International Organisation for Standardisation - ISO

ISO is the world‘s largest developer of standards

A few figures:• 162 member national standards bodies such as

ANSI, BSI, DIN, AENOR, etc.• 3,238 technical bodies (Technical Committees,

Working groups, etc)• 18,083 International Standards published• 3,769 work items in progress

ISO Standard Process

Country representatives in ISO technical bodies are appointed by rules set the discretion of each ISO member country. ISO liaison organisations such as GS1 can participate actively in the work but don’t have any voting right

Proposal for a new standard or for modifying an existing standard is addressed by a country or a liaison body

Documents progress from working draft to the ultimate status of formal standard. Each step includes a formal ballot by the country members of the technical body

Why do we liaise with ISO?

• ISO reference is important to GS1 adoption by governmental organisations in some regions and by sectors such as Health care, Defence, Airlines, Industrial goods, Automotive, etc.

• Interoperability between GS1 and non-GS1 standards

• Develop synergies with communities beyond GS1’s traditional user base

Forms of collaboration with ISO

• Specification from GS1 submitted to CEN – ISO for standardisation. Examples:• EAN/UPC bar code symbology ISO/IEC 15420

• UHF Gen 2 protocol (RFID) ISO/IEC 18000-6 type C

• GS1 solution embedded into a standard offering several options. Example:• GS1 Unique ID of logistics units, products, assets, etc. recognised in

the multi-part ISO/IEC 15459 (Unique Identifiers)

• GS1 adopts existing CEN – ISO standards in its own specifications. Example:• Data Matrix bar code symbology, ISO/IEC 16022

GS1 GO and MO’s involvement

• GS1 GO invests some 250 working days in ISO standard development processes annually

• MO’s involvement in ISO work and in national “mirror committees” is essential• Contribute to establish national positions on ISO ballots

• Promote GS1’s views

• Develop synergies and contacts with other communities

What about the future?

Global Commerce and Technology proliferation

imply that

The need for global standards addressing Identification, Automatic Data Capture, Communication, Data

synchronisation, Visibility, Traceability, etc.

will increase dramatically in the future

GS1’s leadership role will be maintained and enhanced through our involvement with other standard bodies
