1. EXCELLENT SCIENCE

1.1. European Research Council

1.1.1. ERC Starting Grant (ERC-2014-STG)

- Scope: ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal

Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own

independent research team or programme. This action is open to young

researchers (2-7 years after PhD) of any nationality who intend to conduct their

research activity in any Member State or Associated Country. The ERC's

frontier research grants operate on a 'bottom-up' basis without predetermined

priorities. The call 'ERC-2014-STG' consists of one call with a single deadline

applying to each of the three main research domains:

- Physical Sciences & Engineering (Panels: PE1 – PE10)

- Life Sciences (Panels: LS1 – LS9)

- Social Sciences & Humanities (Panels: SH1 – SH6).

- Funding available: EUR 485,039,385

- Eligible researchers:

- Young researchers who shall have been awarded their first PhD at least

2 and up to 7 years prior to the publication date of the call for proposals

of the ERC Starting Grant

- A competitive Starting Grant Principal Investigator must have already

shown the potential for research independence and evidence of

maturity. For example, it is expected that applicants will have produced

at least one important publication without the participation of their PhD

supervisor.

1.2. Future and Emerging Technologies

1.2.1. Call “FETOPEN 1 – 2014/2015: FET-Open research projects”, p. 6

- Scope: This call aims to support early-stage joint science and technology

research for radically new future technological possibilities. It is entirely non-

prescriptive with regards to the nature or purpose of the technologies that are

envisaged and thus targets mainly the unexpected. A bottom-up selection

process will build up a diverse portfolio of projects. The call will support a

large set of early stage, high risk visionary science and technology

collaborative research projects which is necessary for the successful

exploration of new foundations for radically new future technologies.

- Expected impact: The funded projects should initiate a radically new line of

technology by establishing Proof-of-Principle of a new technological

possibility. Additionally, it shall kick-start an emerging innovation eco-system

of high-potential actors.

- Type of action: Research and Innovation Actions (100% funded)

- Funding available: 154 million Euros = 77 million Euros for the first deadline

1.2.2. Call “FETHPC 1 - 2014: HPC Core Technologies, Programming Environments

and Algorithms for Extreme Parallelism and Extreme Data Applications” (FET-

Proactive - towards exascale high performance computing), p.20

- Scope: This call aims as at contributing to the achievement of achievement of

the full range of technological capabilities needed for delivering a broad

spectrum of extreme scale HPC systems. The designs of these systems need to

respond to critical demands of energy efficiency, new delivery models, as well

as to the requirements of new types of applications, including extreme-data

applications. At least one of four different topics need to be addresses (see call

for details).

- Expected impact: The funded projects should contribute to the realisation of

the ETP4HPC Strategic Research Agenda and strengthen thus European

research and industrial leadership in HPC technologies.

1.3. Work programme “Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions”

1.3.1. Call “Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (ITN)”, H2020-

MSCA-ITN-2014, pg.5

- Scope: ITN supports joint research training and/or doctoral programmes,

implemented by partnerships of universities, research institutions, research

infrastructures, businesses or SMEs. The programme should exploit

complementary competences of the participants, and enable networking

activities, the organisation of workshops and conferences to facilitate sharing

of knowledge, new skills acquisition and the career development of

researchers.

- Expected impact: ITN will create and contribute to high-quality innovative

research and doctoral training, build capacity, and have a structuring effect

throughout Europe and beyond.

- Type of action: Marie Skłodowska-Curie action.

- Funding available: 405.18 million Euros from the 2014 budget. Of this

amount, 25.5 million is allocated to European Industrial Doctorates and 30

million is allocated to European Joint Doctorates.

- Duration: The maximum duration of support will be four years from the

starting date specified in the Agreement.

- Eligible consortium partners: Participants in ETN and EJD resulting from this

call are NOT required to conclude a consortium agreement, as the main focus

of activities is on research training and career development.

- Scope: Support is foreseen for individual, trans-national fellowships awarded

to the best or most promising researchers for employment in EU Member

States or Associated Countries. Fellowships are either European Fellowships

or Global Fellowships; the latter are based on a secondment to a third country

and a mandatory 12 month return period to a European host.

- Expected impact: The fellowship will contribute to realising the full potential

of researchers and to catalysing significant development in their careers in both

the academic and non-academic sectors.

- Type of action: Marie Skłodowska-Curie action.

- Funding available: 240.50 million Euros from the 2014 budget. Of this

amount, 29 million is allocated to Global Fellowships.

- Duration: IF European: 12-24 months; IF Global: 12-24 months for the

outgoing phase plus 12 month return phase in Europe.

- Scope: The RISE scheme will promote international and inter-sector

collaboration through research and innovation staff exchanges, and sharing of

knowledge and ideas from research to market (and vice-versa) for the

advancement of science and the development of innovation. RISE involves

organisations from the academic and non-academic sectors, based in Europe

(EU Member States and Associated countries) and outside Europe (third

countries).

- Funding available: 70 million Euros from the 2014 budget.

- Duration: The maximum duration of support will be four years from the

starting date specified in the Agreement.

- Eligible consortium partners: Participants in actions resulting from this call are

NOT required to conclude a consortium agreement, as the main focus of

activities is on staff exchanges.

1.4.1. Call “INFRAIA-1-2014/2015: Integrating and opening existing national and

regional research infrastructures of European interest”, p.14

- Scope: The aim of this action is to bring together, integrate on European scale,

and open up key national and regional research infrastructures to all European

researchers, from both academia and industry, ensuring their optimal use and

joint development. Funding will be provided to support, in particular, the trans-

national and virtual access activities provided to European researchers (and of

researchers from Third Countries under certain conditions), the cooperation

between research infrastructures, scientific communities, industries and other

stakeholders, the improvement of the services the infrastructures provide, the

harmonisation, optimisation and improvement of access procedures and

interfaces.

- One or, where appropriate, more of several areas listed shall be addressed. One

of the areas is: European laboratory astrophysics

- Expected impact: Researchers will be provided with a wider, simplified, and more

efficient access to the best research infrastructures they require to conduct their

research, irrespective of location.

1.4.2. Call “INFRASUPP-3-2014 - Strengthening the human capital of research

infrastructures (Support to innovation, human resources, policy and international

cooperation), p.42

- Scope: The activity will support the training of staff managing and operating

research infrastructures. A proposal under this topic should build on the past

activities and the experience gained in the projects such as RAMIRI (Realising

and Managing International Research Infrastructures). It should engage with

universities and prepare curricula and courses specifically for pan-European

research infrastructures to address their intercultural and interdisciplinary

nature as well as their diversity (global, highly distributed, single site etc.). A

significant use of interactive online training material should be considered.

- Expected impact: This activity will improve and professionalise the training of

the staff managing and operating research infrastructures of European interest,

strengthen the human capital of the involved research infrastructures,

stimulating their efficient management and therefore promoting their

development and competitiveness at national, European and international level.

- Scope: This research infrastructures activity will focus on a number of key

third countries seen as strategic for the development, exploitation and

management of world-class research infrastructures. The G8+O5 countries6

plus Australia, singularly or in their entirety, for the purposes of the Group of 6Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States), Brazil, China, India,

Mexico, and South Africa.

Senior Officials (GSO) on Global Research Infrastructures, are also included,

support of bilateral cooperation on research infrastructures with Africa. The

proposal shall build on the past experience and achievements gained in the

Seventh Framework Programme project PAERIP (Promoting African –

European Research Infrastructure Partnerships).

- Expected impact: This activity will mainly develop cooperation with key

international partners for research infrastructures.

2.1. Work programme “Information and Communication Technologies”

2.1.1. Call “ICT 4 - 2015: Customised and low power computing”, p. 13

- Scope: The main scope are projects focusing on the development of low power

computing continuum spanning embedded systems, mobile devices, desktops,

data centres, etc. Beyond performance, optimisation should include energy

efficiency, timecriticality, dependability, data movement, security and cost-

effectiveness. Innovation Actions should aim at stimulating broad adoption of

customised low power computing technologies. Support actions should focus

on cross-sectorial cooperation, clustering of related research projects and

dissemination of programme achievements.

- Expected impact: The expected impact is to reinforce and broaden Europe's

strong position in low-power computing and to reduce thus energy

consumption.

2.1.2. Call “ICT 7 - 2014: Advanced Cloud Infrastructures and Services” (Advanced

Computing), p.19

- Scope: The aim is to develop infrastructures, methods and tools for high

performance, adaptive cloud applications and services that go beyond the

current capabilities. Proposals should respond to the advent of faster and more

efficient machines, rising heterogeneity of access modes and devices, demand

for low energy solutions, widespread use of big data, federated clouds and

secure multi-actor environments including public administrations.
