    All About Horses

    Horses are animals called Mammals. Mammals have hair orfur on their bodies, and mothers make milk inside theirbodies for their babies to drink. When a baby horse is justborn, it is called a Foal. The baby foal nurses on its mothersmilk soon after being born.

    Two animals that belong to the same family as horses aredonkeys and zebras. Donkeys are smaller than horses andthey have bigger ears. Zebras have black and white stripes on

    their bodies.

    Horses have strong bodies. They have four long legs and theyhave hoofs on their feet. Hoofs are hard coverings that protecta horses feet. The horses legs are also very strong . The twofront legs carry most of the horses body weight when it ismoving. The hind legs help the horse to move forward. Theway in which the horse moves its legs and places its hooves onthe ground is known as the horses gait. These gaits go fromslow to fast. Walking being the slowest to Galloping being thefastest.

    Horses drink a lot of water. Horses are herbivores becausethey do not eat any kind of meat. Wild and domesticatedhorses graze on grasses. Domesticated horses are also fed oats

    and other grains for nourishment. Horses also enjoy treatssuch as apple slices, carrots and sugar cubes.

    Facts about Horses:

    Horses can sleep both lying down and standing up.

    Horses can run shortly after birth.

    Domestic horses have a lifespan of around 25 years.

    A 19th century horse named Old Billy is said to have lived 62

    years.

    Horses have around 205 bones in their skeleton.

    Horses have been domesticated for over 5000 years.

    Horses are herbivores.

    Horses have bigger eyes than any other mammal that lives on

    land.

    Because horses eyes are on the side of their head they are capa-

    ble of seeing nearly 360 degrees at one time.

    Horses gallop at around 27 mph.

    The fastest recorded sprinting speed of a horse was 55 mph.

    Estimates suggest that there are 60 million horses in the world.

    Scientists believe that horses have evolved over the past 50 mil-

    lion years from much smaller creatures.

    A male horse is called a stallion. A young male horse is called a

    colt.

    A female horse is called a mare. A young female horse is called a

    filly.
