Every 90 minutes a New Zealander dies of Heart Disease. Today the HeartFoundation has volunteers on the street collecting money to put towards fighting NewZealand’s biggest killer. Kenneth’s story:Shannon’s Kenneth Stuart Senior wants

to get back to work, he was told he would beback within months of life saving heartsurgery, three years later he’s still on timeout.

‘‘It’s really frustrating, I’m a dad, ahusband . . . I feel like I should be working,’’Kenneth said.

‘‘Sometimes you realise too late youneed to take care of yourself when you’reyounger, you know, you have a few beers,enjoy yourself.’’ Kenneth has a hereditaryheart condition.

‘‘I didn’t know about it,’’ he said. ‘‘I’mMaori, my family don’t communicate thatwell. I lost my mum at 43, but you don’treally talk about that sort of thing.’’

Kenneth and wife Charmaine have sixchildren.

‘‘We’ve discussed it with them,’’Charmaine said. ‘‘They know it’s in thefamily, I don’t know if they totallyunderstand but our son, who is 22, haschanged his lifestyle and he’s taken it onboard.’’

Kenneth was diagnosed with hyper-tension in his 30s and medicatedaccordingly.

‘‘I’ve had pain between my shoulders foryears, it’s terrible, I used to stand upagainst the wall to relieve it,’’ Kenneth said.‘‘I never associated it with cardiac issues, Ididn’t recognise . . . ’’

Charmaine would massage herhusbands shoulders, it brought little relief.Kenneth’s older sister went in for cardiacsurgery.

‘‘She didn’t tell me about the conditionbeing in the family, she didn’t want to freakme out,’’ Kenneth said.

His own condition worsened.Eventually bypass surgery was his onlyoption. ‘‘I was told after the operation Icould return to work in a matter of months,but there were complications from thesurgery,’’ Kenneth said. ‘‘I feel I have been

given a second chance, I’m lucky to be alivebut I also know I have to flag some dreamsand aspirations. I make short-term goals,ultimately I want to go back to work, I don’tknow if that will happen.’’

Kenneth urges families to talk aboutany familial conditions, to think abouttheir future health when they are youngand don’t leave it too late.

Last week I caught up withChorus staff who are flat-outinstalling Ultra-fastBroadband (UFB) throughoutKapiti and Horowhenua.

This is a $1.5 billionproject happening across thecountry and will transformNew Zealand into a globalleader. Nowhere else in theworld is this fibre technologybeing delivered so far andwide.

In Kapiti and Levin,Chorus will have built fibre toaround 18 per cent of theirtotal build by the end of Junethis year.

They have also upgraded alot of cabinets which has beena big focus prior to therollout.

The first priority is localschools and some havealready began enjoying thebenefits of this technology.

Video conferencing andinteractive learning are justsome of the ways it can beused to enhance the waystudents are taught.

It will also be a major boostfor regional economies,allowing businesses tocommunicate and sendinformation easily to theircustomers no matter wherethey are in the world.

Fast and reliable access tothe internet is not a luxury. Itis a necessity in the 21stcentury.

Together with our newroads, rail and air links, it willmean Kapiti and Horowhenuawill be better connected thanever. I believe this willencourage more people andbusinesses to move here,enjoying the lifestyle benefitsof our region while still beingconnected to the globaleconomy. The RuralBroadband Initiative (RBI) isalso an important $300 millionproject covering areas notreached by UFB.

Support for banRegarding the fireworks ban articleon the front page of the ChronicleonFriday February 7.

I fully support Mr Sharpe andthe Kennel Association memberson their quest to ban fireworks, it istime for a total ban on privatehouse fireworks being let off andjust have displays by propermonitored organisations.

My husband and I have beensubjected to the misery of fireworksgoing off every night in our streetfor six weeks at the start of fire-works being on sale, from 9.30pm atnight until midnight until theyhave obviously ran out of them. Notpretty fireworks but noisy rocketsfiring in the air with no considera-tion for any neighbours.

We are told to keep our pets infirework night, but it just goes on.

We have a dog who wasterrified for six weeks. Wewere so distraught those sixweeks we went to the Policeand the council, it appearsnothing can be done to limit

the time fireworks can be let off.I wrote to the Minister for the

Environment and was told theMinistry will monitor the situationbut there are no plans at themoment to change things.

I think it is time to act before thenext firework season is upon us. Itis quite right that fireworks origin-ated in England with Guy Fawkesattempt to blow up Parliament.

Not really relevant to this dayand age and not relevant to NewZealand. It is time to outlaw thisoutdated farce we have to endureevery year.

Ohau Playcentre facilitatorRowena Bullen went for a heartcheck.

She was well, apart fromoccasional asthma, her BodyMass Index (BMI) was prettymuch spot on, she went walkingon a regular basis and was in her50s. It came as a shock to discovershe needed urgent heart surgeryto save her life.

‘‘If I hadn’t had that check Iwouldn’t have known there wasanything wrong,’’ Rowena, threeweeks out of surgery, toldHorowhenua Chronicle.

‘‘I had open heart surgery toreplace my aortic valve. I feelvery lucky to have discovered myproblem before I had a heartattack or worse.’’

Heart Week fell while Rowenawas recovering on sick leave butshe made a visit to OhauPlaycentre to share a speciallesson. The Playcentre won theHealth and Safety Award in lastyear’s Electra Business awards.

‘‘I want to remind the childrenof the need for healthy activityand healthy eating, and to stayfit,’’ she said.

‘‘Also to remind parents of theneed for a heart checkup.’’

The checkup is important formen 35 years and over and thesame for women from 45 years.

‘‘It can be a life-saver,’’Rowena said. ‘‘I was amazed thatpeople of any age can have heartissues, I always imagined ithappened to older overweight

people but it can be anyone.’’The prognosis for Rowena is

good, she is starting back to workslowly running the SPACEsession for mums and babies onThursday afternoons.

The little Playcentre is inexcellent hands with actingfacilitator Elishka Graham and ateam of helpers.

A 47-year-old man and45-year-old woman, bothfrom Levin, have beenarrested after a majorcannabis operation cameto a conclusion onTuesday.

The arrests follow aneight-month investigationinto an Auckland-baseddrug dealer.

Police fromHorowhenua, Manawatuand Wellington, includingmembers of thePalmerston North-basedArmed Offenders Squadraided a Levin propertyand discovered what theydescribe as a sophisticatedgrowing operation.

Forty-two plants invarious stages of growthwere seized, 36 werelocated inside and sixwere located growingoutside.

Police also found sevenfirearms — one, a loadedshotgun, was found in abedroom.

Constable Jim Dunlop,Operation Octopus co-ordinator, said under the

Criminal Proceeds(Recovery) Act 2009 therural property, a boat andtrailer, a four-wheel-drivevehicle, and a ride on lawnmower have been seized.

‘‘This operation sends astrong message to those inthe criminal fraternitythat crime does not pay.You can expect to becaught and whereappropriate assets seizedfor forfeitureproceedings,’’ Mr Dunlopsaid.

The 47-year-old man

and a 45-year-old womanhave been jointly chargedwith cultivating cannabis,possession of cannabis forsupply, and sellingcannabis.

Further chargesagainst the two are likely.They will both appear inthe Levin District Courtnext Thursday, February20.

Police believe thecannabis grown at theproperty was beingtransported to Aucklandfor sale there.

Blue Beat predictions ofhigh traffic volumes lastweekend certainly turnedout to be the case, withvery high numbers ofvehicles passing throughthe district, particularly onSunday afternoon.

The usual bottlenecks atOtaihanga and Otaki onceagain caused the greatesthold-ups, however therewere no major incidentsreported to police.

There are two events ofinterest happening overthe weekend that shouldappeal to a wide range ofinterests.

Firstly for rugby fansthe clash between theHurricanes and theCrusaders is happening onFriday night. Kickoff is at4pm. Extra Police staff willmonitor crowd behaviourand liquor licence outletsduring the game. Pleaseremember to parkresponsibly and lock yourcar.

The second event is theWaitarere Fire Brigades50th anniversarycelebrations at the beachon Saturday. Celebrations

will begin with a parade ofemergency servicevehicles at 10.30am,followed by a display ofvehicles and equipmentfrom each of the services,including fire, rural fire,police and ambulance. Foremergency service buffs,this should provide anideal opportunity toexperience first-hand allservices in one place.

I was disappointed tohear of yet anotherattempted burglary overthe weekend where theoccupants were at homeasleep.

Fortunately theoffender was disturbed bythe householder and theydid not gain entry andnothing was stolen. Asmall ladder was placedunder an open window toallow the offender to access

the window.Once again the open

window was theopportunity for theoffender to try to gainentry.

Some simpleprecautions taken byeveryone, locking doorsand windows to the houseas well as garages andsheds, will eliminate manyof the opportunitiesburglars are looking for.

There is good newsregarding thefts from carsover the week, and nooffences were reported lastweek. Good work byeveryone who has takenthe time to remove allproperty and then lock thevehicle.

It has been a few weekssince I have reported onscams, but rest assured thescammers have notrelented. I have evenreceived a scam on mypolice computer,purportedly from one of themajor banks. The emailwas urging me to refreshmy internet bankingaccount, however theproblem is I don’t dobusiness with that bankand I certainly don’tinternet bank with them.

Once again the Levin PerformingArts Society will host the popularJazz In The Park at the LevinAdventure Park.

Mr Craddock said after a highlysuccessful 2013 event, whichattracted over a 1000 people, thedecision was made to do it again.

He welcomed people to enjoy anafternoon of top Jazz bands thisSunday, starting at 12.30pm to 4pm.

The band will kick off the eventwith an hour-long set of big bandmusic and entertainment withpopular numbers.

To follow will be two top jazzbands from the Kapiti Coast. Playingat 1.30pm will be Classic Jazz withtheir smooth melodic jazz stylefeaturing vocals, sax and trumpet.

At 3pm Felicity and Friends willtake the stage and delight the crowdwith their unique style of popularjazz numbers featuring keyboard,flute and sax.

This jazz band is led by FelicityFox, the sister of well-known RogerFox. And Felicity also has the hugeFox family talent.

‘‘We are delighted to be hostingthis free Community event in suchan ideal setting as the LevinAdventure Park,’’ he said

Mr Craddock suggested peoplecome early, bring a blanket andpicnic basket and enjoy some topquality jazz played by some of thevery best musicians in theHorowhenua and Kapiti Coast.

The youth council, also known asYouth Voice, consists of 12representatives aged 13 to 19 years fromthroughout the district.

Te Takere’s youth radio station FusionFM 106.9 hit the airwaves last Wednesday,broadcasting 24/7 around a 5 kilometreradius from Te Takere, and live to theworld via the internet.

It is already attracting dedicatedlisteners.

‘‘We’ve had a great response from thecommunity,’’ Te Takere youth co-ordinator Ramon Oza said.‘‘Interestingly, adults are ringing in tosay they love the music we’re playing.’’

A couple of technical glitches resultedin momentary lapses on air.

‘‘We had people texting and phoningstraightaway to tell us,’’ Ramon said.

‘‘It’s great to know there are people outthere listening and taking notice.’’

Media students from WaiopehuCollege have approached the Youth Teamabout using the station to broadcastcollege events.

‘‘It is exactly why the radio station wasset up,’’Ramon said.

‘‘We want young people to start usingthe radio station and eventually run it.’’

Ministry of Youth Developmentprovided funding for the set up costswhich runs from three personalcomputers in the existing audio suite inthe Youth Space.

Location change on SaturdaysJohn Berry said from February 1 theTararua Pharmacy on Queen Street,Levin would be shut, their Saturdaymorning business would transfer totheir pharmacy in the HorowhenuaHealth Centre.

Mr Berry said it is simply a case ofcentralising the afterhours medical ser-vice for the convenience of patients.

Since Tararua Pharmacy opened inJanuary 1997 it has been open between10am and 12 noon on Saturday morn-ings. With afterhours medical service

centralising at the Horowhenua Com-munity Practice.

Mr Berry said even though theyadvertised the change was for Saturdaymornings only, they have already hadpeople wrongly assuming that they wereclosing the Tararua Pharmacy site.

With son Phillip now involved withthe business it means the Berry familyhave been providing Pharmaceuticalservice to the Horowhenua communitysince our arrival in Levin in 1965,almost 50 years.

Levin Swimming Club members were wellrepresented on the medal table at theManawatu Age Group Championshipsheld earlier this month in PalmerstonNorth.

The 21 members, competing against 14clubs from around the lower North Island,brought home a total of 62 medals, 17 gold,19 silver and 23 bronze, as well asachieving a total of 62 personal bests from125 swims.

Club committee member Jacqui Kerinssaid everyone shared in the team’ssuccess, and there were some ‘‘emotionalmoments’’.

‘‘The whole team was on the sidelinecheering and waving on Jake Mulhollandand Caitlin Huria as they successfullyachieved qualifying times for the NationalJunior Age Group Championships. It wasjust fantastic, especially as Jake also took23 seconds off his 400 freestyle time.’’

Other standout performances includedHannah Huria, who received the Rolle Cupfor the highest points across all 50m swimsfor 8 years and under and RebeccaMoynihan, who took 7 Golds and held on tothe Hodges Cup for junior girls as toppoints scorer.

Ms Kerins said there was even a ‘twinmoment’ when twins Maddison andChelsea Parlato, competing in separateheats, clocked up the same time, down to100th of a second, in the 100m butterfly for13-year-old girls.

‘‘The club is growing in strength andsupport,’’ Ms Kerins said. ‘‘Families aregetting involved and were there at theweekend cheering on all the swimmers aswell as helping out in official roles such astimekeeping.’’

Coach Albert Szilagyi, who has beenwith the club for less than a year, waspleased of the team’s results.

‘‘All the swimmers have worked hardin and outside training hours, and thathard work has paid off. I was proud of thegreat team atmosphere they created, it wasawesome to see them working together,laughing together and cheering for eachother.’’

Jake Mulholland and Caitlin Huria willbe part of the Manawatu Team competingat the Junior National Championships inWellington this weekend. Club memberswill be working towards qualifying forfurther national events later this year.

With the colour and flair of theWellington sevens rugby, teams fromaround New Zealand and also the BritishLions were given a spectacular welcome asthey made their first appearance for theENZED New Zealand super stocks teamschampionship.

Fans at Robertson Holden internationalspeedway were in for some surprisesamong a barrage of big hits and rollovers asthree of the top four contenders, includingthe 2013 champions the Palmerston NorthPanthers and top runners from last yearthe Manawatu Mustangs, were left to scrapin out for the minor placings.

After two nights of no-holds-barred

battles it was left to the Baypark Bustersand the Wanganui Warriors to slug it out tosee who was going to be named the best inthe country. The Warriors were up againstit as soon as the green flag dropped in thefinal when 15v Dion Mooney failed to get offthe line, but things started to look betterwhen 16v Kerry Podjursky blocked 13mDavid Elsworth out of the lead.

Kyle Heibner 14v had a shot at 11mKerry Remnant and was dealt to by 12mKyle Fraser. The big hit damaged both theBusters cars, but it was Heibner who wassent to the infield with a dangerouslyprotruding bumper — this was a loss theWarriors couldn’t afford.

Bevan Humphrey 18v gamely chargedon to notch up a superb drive that couldhave been the race-winner but Podjursky16v couldn’t tag the even quicker Elsworth,who charged across the line for a popularwin for the Pollock-orange Busters.

James Marshall,Alapati Leiua and FaifiliLevave held a pressconference at FairfieldSchool. Each classnominated one person toask a question to the threeplayers, who took turnsanswering. The staff thenasked some questionsbefore all classes had theirphoto taken with the threeplayers. Marshall, Leiuaand Levave then visitedLevin North School for alunchtime call-in andmanaged to have lunchwith the students and sign

a few autographs for theexcited pupils.

Andre Taylor, MotuMatu’u and Reggie Goodesstarted the day by visitingLevin East School andheld a press conference inthe hall. Some excellentquestions were asked andthe three Hurricanesplayers were impressedwith the standard ofquestions. Taylor, Matu’uand Goodes then stoppedby Levin School for alunchtime visit. The threeplayers sat in the luncharea and ate their lunchwith all of the studentsbefore embarking on tothe field where, despiteGoodes’ moonboot, he andTaylor still managed topass a rugby ball aroundwith some students whileMatu’u entertained thestudents who were sittingdown.

Record month for new car sales

New Zealand’s new vehicle market hascarried its momentum from 2013 into theNew Year with the industry achievingrecord January sales.

‘‘Total vehicle sales of 10,258 forJanuary, were by far the best Januarysales since the MIA [Motor IndustryAssociation] began collecting records,’’

said David Crawford, chief executiveofficer of the association.

New commercial vehicle registrationswere 2235, the highest January sales sincethe MIA began collecting records in 1981.

Sale of new passenger cars in Januarywere the highest since the MIA begancollecting records in 1975, with 8293 sales.

‘‘It’s the fourth month in a row thatrecords have been the highest sincerecords began, fuelled by a strong NewZealand dollar and a strong economy,’’said Mr Crawford.

There were 10,528 new vehicles sold inJanuary compared with 9293 in January2013. January registrations of newcommercial vehicles were up 17.1 per centand passenger car sales up 12.3 per centon January 2013.

Toyota was the January market leaderwith a 17.4 per cent market share (1830units) followed by with Ford with 11.3 percent market share (1193 units) and Holdenwith 9.8 per cent (1032 units).

The Toyota Corolla was again the topselling passenger model with 722 units,followed by Ford Focus (301 units) andSuzuki Swift (261 units). The VolkswagenGolf and Toyota Yaris were the next best-

selling passenger car models.The commercial market is expected to

feature a repeat of the sales duel betweenthe Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux whichraged throughout last year.

The Ranger began 2014 by recording 314January sales,ahead of theNissan Navarawith 291 unitswhile the Hiluxslipped to a rarethird positionselling 231 units.

Another fiercebattle shaping upin 2014 will be for

leadership among the German marques inthe European luxury car segment.Mercedes-Benz began the year stronglywith 200 January sales, just ahead of BMWwith 195 and Audi with 180 sales.

While sales showed significant growth,the segmentation of the market showedconsistency with sports utility vehiclesrepresenting 27 per cent of all sales inJanuary.

The top-selling SUV model was theMazda CX-5, with 214 sales ahead of theToyota RAV4 (182) and Nissan Qashqai(176). Small cars had a strong month,contributing 26 per cent of the market andpick-up/chassis-cab utes were 14 per centof all vehicles sold in January.

Method:

1. Combine the mince, onion, garlic, paprika, celery saltand cumin seeds and mix well.

2. Roll into medium sized meatballs and chill.

3. Pre-heat oven to 180°C.

4. Heat oil in a frying pan and brownmeatballs on all sidesthen transfer to a lined baking tray and toss with sweetchilli sauce.

5. Move to the oven and cook a further 6-10 minutes untilcooked through and sticky.

6. For tzatziki combine yoghurt, cucumber, mint andlemon zest in a bowl and season to taste.

7. Serve the sticky meat balls on the Farrah wraps withsalad greens, cucumber ribbons and sliced avocado andspoon over tzatziki dressing.

We are seeking to make an appointment as our Creative LivingCoordinator serving the Horowhenua area.This is an exciting position for someone who is creative, personable and who enjoys facilitatingprogrammes that focus on personal growth and enhancing the quality of life for people livingwith terminal illness.Applicants for the role must have;

• Some experience working within the Health Service, providing a service to others• Must have a warm and empathic personality with ability to interact successfully with
