INTRODUCTION

Using and consuming things will lead to waste.

Failure to control and dispose of waste safely can cause sickness.

It is also an open invitation for pests to come creeping in.

Identifying the different types of waste and how best to dispose them is part of waste control.

Special equipment , machines and containers are used to manage waste disposal.

We can reduce waste through planning and recycling.

Good waste management will go a long way towards helping our planet survive

TYPES OF WASTE DISPOSAL

RUBBISH BINS

•Used to collect dry waste , food waste , refuse , street ash, residue ashes ( cold )•Must be strong , waterproof , wind resistant , fire resistant , lined with plastic bag.

SANITARY BINS

•Plastic containers used in toilets to collect soiled sanitary dressings.•Most companies uses external hygiene companies to handle sanitary waste.

REFUSE CHUTES

•Used in high rise buildings. Refuse from each floor is wrapped in newspaper , put in rubbish bags and dropped into chutes.

• On ground floor there is a container that collects the bag.

ELECTRIC GRABAGE DISPOSERS

• Machine with a motor and blades that is fitted into the drainpipes of sinks of a kitchen.

• Waste is shredded and washed down the drain.

INCINERATOR

• Large machine like a furnace , reaches a high temperature burning rubbish.

• Used in hospitals for soiled sanitary dressings , bandages etc.

COMPACTOR MACHINE

• Machine used to compress ( crush , flatten) metals , paper and plastics.

• Reduces the volume of waste by 75%.

METHODS OF WASTE TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL

TYPES OF WASTE METHOD OF DISPOSAL

1. SOILED NAPPIES/ SANITARY DRESSINGS

Wear gloves/ plastic over hands. Seal in plastic bags / scented bags to prevent bad

odours. Sealing bags prevents cross contamination and any

liquid spilling. External collection company puts sealed bags into

rubbish bins for collection .

2. GLASS Glass can be disposed in 2 ways : Heavy duty container marked ‘ For Recycling Only “ Wrap broken glass in thick newspaper before putting

into plastic bag to avoid being cut or injured. For collection by external company.

3. NEEDLES/RAZORS Always wear gloves and tongs to pick up as these are health hazards containing human blood/fluids carrying germs and diseases.

Wrap in newspaper first , then seal in heavy dutyplastic bags, place in rubbish bin for external company to collect.

4.CIGARETTES/MATCHES/ASHES

Ensures completely dead before putting in rubbish bin to avoid a fire hazard.

Ash must be cooled down completey eg: from a braai before disposing. Never in a plastic or rubber bin which can melt.

Use a steel bin with tight fitting lid which is used only for this type of waste ready to be collected by the external collection company.

5. FOOD WASTE Must be disposed of separately due to containing bacteria which causes food poisoning.

Can put into electric garbage disposer. Moist edible garbage can be collected separately

in a plastic bag by a pig farmer for compost or sealed in a plastic bag , put into colour coded bin for collection by external company.

6. PAPER To be put into colour coded paper bin. Can be tied into bundles and collected by a

recycling company. Keep away from hot ash to prevent fire hazards.

7. PRESSURISEDCONTAINERS

Aerosol containers must be kept away from heat/flames due to gas in them expanding when heated causing an explosion.

These bins must be in a cool place away from the sun.

Cannot be incinerated for the above reasons. Never prick or pierce. Can explode. Wear protective clothing when handling these.

8. CHEMICALS Wear PPE. Follow instructions . Some can be put down the drain or place in clearly marked containers in colour coded bins to be collected by external company.

GARBAGE STORAGE AREAS

Keep clean at all times. Clean spills immediately to prevent attraction of pests

Keep lids closed tightly and have sufficient bins to prevent overflowing.

All bins must be in good condition and if possible in an enclosed area to avoid attracting pests, animals and human intruders.

Keep passages and areas with fire extinguishers free from rubbish.

Boxes , cartons and paper items stacked in passages looks untidy and canbe a fire hazard.

REASONS FOR STORAGE AREAS BEING CLEAN

Do not attract flies , pests and rodents

Safety for staff and guests will improve

Neat , clean appearance leads to customer satisfaction

Risks of fire will be reduced

No bad smells will occur

Saves energy and raw material.

Fewer natural resources are used ie : fewer trees are cut

Collection companies pays for waste collected which provides an income

Creates new industries and new jobs

Reduces pollution
