A word from your Chair …..

Hospice North Hastings has come along way in the 15 years since its’ humble beginnings in the basement of the old hospital and we have evolved so much. This is largely due to the vision of a few key people, the courage of a few more and the strength and dedication of all involved. Hospice means many things to different people. To our over 900 clients who are assisted by Hospice North Hastings annually, the focus is on their comfort and self respect by caring for their physical and emotional needs. To the families of the patients, it provides care and aid in keeping their loved ones in their homes longer. To the volunteers, it is a way for them to give back to their community and perhaps “pay it forward”. From our many selfless volunteers who continue to give so much of them-selves, to our phenomenal Program Coordinator Heather, the wonderful board of directors, and the entire community who continues to support this worthy cause, to say thank you seems so trivial and yet it also says it all. Thank you. Kelly

VOLUNTEER PROFILE: Betty CoutuVOLUNTEER PROFILE: Betty CoutuVOLUNTEER PROFILE: Betty Coutu

How long have you been a

Volunteer?

I became a director on the Hospice

North Hastings board in the spring of

2003.

Why did you select the Hospice

to volunteer? I chose Hospice because

I am a retired RN and I could see a

need in our community to provide end

of life care for families of dying loved

ones. At that time we did not have a

hospice house but we were providing

volunteer visits in people’s homes to

enable caregivers support.

What has being a volunteer meant to

you?

I am proud to remain as a director on

the board of Hospice North Hastings

and to see how far we have come in

providing end of life care for our

loved ones in the community.

The financial and emotional support

we have received from businesses and

families has taught me how great the

town of Bancroft and the surrounding

area is.

Any special moments in your time as a

volunteer that you would like to share?

I continue to volunteer in our many

fundraising events and donate time to

provide end of life care in the Hospice

House. The appreciation shown by

families and the dying person them-

selves, gives me satisfaction and

knowledge that I am helping them

through this most difficult time of life.

A word from the Coordinator:

Betty has always responded to our call for

assistance and we greatly value her insight

and experience in the health care field as

well as her happy positive manner!

Thank you Betty– for all that you do!!

Heather’s Highlights ….

“happiness is having a large, loving , caring, close-knit family in another city” George Burns

This quote made me laugh…. and laughter is so good for us!!

Many believe that as the time draws near for someone to die that we should behave in a somber manner

and spend our time whispering quietly. I disagree. I believe that we should gather together to tell

everyone the stories of that persons life. What made him/her who they are!!

In my family as in others….we know which of us broke Mom’s favourite lamp and who flinched all of

the short bread cookies and butter tarts out of the freezer (not me!!). We need to remember all of the

crazy, wonderful times that we have had as a family and share them with the next generation. I recall

sitting at the bedside of a patient at the Hospice House and listening as the family reminisced. One story

had me in tears of laughter and was set sixty years ago….involving a young newly married couple that

needed help with one of those tight old girdles.

I believe that our patient...lying in bed unconscious actually smiled!!!

The stories are so important... Please encourage the sharing of them!!!

Don’t forget….laughter and tears….go hand in hand on this journey. Heather

Hospice North Hastings again says thank you and farewell to Connie Fowler. Connie was the Office Manager

at Hospice for the past seven years and Hospices wishes her all health and happiness in her future endeavours.

...and here is

Julia ..another co-op

student….showing off one of our Memorial

Dove Trees that are

around the town during the holiday

season.

What would we

do without the

wonderful co-op students that we

get through the

North Hastings High School??

Thanks to Ruthannah for a

great term!!

Beautiful fall scenery around the River’s Edge Golf Course during our Hike for Hospice. Thank you to River’s

Edge for allowing all of us to enjoy the wonderful

grounds.

Pictured on the left ….the Team that raised the most mon-

ey…..Martin’s Marvels!!

Thank you!!!

Hope to see you all on

September 29, 2013

for the next

Hike for Hospice!!!

Another

great group

of

volunteers trained and

ready to go

in our community!!!

If you are

interested in joining us

just give us a

call for a time of the

next class.

Congradulations to Melissa Dureault for winning the grand prize of a night

accomadations at Bancroft Inn & Suites, for

raising the most money as an individual walk-er! Thank you!!!

Resonance

Death is always sudden.

However long one vigils

when it comes

the quiet report it sounds

in your head

reverberates for years

with pain

and loss

and longing

~ Eleanor Koldofsky

Helping Children Grieve We all know that death is a part of the mystery of life, but we nev-er know exactly when or how it will enter and touch our lives. Children today may reach adulthood without ever experiencing the death of someone close to them. Unless adequately prepared, they will have difficulty coping with a death when it occurs. As parents, teachers, and health professionals, it is our responsibility to prepare children for the inevitable losses in life by introducing the concept of death at an early age. Children are naturally inquisitive about death, just as they are about life. It makes sense, then, that we seek to educate them regarding it. Children are eager to learn. If we convey the message that it is not okay to talk about death, they will simply find another source of infor-mation. Rather than attempting to hide death from children, we should discuss it openly, honestly, and naturally. Children obviously do not understand death the same way adults do. The concept develops gradually over time as children learn, grow, and experience life. When teaching them about the cycle of life, we must tailor the information to their individual needs. GOOD NEWS!!!!!!

HOSPICE CARE IN THE FUTURE

Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO) sets the Standards for Hospice Care in Ontario.

The Hospice House for North Hastings met all but two of the Ontario Residential Hospice Standards .

1.We did not have a private bathroom for each client and did not think it was necessary with most of

our clients not able to get out of bed and;

2.We did not have a Registered Nurse on site 24/7, we have a Registered Nurse available 24/7to

come in if needed .

After 6 years of operation of the Hospice House for North Hastings and after many

meetings with other rural supporters of this model, the Standards Committee has decided that no longer

will they insist on private bathrooms for each client and that HPCO will create a new standard for small

residential hospices based extensively on the existing standard but with the requirement for a RN on site

24/7 replaced with wording for an alternate model of care….such as ours.

Only took six years….again North Hastings...ahead of the game!!!!

The following statements are from Rick Firth CEO of Hospice Palliative Care Ontario.

(October 2012)

“They called it "The Elephant in the Room." Teams representing Hospice Palliative Care Ontario descended on Queen's Park this week to talk to MPPs about dying and death. Something that most people, even in the health care field, have trouble talking about. But the fact is, we are all going to die, leaving only the where, when and how uncertain. A small number of us - 2.9 per cent - will die a sudden death. The rest of us will meet our end through ill-ness, advanced age, or a combination. The older we get, the more likely we are to get a life limiting illness. And with the age of our population, there will be a whole lot of us heading to the exit, at about the same time. We need to be ready to provide the kind of care we all will want. More than ever there is a need for coordi-nated, quality, hospice palliative care to be available throughout the province, and in all care settings: the home, long term care, the hospital, and of course through residential hospices. It really is about the right care, at the right time, in the right place. Too often people who are dying and the family members trying to care for them, run into problems with pain and symptom management, which leads them to the emergency department. There are models in Ontario that show that a coordinated support system can help people stay home longer, in comfort, prepared, with less burden on the families and the health care system. It's an effective and desirable way to help people live well, right to the very end-of-life. The sector has matured in recent years with the support of the provincial government. There has been un-precedented funding, and more recently the government is working with a broad based health care coalition to provide direction on how to ensure hospice palliative care is delivered appropriately throughout the prov-ince. On behalf of everyone at HPCO, I would like to thank the MPPs, staff, volunteers and sponsors who made this momentous day happen! Best regards, Rick Firth Executive Director Hospice Palliative Care Ontario”

Only 2.9% will die a sudden death….we need to be prepared to care for the rest!!!!!!!!!
