“He leads by example and pushes everyone he comes in contact with to be

the best version of themselves and to give unselfishly to their community and

their team.”

“Of all of the 'official' job titles he has had over the years, the one that brings

him the most joy and seems to give him the most energy is that of 'mentor.'"

"There is a misconception that a mentor

is someone who tells you how to live

your life by giving you advice. A true

mentor… is someone who listens to what

you're saying, shares with you his own

dreams and ambitions, and challenges

your decisions to make sure that you're

not staying stagnant with your choices."

2017 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNERAllison Melangton

I will be forever grateful to the many women and men who

invested their time in me over my lifetime, and I believe strongly

in paying that forward and investing my time in our future

generations and leaders. - Allison Melangton

Allison Melangton, Senior Vice President of Events at Hulman Motorsports Corporation, is a corporate and philanthropic leader. She has given her time and talents to mentor youth and business leaders alike so that their futures and the future of our community can be brighter.

Originally a Maine native, Allison came to Indianapolis after graduating from Colorado State University. It was her love of gymnastics that originally brought her to Indianapolis; it’s her love for the city that kept her here.

Melangton’s contributions to the community since arriving in 1983 are numerous. Before joining Hulman Motorsports, Allison served on the Executive Leadership team of Indiana

Sports Corporation for twenty years, serving the last two years as President, from September 2012 until October 2014. Four of those years were serving as CEO and President of the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee, from 2008 through 2012. Super Bowl XLVI was widely regarded as the most engaging and successful ly organized Super Bowl in history. In addition, Allison has worked as an Executive Producer for NBC Sports for five Olympic Games.

But perhaps her greatest contribution to the community has been through her vast mentoring efforts. Throughout her career, Melangton has engaged in both formal and informal mentoring in the workplace and through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Through this program, she and her husband Tom were matched with little brother Mitchell for 10 years and have remained a part of his life even after the formal match concluded.

Melangton indicates she has benefited from mentors in her life,

too, “I will be forever grateful to the many women and men who invested their time in me over my lifetime, and I believe strongly in paying that forward and investing my time in our future generations and leaders.”

In addition to being recognized as the Lifetime Achievement Award in Mentoring recipient this year, Allison has received numerous other distinguished honors. She received a Sagamore of the Wabash from Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels in 2012, and was recognized as a “Living Legend” by the Indiana Historical Society in 2014. Sports Business Journal, the nation’s industry-leading publication, named Melangton as a recipient of its “Game Changer” Award in 2012. Melangton also serves on the Board of Directors for OneAmerica Financia l Partners, Inc.

Allison lives in Carmel, Indiana with her husband of nearly 30 years, Tom. They have one son, Cameron, a recent Ball State University graduate.

HIGHER EDUCATION AT THE HIGHEST PROVEN VALUE

We believe that students deserve a quality education they can afford. So we’re increasing scholarship offerings, managing costs and doing everything we can to increase the long-term value and payback of a Purdue degree. Because when we say that big ideas are at the core of higher education — we mean it.

“When I think of mentorship, the image that resonates with me is

that of a lighthouse: something to guide you, something to warn

you of danger, but something that ultimately lets the captain of

the ship steer it in the path most fit. [My mentor] certainly serves

as that guiding light for me, and my life, as well as the lives of

many other people, would be much darker without her.”
