds away from home.
Finally, to set them up for success after graduation, we created Grad Prep, a program to provide young women the critical skills needed to find employment. With a full spectrum of support, girls and young women stay in school, graduate, find employment, and give back to their communities.

When you give a gift to Beautiful World, you provide a full spectrum ofsupport for every girl in school. While the cost of a scholarship varies depending on the country and level of school (high school, vocational, college or university), the average cost to support a high school or voca-tional school student is $1000 CDN per year. For college and university, each scholarship can range from $1000 to $2500 CDN per year. Gifts of under $1000, provide critical items needed for girls to stay in school and succeed.
100% of every donation received goes directly to the girls and young women in our programs.
In 2017, you helped 312 students succeed in school. Their futures were transformed the moment you decided to step into the gap and make a commitment to their education. Thank you for making this possible!

Douce knew from an early age that her dream was a career in hospitali-ty. Even before graduating high school, she had already advanced to a position at the front desk of a nearby hotel on the outskirts of Kigali, Rwanda. With school during the day and work right afterwards, this left little time for Douce to study. Yet she managed to get her schoolwork done, sometimes as late as 11 at night when she had finished her shift at the hotel.
At the time, Douce lived with her father, step-mother and younger siblings. Her father, who had a drinking problem, was often abusive and she took it upon herself to care for and protect her younger siblings. Douce used her own earnings from the hotel to pay for her education. She paid for her younger siblings’ education as well.
Following high school, Douce decid-ed to live with her mother and step-father instead. While she was still resolved to pay her own way, her income was no longer enough to cover both her siblings’ tuition fees and her own post-secondary fees. Yet, what she lacked in funds, she made up for in determination.
Douce found our local partner, FAWE Rwanda, and after learning about the Beautiful World Canada scholarship program, decided to apply.
Douce was one of 100+ girls who applied for the 12 scholarships that were available at the time. When she learned she had been successful, her whole future started to come into focus. She was accepted at the University of Tourism, Technology and Business Studies for the Tourism and Hospitality Management program in Kigali.
During her program, Douce had access to Grad Prep – Beautiful World’s employment skills training program. Through assignments and workshops, Douce learned how to create a cover letter and resume. She also had the opportunity to practice interviewing with her peers. To help with her dream of one day owning a hotel, Douce created a business plan.
Recently, another dream came true for Douce. She graduated with honours from her program!
With her education Douce is now earning an income where she can fully support herself, her mother, and her younger siblings. She has become a leader in her family and a shining example of how hard work and perse-verance can translate into success.

generations: Diana’s Story
Beautiful World Year In Review 201714
When Diana was two years old, her life changed forever. Her father died from HIV/AIDS, leaving her mother – who was also infected with thedisease -- to raise Diana and threeother children on her own. At thetime of her father’s death, the ratesof HIV infection were at an all-timehigh in Uganda. Efforts to curb thespread of the virus were just startingto take shape.
Many decades have passed since HIV was first recognized as a global health crisis, and much has been done to educate and raise aware-ness. Yet, there remains a lot of isolation for those who either live with HIV, and/or whose family members have passed away from AIDS-related illnesses.
This isolation is something Diana and her family are all too familiar with. After her father’s death and her mother’s diagnosis, the community slowly began to distance them-selves from Diana’s family, leaving deep social and financial repercus-sions.
Despite all this, Diana was deter-mined to rise above the pain and be the hero her family needs.
Diana and her mother live in Mukono, a small town about an hour away from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.
To support the family, Diana’s mother makes mats and beaded jewelry to sell in the local market, although this yields an inconsistent income. Up until high school, her mother’s income supported Diana’s education. In addition to keeping up her grades, Diana would participate in dance, drama, the debate club, and was her school’s news anchor – a role she says helped her see other people’s points of view.
Now that Diana has graduated high school, her mother’s income is no longer enough to help Diana pursue her degree in university. Diana’s dream is to trans-form her local community, encourage and support younger children to be in school, and to lift her mother and family out of poverty.
With your unwavering support, Diana received a scholarship and is now well on her way to making her dream a reality!
She was recently accepted into the Community Justice and Development program at Kyambogo University and is excited to begin this journey. Diana understands the enormous value of education and wants to use what she learns to transform her family and community.
Diana’s new path would not have been possible without you by her side. Thank you for believing in her.
I aspire to be a great, courageous, and honest
lady in the future.

new program launches in Ethiopia
Beautiful World Year In Review 201716
There is nothing more fulfilling at Beautiful World, than the opportunity to provide scholarships to girls who are in desperate need of accessing education. In addition to receiving multiple applications for each scholar-ship spot, Beautiful World receives proposals from local organizations around the world, demonstrating that higher education is critically needed to overcome poverty. Our 2014 program launch in Rwanda was the last time we were able to reach girls in a new country. Just recently, that first group of young women graduated from engineering and hospitality programs, demonstrating the value of post-secondary education and the life-changing opportunities it presents.
This is why we were thrilled when we received confirmation that the Unifor Social Justice Fund and the Luke Four Foundation would be partnering with us. This made it possible to launch a scholarship program for 34 marginalized girls in Ethiopia!
According to the World Bank, Ethiopia’s per capita income of $590 is substantially lower than the regional average, historically pegging it as one of the poorest countries in the world. Despite this, the Ethiopian economy has experienced some substantial growth in the expansion of services and the agricultural sector in recent years.
Why Ethiopia?
With it, the number of Ethiopians living in extreme poverty declined from 55.3% in 2000 to 33.5% in 2011. Despite this progress, the number of Ethiopians living on less than $1.90 USD a day remains alarmingly high.
In Ethiopia, nearly 44% of female youth of secondary school age are out of school, with the poorest girls making up the majority of that percentage. If they happen to go to primary school and successfully finish, only 6% go to secondary school. This is due to the soaring costs of tuition combined with food, school supplies, accommodation and transportation. This figure drops even further when considering post-secondary education - at that point, only 5% of girls make it through.
When she was young, both Meklit’s parents died, leaving her and her sibling in the care of her elderly grandmother. To earn an income, her grandmother spins wool from the two sheep she owns. When describing her home, Meklit says they rent a house with mud walls and a tin roof that leaks.
Meklit is currently enrolled in a vocational program for mechanical engi-neering. Her goal is to open a garage. She plans to use her income to become independent and support her grandmother. Meklit’s career choice is also breaking gender barriers in her community as she forays into a traditionally male-dominated field.
Throughout her program, Meklit will receive continuous support from our local partner, ROTOM Ethiopia. She will be matched with a mentor – a woman from her local community who can provide guidance and encourage-ment – and she will have access to employ-ment skills training through our Grad Prep Program.

Beautiful World Year In Review 201718
ProgramsOur program spending grew to $562,395 – the highest amount in our history. With the increased support from an ever-growing community, we were able to provide 312 scholarships to girls living in Uganda, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. We have allocated the excess revenue over expenses to fund our Sierra Leone scholarship program. This program expense was deferred from 2017 to early 2018 due to an audit that was required for our partner’s local charity status - a requirement of our partnership agreement.
Thanks to the incredible support of the Beautiful World Community, it wasanother record year for donations and grants! Our annual donations increased by 15% to $777,866. This includes $60,757 of deferred contribu-tions, which are donations that were fully received in 2017 for multi-year scholarships.
This increase can be attributed to:•New and successful fundraising events hosted by our donors;•Grants from foundations and unions;•Successful breakfast and gala events hosted by Beautiful World;•Our initial gifts of stocks;•Families and individuals who have committed to supportingstudents for their entire 4-year degree programs.•And, of course, our committed monthly donors

OperationsIn 2017, our operating costs remained consistent with prior years. Operations includes the salary for our single paid staff, the International Program Manag-er, as well as office supplies, postage and marketing materials. These expenses were offset by a generous donation from a private family founda-tion. This means 100% of your donation goes directly to the programs on the ground.¹ In addition, our focus on partnering with local organizations, as well as the support of our incredible volunteers, allows us to keep the cost of operations at 11 cents of every dollar raised.
Fundraising9 cents of every dollar raised in 2017 supported our fundraising and awareness raising activities. This increased slightly from 2016 to support our annual gala dinner which almost doubled in attendance, as well as new fundraising infrastructure such as the online fundraising pages. Our annual gala raised nearly $177,000 in 2017 and had 450 guests in attendance that evening. Visit page 24 to learn more about that magical evening. New events included our first breakfast in the fall with 150 in attendance, the majority of whom were new to the Beautiful World com-munity, as well a children’s chess tournament at Branksome Hall. Between these events hosted by Beautiful World, and events held by our support-ers, we added a record 340 new donors in 2017.

event highlightsChess WeekMany of you were lucky to meet Phiona Mutesi, a chess champion from Ugandawho inspired the Disney movie, the Queen of Katwe. Phiona brought her chess coach, Robert Katende, and together with Beautiful World, helped raise thousands of dollars to help girls access secondary and post-secondary school. Chess Week was spectacular and included our 5th Annual Gala Dinner at the Toronto Reference Library. During the Gala, Phiona played a historic game of chess with another honoured guest, General Romeo Dallaire, and was interviewed by Marci Ien, co-host of CTV's The Social. Later that week, Phiona met with 100 children to lead a game of life-size chess at Branksome Hall. We couldn’t have asked for a more epic and successful week to raise funds and raise awareness for Beautiful World!
Inaugural Breakfast Event
For the first time, Beautiful World hosted theEndless Possibilities Breakfast. Jackson Kaguri, Founder and Executive Director of the Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project came to speak to over 100 people about the importance of girl’s education, and how Nyaka’s partnership with Beautiful World is helping to transform his community in Uganda. The success of this event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our table captains – Board members and committed supporters of Beautiful World – who invited their networks to the Breakfast and helped raise enough funds to support 22 scholarships!

Launch of Miles on the Nile 2019 In fall 2016, after a full day of visiting students and their families in Uganda, RuthDouglas (Board member), decided she wanted to do something to help more girls access Beautiful World’s scholarships. Seeing the transformative impact of educa-tion first hand inspired her to create Miles on the Nile – a 100km trek along the Nile in Uganda, set to take place in January 2019. Together with 25 Canadian women, this group has committed to raising $100,000, and increasing awareness about the critical impact of higher education on girls in sub-Saharan Africa.
