Hosei University Ichigaya Campus is conveniently located in the heart

of Tokyo in Chiyoda Ward, accessible within 15 minutes by train from

2 major stations—Shinjuku and/or Shibuya. Within walking distance is

Kagurazaka, a tourist spot famed as a historic area since the Edo

Period. The Campus is at once a representative of the modern

metropolis Tokyo is as well as a place where one can come in contact

with tradition.

Hosei University has a long history and tradition;

originally founded in 1880 as the Tokyo School of

Law, it is one of the oldest private universities.

At present the University, one of Japan’s most

comprehensive institutions of higher learning,

comprises 15 faculties, 14 graduate schools, 1

39,000 students and 1200 academics on its 3

campuses--Ichigaya, Tama and Koganei.

International students in this program enroll in

courses at the Ichigaya Campus situated in the

The Exchange Students from Overseas Program (ESOP) was

established with the aim of accepting students from overseas,.

Courses in the Program cater primarily to exchange students or

privately funded short term international students. Government

sponsored international students are also accepted into this

program and study alongside exchange students.

The Program comprises 1) Japanese Language classes—from Level

1 (Beginners) to Level 6 (Advanced) and 2) classes on Japanese

Culture, History, Economics and Management conducted in English.

Japanese Language courses meet almost daily--3-5 times a week

(each session lasting 90 minutes)—with the aim of helping students

possible.

Courses conducted in English such as Japanese

Culture, History, Economics and Management

meet in small classes and enrolment is not

limited only to international students but is also

open to regular Hosei University students with

competent English Language ability. Those

individuals studying alongside classmates from

other countries greatly enhance interaction

among students.

It is also possible, in addition, to enroll in

courses in the Faculty of Global Interdisciplinary

Studies as most of the courses are conducted in

English.

A Japanese Language placement test is given at

the beginning of each semester. Those who

have attained Level 2 (N2) of the Japanese

Language Proficiency Test may enroll in regular

classes conducted in Japanese for Japanese

students, for more in-depth studies.

In addition, students may participate in the class

“Discover Japan” which comprise field work and

presentations on what has been assimilated;

here, Japanese students and international

students work alongside each other, doing field

work and presentations on their activities.

Other events include taking part as spectators in

the Tokyo Big-6 University Baseball Games,

Cooking Lesson, a Kagurazaka Walking Tour, as

well as other Japanese cultural activities. Many

of English proficiency.

1) Mandatory subjects

All of the subjects listed at the student’s level of

Japanese proficiency (Levels 1-6); each

semester will have 3 to 5 courses per level. In

addition, enrollment in subjects in 1) 2) and 3)

support to students on an academic level as well as in

their student life, in both English and Japanese.

Completion certificates will be issued to those students

enrolled in over 18 courses per year. At the same time,

transcripts will also be issued so that credits can be

transferred toward graduation at the home institution.

Accommodations are available in Edogawa Ward approximately

25 minutes by the Tozai Subway Line from Iidabashi, the

station nearest to the University. International students in

this Program are offered breakfast and dinner daily from

Monday through Saturday—except on Sundays and holidays--

at a cost of ¥31,250 per month (as of November 2014). Each

single room is equipped with air conditioning, bed, pillow and

light stand. Bath and toilets are communal. Use of laundry

facilities, iron and/or vacuum cleaner is free of charge.

2014 is the first year for Hosei University to accept MEXT

program students, but of the exchange students from

overseas accepted in the past (from over 17+ years ago),

some of the graduates have gone on to graduate school., and

some become diplomats of their own countries.

After returning home, Hosei University provides the necessary

support, such as counseling and issuing of certificates, for

students in continuing their education at the home institution.
