LCCC Professor Recognized with Highest Honor in NY

LCCC adjunct instructor Bruce Frassinelli, center, receives an honorary membership citation from Oswego (N.Y.) Rotary Club President,

Dr. Rick Tesoriero, right. Also shown is Paul Heins, who sponsored Frassinelli’s membership into Rotary in 1992.

The Oswego (N.Y.) Rotary Club honored LCCC Adjunct ProfessorBruce Frassinelli with an honorary membership, citing him for his many contributions to the club, to Rotary International and to the community during his 16-year stay in Central New York. The recognition, which included a citation and pin, was presented at a club meeting in June by club president, Dr. Richard Tesoriero, who indicated it is one of the highest honors the club bestows. Frassinelli served as president of the club in 1997 and was a longtime member of the board of directors. He also served as governor of Rotary District 7150 in 2001-02, one of just four Oswego Rotarians to serve in this capacity in the club’s 88-year history. He also coordinated the district’s participation in the annual Make A Difference Day, which won national recognition on three occasions in USA Weekend. A resident of Schnecksville, Frassinelli has taught political science courses at LCCC for the last seven years.

Special Guests Visit College

Fourteen students from Allen and Dieruff high schools participated in LCCC’s Summer Bridge program for developmental students. The program was designed to prepare students for what will be expected of them in college. The students took part in a reading class with Assistant Professor Beth Marquardt, as well as another class called Seven Habits of Highly Effective College Students, as instructed by Returning Adult and Veteran Specialist Gloria Lowell. The students noted that after participating in the Bridge program they felt much more prepared about what to expect and much less anxious about starting college in the fall.

Students and alumni now have a new online resource to help them search for available jobs through the Career Development Center’s new job bank and web-based recruiting system, Connecting LCCC And the Workplace (CLAW). The Claw replaced CCN. The new system features a streamlined approach to navigating potential jobs, the ability to upload multiple documents, research any of the participating employers on the site, and the system allows employers to specifically attract and recruit LCCC students and alumni. To date, 44 new employers have been added to the CLAW. There are 268 active jobs posted. Users may register for a new account at: https://lccc-csm.symplicity.com/students/ “We are extremely excited to introduce the CLAW to our students and faculty,” noted Director of Career Development Services Christina Moyer.

Two LCCC students received an award recognition for their research at the American Psychological Association (APA) Convention in Toronto, Canada. Caitlin Carbone was awarded second place in the Gold Level of the Worth/Psi Beta Research Paper competition. Caitlin’s paper, Sex Role Identity Among Female College Students: A Cross Cultural Analysis, was conducted in collaboration with researchers from Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan. She was invited to present her research through a poster presentation at the conference. Julie Hochhauser was awarded second place in the Silver Level of the Worth/Psi Beta Research Paper competition for her paper, Does Culture Influence Unethical Business Decisions? Julie’s research was conducted with students in the business programs at LCCC. Both Caitlin and Julie were recognized and received a cash award at the APA International Convention. Both students were mentored by Dr. Robin Musselman. Dr. Musselman is working with a researcher from Islamabad, Pakistan. This collaboration was established through a partnership program with the International Conference on Psychology Education. For additional information, contact Dr. Musselman at [email protected] or visit http://psibeta.org/site/awards/research-paper-award.

LCCC Psychology Students Win Awards

The Early Learning Center (ELC) hosted several guests this summer as part of the STEM Summer Camp experience for children. During the Creative Art Week, Martin Lemelman visited the ELC and inspired the children through storytelling and the art of illustration. Martin has illustrated more than 30 children’s books and published two memoirs. He is a retired professor from the Communication Design Department at Kutztown University. Other guests visited the center to teach the children how to build and construct cities using blocks and drawing materials. Visit www.lccc.edu/elc to learn more.

LCCC’s myLCCC portal, which is accessed daily by students, faculty and staff, underwent some upgrades to improve usability. The upgrades included styling changes and resolving a bug fix. Other adjustments included a mobile-responsive theme applied to myLCCC, so users can now access all portal content through their smart phones or tablet computers. The Favorites section allows the user to drag and drop their most frequently used items from other places within QuickLaunch. As the IT department creates more communities in myLCCC, they will appear in the Communities section of the QuickLaunch menu. The Profile page has been redesigned, but it is still a work in progress. Any changes made on this page will only be visible within myLCCC, not in BannerWeb. The Announcements layout has changed, but it functions the same as before. Users may also notice some changes when using the myLCCC mobile app, such as the login page and the Forgot Password pages. This content is now fully mobile-responsive as well. The bug fix is related to the latest version of Firefox. Some users were seeing an error when trying to access the login page. This was due to a security change in Firefox, but this issue has now been resolved in myLCCC. Please feel free to email your thoughts about the upgrade and myLCCC in general under the feedback link within the help category in the QuickLaunch menu. And coming soon will be an update to the myLCCC Mobile App and a new events calendar.

myLCCC Gets an Upgrade

LCCC Jim Thorpe offers five new associate degree programs providing students with the opportunity to take their career to a new level. These programs: Computer Science (A.S.), Construction Management (A.A.S.), Construction Technology (A.A.S.), Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (A.A.S.), and Industrial Automation (A.A.S.) offer in-demand technical skills training that can lead to employment in a high-priority occupation. Three out of the five new programs allow students to earn a specialized technology certificate, which prepares students for entry-level employment in the industry. Graduates of the Carbon Career and Technical Institute can take advantage of the existing articulation agreements with LCCC which may provide advanced standing in a technical associate degree program. LCCC also provides scholarship opportunities specifically for students entering the technology programs.
