Colin was delighted to be able to hand the gate over to Adopt an Anzac chairman Tom Hayes. All the finials across the centre appeared to be removed, two side frames were rusted away and there were no hinges or latches. Adopt an Anzac was keen to give it new life and reassociate it with Weraroa. With the assistance of Horowhenua District Council, concrete has been poured and rededication will appropriately take place on Armistice Day, November 11. Adopt an Anzac can take much credit for another heritage job in Horowhenua well done.

River reminderDelia Lanini’s evocative poem (as publishedin the Chronicle on October 8) was a poignantreminder that degradation of the FoxtonRiver affects the enjoyment and well-being ofall locals, and inhibits Foxton realising itspotential as a tourist and wildlife hub.

Many locals are working their butts off tohave the River Loop reopened to improve theflow, while other groups and individuals areproviding voluntary labour to beautify thearea, including scenic walkways, wetlandsand riverside plantings etc.

The internationally renowned Ramsarbird sanctuary at the Foxton Beach estuary isan established attraction. But it’s beingdegraded from the effects of river pollution.Foxton's only economic future depends ontourism and it's a pity the relevant authoritieshave proved more obstructive than helpful, though I hear better co-operation is in the

wind. Let's hope so.Meanwhile, can we have more of Delia

Lanini's delightful poetic comment?FIONNA BRADLEY

Jayden Moore, 15, admits schoolisn’t always his favourite place butthe Year 11 Manawatu Collegestudent is pretty enthusiastic whenit comes to Media Studies.Especially when the assignment wasto make a three-minuteinstructional video on anything atall.

“Students were encouraged tomake choices based on areas ofpersonal interest,” teacher AnnieKearney said. “They were assessedon pitch and plan for the video, andthe quality of the video itself.”

Choosing a topic was a no-brainer for reinsman, Jayden.Having just bought, and refurbisheda vintage buggy, Jayden who gives alot of time as a volunteer on theFoxton horsetram, had a word inretired tram horse Holly’s ear aboutmaking a cameo appearance. Withthe assistance of horsetrammanager and chief reinsman, JimWhite, it was all go. CameramanCorbyn Simpson caught the action, entitled how to tack up a clydesdalefor driving in a cart. After someconvincing, Ms Kearney, invited togo for a jaunt, admitted it wasn’t abucket list experience but jumpedinto the passenger’s seat for a quickequestrian excursion around theCollege sportsfield.

Organisers happywith fair responseBy FRANKIEWEBB

Christmas is only nine weeksaway, and Horowhenua ArtSociety’s Creative Christmasfair was a great reminder ofhow close it really is.

Fair co-ordinator PamBagnall was thrilled by theresponse of both stall holdersand stall visitors.

“We had 21 stalls, allundercover. People werewaiting at the doors for us toopen,” she said.

The free sausage sizzle puton by the MenzShed and thestalls were a winning

combination, coupled with thefact the weather was an indooractivity incentive.

Some of the wares ondisplay were the handiwork ofvery talented locals, othergorgeous stuff had come fromout of town. The society’s BathStreet studio and gallery wasbedecked in Christmasdecorations making it feel likeChristmas.

“It’s a bit early to tell howwell the fair has gone, butcertainly impressions todayare this could become anannual event,” Mrs Bagnallsaid.

New 4WD beach vehicle ‘marvellous’By TANYAWOOD

LVN291014TWBEACHWARDEN

Waitarere Beach volunteer wardens took possession of a dedicated 4WD vehicle lastweek, purchased from Horowhenua District Council. With the wardens is councilproperty officer Sam Wood (in black).

Waitarere Beach wardens have just becomea lot more visible.

The group took possession of a newvehicle last week and, according to MurrayHanlon, one of the 30-plus volunteerwardens, it was about time they had a four-wheel drive.

The group had made do with a borrowed2WD car for the past four years, or usedtheir own vehicles with magnetic beachwarden signs slapped on. “We’ve been inexistence for 10 years and it’s marvellous tofinally have a high-vis vehicle that clearlyidentifies who we are and has 4WD, as wetend to have to drive further and further upthe beach patrolling,” Mr Hanlon said.

The Suzuki Jimny is a former animalcontrol vehicle bought from HorowhenuaDistrict Council.

“They serviced it and cleaned it up realwell — no sign of dog hair anywhere.”Funding for the vehicle came from PubCharity ‘Sel’s Place’, with support from RossMcColl Cars, Parson’s Signs, AMI Insuranceand Harcourts.

The group works closely with police, helping to keep the beach user- and family-friendly during weekends and publicholidays. “We want people to enjoy thebeach. It’s also a designated road wherespeed limits apply. We can get up to 3000

people in a day during summer, so it’simportant we keep the beach safe foreveryone and make visitors feelcomfortable.”

He said the main problem is speedingdirt bikes and cars. When it is not possibleto speak to the drivers, the wardens takedown the registrations and dial 111. “Theroad rules apply here, all vehicles must bewarranted and registered, and no donuts(sustained loss of traction). The penaltiesare harsh, with the vehicle confiscated for

six weeks, a fine and loss of licence.”Anyone getting stuck in the sand can be

sure of a friendly tow from the wardens.Beach visitors are also reminded to take

all their rubbish when they leave, keep dogsunder control and respect the year-roundfire ban.

Mr Hanlon said anyone can join thevolunteer group. “It’s very much acommunity thing.”■ ContactMurrayHanlon, phone (06)368-6694.

“The weather wasn’t thatkind to us but that didn’t deterpeople,” an ecstatic Paul said.“We are 2000 visitors up on lastyear, which was held in brilliantsunshine.”

Strolling into the southernend of Main Street you could beforgiven for thinking you hadstumbled upon an internationalfood fair. The selection andsmells were divine, most stallstrading right up until closing ...or their food ran out. There wasvisual stuff going on this year, more for the kids to do and less ofthe bric-a-brac to buy. Thequality of goods on offer were ingeneral pretty high. Foxton’samazing tram horses, were asalways, a huge drawcard. Thewonderful volunteers who keepthis unique attraction going, deserve special recognition.

THE cast of the Vagina Monologues performed by the Levin Performing Arts Society, back left, Tacita Bohan, Mikayla Madden, Rebecca Fraser, Jennie Ferguson. Frontleft, Janine Moody, Lynne Long, Sonia Papworth, Tracey Bentall and CarolineWallace.

Vagina Monologuesmore than a playLevin Performing Arts Society (LPAS)present The Vagina Monologues.

Director Jacqui Coogan has puttogether a highly talented cast of ninewomen to present this ground-breakingplay.

Jacqui said this is an amazing play, filled with humour, empathy andhonesty. “You won‘t be disappointed.”

The show is on for six performancesonly, over two weekends.

Eve Ensler wrote the first draft ofThe Vagina Monologues in 1996 (therehave been several revisions since),following interviews she conductedwith 200 women about their views onsex, relationships and violence againstwomen.

The interviews began as casualconversations with her friends, whothen brought up anecdotes theythemselves had been told by otherfriends. The monologues are based onindividual stories or a combination ofsimilar stories.

A recurring theme throughout theshow is the vagina as a tool of femaleempowerment, and the ultimateembodiment of individuality.

The Vagina Monologues is muchmore than a play, it is a connectionbetween women and a celebration ofbeing female.

This is not to say that it is notentertaining for men, especially menwho might like to understand women alittle better.

“The society is proud to be producingthis wonderful ground-breaking play,”said LPAS president Chris Craddock.

“Highly controversial at the time ofits release, mainly due to the title, it hasbeen suggested that Horowhenua is notready for such a production. Thesociety is taking a financial risk topresent such a play but is confident thatwomen in the provinces will supportour show.”

In 1998, Ensler and others launchedV-Day, a global non-profit movementthat has raised more than $75 millionfor women’s anti-violence groupsthrough royalties from performances ofThe Vagina Monologues. Royalties fromperformances still go to assisting thesegroups and Mr Craddock said royaltiespaid by the Society will directly benefitsuch women‘s groups.

Mr Craddock said theatre goers inHorowhenua should not have to travel toWellington or Auckland to experiencesuch thought-provoking drama.

“We have a history of producing stageentertainment of the highest calibre,” hesaid.

LPAS recently presented theAustralasian premiere of Bonnie andClyde and has produced several worldpremiere plays by local playwrights ValFranklin and Peter Franklin.

The Vagina Monologues opens Friday,October 31 at 8pm with performancesSaturday and Sunday November 1 and 2,Thursday, Friday and Saturday,November 6-8.

A three-course meal is available foreach 8pm evening performance. Peoplecan book tickets at the LPAS BookingOffice at Meredith‘s, 178 Oxford Street,Levin, or phone for reservations on 06 3687520. Door sales will also be available foreach performance.

Trampers rescued

LVN291014splrescue

Four trampers werewinched to safety bythe crew of thePalmerston North-based RescueHelicopter during theLabour Weekend.

On Friday a 60-year-old Levin woman, whosuffered serious handinjuries in a lawnmower accident, wasflown by thePalmerston NorthBased RescueHelicopter to HuttHospital for specialisttreatment.

Bad weather in theranges at the weekendcaught trampers out, asconstant rain quicklyraised river levelsisolating four trampers, two each in the TararuaRanges and RuahineRanges. The helicoptercrew were contacted bythe RescueCoordination Center onMonday after beaconswere activated by thetrampers, cut off byswollen rivers.

Weather conditionsin the Tararuas madethe first search difficultbut the two tramperswere located near theMangahao Flats Hut.

Due to the ruggedterrain, the helicopter was unableto land and the trampers had to tobe winched into the helicopterbefore being taken to PalmerstonNorth.

Immediately after the mission, the helicopter was again requestedto get back in the air for the nextsearch. This time they flew to the

Ruahine Ranges to pick up theother two trampers cut off byrising river levels, who werelocated near the Iron Gate Hutand also had to be winched tosafety.

The pair were flown toPalmerston North Hospital, cold, but good condition.

Quiet weekendfor fire serviceBy PETER FRANKLIN

Levin volunteer firefighterswere kept busy over LabourWeekend.

Crews assisted St Johnambulance staff with a patientand also investigated a report ofsmoke coming from a house, where firefighters found someboys playing with a small fire inthe backyard.

They were also called to theLevin Adventure Park after achild got stuck on a slide and hadto be helped down.

Firefighters were called to theNorth Service Lane after a firewas reported. It was put out andpolice are investigating.Unofficial sources say that ayoung person has been spoken toby police in relation to theincident.

Chief Fire Officer LindsayWalker says thankfully thebrigade were not called out toany car crashes. While trafficwas heavy on Monday withpeople returning home from thelong weekend, it would appearthat the large police presence onthe highways and driversheeding the safety messagesbefore the weekend had thedesired results.

Mr Walker says the heavybuildup of north-bound traffic atthe Otaki round-a-bout assistedkeeping speeds down.

“While we did not have anycrashes here (Horowhenua),there were three fatalitieselsewhere which is extremelysad. As a volunteer brigade, thelast thing we want to have toattend is a crash involving a localperson,” Mr Walker said.

CANNABIS WARNINGThe cannabis growing seasonhas begun and police are askingpeople to take note of anyunusual comings and goings, particularly in rural districtsthat can be linked to druggrowing operations.

Warning signs can include:• Vehicles parked down the endof country roads for no obviousreason.• People walking into the bushwith gardening implements, pots or fertiliser.• Unexplained torch lights in thebush at night.• Clearings in the middle of

bush plots.• Camouflage nets.• Small tracks that seem to gointo the bush for no reason. It is helpful to get details ofsuspicious vehicles, includinglicence plate details, colour, make and model. If people comeacross a cannabis plot, theyshould stay clear of theoperation, note specific detailsabout the location and report thematter to Police.■ Information can be given to localPolice or anonymously on theCrimestoppers phone 0800 555111.

There is a saying that ‘Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer’. So what is it aboutembarking on a journey to Europe and the United Kingdom in this case, that keeps us coming backfor more?

Well, apart from the fact that United Travel are offering “Sterling Earlybird” prices on return airfares tomost UK and European destinations until the end of November and the exchange rate is still good, ifyou travel in Europe and the UK with guided holiday specialist Trafalgar, you will experience incrediblemoments at the many iconic sights and beyond that you just didn’t expect.

Trafalgar’s motto is “See the World from the Inside” and for 70 years that is what they have been helpingtravellers to do. Taking out the “Best Touring” awards at the Globe Travel Awards for 2014 and having a96% Customer Satisfaction rating is no small feat in this large market, and this is but one of the manyawards that Trafalgar net year after year.

From personal experience, holiday season in UK and Europe can be hectic with tourists from all overthe world flooding in and in particular visiting the major sightseeing attractions that are on offer. Butwith Trafalgar, you go straight to the front of queues, and believe me, that’s a huge bonus. At theVatican alone, it is not unusual to wait for hours in the hot Italian sun for admission as the queues arelong (very long) and there is absolutely no shelter. Not only that, you get VIP treatment with Trafalgar byenjoying exclusive access to selected sights – like seeing the amazing 15th Century Bramante doublehelix stairway at the Vatican which the casual tourist cannot view. You benefit from luggage porterageright to your room, and you stay in carefully selected hotels that are at least 4 or 5 star quality, and havethe most experienced Tour Directors and drivers available.

Because you are chauffeur driven in air-conditioned luxury coaches, you will not only avoid thefrustrations of driving or parking and paying for parking in a foreign country or being crammed intopublic transport, but you will be taken to meet artisans and quirky local characters that you wouldlikely not have come across when travelling under your own steam. For example meeting a friend ofTrafalgar’s in Florence, renowned Chef Libero who will invite you to walk with him to his local market ashe chooses the best ingredients for your shared lunch, flamboyantly demanding that the vendors offerhim only the very freshest tomatoes, in a manner that only an Italian can.

You get to experience local life by dining as the guests of a family at a Tuscan farmhouse, at a FrenchChateau or you might stay at a Castle or stately home in Britain, transporting you to the times ofDownton Abbey or Pride and Prejudice.

There is always an element of free time on Trafalgar Tours but they also cater for people who may wantto choose an optional activity – like front row seats at a Moulin Rouge Show, which is a never-to beforgotten experience! And if you prefer the smaller group tours, Trafalgar has their “Hidden Journey”options for the more intimate tours of 26 or less guests who get to see and experience “up close andpersonal” what others can only view from a distance. Trafalgar also cater for single travelers on manyof their tours - those that don’t mind “sharing with a stranger” which is an excellent and affordable wayto travel if you are on your own.

It was hard to choose, but we have outlined just a couple of the magical itineraries that Trafalgar offer.

BACK ON THE TOOLS: Dave Hobbs hardat work.

Lack of staff floors ownerA lack of suitably skilled staff available inHorowhenua is forcing one businessowner to don tools and take to the factoryfloor himself just to keep up withworkload.

Trayla Trailers owner Dave Hobbscurrently employs two welders but needsanother two, as well as two people toassemble trailers. Currently he does theassembly himself.

“It’s not like I’m looking for topqualified, highly-skilled staff with finetechnical abilities,” he said.

“Yes, welding is a skilled job, but forassemblers all I need is a few people whoknow how to use a hammer, crescent andspanner to help assemble trailers, as wellas sort stock, sweep the floor and maybedrive a small truck. But can I find them? No,” he said.

“Employable people with suitable skillsjust don’t seem to be around. And, it’s notjust now — filling vacant roles has been astruggle for the past few years.”

Mr Hobbs says his frustration is sharedby other business owners in Horowhenua.

“To grow our businesses we need morestaff, but if we can’t find staff, we’restymied.”

Mr Hobbs and fellow business ownersare looking forward to hearing more aboutthe Horowhenua Workforce DevelopmentStrategy to be presented at a meeting forlocal business leaders tomorrow eveningin Levin.

The strategy will address the lack ofsuitably skilled staff available locally — amajor constraint to continued businessgrowth in the district and one of the issuesidentified in the Horowhenua EconomicDevelopment Strategy 2014-2017.

Horowhenua Economic DevelopmentBoard chairperson and Lewis Farmsmanaging director Cameron Lewis saysthe plan is to develop an integrated andpartnership-driven approach to matchlocal labour needs with local training, education, and support services —currently and in the future.

Mr Lewis says it is important that thebusiness community comes together to

help provide a real stocktake of industryrequirements.

“It is only then we will be able todetermine the current situation andongoing issues. We can then work towardsidentifying opportunities, desiredoutcomes and the pathways to achievethese.”

Mr Hobbs says he hopes the strategycan clearly identify the needs and thesolutions, though he still needs to findmore staff by early next year when heplans to have completed the developmentof a new custom-designed factory in theTararua Road industrial area.

“Over the past few years, particularlythrough the economic recession, we’vedoubled our turnover, resulting in toomuch work for just myself and two staff.”

In-home Support

Baker’s DozenA dozen keen bakers from Enliven’sLevin Home for War Veterans andReevedon Home have started a clubto satisfy sweet-toothed residents andstaff, and fill the halls with the smell offreshly baked goods. The Baking Club, which was started bythe home’s residents, is held fortnightlyon a Thursday afternoon and hasbeen running for three months.Recreation Officer Felicity Jefferiessays the baking club ties in well withthe Eden Alternative - an elder-directed model of care used atEnliven rest homes that follows tenprinciples to prevent loneliness, helplessness and boredom.“The Eden Alternative changes theway people think about supportingolder people. Instead of focusing onwhat people can’t do, we supportthem to continue doing the thingsthey’ve always done. Many of themcan no longer bake by themselves, but with our support they can.”

The baking club uses equipmentdonated by generous membersof the Levin community and a fewvolunteers come along to help theresidents.“We use the residents’ own recipesfor the club and usually they bakethings they enjoyed when they wereyounger,” says Felicity.“It’s great to see them all creatingsomething as a team and having fun.”Felicity says while the baking clubconsists mostly of women, when thesmell of fresh baking wafts aroundthe home the male residents swarmto the baking room like moths to aflame.“The gentlemen tend to hangaround during the baking club, wecall them the tasters, but if you passthem the bowl and the spoon they’llhappily give it a mix around.”For more information aboutReevedon Home, Levin Home for WarVeterans, or the Eden Alternative, visit www.enlivencentral.org.nz

Hi de Hi Dash and Splash EventStudies show that older adultswho do physical activity arehealthier and less likely todevelop serious long-termconditions than those who

don’t. Provided people go aboutit sensibly, exercising has veryfew risks, and certainly fewerthan not doing any physicalactivity. Starting an exercise

programme is also a great wayto improve quality of life andmake new friends.

Benefits from regularphysical activity include:

• Decreased risk of heartdisease• Decreased risk of developingcolon cancer• Reduced risk of developing

high blood pressure• Help in reducing bloodpressure in people whoalready have high bloodpressure• Decreased risk ofdeveloping diabetes• Lower risk of developinghypertension• Increased musclestrength, flexibility andsense of balance, all ofwhich reduce the risk offalls• Help in controllingweight.Swimming is oftenrecommended by doctorsand therapists as an idealworkout because it’s lowimpact and presents aminimal risk of injury.Walking is also a highlyrecommended low impactexercise for older adults asyou can go at your ownpace and it can be done forfree. So taking this intoaccount, we want to run anevent for the 60+ age groupcalled the Hi de Hi Dashand Splash event. The event consists of awalk, followed byswimming or aquajogging, depending onwhat participants choose. It will be the first time anevent like this — an entrylevel event with the focuson having fun and givingit a go — has beenorganised.

Event information:· 10am Wednesday November19· Distance — Short, mediumand long distances available· Fun — It’s all about havingfun. The aim of taking part is tofinish, not to finish first. Theevent will not be timed.· Safe — First aid will be onsite, and it is recommendedparticipants consult theirdoctor first, if this is their firsttime doing physical activity in awhile.· Prizes — Lots of spot prizes onthe day.· Social — There will beentertainment, music, and theevent will start with a morningtea.· Cost — $5 to enter this coversthe training day.

To help get you ready for theevent, two free trainingsessions will be held. Sessionone will focus on aqua training— you will learn all you need toknow about swimming or aquajogging.

Another high notein Alison’s career

LVN211014fwlines

Alison Lines has been recognised by the Diocese ofWellington for her service and commitment to theAnglican Parish of Levin receiving the Bishop’s Medalof Service. PHOTO: FRANKIE WEBB

By FRANKIEWEBB

Levin musician AlisonLines has received manyaccolades for her musicalskills and generosity of hertime and expertise.

This year she has beenrecognised by the Bishop ofWellington for hercontribution to theAnglican Parish of Levin. The citation states it isgiven to commemorate theservice and commitmentAlison has given to theAnglican Parish of Levin. Alife member of the LevinMusic Society, Alison learntto play the piano when shewas 11 years old. Shestudied music in 7th Format Horowhenua College, theonly student to do so, shehad to do her papers bycorrespondence.

On her 17th birthday sheachieved her solo seal.

Music wasn’t on offer atVictoria University either,so Alison studiedbacteriology, getting a job atPalmerston North Hospital. During WWIIconcerts were rare, Alison continued tostudy music and participated in musicsociety events held in a local church hall.

Church has played a large part inAlison's life and it was where over 60years ago she spied a handsome youngreturned serviceman, Keith Lines, whowas to become her husband.

The couple opened Levin's first pickyour own orchard and were the first NewZealand growers to export strawberriesaround the world.

The Lines have four children, all haveinherited a love of music.

Honorary life membership to theLevin Music Society in 2006 wasdescribed by a very humble Alison as anunexpected thrill. In 1974 Alison wrote afolk mass after attending church inWanganui. It ran for 15 years, once amonth, with up to 200 people attending.Alison and Keith have been activelyinvolved in ministries, Alison has beenactive in a healing ministry for over 50years.

Honorary Fishery Officers Ian Seager, left, and Roger Kusabs, right, are one of fourvolunteers who patrol the beaches from Paraparaumu to Wanganui at weekendskeeping an eye on recreational fishers.

FISHERY OFFICERS NOT TOO BUSY YETBy TANYAWOOD

Labour Weekend proved a quiet affair forthe district’s Honorary Fishery Officerskeeping an eye on the local fishing spots.

Roger Kusabs was out on patrol withpartner Ian Seager and said the traditional‘cast off’ to the fishing season was quieterthan normal. “It wasn’t the best weather forfishing but wait till summer and it’ll getreally crazy.”

He is one of four volunteers from Levin,Foxton and Feilding attached to theWellington base who patrol the coastal areafrom Paraparaumu to Wanganui yearround, on behalf of the Ministry of PrimaryIndustries.

With such a large area to man, the grouprelies on Beach Wardens, police and thepublic keeping their eyes peeled forpoaching and illegal netting.

“We deal with a lot of illegal net fishingbecause of the number of estuaries.”

He said the hot spots were Foxton,Himitangi and Tangimoana.

“We also need to keep an eye on peopletaking shellfish, especially toheroas onwhich there is a total ban,” he said, exceptfor Maori with customary permits issuedfrom reputable member of the local iwi.

Over summer the district sees an influxof visitors not familiar with the recreational

fishing and shellfish limits, and Roger saidtheir role was also to educate people.

“Many people are unaware there areregulations, especially people from foreigncountries where they don’t have these typesof rules. Once they understand it’s to helpconserve future numbers, they agree withwhat we’re doing.”

First offenders generally get off with aninfringement notice and official warning, however for habitual offenders, thepenalties can be severe. First fines start at$250 and can go into the thousands, equipment such as cars, boats and divinggear can also be seized. Roger’s message issimple – be familiar with the regulations.“It’s up to the individual to know theregulations, ignorance is no excuse.”

Roger said they rarely had any serioustrouble in the district.

“We police on a regular basis, peopleknow we are around and when we get thecalls we can be there quick, smart and nip itin the bud.”

He said part of the key to their successwas the good rapport with the public.“They’re watching out for their own areasanyway. People living at the beachgenerally keep an eye out on their own backyard and give us a call.”■ Recreational fishing regulations can be foundatwww.fish.govt.nz/en.nz/recreational

Humphries picks up coveted trophyBy VAL and PETER FRANKLIN

LVN291014SKspeedway1

A win in the last heat secured the Robin Pratt Memorial Stockcar Trophy for William Humphries 94p.

LVN291014SKspeedway2

With so much at stake, it was full throttle from the drop of the greenflag.

Mayhem galore at stockcars as 35drivers lined up, all with theireye on winning the covetedRobin Pratt Memorial StockcarTrophy on Saturday.

But it was WilliamHumphries from PalmerstonNorth who added the covetedtrophy to his growing collectionat the end of the night. RobertsonHolden International Speedwayhad a near-capacity field ofstockcars lined up for theopening heat, with brothers 55rLes and 555r Daniel Holland fromRotorua the sole visitors.

Heat one, the track was a littlegreasy with the drivers not onlyhaving to handle the conditionsbut also the onslaught of carspushing their way through forpositions on the podium. DavidLowe, 772p, made the best of apole position start and won thefirst heat. A crowd-pleasingbattle developed for second placebetween 34p Rob Mason, 11pPeter Rees and 94p WilliamHumphries.

Rees got up to second placebut was overtaken by Mason andHumphries in the closing laps tofinish in fourth.

Humphries’ third place hadhim first equal with Rees on 66points, but a much better grid forthe final heat left him in the boxseat. One point behind wasTaniwha, with an unfavourablegrid in the decider, followed byLowe, 4p Josh Parkes and 127pEthan Rees fourth equal on 60points.

Action started again in heatthree, with Rees running outwide on turn two and attacked by17p Shane Simpson, resulting inthe defending champ rolledbefore a lap had been completed.Taniwha successfully blockedout of the running by 557p DarrelWallace, with Humphrieskeeping out of trouble to win thefinal heat and a great titlevictory. Parkes and Ethan Reespowered home in second andthird place, which is where theyalso finished overall – anexcellent result for two drivers.

Superstocks numbers wereboosted by the return of 3nzp

Graeme Barr who made asuccessful season debut in an18-strong Superstock field. Barrgot a second place and a race win,but the model of consistency was10p Peter Rees with a win and apair of second places. Asher Rees126p won the feature, although471p Benji Sneddon provided theentertainment for the fans with atextbook walling on 57p DaveTarrant in the first race, and aspirited battle between 8p Scottand 88p Jack Miers that was abonus to watch.

Minisprints fronted up with18 competitors, including fourvisitors from Stratford, two fromWellington, and one each fromRotorua and Auckland.

However, it was 2nzp JamieLarsen who stole the show, winning all three races inspectacular fashion.

As normal, Larsen put on aclass show. The opening win wasthe best, with a brave outsidepass on a couple of cars that hadhim go from fourth to first in thespace of one lap.

Jordan McLeod 97p, had animpressive night, with twosecond places and a third,Aucklander 38a Donald Kurigerfinishing ahead of McLeod in thesecond race.

Another class act of the nightwere Sidecar champions 1nzpPaul Humphrey and BenFranklin winning two races inanother top quality Sidecar field, but just like opening night theycould not make headway against3nzp Kieran Payne and StuElston in the feature.

Andrew Buchanan and hisAustralian swinger Denny Coxon 39p, won the first race of thenight, with father and son duo58p Simon and AustinWindelborn the other racewinner.

HIGH STRENGTH: The new Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan, which goes on sale in New Zealand from early 2015.

Genesis sedan achieves top safety ratingThe new Hyundai Genesis luxury

sedan, which goes on sale in NewZealand from early 2015 has

received the highest safety score in thehistory of Australasian New CarAssessment Programme (ANCAP)testing.

The Genesis achieved the highestscore in the 21-year history of ANCAPtesting — 36.88 points out of a possible 37and a maximum 5 star ANCAP safetyrating.

A 5 star safety rating is ANCAP’sultimate measure of vehicle safetyprotection for occupants andpedestrians. The assessment includes a64km/h frontal offset test and a 50km/hside impact test, along with a 29km/hpole test, a whiplash test simulating a32km/h rear-end crash, and a 40km/hpedestrian impact protection test. Aminimum number of active safety assisttechnologies (SATs) are also required.

The Genesis’ tally of 36.88 pointsincludes a frontal offset score of 15.88out of 16 and a side impact protectionscore of 16 out of 16. Genesis also scored2 out of 2 in the pole test and a whiplashprotection test rating of “good”.

Structural integrity and strength hasbeen a key priority of Hyundai MotorCompany’s engineering teams sincedevelopment of the new ‘DH’ modelGenesis sedan began six years ago.

The vehicle uses advanced high-strength steel throughout its bodystructure, and has been designed fromthe outset to pass the world’s mostdemanding crash tests.

When the Genesis is launched in NewZealand at the start of 2015 its roster forstandard safety features will includeAutonomous Emergency Braking, BlindSpot Detection, Adaptive CruiseControl, Electronic Brake Distribution,Electronic Stability Control, DaytimeRunning Lights, HID headlights withstatic bending and high beam assist,Emergency Stop Signal, Lane Support

System, Pre-safe Systems, ReversingCollision Avoidance, 360-degree AroundView Monitor, tyre pressure monitoringsystem and active lift (pop-up) bonnet.

The Genesis has nine passengerairbags including a driver’s kneeairbag.

‘‘Genesis is Hyundai’s flagship modeland as such offers a high level ofphysical crashworthiness and excellentsafety features as standard,” saidANCAP chairman Lauchlan McIntosh.

‘‘This is one of the first times we haveseen the word ‘standard’ listed againstalmost every safety feature on ourchecklist. Importantly, autonomousemergency braking is one of thesestandard features – one that has recentlybeen left off many new models.’’

Andy Sinclair, Hyundai Motors NewZealand general manager, said therecord test score illustrates Hyundai’scontinued commitment to safety andinnovation.

‘‘Hyundai New Zealand was the firstmanufacturer to include ElectronicStability Control (ESC) as standard in2007. In July of this year we madereversing cameras standard across ourentire range,’’ he said.

The Hyundai Genesis is a large rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan. In the NewZealand market it is expected to beavailable with a direct injection 3.8-litreV6 petrol engine and eight-speedautomatic transmission.

Speldhurst new croquet home

LEVIN Croquet Club members play on temporary lawns at the Speldhurst Country Estate, formerKimberley Centre, while their new club house and four new lawns are being made ready in another part ofthe estate.

GUY House in SpeldhurstCountry Estate will betransformed into plushnew club rooms for theLevin Croquet Club, aswell as function rooms;the old bowling lawn iscurrently undergoingredevelopment for fournew croquet lawns.

By TANYAWOOD

Levin Croquet Club has found anew home at the formerKimberley Centre, and savedmoney.

The first hoops were set uplast week on temporary lawns inthe grounds of the old centre, now under private developmentas the Speldhurst CountryEstate.

Growing popularity of thesport forced the district’s onlycroquet club to find biggerpremises to accommodate itsincreasing membership.Established in 1915, the clubmoved to Weraroa Road 93 yearsago. One of the few croquet clubsin the country to own its ownlawns, the land and clubroom wassold in July.

Levin Croquet Club presidentLois Molloy said the decision tosell was made about 18 monthsago, as membership doubled tomore than 40 in that period.

“It may not sound a lot buthaving just two lawns restrictedhow many people could play atone time,” she explained.

She said the club wasconsidering relocating toWestern Park but the idea ofmoving to the new developmentwas mooted by a club member.

“It’s all happened so fast, it’s alovelier setting and will only costabout a third of our originalestimate ($350,000).”

Mrs Molloy said they will stillneed to organise grants and areholding fundraising events tomeet the full cost.

“ Members are thrilled andexcited about being here. It’sfantastic, we just want to havesomewhere where we can hit a

ball and keep playing.”The club has been given

temporary accommodation in anexisting building and hasconverted a paddock into twocroquet lawns, which Mrs Molloyrefers to as “crosscountry” lawns.

“There were sheep grazingthere. It’s not pitch perfect, I hadto get our lawnmower man tomow it 37 times to get it into thecondition it is now but it’s goodenough to practice on.”

Club championships andtournament hosting will be heldat the Palmerston North RoseGardens until their new lawnsare ready.

The club’s new rooms will bein historic Guy House, currentlyundergoing renovation. An oldbowling green out front isalready being levelled andenlarged to allow for four newcroquet lawns.

Club members will provide‘manpower’ to help withpainting, planting and any otherwork needed, as well as seedingthe new lawns and organisingunderground irrigation, allplanned to be completed for thestart in October of the 2015season, the club’s centenaryyear.

According to Levinbusinessman Wayne Bishop, owner and developer of theSpeldhurst Country Estate, having the Levin Croquet Clubin the new development is acoup for both him and the club.He said the benefits go farbeyond just the developmentand its future residents.

“It’s always been acommunity facility and it willcontinue to be for thecommunity at large.”
