Our Favorite Hymn of Hope- Today’s favorite Hymn of Hope is
“Lift High the Cross.” The hymn focuses us on the words of Jesus
from John 12:32, “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will
draw all people to myself.” Christ crucified for the sins of the
world draws us to Him by His forgiveness and love that is for all.
While each verse is rich with meaning, I want to point out my
favorite. “All newborn soldiers of the Crucified bear on their
brows the seal of Him of died.” This a reminder to each Christian
of our baptism into Christ. For each of us, we were marked with
the sign of the cross on our forehead and our heart to mark us as
ones redeemed by Christ the crucified. So we carry the
forgiveness won on the cross with us at all times, as we go to
share that hope that is in us.
Please take some time to review the Bible readings below,
they will be the subject of next week’s sermon.
September 10th -
(OLD TESTAMENT) – Ezekiel 33. This week we hear the Lord
warning Ezekiel about his responsibility to warn the
sinner – lest he die in his sins. Leaders of today's
church still need to see themselves as the Lord's
watchmen – to give needed warning to those who
wander faithlessly.
(EPISTLE) – Romans 13:1-10. This week's Epistle says that
government is not just a sociological institution, but
part of God's plan for human society. Governing
authorities are God's representatives – to do
people good. We surely must include the
responsibilities of honoring the constituted
authorities and obeying the laws of our society as
part of our "loving our neighbor."
(HOLY GOSPEL) – Matthew 18 is the Bible's seat of what is
called "church discipline". We cannot just look the
other way when fellow Christians are deadening
their relationship with Christ through willful sins – of
commission or omission. We must reach out in
Jesus' name with a sincere and pointed call to
repentance.
We all have questions for God, and over the next number of weeks we will look for the answers that God gives in His Word. During our Sunday morning Bible Class (9:30am in the church basement) we'll be wrestling with a new question every week or two. The questions all came from members of the class (you can add one too, just let Pastor Jason know.) Check in the Anchor to see what questions are coming and join us for this time in God's Word. Next questions - Why doesn't God show His power anymore (like parting the Red Sea)? Why does God allow so much suffering and evil? Why doesn't God destroy the devil, since Jesus has defeated him? Why do so many people turn to "feel good" churches? Why would God have to sacrifice Jesus to pay for our sins, couldn't he just speak that all sin is payed for? And more!
