It is the knowledge and use of the fundamental tools and principles present in traditional operational excellence and quality processes where the value can be added. But this requires recognizing that they can have a much wider application beyond the traditional transactional manufacturing environments in which they were born as with the Plan-Do-Check Act cycle of continuous improvement which is still at the heart of the Hoshin process. In some cases this recognition may require a step-change in approach. For example moving from thinking of quality purely in a compliance sense, to using the fundamental rigors present in the quality management systems and controls, to identify process improvement opportunities and ensure relentless and systematic follow up takes place.
