A word from your Chair …..

“You matter because of who you are. You matter to the last

moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully,

but also to live until you die”. — Dame Cicely Saunders

What is Hospice? I am asked this question from time to time when working for Hospice at fundraising

activities or by casual acquaintances inquiring about what I do in my retirement.

These are some of the things I tell them:

Hospice is a philosophy of care

Hospice philosophy accepts death as the final stage of life.

Hospice care treats the person and it focuses on quality rather than length of life.

Hospice care is family-centred care.

Care is provided for the patient and family 24/7.

Hospice can provide a special kind of care that focuses on the

quality of life and helps keep clients as comfortable as possible.

I also tell them if you are grieving, living with an illness or caring for someone,

Hospice North Hastings can help. Our volunteers hold hands, listen to cherished

memories, pat a shoulder, give a hug and touch a heart.

Thank you all for the work you do, the service you provide and the care you give.

“The art of living well and the art of dying well are one”. Epicurus

I cannot tell you how many times that all of us at Hospice have people say…”it must be so hard to work at the

Hospice House” or “how can you work or volunteer there” or “it must be a very sad place to be.” It may

surprise many of you that this is not the case.

I personally love my position/role at Hospice North Hastings and look forward to each and every day there. I

also know that when a new volunteer starts at the Hospice House, they are amazed by the comradeship, the

connection with families and the joy that occurs when a family spends their last days together...telling

stories...reliving the ”good old days” and just being together as a family should. We feel that being able to share

this time with a family is a privilege and the volunteers look forward to coming into the Hospice House for each

of their shifts.

Don’t get me wrong...we do feel a sadness for what is to come but when you are making a difference, when you are

helping a family get the very most out of a moment...there is a joy...there is a happiness. We are making life a

little bit better during this difficult time.

...and don’t think for a moment that the impact on our own lives is not there...we do realize the fragility of

life...we see it every day and I think that all of us that are at Hospice seem to laugh a little louder, hug a little

tighter and perhaps cherish life just a little bit more than individuals who aren’t exposed to this side of “life”.

We truly wish you all...health and happiness in 2010 and if we can be of any assistance please don’t hesitate to

contact us.

With hugs!!!!

Heather’s Highlights ….

Name: Carole Boyle

How long have you been a

Volunteer? I have been volunteering with

Hospice North Hastings since the Spring

of 2008.

Why did you select the Hospice

to volunteer? Years ago I had wanted to

be a nurse and this seemed to be the next

best thing.

I read an ad in the paper that they needed

volunteers and I decided that was perfect

for me. I was looking for something more

fulfilling.

What has being a volunteer meant to

you? I just love the Hospice House, the people

you meet, the wonderful care the house

provides for our patients, the no stress to

families.

Any special moments in your time as a

volunteer that you would like to share? There are all special memories the

families “thank you” is enough for me.

They enjoy the house as their own. The

suppers cooked in the kitchen, the tears

and the laughter are all good. It is what

living is about.

A word from the Coordinator: Carole has been an amazing

Volunteer...she is a natural with

patients and families. We appreciate her

always being available for cases at the

Hospice House and cases in the home.

During some weeks she has volunteered

over 20 hours - WOW!!

Thank you Carole - you are a gift!!!

BEREAVEMENT/GRIEF SUPPORT

Long Distance II

The members of the Spring 2009 Hospice Bereavement

Support Group...

would like to invite all persons who have attended

other Hospice grief groups to join them for dinner!

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 6pm at the Sword Motor Inn

Please RSVP to Hospice House,

613-332-8014 Individual menu items run

$10-$20.

Though my mother was already two years dead Dad kept her slippers warming by the gas, put hot water bottles her side of the bed and still went to renew her transport pass. You couldn’t just drop in. You had to phone. He’d put you off an hour to give him time to clear away her things and look alone as though his still raw love were such a crime.

He couldn’t risk my blight of disbelief though sure that very soon he’d hear her key scrape in the rusted lock and end his grief. He knew she’d just popped out to get the tea. I believe life ends with death, and that is all. You haven’t both gone shopping; just the same, in my new black leather phone book there’s your name and the disconnected number I still call.
