Paul Dillon - Teens, Alcohol and DrugsPaul Dillon - Teens, Alcohol and DrugsPaul Dillon - Teens, Alcohol and DrugsMany parents, like their children, access information on drugs from inappropriate sources such as the media and as a result there is a great deal of mythology around drugs and their use. This presentation, based on his new book 'Teenagers, Alcohol and Drugs', will attempt to give accurate, up-to-date information on what we know about young people, alcohol and drugs in Australia. It aims to empower parents with some basic information about current trends in alcohol and other drugs by examining the questions young people really want and need answers to. This will assist parents to have meaningful conversations with their child when responding to queries that may be raised.

Paul Dillon has been working in the area of drug education for the past 25 years. For the past 16 years he has worked at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, Sydney where his key role was to disseminate research findings to policy makers, drug and alcohol workers and the general public.

Through his own business, Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) he has been contracted by many agencies and organisations across the country to give regular updates on current drug trends within the community. He has also worked with many school communities to ensure that they have access to good quality information and best practice drug education.

Angie Wilcock - Transition Strategies for High School and BeyondAngie Wilcock - Transition Strategies for High School and BeyondAngie Wilcock - Transition Strategies for High School and BeyondTransition to high school is more than an 'event', more than a simple 'orientation' - it is a significant period of physical, emotional, social and cognitive development for our children. As their child's first and best teacher, parents should and need to be involved in this critical phase. The B.O.A.T Transition to High School program focuses on developing strategies to support the partnership between home and school and between parent and child.

Four key issues are addressed in this session: balance between work and play; organisational skills - the need for a 'system'; attitude - setting goals and understanding learning styles to support a positive attitude; time management skills - how to stay on top of the increased workload and study.

With more than 20 years in teaching, Angie has focussed her attention for the past four years on the needs of parents and students in transition from primary to high school. She presented her work at the APC/ACSSO National Education Conference in 2009 and has subsequently worked with staff, parents and students across Australia.

She has had numerous articles on transition, learning styles and time management strategies published in national and state educational journals and on educational websites, and is an online advisor on parenting issues in education on the U.S website AllExperts. Her topic is the impact of transition to high school on our young people.

Jo Marlin and Glennis Baumann - Building Partnerships: The Vital Role of Parents in Literacy LearningJo Marlin and Glennis Baumann - Building Partnerships: The Vital Role of Parents in Literacy LearningJo Marlin and Glennis Baumann - Building Partnerships: The Vital Role of Parents in Literacy LearningResearch studies show there is a strong connection between parents being actively involved in their child’s reading, and the level of the child’s reading attainment.

The workshop explains and demonstrates the vital role parents play in the child’s literacy learning and calls on the current research, the ‘on-the-ground’ experience of the presenters, advice from professionals and some of Australia’s leading authors in this area.

Parents are a child’s first and natural teachers. The workshop helps parents recognise that what they do at home helps literacy learning at school. It also helps parents value the learning which takes place at home and how they help that learning. The earlier this is done the more it benefits the child.

Parents will gain new ideas on how they can help their children’s learning at home and school, especially in the early schooling years.

Jo Marlin and Glennis Baumann are members of the Diocese of Broken Bay Parent Council Parent Education Team and facilitate workshops for parents across the central coast of NSW.

Jo completed Early Childhood studies, then took on a position in Special needs /Learning support 7 years ago.
