Councillors support farmerCOUNCIL DECISION

Horowhenua District Council voted at itsDecember meeting last year to close theintake at theWaikawa Stream, claiming itwould save an estimated $20,000 inannual operating costs. The costs are paid for through rates by the27 landowners whose land the races flowthrough, at an estimated $740 a year perlandowner. A public consultation withlandowners prior to the council meetingsaw nine out of 13 submissions in favour ofclosure.Historic maps show the original intake wasan open channel that fed the races, supplying fresh water in pre-Europeantimes to local Maori. The intake was originally an open channel, replaced by a pipe in 1967 by council tokeep the water flow, following thestraightening of the North Manakau Roadand a new bridge built over theWaikawastream. The races are naturally forming in the mainpart with somemanmademodificationsand additions over the years.TheWaikawa water race is charged as aseparate item in the rates demand, factored on land value, to reimbursecouncil for claimed operating costs. Notesprovided by council at theMay 2013consultation meeting with landownersshowed annual costs from 2009 to 2012ranging from $4,160 to $9,075 in any oneyear. In the 2013/14 financial year, the forecastbudget spend was $25,313.

■ From page 1

“Under the Law of Equity it is illegal fora council to not fulfil its obligations toprovide an alternative water source.”

Mr Spiller said closing the intake wouldhave a huge financial impact on hisbusiness and even threaten the health ofhis 1000 deer.

His deer prefer not to drink the waterfrom his one bore in preference to the watersupplied by the water race.

He claims successive droughts havelowered the existing water table and thatthis bore is now not deep enough, so even ifhis deer did drink bore water, drilling morebores would not necessarily solve theproblem.

“If I have to buy in water, the cost will becrippling. I would gladly continue to payextra rates to keep the race open andmaintain them myself.”

While Mr Holland is currently beingcharged $1300 a year and Rob Spiller $4000to help maintain the water race, theybelieve some land owners may only becharged $100 a year, based on land value.

“Many landowners may be unawarethat, even if the intake is closed, they arestill responsible, at their own expense, tokeep the water races free of blockagesunder the Land Drainage Act 1908,” he said.

“We want to ensure that comeDecember 1 that the Waikawa water raceintake is not closed until full and properdiscussion with council, councillors, landowners and iwi is had.”

Councillors Michael Feyen and Ross

Campbell have taken up the two farmers’cause and approached council staff toconsider options to keep the water racesopen, including Holland and Spiller takingon the consent that expires in 2022.

According to Feyen, it’s a “no-brainer”that the intake, and races, stays open.

“You do not take water from farms.“I think the sensible option is to let those

interested farmers look after the consent,it’s just a pipe at the end of the day.

“I believe we [councillors] did not haveall the information we needed to make theright decision at the time and did notrealise the ramifications.”

Feyen was one of three councillors atthe time who voted against closure.

“There is the possibility for a win-winsituation,” he said.

Horowhenua District Council’s chiefexecutive David Clapperton said councildid receive legal advice regarding theclosure of the Waikawa Open Water Race, but that it would be happy to consider thelegal advice referred to by Mr Holland.

He confirmed council staff wereworking towards closure by December2014, following direct consultation withaffected landowners last year, and council’s‘democratic decision’ at its meeting lastDecember to close the Waikawa OpenWater Race by December 2014.

“In the meantime, if another partycomes up with an alternative option tokeep the water race open that wouldremove council from any responsibilityfor it, then we would be more than happyto hear from them,” Mr Clapperton said.

AHOUSINGBUBBLE?In August North andSouthmagazine ran a feature article canvassingif NZ has an over-inflated housingmarket; a “bubble.”Views variedfromJohnKey andSteven Joyce sayingwedon’t; to the IMF, theOECDandourReserveBank sayingwedo. I suggest you read thefeature andmake up your ownmind. But consider this: two importantdrivers of the housingmarketmay change. The immigration boomintoNZmay tail off asAustralia again enticesNZers across theTasmanandmortgage rateswill more than likely rise if theReserveBank continues to increase interest rates. This could see house priceinflation slowand possibly even turn negative. My point? If you areplanning to sell the family home to build or buy a smaller property you need to consider the futureoutlook for demand for such properties. Apart fromvalues possibly falling, other baby boomersmay have similar intentionswhichwill increase the supply of houses for sale.My experience isthat, even now, selling your house sometimes does not release the cash anticipated and canmeanputtingmore funds into the newer home. “Sure it’s a little moreexpensive, but perhaps it’s alltoo easy to say we can’t afford it.Can we afford to have a littleless, so someone else can have ameal? To educate people is toshow them that the true cost ofwhat we buy is far beyond whatis written on the price tag.”

He said, as a result of hisresearch his family, had startedbuying Fair Trade goodswhenever they can.

“We can address globalpoverty at a personal level if weall do our bit.”

Marinda Matthew, fromTrade Aid Education, said thejudges were pleased with thestandard of essays and Jotham’s“clearly stood out”. They weredelighted to award him the topprize, a certificate and $150, inthe junior section of the

Message from theExecutive MTA ChairI would like to inform you that Brenton Tukapua resigned as ChiefExecutive of MTA to pursue new opportunities.

In the coming weeks I expect to announce an Interim ChiefExecutive to the position to ensure the momentum of our team isnot disrupted.

In the interim I have been appointed Executive Chair to supportour staff through the transition.

We continue to make strong progress in our tribal developmentand, as noted above, in progressing our Treaty ofWaitangisettlement negotiations.

Thank you for your continued support.

Ngāmihi,LouanaWilliams, Executive MTA Chair

Treaty SettlementNegotiationsThe Muaūpoko Tribal Authority (MTA) is the mandated entity torepresent Muaūpoko Iwi in direct negotiations with the Crown forthe comprehensive settlement of the historical Treaty ofWaitangiclaims of Muaūpoko.

In December 2012 this mandate was robustly supported by87% of the Muaūpoko claimant community. The Crown gave fullrecognition of MTA’s mandate on 25 September 2013. Effectively, this kicked-off Muaūpoko’s Treaty settlement negotiations.

The time is right for Muaūpoko to settle. After much waiting sinceWai 52 was filed with theWaitaingi Tribunal (1988) it has becomeclear that direct negotiations with the Crown is the best pathwayfor Muaūpoko to resolve its outstanding claims. This view isstrengthened by seeing so many other Iwi successfully settlingwith the Crown and moving steadily forward after settlement.

Treaty Settlements are about setting a foundation for growth ofIwi and re-establishing relationship with the Crown. This is thespace MTA is aiming to move Muaūpoko Iwi into to become asignificant player in the local economy.

As part of the direct Treaty settlement negotiations, MTA signed‘Terms of Negotiation’with the Crown on 14 December 2013.This important milestone took place at Kawiu Marae through anemotive ceremony together with other activities for tamariki andrangatahi.

After signing the Terms of Negotiation, MTA started workingtowards an ‘Agreement in Principle’with the Crown. For thispurpose, in January 2014 interim negotiators were appointed. This was followed by the engagement of specialist advisors andappointment of a Claims Committee and Research Group over theFebruary-March period. The Treaty settlement negotiators wereappointed during the March-April period. These are Milly Paea,LouanaWilliams, Dr Jonathan Procter and Matthew Sword (LeadNegotiator).

On behalf of all Muaūpoko Iwi the MTA has been developing andnegotiating a settlement package with the Crown. It is importantto note that the MTA does not decide on the settlement package. The people must vote to accept this via a ratification process. It is also relevant to note that the MTA does not receive any ofthe settlement assets. These go to the new Post SettlementGovernance Entity (PSGE) that will be especially established forthese purposes. Again, the people must also vote to accept thisentity via a ratification process.

The MTA has been consulting and working together with Iwimembers to develop both a settlement package and a PSGE that,in the best way possible, represent the aspirations of MuaūpokoIwi. Since the commencement of the negotiations towards anAgreement in Principle, several hui-a-Iwi have taken place as partof the different work streams that are required. These hui includetwo Property and Cultural RedressWananga (22 March & 12 April2014); a Social and Cultural RedressWananga (3 May 2014); andtwo Post Settlement Governance EntityWananga (15 June and10 August 2014). All of these have been held at Kohuturoa Marae,Levin. The importance of these activities is that they have allowedall Iwi members to participate and walk together with the MTAthrough the pathway to settlement.

Muaūpoko whānau have been able to “tell their stories” throughtheWaitangi Tribunal’s Ngā Kōrero Tuku Iho process that tookplace in February 2014.

Currently, great progress is being achieved in different Treatysettlement work streams. This progress includes the ongoingdevelopment of historical research, property selection, cultural

and relationship redress, and the continuation of negotiatingMuaūpoko’s settlement aspirations.

Some of the recent deliverables achieved include:

• Starting to engage with Crown agencies and departments.

• Developing a draft scoping report of historical researchprepared by historian David Armstrong.

• Developing a draft PSGE trust deed and report.

• Starting to develop a draft Agreement in Principle document.

The next steps of MTA’s settlement will include:

• Finalising the PSGE trust deed.

• Finalising a draft Agreement in Principle document.

• Finalising the scoping report of historical research. Forcompleteness, the headings of research work in the draftscoping report include the following:

- Muaūpoko customary interests and the impacts of incursionsby Northern Iwi (Twentieth Century Interpretations ofMuaūpoko Customary Interests; the position at 1820; thearrival of Ngāti Toa; Ngāti Raukawa and TeWhatanui’s“allocation”of the land at Horowhenua; Te Awahou;Rangitikei-Manawatu; Himitangi; the Muaūpoko resurgence;Kukutauaki; Horowhenua and Tararua);

- Land alienation (Crown purchases – Te Awahou, Rangitikei-Manawatu and Tararua; Horowhenua Trust arrangements;the 1886 partition; the Horowhenua Commission 1896;Horowhenua Land Alienation after 1886; Levin Township;railway lands, Kepa’s debt and further Crown acquisitions;local bodies; private acquisitions; public works; the impactof title fragmentation and land loss; Hokio Native Township);and

- Lake Horowhenua.

Te KupengaYouthMentoringProgrammeTe Kupenga was designed to reconnect young Maori with theirculture by teaching them about Kaupapa Tuku Iho. To do thisrequired the re-telling of the myths and legends and the creationstories.

Every culture has its traditions about how the world was created.Māori have many of them, but the most important stories arethose that tell how darkness became light, nothing becamesomething, earth and sky were separated, and nature evolved.Through the spoken repetition of these stories, the world isconstantly being recreated.

Creation stories give people a way of looking at their world. These stories tell us about individuals acting in particular waysand securing their position in the world. They stand, therefore, asa model for individual and collective behaviour and aspirations.Legendary heroes act as exemplars of human potential. Bycapturing the sun, entering the underworld, or fishing up anisland, Māui represents the character of the individual who canbring about change and development in a community. Theascent of Tāne through the 12 heavens to obtain the baskets ofknowledge symbolises an individual striving toward insight andunderstanding.

The principle of Kaupapa tuku iho is about the way Māori values, beliefs and responsibilities are used to guide our everydaypractices; it was from this perspective that MTA staff developedthe programme content for Te Kupenga. The programme beganthis teaching by focusing onWhanaungatanga and Ūkaipōtanga,to then finish with a better understanding of Mātauranga Maori.

Whanaungatanga:- relationship, kinship, sense of familyconnection - a relationship through shared experiences andworking together which provides people with a sense ofbelonging. It develops as a result of kinship rights and obligations, which also serve to strengthen each member of the kin group. It also extends to others to whom one develops a close familial, friendship or reciprocal relationship.

Ūkaipōtanga:- The whānau define ūkaipōtanga as theimportance of knowing and strengthening connections to one’stūrangawaewae (domicile, place where one has the right to stand- place where one has rights of residence and belonging throughkinship and whakapapa).

When students are able to demonstrate a strong sense ofbelonging and connection to their tūrangawaewae, they maintainpositive interactions with whānau, hapū and iwi, and showconfidence in assuming different roles and responsibilities acrossa range of different situations.

This demonstration is evident when:-

• Students know their pepeha, mihimihi and whakapapa.

• Students know, maintain and strengthen their connections withwhānau, hapū and iwi.

• Students know and use a range of karakia and mōteatea.

• Students have strong relationships within the widercommunity.

Feedback – Received from kaimahi of other agencies involvedin the programme:

• “The Muaūpoko Staff were great and were good role modelsfor the young people. Seeing the kids learning their pepehawas a particular high for me as they didn’t know who they wereconnected to prior.”

• “Our whānau always have people knocking on their door fornegative reasons - this gave some pride to the kids and theirwhānau. It was a place that they were not judged and they weresupported to dream!”

• “The Mātauranga Maori was good for them and a valuablepiece of learning for non-Maori - I thoroughly enjoyed Te Hira’steaching. As a Police Officer of course I am always interested inlessening criminal offending and must acknowledge that theengagement and support given by the Te Kupenga programmealongside other interventions would have contributedsignificantly towards a mammoth reduction in one boy’soffending.”

• “It was great working with MTA in helping the students setgoals. We tried to set academic and behavioural goals at AkoPai and encouraged the students to set goals around personalwellbeing and interpersonal skills at MTA.”

• “It would be great if the Māori knowledge and practices(pepeha, kapa haka, etc.) they did with MTA was able to carryover into the work that we do here at Ako Pai. We had tried toimplement those things here, but weren’t able to make muchprogress.”

• “The students took fried bread to their MTA meeting onkaumatua day, it was great to see that they wanted to giveback.”

• “Their attendance was awesome because although we didn’ttolerate bad behaviour they still were respected and we didn’tgive up on them nomatter how hard it got.”

• “Consistency and continued work is the key to these kids, theymissed coming when they were given breaks…that fascinatedme that they would get upset when they were told that theycould have a break from Te Kupenga.”

Hapū UpdateThe seven Hapū that govern the Muaūpoko Tribal Authority arecurrently working toward the Treaty Settlement negotiations. Toreceive the benefits of the settlement will mean Hapū need tocome together so they can discuss the issue of setting up a newIwi organisation. This is exciting times for whanau of the Hapūbecause they will get the opportunity to shape and form theorganisation.

To support Hapū toward forming the new organisation, MTAwill provide oppportunities for whanau to participate in thisprocess. MTA will do this by meeting with whanau and by holdingreference groups to record a collective whanau voice. There is alsoa strong interest in having a collective Rangatahi voice as they areour future leaders.

Ngati Pariri are currently working on maintaining and developingtheir Marae as this belongs to the Hapū and the Iwi. Their mainproject to theWhare Kai project and their collective is interestedin delivering courses that will preserve Taonga Tuku Iho. Teachingtheir whanau how to record their history into the medium of anart form is their way of preserving and keeping the weaving skillsof Raranga alive in their Hapū. The Hapū of Ngai Te Ao have anEarly Childhood Centre , Punahau, that they have run successfullyfor 16 years. They are preserving Taonga Tuku Iho by runnningRangatahi Hui that teaches them what their iwi interests are.

The work ahead for the Hapū Coordinator is to build meaningfulrelationships with whanau within the five other Hapū that wantthe absolute best for their collective. MTA want positive outcomeswithin Hapū that support strong Hapū infrastructure which drivesthe action needed to implement Hapū initiatives and perservationof Muaupoko Taonga Tuku Iho.

Kia kaha nga Hapū o Muaūpoko!

Discharge mediationA second round ofmediation is schedulednext week for Shannon’swastewater treatmentplant discharges.

Horowhenua DistrictCouncil’s originalapplications for landdischarges on to 25hectares of an 85-hectarefarm bought for irrigatingtreated wastewater, withthe excess treatedwastewater dischargeddirectly into theManawatu River duringhigh river flows, waschallenged. Council is nowrecommending a trial oftreated wastewater

Any wastewaterdischarged to the river willbe via two land-passagesystems, an artificialwetland and a gentlysloping channel plantedwith grass, flaxes andother suitable plants thatwill avoid water beingdischarged directly from apipe to the river .

WECA chairman MikeSmith said council has set

a new benchmark inconsultation in itscommitment to removeShannon and Foxtonwastewater dischargesfrom the river.

“Every discharge tothe Manawatu Riverfinishes up in ourbackyard, and municipaleffluent is a majorcontributor. TheManawatu River LeadersAccord has been signed byall the councils in thecatchment, but onlyHorowhenua DistrictCouncil is honouring it sofar, and we are proud toassist in their effort.”

Method:1. Drain tuna, put into a bowl. Add the Edmonds

Mayonnaise and lemon juice. Mash together.

2. Cut crusts off the bread. Roll out bread usinga rolling pin until it is flattened.

3. Spoon the tuna mix in a log down the middleof the bread. Place carrot, cucumber andcapsicum on top of the tuna.

4. Roll up the flattened bread tightly to enclosethe filling.

5. Cut each roll into two pieces and arrange inthe lunchbox.

Robyn’s Super Sushi SandwichesMy kids love sushi, and often want it in their lunchboxes. This is a great shortcut if you don’t have time to cookand cool the rice. It also works well with other fillings such as Meadow Fresh cream cheese and dried apricots.

Horowhenua-Kapiti coach

By PETER FRANKLIN

The first loss of the season forHorowhenua-Kapiti againstBuller, 19-12, has not fazed theplayers, according to coach JaredTanira.

Horowhenua-Kapiti travelledto Westport to face the might of anunbeaten Buller side lastweekend in the 2014 Pink battsHeartland Rugby championships. While they lost the game, theywere not intimidated by a vocalhome crowd.

Tanira said the HK forwardsdominated the first 15 to 20minutes of the game, howeverBuller saw an opportunity andscored against the run of play.

Horowhenua-Kapiti kept intouch throughout the first halfthat ended with Buller only aheadby four points, 16-12.

In the second half, theHorowhenua-Kapiti defence wasunder huge pressure and Bullerkept plugging away, finally

forcing a penalty and addinganother three points.

This week Horowhenua-Kapitihost South Canterbury at theHorowhenua Trust Domainwhich, according to Tanira, isgoing to be a great game, and ofcourse he is hoping for fineweather and a big home crowd tosupport the team tomorrow.

“We are not taking anythingaway from them, SouthCanterbury are a top team. They

have strength right across thefield,” he said.

Tanira said HK know what hasto be done, they have not let theloss interfere with their focus.

“We talked about the mistakesthat we made against Buller, nowit’s time to park it and get focusedon the game ahead,” he said.

Tanira said players coming offthe bench have stepped up andmade a good impact on the gameand he expects the same thisweek.

“Every game is important andwe have to look at each game as itcomes.”

The game kicks off at 2pm atthe Horowhenua Trust Domain,Levin.

SERVICE DIRECTORYSERVICE DIRECTORYCarpet care at its bestCarpet composition has changeddramatically over the years —some carpet care companies havefailed to take that fact on board.

"They still use methods whichsaturate the carpet, it stays dampand smells for weeks," carpet carespecialist Roger Bloxham said.

"The smelly old chemicalmethods have been supersededbut, in saying that, there are stillsome applications that require achemical treatment.

“The important thing is know-ing which application is suitablefor what."

After nearly three decades oftaking care of Horowhenuacarpets Roger is an expert in thefield. "Generally we have goodquality carpets in New Zealand, carpeting your home is a biginvestment and looked after pro-perly lasts for years and years."

Some well-meaning ownershire carpet cleaning machines but,as Roger explains, it's oftenmoney wasted and in many

instances more expensive thangetting a professional in to do thejob properly. "The little rugcleaners you hire have a singleengine, not very powerful and doabout half the job. Professionalcleaners have two motors, they'rea powerful beast," he said.

The big machines not onlyremove more dirt, but also moreliquid so the carpet is pretty muchdry when the job is finished.

This application is also ideal forcleaning lounge suites and diningroom chairs. Unlike do-it-yourselfjobs, anything done by Rogercarries a guarantee.

From Foxton to Kapiti, Roger ishappy to bring his mobile cleaningunit at a time that suits thecustomer and can do most jobswithin three days.

Whether you live in Foxton orWaikanae the charge stays at $120for lounge, hall and dining plus$20 for each extra room. For anyqueries contact Roger Bloxham ph364-6777 or 021 838-566.

EXERCISING IN WATER

Being active is one of the best thingsyou can do to maintain your healthand quality of life. The Levin AquaticCentre has lots of activities availableso you can get active as exercising inwater is a good, whole-body exercisethat has low impact. We have lots oflocals who use the pool on a regularbasis to keep healthy.

Local Rosalee Mason is a frequentAquacise participant and keen aquajogger. She has used the facility forexercise and recovery since she had2 hip replacements, Rosalee foundthat Aqua jogging helped her afterboth operations. “Coming to the pool

was beneficial to my rehabilitation as itis low impact exercising.” says Rosalee.

Swimming offers something no otheraerobic exercise does: the ability towork your body without harsh impactto your skeletal system. When thehuman body is submerged in water,it automatically becomes lighter. Thismeans that the pool provides an idealplace to work stiff muscles and sorejoints, especially if you’re overweight orsuffer from arthritis.

Rosalee comes at least two times aweek and often does an aquacise classthen some aqua jogging afterwards.

“It’s great fun, it’s a great place toget to know people, the staff aregreat, its a great place to be! With13 years experience at the LevinAquatic Centre Rosalee believes thatthe Levin Aquatic Centre is a greatplace to be all year round.”

So come down and have a look atthe Levin Aquatic Centre and likeRosalee receive all the benefits ofexercising in water.

HAWERA’S Daryl Hurley (Suzuki), likely to again be a frontrunnerthis weekend. WWWPHOTO ANDY MCGECHAN BIKESPORTNZ.COM

Suzuki 6-hriconic raceHave you got the skills, the paceand the strength to race a dirtbike at full-throttle for half aday?

Of course you’ll also need ahuge dose of stamina to tacklethe annual Suzuki Six-HourDirt Bike Challenge thisweekend.

And even if you split theriding duties a team-mate,Saturday’s gruelling cross-country marathon is anincredibly tough proposition.

The popular marathon racein the Ohakuri Forest, off StateHighway 1, about halfwaybetween Tokoroa and Taupo, isexpected to be another classic, with an abundance of ‘star’riders keen to do battle.

Perhaps none more so thanlast year’s champion pairing ofBrad Groombridge and DarylHurley.

Taupo’s Groombridge andHawera’s Hurley won lastyear’s edition ahead of Yamahapair Adrian Smith and CallanMay, and with Groombridgeand Hurley combining againand Smith and May not entered, the Suzuki pair are obviousfavourites to make it back-to-back wins on Saturday.

However, despite their ownstar rating, 24-year-oldGroombridge and 38-year-oldHurley will come up againstsome heavyweight opposition, including last weekend’sWoodhill Two-man Cross-country series winners JoshJack (Suzuki RM250) and LukeMobberley (Gas Gas EC125),from Kaukapakapa andMuriwai Beach respectively, as

well as Auckland’s formernational enduro championChris Power (Yamaha YZ450F),who will team up withPalmerston North’s three-timeformer national cross-countrychampion Adam Reeves(Yamaha YZ450F).

In a new twist this year, riders are permitted to ridetheir own bikes, rather thanshare one bike between the twoof them, as in past seasons.

This means Groombridgeand Hurley may campaign boththeir own Suzuki RM-Z450 andRM-X450 model machines.

Waikato pair Damien Kingand Jesse Wiki finished thirdoverall on a Honda last year, while Auckland's ShaunFogarty and Raglan's JasonDickey teamed up to finishfourth for Kawasaki last yearand Aucklander SamGreenslade and Hokianga'sDamon Nield secured fifth placeoverall.

Any of several dozen two-rider crews could threaten theGroombridge/Hurley reign.

The iconic Suzuki Six-Hourwill be followed the next day bythe second annual SuzukiJunior Three-Hour race at thesame venue, although theriders will be traversing adifferent and slightly-lessdaunting route through theOhakuri Forest.

The two races are sponsoredby The Dirt Guide, Bel-Ray,Michelin tyres, Renthal bars,DRC, O’Neal apparel,Yoshimura exhausts, TCXboots, Kiwi Rider magazine andOakley goggles.

Making the most of glasshousesDiggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

SNAKE beans do well in a glasshouse.

■ Continued fromWednesday:

A quick look on Trade Me andI found both secondhand andnew glasshouses available, one anew polycarbonate double-skin12 foot by 6 foot under $800. (Iprefer an A-frame glasshouse to atunnel house after having grownin both.)

It would need a concrete floorwith a wooden base bolted to theconcrete so the frame's base canbe secured to it (your glasshouseneeds to be secured against highwinds).

Some of the small unitsadvertised would need to beplaced in a very sheltered spot asthey have little strength towithstand gales.

Shelter and warmth areimportant for growing good

tomato plants and other moreheat loving plants such ascucumbers, okra, chillies andsweet capsicums.

A glasshouse will give you theideal growing conditions if youregulate the temperature onsunny days.

It can be kept relatively free ofinsect pests if you placequarantine cloth over the ventsand doorway to prevent insectsgetting in. This allows for thedoor and vents to be open toallow airflow and help reduce thetemperature on sunny days.

You need to be careful that the

plants you bring into theglasshouse are not carrying pestinsects or their eggs. Spray theplants all over with Neem TreeOil before bringing them into theglasshouse and repeat about aweek later to kill any grubs thatmay have hatched out.

When I wrote my last bookcalled Wally’s GlasshouseGardening for New Zealand, Italked about various methods ofcooling the glasshouse down tounder 30C in summer, such aswetting the concrete pad(evaporation cools the air).

One method I have only just

realised is to use 12 volt extractorfans connected to a 12 volt solarpanel. This makes perfect senseas when the sun hits the panel itproduces electricity and runs thefan. A panel and fan could beobtained new for under $200.

Totally automatic, no sun nofan, full sun, fan at max. Youdon’t even have to turn it off atnight. Solar power is free afterset up costs and becoming aninteresting possibility to save alot of money in the long-term bygoing offgrid.

Having a glasshouse meansensuring any insect pests that getin must be controlled quickly.Use Neem Tree Granules in thegrowing medium and on top of itwhich helps a lot. At any sign ofinsects a spray of Neem Tree Oilwith Key Pyrethrum sprayedjust before sunset over all plantsin the house, including anyweeds.

You should have a smallbench in the glasshouse so youcan pot up, germinate seeds andraise seedlings. This work placeis a great boon on a winter’s daywhen your green fingers areitching.

Diseases can be a problem ifthe humidity becomes too highso good ventilation and anextractor fan will help greatly.Sprays of Liquid Copper, LiquidSulphur or Condy's crystals canalso be used. Water your plant'scontainers with a hand held softwand on your hose. The watershould be though a 10 micronbonded carbon filter to removethe chloride and fluoride poisonsfrom the water.

No matter what the weather, aglasshouse makes gardeningmore enjoyable while increasingthe range of plants you can growto obtain better results.

You will discover things suchas snake beans can do well in aglasshouse because they are selffertile unlike most otherclimbing beans.
