The past eight months have been tumultuous, to say the least. We all know how the COVID-19 pandemic caused economic activity to cease, leading to massive layoffs, and forcing so many safety-net organizations to pause services. We, like everyone, were faced with tremendous

decisions to make.

Confronted with a terrifying number of unknowns, we refused to abandon our mission to serve the parents and children who needed our care. We buckled down, planned, and adjusted to keep our staff and residents safe. The medical community’s response was phenomenal, donating time, supplies, and testing equipment. The dedication of our staff was unwavering, as our staff fine-tuned plans and budgets to keep everyone safe, housed and fed. And, the resilience of our residents was awe-inspiring, even as parents were laid off, children sent home from school, and overwhelming uncertainty loomed ahead.

As things slowly inch towards a new normal, homeless families are challenged with additional obstacles. Housing and employment shortages require our residents to have a dogged tenacity while sporadic transitions from in-class learning to distance learning throw hard-fought routines to the wayside. Despite all these trials, our case managers are adapting protocols to keep our families moving forward – saving, planning, and learning, preparing them for a future of independence.

While we can’t yet predict for sure how this story will evolve, we do know that we are more inspired today than ever before to fulfill our mission to serve homeless families.

OUR 5 BIGGEST SUCCESSES OF 2019 - 2020

HOPE IN CRISIS When faced with the COVID-19 crisis, our proactive response allowed us to safely

continue to serve homeless families through community shutdowns. Utilizing

partnerships with the Cleveland Clinic Indian River, the Mayo Clinic, and Treasure

Coast Community Health, we created rigorous safety and testing protocols to allow

our doors to remain open, while maintaining the safety of residents and staff.

HOPE IN RESILIENCE The economic downturn caused by COVID-19 left many of our families temporarily

without employment and all of our children without in-classroom educational structure

& support. Despite these potentially devastating setbacks, the Hope for Families

Center was able to keep our residents on a savings path for future independence

and provide the resources for our students to complete the school year without major

setbacks to educational growth.

HOPE IN SUPPORT Community involvement is, and always will be, essential to the

Hope for Families mission. This year our community of volunteers, donors, and event

attendees truly came together to support those who have nothing. The outpouring of

goodwill through the newly launched Farm to Tableaux banquet, the Annual Dinner,

and our Pearls luncheon, as well as the day-to-day support from regular

donors and volunteers, is proof of a caring and generous

community invested in homeless families.

HOPE IN LITERACY Made possible through the generosity of the Joseph V. Flaherty Family Foundation,

the newly completed Reading Resource Room is an educational resource center for

our homeless families, offering a quiet place to read, complete homework, and attend

educational workshops.

HOPE IN GROWTH Improvements to the recently acquired campus expansion have created a space for

children and families to practice constructive physical and social skills to nurture both

mind and body. With room for safe, free play and organized gatherings, this newly

fenced property is another stepping stone towards achieving our expanded service

goals in the future.

HOPE FOR EDUCATION We know education is the foundation of success for the families we serve. By taking advantage of our educational

opportunities in the areas of finance, literacy, mental health and parenting skills, our families can master concepts that can

help them to move from a state of despair to independence and stability. So many of our services are focused on cultivating

these skills, but we know we can, and must, do more. By utilizing existing community programs and professionals, we provide

the tools that potentially empower our residents to avoid their past missteps and prepare them for future success.

HOPE FOR EXPANSION For every family we help there are 7 more in need. As one of the few homeless family shelters in South Florida, we know

the importance of keeping homeless families together as they work toward independence. Our long-range goals include

expanding our facilities to serve all families who need us.

HOPE FOR FOREVER The guidance and accountability our case managers provide to our residents are invaluable. We believe that by continuing

these services in the form of regular follow up, even after a family has found a home of their own, will ensure the long-term

success of these previously homeless families.

HOPE FOR FOREVER Person to person, direct community bonds create a foundation and model for future success. By connecting our

residents and their children with volunteers and mentors from within the community, we hope to foster the seeds of

long-term achievement.

PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS ON A GIVEN NIGHT.

ON A SINGLE DAY in January 2019, 567,715 individuals were counted as

homeless across America. 30% were families with children.

MORE THAN 30% OF THE HOMELESS COUNTED IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA ARE FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN.

WITH SO MANY FAMILIES WITHOUT A HOME OR ON THE BRINK OF HOMELESSNESS, THE CONTINUITY OF OUR MISSION IS VITAL TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR COMMUNITY AND THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN. WE ARE PROUD OF THE HOPE WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE, BUT WE WANT TO DO MORE.
