Speaking of flies, they are the nasty little critters that carry pigeon fever on their little feet and create summer sores. I cannot express enough how im- portant fly control is. There are several companies that will remove your manure on a regular basis for a very small fee. Well worth it. Fly predators are also helpful. Our horse shows are fast approaching and we need all hands on deck. The dates this year are October 11 th and 12 th . It’s a lot of fun to volunteer to work one or both of the shows and we need all the help we can get. We also need sponsors so when you’re at your local feedstore or see your vet- erinarian, hair dresser, farrier, friends and family, please ask them to spon- sor a class. The sponsorship form is in the back of this newsletter. We want to thank the Placer County 4H group that had their work day out at the Arena a couple of weeks ago. They removed all the staples from our office building and repainted it. It looks great! They also groomed the arena and pulled the excess sand away from the edges. Thank you 4H and the parents that helped for a job well done. Howdy Pardners!

Hellooooooo Summer! You’ve hit us hard and fast. Horse shows, trail rides, horse camping, mov-ing cows…AND flies! TRAYLOR RANCH NATURE RESERVE Workday number three down for the year on Sat-urday May 26. This was the Saturday of Memo-rial Weekend and therefore it was a light turnout. Clelia Jocoy and Dave Faoro on tractor mowing, Mary WestFall and Jennifer

Wright diligently came out to haul a wheelbar-

row around filling gopher holes and trimming those crazy blackberry limbs which I could swear reach out and grab you as you go by. And thanks to Sue Stack for berry pruning. I expect some additional volunteers who could not make it this weekend to come out over the next week. We still have some areas to mow and weedwack, so don't be surprised if you go out this next week and find some trails needing some work. The trails all seem to be in good shape, so get out and enjoy. Our next work day as usual is the fourth Satur-day of the month, which is Saturday June 28 from 8-12am. This will be the time of the year when the berry vines grow like crazy and so we could use addi-tional workers to prune them. If you have hedge clippers they work great. Of course we'll also need a crew of weedwack-ers. Please mark your calendar now. If anyone has any questions on TRNR, please don't hesitate to drop me a note.

Bayview Horse Trailhead near Emerald Bay, southwest shore of Lake Tahoe

Highway 89, Eldorado National Forest by Robert H. Sydnor June 2014

Bayview Trailhead is an entry portal into the Desolation Wilderness Area within Eldorado National Forest. Access is from Highway 89 in the vicinity of Emerald Bay, about 8 miles north of South Lake Tahoe. Drive through the campground to reach the trailhead.

The Bayview Trailhead (shown by the red square) is at an elevation of 7,100 feet. Mount Tallac, elevation 9,735 feet is nearby. The Bayview Trail connects into the Velma Lakes Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail within Rockbound Basin inside the Desolation Wilderness Area. A USFS Wilderness Permit is required to enter Desolation Wilderness (shown by the orange line on the map). There is no cost to use the trailhead, but overnight horse camping is not permit-ted. Bayview Trailhead contains several horse corrals, a horse trailer parking area, and a horse loading ramp. The small creek that supplies the horse water-faucet usually runs dry by early summer, so bring your own horse water.

Page 6: Horsemen’s Associationlbha/WebNewsletterJune2014Sm.pdf · 2014-06-01 · Hellooooooo Summer! You’ve hit us hard and fast. Horse shows, trail rides, horse camping, mov-ing cows…AND

Bayview is both a campground and a trailhead. Equestrians cannot camp with horses at the corral. It is just for unloading horses that are headed into Desolation Wilderness Area. For further information go to the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit at this website: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/ltbmu/

The Bayview Trailhead serves two different trails: A scenic hiking trail leads south to Cascade Falls, one mile distant. This trail is heavily

used by hundreds of tourists each weekend, so typically there is congestion of vehicles at the trailhead. Horses cannot traverse the waterfall trail with granite steps and narrow ledges.

The horse trail into the Desolation Wilderness is well-marked. It traverses southwest and ascends steeply to Upper Velma Lake, then into Rockbound Basin. Refer to map.

Q and A Obsessive Licking

Q: I have a very athletic 10-year-old, 17-hand Warmblood gelding who is very well-behaved. He

doesn't bite, doesn't kick, and is the most passive horse in the field. He is ridden five or six times a week for training (jumpers). That said, he likes/needs to lick everything or have food in his mouth all of the time. He goes through his salt lick every few weeks; he has a Nibblenet slow feeder for hay, but he consumes it faster than other horses do even without the net. He drinks tons of water and pees a lot, too. While I'm within reach (grooming, tacking, washing, etc) he is licking any and every part of me--clothes, skin, hair ... nothing is off limits. I have a hard time keeping his weight down, as his heart rate is very slow and he is always munch-ing in the field/stall and the grazing muzzle really irritates his skin (even with sheepskin covering the edges). Bottom line, what causes this quirk? If he were a person, I'd say there was a lot of anxiety and inse-curity. If that is a possibility, what can be done? Leslie Page, via e-ma

A: One big question is how long has your horse been doing this? Especially if the licking behavior

is not new, and because he drinks so much and eats more salt than most horses, I would recom-mend first having an internal medicine specialist and possibly a nutrition specialist evaluate this horse. Even though your horse does not exhibit all the classic signs of gastric ulcers, I would also want to rule those out. Gastric ulcers may or may not be the root cause of the horse's anxiety, but they can lead to licking and mouth activity in an attempt to produce saliva, the body’s natural ant-acid. If you and your veterinarian find nothing medical to explain the licking, I would then return to exploring behavioral causes. Sue McDonnell, PHD, Certified AAB
