Thank You!

32 veterans were honored at the 2015 Veteran’s Day Salute. They were praised for their loyal service in a program featur-ing prayers by Rev. Charlie Guy and Elder Tracy Francis of Siloam Baptist Church, music by Voices of Faith from First Con-gregational Church, and a moving speech by Col. Anthony Aiken (Ret., U.S. Army). Col. Aiken, former Sr. Environmental Science Officer, told of his life’s journey and the challenges he faced after learning that he was losing his sight. A true testi-mony, it helped everyone to be grateful for what we do have. Each veteran received a Certificate of Appreciation pre-sented by sponsors, Christopher Clark of Gentiva Hospice, and Sandra Reese of Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home, along with Patricia Williams, SGM board member.

Longevity, grace and wisdom were on dis-play at our 15th annual 96 & Above Cele-bration on Oct. 16. The program shone a spotlight on all those residents of Sadie G. Mays who are 96 years old and above. This time, four centenarians were featured: Corrine Howell, 101, Arilia Mahone, 101,(dec.), Edith Pettaway, 101 and Gennie Shef-field, 100, along with three other residents who were not able to attend, Gladys Brown, 102, Ardie Dykes, 99 and Ruby Jackson, 98 (dec.). The 96 & Above Celebration was pre-

sented by Emily Wise of the Dixie Hills Baptist Church and her extended family. This was the 15th year that Ms. Wise, her family, and fellow church members have or-ganized the event to honor the eldest of the elders at Sadie G. Mays. One of the honor-ees, Corrine Howell said “I thank God for keeping me this long, ’cause he’s the one that’s keeping me!” The program was at-tended by about 65 people and included scripture, songs, poetry and smooth jazz played by Roderick Kelly, a nephew of Ms. Wise and his band. Each honoree received a Phoenix Award from Mayor Kasim Reed.

As their name implies, Cornucopia Ministry of the Word of Faith Fam-ily Worship Cathedral (WOF), serves up an abundance of bless-ings. Since partnering with Sadie G. Mays in 2015, the group has provided many blessings to the facility such as landscaping and planting flowers, vol-unteering on Hands On Atlanta Day to paint, clean and do artwork with the residents; bringing turkeys and all the “fixin’s” at Thanksgiving; and sponsor-ing the monthly birthday parties. Led by Dr. Fran Reeves, the community outreach ministry has truly lived up to the Christian ideal - love thy neighbor. We thank them and Bishop Dale Bron-ner, Founder and Sr. Pastor, WOF, for being part of our Sadie G. Mays family!
