ALASH ENSEMBLE$20.00 Thursday 4/23 8:00 pm Buy Tickets

Trio of Tuvan Throat Singers from Siberia bring their unique and sensationalartistry to Nighttown stage!

Alash Ensemble is a trio of master throat singers (xöömeizhi) from Tuva, a tinyrepublic in the heart of Central Asia. The ancient art of throat singing (xöömei)developed among the nomadic herdsmen of this region. Alash remains groundedin this tradition while expanding its musical vocabulary with new ideas from theWest.

All members of Alash were trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood, firstlearning from their families, and later becoming students of master throat singers. In 1999, as students at Kyzyl Arts College, they formed a group called Changy-Xaya. They practiced in the damp college basement on Kochetovo Street, andsoon became the resident traditional ensemble on campus. At the same time theylearned about western music, practiced on hybrid Tuvan-European instruments, and listened to new trends coming out of America. Under the guidance of Kongar-ool Ondar (best known to western audiences for his role in the film Genghis Blues),they began to forge a new musical identity. They introduced the guitar andsometimes even the Russian bayan (accordion) into their arrangements, alongsidetheir traditional Tuvan instruments. They experimented with new harmonies andsong structures. The effect is an intriguing mixture of old and new.

The musicians are inspired by the music of their grandparents, great-grandparents, and the great musicians of Tuva and Central Asia. At the same timethey are influenced by such western artists as Sun Ra and Jimi Hendrix. Yet theAlash musicians never sacrifice the integrity of their heritage in an effort to maketheir music more hip for an American audience. Rather they look forcontemporary ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvanmusic.

TOM CHAPIN$25.00 Friday 4/24 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Legendary Singer/Songwriter plays Nighttown!

In a career that spans five decades, 23 albums and three GRAMMY awards, multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist Tom Chapin has covered an incredible amountof creative ground. In addition to his work as a recording artist and concertperformer, Chapin has acted on Broadway, as well as working extensively in films, television and radio.

As a music-maker, Chapin has maintained two long and productive parallelcareers, both as a highly respected contemporary folk artist and as a pioneer inthe field of children's music. In the former role, Chapin has established areputation for insightful, heartfelt songcraft and effortlessly charismatic liveperformances. Chapin's infectious songs, sterling musicianship and personalwarmth consistently shine through, whether he's performing on record or in aconcert hall, an outdoor festival, a school, in front of a symphony orchestra or in anintimate coffeehouse.

The New York Times called Chapin "one of the great personalities in contemporaryfolk music."

The son of noted jazz drummer and teacher Jim Chapin and the grandson ofauthor/critic Kenneth Burke and portrait painter James Chapin, Tom grew up in afamily that encouraged artistic pursuits. He began performing professionally as ateenager in the early 1960s, playing in Greenwich Village folk clubs alongside hissiblings Harry and Steve as The Chapin Brothers.

Chapin launched his solo recording career with 1976's Life Is Like That. It was thefirst of a string of albums that further established his reputation as both a giftedstoryteller and a natural entertainer, winning him an uncommonly loyal fan base inthe process. He also continued to venture into other creative areas, playing thelead role in the hit Broadway musical Pump Boys and Dinettes, working off-Broadway as musical director of both Cotton Patch Gospel and Harry Chapin: Liesand Legends, and serving as host of TV's National Geographic Explorer. He's alsowritten and performed satirical topical songs for National Public Radio's MorningEdition, and had a cameo role as the Vice Presidential candidate in JonathanDemme's 2004 remake of The Manchurian Candidate.

A new CD, Put A Light In Your Window, features original songs, one completelyreinterpreted song, and a cover of a folk classic.

In addition to his varied musical and media endeavors, Chapin is also a powerfuladvocate on behalf of a variety of charitable causes. He is an active boardmember of WhyHunger, the organization which the artist's older brother, the latesinger-songwriter/activist Harry Chapin, founded (as World Hunger Year) in the1970s. He also remains active in a variety of environmental causes, as well asefforts on behalf of music and the arts in our public schools.

"I'm at that place in my life where I follow what interests me," Chapin concludes. "Istill love the guitar, I still love to sing, and I still love the thrill of creation: a goodsong, a good recording, a good concert. I feel blessed to be my own boss, creatingmy own material and performing for so many different audiences, ages andgenerations."

TOM CHAPIN FAMILY SHOW

TOM CHAPIN FAMILY SHOW $15.00 - $20.00 Saturday 4/25 11:00 am Buy Tickets

Special Saturday Morning Show

Award Winning Singer/Songwriter tells stories, and plays songsfor All Ages for Special Saturday Morning Show!

Winner of the following awards:Parents' Choice Gold Award,Family Choice Award, Creative Child CD Of The Year Award,Mom's Choice Gold Award, and Academics' Choice Smart MediaAwardTom Chapin has maintained two long and productive parallel careers, both as ahighly respected contemporary folk artist and as a pioneer in the field of children'smusic. In the latter, he continues to engage the hearts, minds and imaginations ofyoung listeners with witty, life-affirming original songs delivered in a sophisticatedarray of musical styles. In either format, Chapin's infectious songs, sterlingmusicianship and personal warmth consistently shine through.

Billboard called him "the best family artist around" and described him as "totallycaptivating." Parents magazine stated, "Nobody today is writing and performingbetter kids' songs than Tom Chapin."

In 1971, he began a five-year run as the host of the Emmy- and Peabody award-winning ABC-TV children's series Make A Wish.

Chapin was already firmly established as a performer and recording artist when hefirst branched out into family music with his 1988 album Family Tree. He's sincereleased twelve more family CDs aimed at post-toddler, pre-teen listeners andtheir parents, comprised of original songs addressing such issues as family life, positive self-image and respect for the environment.

"When I was hosting Make A Wish, people had suggested to me many times that Iought to make a 'children's record,' which to me meant singing songs for toddlersabout little duckies and didn't seem particularly interesting," Chapin explains."Then I had children, and when they were eight and six, I realized that there wasnot a lot of music for that age group. They understood language and story andhumor, but were too old for toddler music and too young for rebellion and lovesongs. So I did Family Tree with that in mind, and it won all kinds of awards.Suddenly I had a new career as a family artist."

Chapin's latest family release is The Incredible Flexible You, a collection of 12 newsongs that help young listeners navigate the tricky waters of social interaction. It'sA Songbag of Social Clues. Each tune is designed for preschool and earlyelementary children with social cognitive challenges, and their parents andteachers, too. It has received a 2013 Parents’ Choice Gold Award, a Family ChoiceAward, a Mom’s Choice Gold Award and a Creative Child CD of the Year Award."Writing family music," he observes, "has been a wonderful course in songwriting. You have a dual agenda: keep it understandable and fun for kids, but well-writtenand intelligent and musical enough to keep adults listening as well. Within theseparameters, we've found an enormous amount of topics and approaches andmusical feels that continue to excite us to keep coming back and doing it again."

Chapin also serves as narrator of a series of children's books, three of which havewon GRAMMY awards in the Best Spoken Word Album for Children category.

GUY DAVIS$20.00 Friday 5/08 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Acoustic Blues at its best with Guitarist, Vocalist, & ComposerGuy Davis.Whether Guy Davis is appearing on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” or nationallysyndicated radio programs such as Garrison Keillor’s, “A Prairie HomeCampanion”, “Mountain Stage” or David Dye’s,“World Café”., in front of 15,000people on the Main Stage of a major festival, or teaching an intimate gathering ofstudents at a Music Camp, Guy feels the instinctive desire to give each listener his‘all’.

His ‘all’ is the Blues.

The routes, and roots, of his blues are as diverse as the music form itself. It can besoulful, moaning out a people’s cry, or playful and bouncy as a hay-ride.

He's a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. But most importantly, GuyDavis is a bluesman. The blues permeates every corner of Davis' creativity.

Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions ofacoustic blues and bringing them to as many ears as possible through the materialof the great blues masters, African American stories, and his own original songs, stories and performance pieces.

His influences are as varied as the days. Musically, he enjoyed such great bluesmusicians as Blind Willie McTell (and his way of story telling), Skip James, ManseLipscomb, Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotton, and Buddy Guy, among others. Itwas through Taj Mahal that he found his way to the old time blues. He also lovedsuch diverse musicians as Fats Waller and Harry Belafonte.

His writing and storytelling have been influenced by Zora Neale Hurston, GarrisonKeillor, and by the late Laura Davis (his one hundred and five year-oldgrandmother).

Davis' creative roots run deep. Though raised in the New York City area, he grewup hearing accounts of life in the rural south from his parents and especially hisgrandparents, and they made their way into his own stories and songs. Davistaught himself the guitar (never having the patience to take formal lessons) andlearned by listening to and watching other musicians. One night on a train fromBoston to New York he picked up finger picking from a nine-fingered guitar player.

His latest album, “Legacy” was picked as one of the Best CDs of the Year byNational Public Radio (NPR), and the lead track on it, “Uncle Tom’s Dead” waschosen as one of the Best Songs of the Year. This of course is ironic as FCC ruleswon’t allow it to be played on the air, but it’s a fitting tribute none the less.

NYC based Singer/Songwriter, vocalist, & pianist leads Trio! Playing Music from his brand new CD! With Jon Regen-piano &vocals, Kip Reed-bass, & Dave Green-drums. On one ofNighttown's beautiful 3 season patios!Remarkable. Infectious. Soulful. Just some of the words critics have used todescribe Stop Time, the new album by singer, songwriter and pianist Jon Regen, out April 28, 2015 on Motéma Music. Produced by Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Paul McCartney), and featuringDavey Faragher and Pete Thomas from Elvis Costello’s band the Imposters, StopTime finds Regen at the peak of his songwriting and pianistic powers, with tenoriginal tunes that brim with humor and heart. Songs like “I Will Wait,” “MorningPapers” and “Stop Time” prove Regen a master of the sticky lyric and thepenetrating piano hook, recalling the work of forbears like Billy Joel and RandyNewman while simultaneously showcasing Regen’s singular take on modern love.In the words of storied Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, “Stop Time never

In the words of storied Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, “Stop Time neverstops pleasing the ears.” “The album really began after I met the actor Jeremy Irons at a party in London,”Regen says. “We started talking over ample amounts of wine and soon after, heasked me to play the piano for him. Not wanting to disappoint an Oscar winner, Isat down and started playing a bluesy, New Orleans kind of vamp. Without warning,he grabbed a cello off the wall and started playing it like an upright bass. Wejammed together on that one song for nearly fifteen minutes! When I returnedhome to New York City, I married the bluesy feel of that jam session to a set oflyrics I had written about a guy who becomes dismayed watching his youth slipaway. The resulting song “Stop Time” became the anchor for the album that wasto come.” A protégé of the legendary pianist Kenny Barron, Jon Regen began his career as asympathetic sideman to renowned jazz artists like Kyle Eastwood and Little JimmyScott. After releasing a series of critically acclaimed instrumental jazz recordings,Regen made an abrupt left turn in 2004 and released the singer/songwriter EPAlmost Home. Recorded in a single day, the album won immediate acclaim andformally announced Regen’s arrival onto the worldwide concert stage. Regenfollowed the EP with his full-length 2008 release Let It Go, which featured AndySummers of the Police and Martha Wainwright. In 2011, Regen co-produced and released the album Revolution. Featuringcontributions from Andy Summers, Benmont Tench from Tom Petty & theHeartbreakers and Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, the album received ravereviews the world over. Bloomberg and Allmusic.com each awarded it “Four Stars”. "For me, the new album is all about hope and home,” Regen says. "It’s a heartfeltalbum, but it’s also a humorous one because living in New York City is always anadventure! I decided to call the album Stop Time, because it’s the song thatstarted this whole wild ride in the first place. And maybe if we all could stop timeonce in a while, we would realize how much there already is to celebrate.”

STEPHANE WREMBEL GYPSYJAZZ QUARTET$20.00 Friday 5/15 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Gypsy Jazz Guitarist from France leads his Quartet. As featuredin the Woody Allen Movie "Midnight in Paris".

Featuring: Stephane Wrembel-guitar, Roy Williams-guitar, KellsNollenberger-acoustic bass, & Nick Anderson-drums.He’s been called “a revelation” by Rolling Stone. Woody Allen recruited him toscore the theme to the 2012 Academy Award winning film Midnight in Paris, and heperformed live during this year’s Oscar’s telecast. To say that French-bornguitarist/composer Stephane Wrembel—who learned his craft among the Gypsiesat campsites in the French countryside—has already had a remarkable careerwould be an understatement. But this virtuoso, who is now Brooklyn-based, hastruly just begun to make his mark as one of the most original guitar voices incontemporary music.

Origins, Wrembel’s fifth and most highly anticipated release yet, finds the multi-faceted musician corralling a myriad of influences into a hybrid thatsimultaneously reflects where he’s been and points to where he’s headed.Although he built his reputation as a stylist in the mode of the iconic French Sintiguitarist Django Reinhardt, Wrembel now revels in transcending and expanding.“I’m digging deeper and deeper into my roots,” he says about the album. Originstouches upon everything from blues to flamenco to rock; all of these influencescome together as something identifiable only as Stephane Wrembel. It is the mostsophisticated representation to date of Wrembel’s superior compositional skills; hismelodies burst with a panoply of textures and colors, moods and emotions.

“It’s a different state of mind all together,” adds Wrembel, talking about Origins. “Ialways compose with a picture in mind. That Impressionism approach is the mainthing that I’ve carried with me from Fontainebleau.”

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE TRIO$30.00 Saturday 5/16 8:00 pm Buy Tickets 10:00 pm Buy Tickets

State of the Art Acoustic Bassist Leads All-Star Trio for two big shows atNighttown! Featuring: Christian McBride-acoustic bass, Christian Sands-piano,& Ulysses Owens-drums.

Four-time GRAMMY®-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride can be likened to aforce of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and groundingof a seasoned journeyman. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless loveof swing, McBride’s path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrivalon the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphianative has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respectedfigures in the music world today.

Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursueclassical studies at the Juilliard School. There he was promptly recruited to theroad by saxophonist Bobby Watson. Call it a change in curriculum: a decade’sworth of study through hundreds of recording sessions and countless gigs with anever-expanding circle of musicians. He was finding his voice, and others werelearning to listen for it.

In 2000 the lessons of the road came together in the formation of what wouldbecome his longest-running project, the Christian McBride Band. Praised by writerAlan Leeds as "one of the most intoxicating, least predictable bands on the scenetoday," the CMB—saxophonist Ron Blake, keyboardist Geoffrey Keezer, anddrummer Terreon Gully—have been collectively evolving McBride's all-inclusive,forward-thinking outlook on music through their incendiary live shows, aschronicled on 2006’s Live at Tonic. Part excursion, part education, the CMB is avehicle built on a framework of experience and powered by unfettered creativity: amesmerizing dance on the edge of an electro-acoustic fault line.

In 2009 McBride began focusing this same energy through a more traditional lenswith the debut of his critically-acclaimed Inside Straight quintet, and again with theChristian McBride Big Band, whose 2012 release The Good Feeling won theGRAMMY for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Album. As his career entered its thirddecade, McBride added the role of mentor, tapping rising stars pianist ChristianSands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. for the Christian McBride Trio’s GRAMMY-nominated album Out Here.

Currently he hosts and produces “The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian” onSiriusXM satellite radio and National Public Radio’s “Jazz Night in America,” aweekly radio show and multimedia collaboration between WBGO, NPR and Jazz atLincoln Center, showcasing outstanding live jazz from across the country.

Whether behind the bass or away from it, Christian McBride is always of the music. From jazz (Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson,McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, to R&B(Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and onlyGodfather of Soul himself, James Brown) to pop/rock (Sting, Paul McCartney, CarlySimon, Don Henley, Bruce Hornsby) to hip-hop/neo-soul (The Roots, D'Angelo,Queen Latifah) to classical (Kathleen Battle, Edgar Meyer, Shanghai Quartet,Sonus Quartet), he is a luminary with one hand ever reaching for new heights, andthe other extended in fellowship—and perhaps the hint of a challenge—inviting usto join him.

STEVE KATZ$20.00 Sunday 5/17 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Guitarist, Vocalist, and original member of legendary rock groupBlood, Sweat, & Tears brings his solo show to the Nighttownstage!Steve Katz started at 15, studying guitar with Reverend Gary Davis. Steve wouldsometimes act as road manager for Reverend Davis and met many of the great“rediscovered” blues men like Son House, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt.

Steve starting playing in Greenwich Village - during this time there were numerousmusicians obsessed with American roots music. Steve, Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian andDavid Grisman – who found the common denominator in jug band music. They and someother friends formed the Even Dozen Jug Band and were courted by Elektra Records forwhom they recorded an album in 1964.

Steve was asked to audition for the Danny Kalb Quartet. He got the job. Al Kooper joined, and they had the Blues Project, a foray of young white middle-class musicians into theamplified world of Chicago blues. The Blues Project, after two glorious years as houseband at the Cafe Au Go Go, decided to break up.

After the Blues Project, Steve, Al Kooper, Bobby Colomby and Jim Fielder decided to workup a set, mainly of Al’s new songs, for a benefit concert whereby enough money would beraised to send Al to London where he wanted to live. Joined by Fred Lipsius on alto sax,the concert raised enough money for Al to get a cab to the airport. There was no choicebut start another band. Influenced by the Electric Flag and the Buckinghams, a hornsection was utilized with rock arrangements that were a touch more sophisticated. Thus, the formation of Blood, Sweat & Tears, a Columbia Records contract, and the album Childis Father to the Man. Recorded and mixed in only two weeks, the album sold moderatelywell but was a huge critical success.

Al left BS & T after only six months. Getting the record company to continue with the bandwithout Kooper was difficult. Auditions were held and David Clayton-Thomas was hired.Columbia reluctantly agreed to go ahead with a new album. That album sold six millioncopies worldwide and fostered three number one singles. Steve continued with BS & T forfive years, during which time the group won three Grammies, were voted best band bythe Playboy Jazz and Pop Poll two years in a row, and won three major Downbeat awards,to name a few. Steve wrote many songs during his tenure with BS&T, including his well-loved “Sometimes in Winter”.

In 1972 Steve met Lou Reed and became friends. Steve was asked to produce his nextrecord Rock & Roll Animal and then Sally Can’t Dance. After a number of productionsduring this period, including the wonderful Nightlights by Elliott Murphy, Steve wanted toreturn again to playing music.

Although American Flyer was not a performing band, it gave Steve another creative outletin which to work and talented people to work with. Steve was joined by writer Eric Kaz,Craig Fuller from Pure Prairie League, and Doug Yule from The Velvet Underground. Thefirst of their two albums was produced by George Martin.

Steve was offered an opportunity to get closer to the business of music in 1977 with hisappointment as East Coast Director of A&R and later as Vice President of MercuryRecords.

Later Steve became enamored with all things Irish and in 1987 became Managing Directorof Green Linnet Records, the foremost record label of traditional Irish music in America.

Steve still performs, is a professional photographer, and is now in the process of writinghis memoirs.

His personalphilosophy of music has kept his playing fresh and exciting and makes each of hispersonal appearances or recordings a special event.
