PRESIDENT’S REPORT
What a year!
It was a great honour for me to be elected as the President of Hornsby Rugby Club at
last year’s AGM, A challenging job at times but one that is made easier by the guidance
and support of the Committee and the constant stream of willing volunteers that lend a
hand wherever they are required.
2018 was a momentous year for the club to say the least, giving us plenty to celebrate both
on and off the field. The season was capped off with your club being named Club of the Year
by the CCRU and our First Grade team being named Team of the Year by the CCRU Referees
Association at the annual presentation dinner. In addition to this, Sam White was
named Most Outstanding Back of the CCRU representative team. These awards are a
reflection of the club’s very positive culture and input into advancing the game and the spirit
of rugby on the Central Coast.
The rekindling of the relationship and subsequent signing of a Memorandum of
Understanding with Saunaka Village, Fiji was certainly a highlight. Negotiations were
spearheaded by our Treasurer, Tim Burns who also visited Saunaka during the junior
club’s recent tour of Fiji. The significance of this mutually beneficial partnership cannot be
overstated.
Although most of the ground work and heavy lifting took place before my time, the official
opening of the clubhouse at Mark Taylor oval was another highlight. It marked the
culmination of years of hard work, planning and fundraising by Hornsby Rugby as a whole! A
testament to what can be achieved when we work together and is now a special space that
we can all enjoy for years to come!
Both of these events represent landmark moments in our club’s history and ones that put
us in very good stead leading into the future.
Although we may not be the wealthiest club on the coast or have the biggest playing
roster, the culture that we have at Hornsby is still the envy of all clubs who visit. I’m told
every week by opposition officials and players alike that playing Hornsby is a highlight on
their rugby calendars because “Hornsby is what Rugby is all about!”
In my eyes, this is one of the greatest compliments a club can receive. It is truly a reflection
of everybody who has ever been involved in the club whether it be as a player, a
spectator or a supporter in any capacity. I think it’s something that we can all be proud of
and for that, I thank you!
I’d like to recognise The Hornsby Inn as our major sponsor for their ongoing support
and contribution to this culture. The Inn provide us with unrivalled hospitality after each and
every home game as well as a venue for our fundraisers throughout the year.
All of our sponsors, existing and new to 2018 continued to contribute above and beyond
our expectations. It wasn’t uncommon to see members of businesses that support our
club having a good time at the games and functions with a couple even pulling on a red,
black and gold jersey and playing! We simply couldn’t do what we do without them and I
look forward to strengthening these relationships for the future.
Our community engagement has never been stronger. This is in no small part thanks to the
efforts of Alex Bellamy as our social media officer. She has done an outstanding job of
managing our social media profiles which are just exploding with content and the list of
friends of the HRC following our fortunes from near and far grows daily! With the
development of a revamped club website currently underway, the reach of Hornsby Rugby
in the age of information will continue to grow!
As for coaching, we saw a changing of the guard after the 2017 season with Tod Wills
departing the club after several years as Head coach. Tod remains a great friend of Hornsby
Rugby and is his name is held in in high esteem as one of the all-time greats of our club. I
thank him sincerely for his loyal service and wish him well in his future endeavours.
Anthony Woutersz stepped into the vacant 2nd grade coaching position caused by
Pete White’s promotion to 1st Grade coach and Sam White and Lachy Skulander continued
their tireless work as co-coaches of the women’s side. All have done a fantastic job of
establishing the Hornsby Lions and Nalas as genuine contenders in the Central Coast
competition.
On the field, our men’s teams enjoyed their most successful season since moving to the
Central Coast. Bolstered by Saunaka imports, Peniona “Ben” Toga and Viliame “Bill”
Seuseu Ravouvou, our 1st Grade side stamped their mark on the competition causing a
number of “upsets” (Larry Thompson’s words, not mine!) along the way. The team knocked
some heavily favoured opposition out of finals contention towards the end of the season
earning them the endearing nickname, The Hornsby Heartbreakers.
Our women’s Team, The Nalas continue to go from strength to strength! Building on their
efforts at a handful of tournaments in 2017 they have graduated from a group of girls new
to the game to a competitive, fully fledged team and earned a reputation on the Central
Coast as a dominant force against some strong opposition in the inaugural Women’s
7s competition. They make up an important part of the Hornsby Rugby pride and are
essentialto the club’s continuing success.
A number of our male and female players were selected for representative duties this year
including our 1st grade captains Sam White and Angus Macqueen who were selected in the
Central Coast team and Angela Marando who was recognised as a stand out at the country
championships and selected as a member of the Country Cockatoos squad. An outstanding
achievement!
With a fantastic new clubhouse and a historic international partnership reinvigorated
contributing to one of our most successful years in recent memory. Hornsby Rugby is poised
to do great things in 2019.
Tim Graham Robinson
CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
The 2018 season was a mixed bag for Hornsby Lions. We had some soaring highs and
crushing lows. As a club it was good to see pleasing results out on the pitch to back the hard
work our committee and coaching staff do behind the scenes. It’s unmeasurable how
important the work of the committee is to this football club and they should be rightly
recognised. Unfortunately, we find that the work of many gets left to the few. Moving
forward to next year I would like to see a greater club spirit being shown with an emphasis
on “sharing the load” to build a bigger, better club in 2019.
As club captain I couldn’t have got through the year without the help of Sam White and
Danny Coombes, stepping in when I couldn’t make it (and even when I could!). Although the
duties of the role are quite limited to game day/night, I would like to see this role expanded
to a committee role. There is potential for leading some sort of Social Committee, which
puts together social events post-rugby. Achieving this would be a big step forward for
Hornsby Rugby.
The core group within the club all decided to throw the boots on this year which made a
huge difference, allowing us to push each other to better ourselves. Combining this with a
bevy of new faces and new coaches, the feeling was brewing that a successful year was on
the cards. On the field, we started the year with a ripping pre-season led by new first grade
coaches Pete White, Miles Astley and Greg Harris. I’m sure we won’t forget the amount of
running we did any time soon, but it put us in good stead for the Lakes 7s and the results
showed, going down in the Bowl Final.
The season itself, I believe, can be considered a success with for the first time our women’s
7s team, The Nalas, playing alongside the grade boys week in week out. It was great seeing
the support for the girls from the boys and especially vice versa. It was, however,
disappointing to see as winter started to take hold, the numbers dropping off from training
and then eventually only having a Thursday training. I can guarantee that at the other clubs
this is not happening, and we should aim to make that the case here. We owed it to Pete,
Miles, Greg, Anthony Wourtesz, Danny, Dale MacAndrew, Sam and Lachy Skulander to give
them the time and effort that they gave to us.
However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. With the majority paying rego early and
having a strong financial base the foundation has been set for the season of 2019 and the
future looks bright. A special training session with the u/16s shows that there is a good Colts
side just around the corner and numbers were growing as the year got on. Having 3 grades
and a Colts without diluting the talent pool is essential and I feel we’re on the precipice of
this eventuating.
To finish I’d like to thank anyone who played, coached, spectated, sold beer, cooked a BBQ,
set up the field. Without you we would have no club.
Yours in Rugby,
Mitch “Sluggo” Fullagar
FIRST GRADE COACH’S REPORT
Our First Grade side have plenty to be optimistic about going forward into next season.
While we finished a disappointing 8th on the ladder, we were competitive all year and
troubled all teams. With four gritty wins and some heartbreaking losses, the boys can feel
confident that they are on the brink of a new era at Hornsby Rugby. Winning is a habit and
these boys will be tasting a lot more of that next season I am sure.
We had a few obstacles to hurdle early on. We lost our champion little half back, Benny
Astley, in the first few minutes of the first game of the year, with a season ending ACL injury.
We used seven different half backs throughout the season. Funny how such a small human
can leave such a giant hole in our team. Most of these boys had never played number 9
before but did so with distinction when called upon to help out.
We then lost our long time second rower Arron Duncan in the following game with the same
injury. Another regular gone for the season. These were just two, of a handful of season-
ending, or long-term injuries, that tested our depth and resilience in the early part of the
year.
So, a rocky start, but to the boy’s credit they rallied every week and put in 100%. We won
some games we weren't meant to win (our wins are called 'upsets' on the Central Coast).
And we lost some games I believe we definitely should have won. That's footy.
A problem for our senior team in recent years is our scrum and in particular fielding a
competitive front row. We have always had outstanding backs, but they have seen little
quality ball to show us what they can do. This again was the case in the early part of the
season with our Vice Captain Angus Macqueen needing a bit more muscle around him up
front. But that changed as the year progressed. It was great to get prop Jack Vandersteen
back mid-season in the Red Black and Gold. The demise of Penrith in the Shute Shield saw a
couple of Jack’s mates follow him to the Rock and slot straight into our scrum. Add to that a
couple of big boppers from our renewed ties with the village of Saunaka in Fiji - enter the
'Flowerpot Men'- Bill and Ben, who were a massive injection of raw strength and power in
the last half of our season. So, our tight five was sorted. We also have some of the best
loosies on the coast in my humble opinion. Lead by lineout king Lachy 'Skull' Skulander at 8,
we had the likes of Johnny King, Toby Forde, Mudgey, Tim GR and the find of the year, 0llie
Jenkins, working tirelessly around the field.
Through our now revitalised scrum and lineout our backs were getting plenty of ball and the
tries started coming. With our injury situation I asked these guys to play all over the place to
fill holes. Which they did without question. Lead by First Grade Captain Sam White at 10, we
had some great steppers and speedsters doing their thing - Mitch Fullagar, Jono O'Donnell,
Chris O'Rourke, Harry Fox, and another great find for us - Jack Woodrow. There were a few
other guys playing in the backline at various times of course, but these guys were the
backbone of our backline.
On paper we have such a great side. But it was in the head space area that occasionally let
us down, and in tight games a few mistakes here and there can prove the difference. But all
these guys and anyone else who pulled on the first’s jumper this year should be proud of
their efforts. Also worth mentioning are our two team leaders Sam White and Gus
Macqueen making the Central Coast rep team which won the Richardson Shield in Warren
mid-season in the NSW Country Championships. Well done to these guys, proving there is a
genuine representative pathway on the coast for those that feel they are ready for higher
honours.
Behind the scenes of course there was lots of help to get these boys on the park and
competitive every week. Miles Astley doing some great work with the backs. Tommy Forde
doing some sterling work with the forwards. Greg 'Snorts' Harris who works tirelessly doing
just about everything - from warming the boys up, running fitness, running water on game
day and generally sticking a rocket up guys who need it. Gordon Foubister is always a very
calming influence as manager. Thank you to all these gentlemen for your help and advice
throughout the year. Also, a big thank you to Michael Ho-Shon for his continued support
getting our boys ready for battle, attending to their injuries on the field and even running
out the kicking tee. We could not get through game day without Michael’s help.
Vital to our success going forward is a genuine competition for all spots. No one should get
cosy in first grade. For that to happen we need a strong second and third grade and, most
importantly - a colt’s team. This should be, above all else, our main focus for 2019.
We lost our last game of the year in a tight one against The Lakes, but rather than a
depressed and frustrated change room after the match, it was a happy one. There was a
genuine feeling of achievement and optimism amongst the group and most were already
talking about next year. All signs point towards 2019 being a big one for Hornsby Rugby.

2ND GRADE COACH’S REPORT
The preparation for the 2018 season wasn’t the best for 2nd grade. I was getting concerned
at the end of March that Hornsby Rugby Club may not even field a 2nd grade this year, let
alone a 3rd grade.
However, come to the 1st round on the 7th of April we managed to pull a team together
including our Manager Sprinkles who pulled the boots on again for the team. Our first game
of the season was at Warnervale who are always a fairly aggressive side. The lack of proper
preparation showed on the field and unfortunately the scoreboard didn’t go our way.
Over the next few weeks we gathered more and more players and were very close to
fielding a 3rd grade side, but with the high injury toll in 1st grade the numbers just didn’t add
up.
With a mixture of 2nd and 3rd grade players combining to field a team we had our challenges
along the way but always put in and showed a never give up attitude.
We had a number of younger players this year including Josh Webster, Ryan Crawford,
Jackson Singh and Jacko Cole who more than held their own playing grade Rugby.
There were a number of highlights during the season including a gutsy win against Woy Woy
at home and also a nail biter against our closest rivals the Kariong Wanderers.
There were a lot of individual stand out efforts including our new young gun Jacko Cole who
would never take a backward step in bringing down the largest opponent on the park.
Jackson’s technique and enthusiasm made him a key member of this team.
Cale Maxwell is a player that just goes out there and gets the job done and is usually picking
himself up from under the bottom of a ruck when a try is scored after he has just pinched
the ball. This is why a lot of his work goes unseen. It would be in most winger’s worst
nightmares to have their heads were Cale puts his every game and after playing the Lakes
you could see why. I’m sure Cale will be back next year to do it all again as he only has a
couple of games left to become a Centurion.
Jayden Stevenson with his pure strength and dominance carried the ball up time and time
again with no fear (even with a broken arm).
Brad Harris (when he wasn’t injured) showed a lot of leadership qualities in the forwards as
did Ben Davey with his speed and natural talent in whatever position he was called upon to
play.
Paea was lightning in the back line and his defence had the opposition thinking twice.
The two Sam’s, Whitaker and Fox, held their own and played consistently throughout the
season. Sam Fox was called upon to play in the backs again from time to time and led by
example even though he needs a new shoulder.
Mudge is another player who is constantly there doing his thing which he is very good at and
most of the time finds the space to get through the defensive line or is there in support for
his team mates.
I would also like to congratulate the two 2nd grade players who became Centurions this year,
Alan Pene and Chris Kramer have now been acknowledged as playing 100 games for
Hornsby Rugby Club. Becoming a Centurion is a huge milestone and is something that all
players that play for Hornsby should strive to do.
I could go on and on with the positives of this team and I’m sorry for the guy’s I haven’t
mentioned but we had so many players throughout the season that I just can’t mention
everyone. Maybe Lenny’s red card for instructing the ref on how to manage the scrum
should have a small mention…
I thank all of you who strapped on the boots for 2nd grade this year and making it what it
was.
Personally, I would like to thank Dale McAndrew for his ongoing support and assistance in
coaching the team and Steve Dwyer (Sprinkles) for managing the team and washing the
jerseys every week. I would also like to thank Danny Coombes who also assisted Dale while I
was ill. I thank these guys as well as the whole team for their messages and support during
the time I was sick.
Lastly, I would like to thank James “Garnzy/Goldie” Garnett who led 2nd grade this year. I
asked James prior to the 1st round if he was willing to do this for me as I know he has it in
him to be a leader, to train hard and to lead by example on and off the field. There were
games when he got frustrated but he shook it off and got back into it the next week. James
is now a senior player at this Club and took the younger guys under his wing and looked
after them and was encouraging to them. Thanks for running the team, especially the
backline.
I wish you all well over the off season.

WOMENS RUGBY – THE NALAS – COACHES REPORT
The 2018 season was the Nalas’ sophomore year and it was a season of highs and lows for
the team.
With the introduction of the Central Coast Rugby Union’s Women’s Competition, the team
had the opportunity to play weekly games in a home and away format for competition
points. This exciting opportunity was a major draw card for players and the team developed
well as a unit from the regular field time together.
Coaches Lachlan Skulander and Sam White ensured the team was prepped for the increased
demands of a weekly competition through a solid preseason and gala days early in the year.
The coaches’ insight into rugby and passion for developing the skills of each and every player
enabled the Nalas to take to the field each week confident in their ability to match it against
their opposition, whoever they may be.
There were a number of new faces joining the team in 2018, with a squad of 23 players
taking to the field throughout the winter season. The depth of the squad was a major
contributor to the Nalas’ ability to compete week in week out despite a spate of injuries.
Opening the season with two home game wins against Ourimbah Women’s team, the Nalas
continued to fight throughout the 18 rounds. Playing 30 games throughout the season, the
team finished with 10 wins and 18 losses. They came up against some quality opposition
throughout the season however their sportsmanship and commitment to playing clean footy
was a standard feature of their games throughout.
Best and Fairest for the year was Mellina Auroux, whose consistency in both attack and
defence and communication was key to the Nalas’ on field successes throughout the season.
The team finished the competition in 5th place and were unfortunate not to make finals.
While a core base of 8 players formed the spine of the Nalas’ 2018 Winter team, the team’s
injury bench was occupied by some formidable talent. It can be said that come 2019, the
injection of players returning from injury will go a long way to boosting the Nala’s position
on the competition ladder. Of particular mention is Caitlin Loughhead, who was leading the
Best and Fairest count for her inspirational work in the breakdown every game until
suffering a shoulder injury half way through the season. The team also lost Captain Alex
Bellamy to a season ending ACL injury prior to the first round.
The remainder of 2018 saw the Nalas seeking to better their performances at Scone 7s and
Blue Mountains 7s, where they finished 6th and 3rd in 2017 respectively.
The Nalas continued to contribute to the talent pathways of representative rugby again this
year. Alex Bellamy, Angela Marando and Alice Goldsack were all regular participants in the
Central Coast Rugby 7s Academy program, honing their skills against the Australian
Development Squad. Angela Marando was selected to represent the Central Coast at
Country Championships where she made the Merit Squad for the Tournament. Alice
Goldsack was first reserve for Country Championships and unfortunately Alex Bellamy’s
injury saw her ruled out of the tournament.
Additionally, Caitlin James was selected to trial for the NSW School Girls 7s team and took
away valuable experience from this.
The Nalas were again privileged to be sponsored by CrossFit Taipan Mount Ku Ring-Gai, who
assisted the players with their strength and conditioning work. The support from CrossFit
Taipan, both in use of their facility and training, was invaluable in promoting the
performance of the team on field.
After two successful years with the team, both Sam and Lachlan are stepping away from the
role of coach, as they believe the team needs a coaching staff that can dedicate their full
attention to the team’s growth and development.
The Nalas move forward into 2019 and beyond with the goal of building the squad’s core
skills and fitness levels so each player starts from the same foundation. From there, the
team is looking to develop specialisation in specific roles on the field for a direct and
cohesive on field performance.

TREASURER’S REPORT
2018 was a great success financially for the club. Our expenditure and income basically
doubled in 2018. We have finished the year in a strong position, having $15,000 in the bank,
with the only outstanding payment being a transfer for $1,400 to the Katoa family.
Of note was the establishment of a linked account containing the Women’s Rugby sports
grant money received this year ($7,000). This should assist in maintaining traceability.
A key difference to the financial performance this year was Rugby Australia’s introduction of
an online payment portal, integral to the registration process. All registrations are online
and a registration cannot be completed without payment at the time. This greatly increased
the amount of registration payments taken, in fact over $12,000 was received back from the
ARU once insurance and participation levies were deducted. This is contrary to previous
years. The club card was used to subsidise 25 registration payments, with the players in
question contributing approximately 50% of the subsidized payments throughout the year.
Sponsorship was strong with $24,000 received. Main sponsors were The Hornsby Inn,
Motorway Civil, Brydie Automotive, Creighton’s, Australian Sheet Metal Innovations, JAC
Electrical and TEDS.
The canteen was excellent with income of $40,000 and costs of $20,000. Fundraisers (being
The Long Lunch and Centurions dinner 2017) netted around $4,000. Donations towards the
Katoa family were taken through the club account, and $1,400 has been set aside to transfer
to the family when appropriate. Donations of $1,350 were received for our Saunaka Rugby
initiative. $8,250 in sports grants was received consisting of $7,000 for women’s rugby and
$1,250 for a defibrillator.
With greater activity throughout the year, costs also increased to the benefit of the club.
Main investments were $1,000 towards a new fridge and vacuum cleaner for the clubhouse,
$2,000 towards the new website (total cost $4,000) as well as approximately $8,000 towards
the Saunaka initiative. A memorandum of understanding was signed with Saunaka Rugby
early in the year after Ponijese Rayasi established contact after a long drought since the mid-
nineties. Saunaka supplied two players to Hornsby (Peniona Toga and Viliame Seuseu
Ravouvou) whilst Hornsby rugby purchased approximately $6,000 of equipment for Saunaka
Rugby as well as covering Peniona and Viliame’s return flights. This brought a great
atmosphere to the club this year and should be pursued in 2019.
My sincere thanks to everyone who helped out on game days and at the CCRU preliminary
final with the canteen, bar and BBQ. Through your efforts we have made a good profit and
set the club on a good footing for 2019.
