10 Rosenthal, Alexander & Yamin cover photos by Fran Kaufman

ALBUMS BY TWO PIANISTS WHOhave a sure grasp of jazz traditions and

who incorporate their influences seamless-ly into their playing are featured in thisWinning Spins. Both offerings havethemes: Ted Rosenthal's trio takes a jazzview of winter holiday music, while EliYamin is joined by clarinetist EvanChristopher in a duo celebrating theirmusical heroes.

Wonderland, Ted Rosenthal Trio(Playscape), is a Christmas album thateven folks who loathe holiday music shouldlove. Hearing the joyous opening track,"Winter Wonderland," it is easy to forgetthat it's a seasonal song, as the trackswings along so effervescently. "SilentNight" is more reflective and Rosenthalinserts references to Thad Jones' "A ChildIs Born" to add to its jazz flavor. Propelledby Tim Horner's drumming and NarikoUeda's bass, "Angels We Have Heard onHigh" is driving bebop on which Rosenthal, who has recorded an album of Bud Powelltunes, draws deeply on his Powell roots.

"The Christmas Song," a lovely, lyricalballad, is enhanced by Horner's sensitivebrush work. He switches to toms on "Danceof the Reed Flutes," from Tchaikovsky'sNutcracker, as Rosenthal turns it into arollicking calypso. "Greensleeves" swingswith gentle insistence in 3/4, while "SantaClaus Is Coming to Town" becomes a romp-ing blues, backbeat and all.

"Have Yourself a Merry LittleChristmas" begins with a rubato pianoverse before slow brushes and empatheticbass support the pianist's sustainedromantic treatment, lyrically developedwith gorgeous turnarounds. Quickly shift-ing lines and contrasting hands conjure upAhmad Jamal on a "Sleigh Ride" full ofdelightful surprises. And a loping tempoadds to the Erroll Garner-esque stride andlocked hands of "Let It Snow," another oldchestnut freshly roasted into somethingoriginal.

"Snowscape," an impressionistic Rosen-thal original using the flexible rhythms oftoday with Horner's brushes swirling toemulate the title, is a perfect, modern clos-er, with the feel of a winter wonderland.Low, left hand ghostly echoes of "JingleBells" can be discerned if you listen closely.

Louie's Dream, Eli Yamin and EvanChristopher (The Jazz Drama Program),finds the pianist and clarinetist playingtributes to their musical heroes. There'seven a short poem in the middle of the pro-gram, "My Jazz Hero," recited by Yamin.

The title is that of a Louis Armstrong/Marty Napoleon tune which they play in a1920s style, with stride piano and NewOrleans clarinet, to open the album; it'sthen reprised as a ballad to close it.

Yamin gets orchestral on DukeEllington's "The Mooche," creating bigband like backgrounds under Christo-pher's ebony hues in a track dedicated toBarney Bigard and the Ellingtonians.Throughout the album Christopher dis-plays a virtuosic command of a variety ofclarinet tones and timbres, from the deepchalumeau register on much of "Mooche" towoody, sensual middle, to high pipingnotes. He even employs Sidney Bechet'strademark glissandi on his alluring tributeto Bechet, "You Gotta Treat It Gentle."

Other praises range widely: from a nodto Mary Lou Williams on her "What's YourStory Morning Glory" with Yamin stomp-ing out a boogie stride, to a surprisinglytender "Impromptu" by Christopher salut-ing John Coltrane. Yamin honors AmiriBaraka with a bluesy piece, "Baraka 75,"replete with stride section. The overlookedEllington gem "Azalea" is given a lyric bal-lad treatment in a joint tribute to Dukeand Armstrong, who recorded it together.

Ellington is again essayed, Yamin con-juring his piano style, in a tribute todancer, and Duke's granddaughter,Mercedes Ellington, on the infectiouslycute "Dancers in Love," which culminatesin stop-time finger snaps. Two numbersfrom a musical about women's suffragewith tunes by Yamin, Holding the Torchfor Liberty, are also included. "It's the WayThat You Talk" suggests early 20th centu-ry dance music like the cakewalk while"Don't Go Back on Your Raisin'" is a balladwith Christopher getting wistful in hisupper range with a fragile, vulnerable tone.

The album's dramatic highpoint is atribute to Mahalia Jackson. "Let His LoveTake Me Higher" begins with a procession-al tempo and builds into a rousing, gospelfinale with Yamin becoming churchy withrolling tremolos and Christopher wailinglike a lead singer in a choir.

Ted Rosenthal's trio has a CDrelease gig for Wonderland at Jazz atKitano on Dec. 6 and can also be heardat Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola on Dec. 3and Small's, Dec. 21. Eli Yamin's trio, with guests Evan Christopher andsinger Catherine Russell, appears atDizzy's on Dec. 17 and 18.

ESPERANZA SPALDINGVILLAGE VANGUARD / DECEMBER 3-8Bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding's musical output permeates with the sounds ofjazz, soul and classical music. Whether laying down a solid groove or singing her heartout, Spalding's talents are those of a musician much older than her years. As the firstjazz musician to receive the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, Spalding has becomea shining star of the jazz community's vanguard and a high profile presence in popu-lar music. Spalding's latest album Radio Music Society (Heads Up) was met with crit-ical acclaim and added two Grammy Awards to her collection. For her VillageVanguard performances, Spalding will be joined by her group "Chamber MusicSociety" blending jazz and classical textures into a sound that is all her own. EW

DAVID BERGER ORCHESTRAAPOLLO THEATER / DECEMBER 7If you've heard the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra's renditions of classicEllingtonia, you have David Berger partly to thank. Berger has transcribed more than500 Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn charts and was the conductor of the JALCOrchestra from 1988 to 1994. He continues to transcribe for and occasionally conductthe orchestra. He also leads his own Swing Era oriented Sultans of Swing, which hashad a long run of early Tuesday gigs at Birdland. Here his orchestra will play a holi-day program of Ellingtonia, including the Duke and Strayhorn's re-imagining ofTchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and selections from Ellington's Sacred Concerts.Guest performers will include dancer Savion Glover, singers Lizz Wright and PriscillaBaskerville, the Abyssinian Baptist Church Choir and Dance Theatre of Harlem stu-dents. GKDAVID LEONHARDTFLUSHING TOWN HALL / DECEMBER 20Pianist David Leonhardt's breakneck lyrical passages and soulful interpretations ofjazz classics have kept him in demand for more than 30 years. Whether leading histrio or performing with luminaries including late saxophonist late David "Fathead"Newman, Leonhardt's nimble touch and melodic sensibility are sure to shine. As aleader, Leonhardt's music generated tremendous praise. Dave Falconer ofJazzreview.com states: "David Leonhardt is a creative soloist and an intuitive andsympathetic accompanist." Leonhardt's commitment to instructing the next genera-tion of jazz artists is evident with his teaching posts at Lafayette College and The NewSchool where he has led workshops, given lectures and provided coaching sessions. For his concert in Queens, Leonhardt will bring his trio for a night of jazz-infused hol-iday classics. EWBROOKLYN JAZZ ORCHESTRALAFAYETTE AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH / DECEMBER 15A relative newcomer to New York City's jazz scene, the Brooklyn Jazz Orchestra wasfounded by drummer Paul Francis with a particular eye toward honoring the big bandera's repertoire. Continuing what is turning into a most-welcomed holiday tradition, the BJO will perform the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn arrangement ofTchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, in a program that also includes a selection of holidayclassics. While not a particularly well-known piece of Ellingtonia, the Nutcrackerarrangement is a delight and movements like "Sugar Rum Cherry" and "Chinoiserie"are essential listening for jazz lovers. Vocalist Carla Cook joins the ensemble, whichincludes artists like Frank Basile, Seneca Black and John Fedchock. SH

GREGOIRE MARETHARLEM STAGE / DECEMBER 4 This Carnegie Hall Neighborhood concert features the acclaimed jazz harmonicastylings of Gregoire Maret. Born in Switzerland to a Harlem-based African-Americanfather, Maret chose the instrument closely associated with his heroes TootsThielemans and Stevie Wonder. After formal training, Maret forged his own path incontemporary jazz, combining the influences of his idols while adding a romantic, serene approach. Following years as a prominent sideman with John Ellis & DoubleWide, Kurt Elling, Cassandra Wilson, Jacky Terrasson, Sean Jones, Marcus Millerand Herbie Hancock, he netted a Grammy award as a member of Pat Metheny'sensemble. Maret produced his eponymously titled and well-received debut recordingin 2012. He'll front an all-star quartet with drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, bassistBen Williams and keyboardist Christian Sands. MGN

BENNY GOLSONJAZZ STANDARD / DECEMBER 5-8The theme "Stories from the Past" gives Benny Golson free rein, since the tenor saxo-phonist/composer has many musical stories to tell. This elegant player and 1995 NEAJazz Master blossomed in the 1950s with the Jazz Messengers and then co-led TheJazztet with Art Farmer. He added mightily to the jazz canon with "I RememberClifford," "Killer Joe," "Stablemates" and "Whisper Not," among others. His Hollywoodstudio work included music for the TV series "M*A*S*H," "Mannix," "MissionImpossible," "Mod Squad," "Room 222" and "The Partridge Family." Golson had a cameoin 2004's The Terminal, a movie appearance linked to Art Kane's classic "A Great Dayin Harlem" photograph. His all-star quartet includes Mike LeDonne on piano, BusterWilliams on bass and Carl Allen, drums. KF

ANDRE MATOSCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / DECEMBER 6Melodically deft and harmonically challenging, guitarist Andre Matos' pure, contempo-rary sound aims to both test and charm the listener's ears. As a soloist or accompanist,Matos achieves the difficult task of molding a unique voice while serving the musicalintent of both the song and the ensemble. After graduating from the New EnglandConservatory, Matos moved to New York and began to perform and record with singerSara Serpa, drummer João Lencastre and as a member of the group Mikado Lab. Forhis performance on Dec. 6, Matos will be joined by his "4Tet," consisting of pianist PeteRende, bassist Eivind Opsvik and drummer Billy Mintz for a set that will explore theharmonic character of the modern jazz ensemble. EW

THE HOT SARDINESJOE'S PUB / DECEMBER 20Since it's unusual for young musicians to adopt vintage jazz, The Hot Sardines shouldbe seen as a rare bird. Taking cues from wartime Paris hot jazz through original NewOrleans swing, this New York band treats Dixieland and Tin Pan Alley tunes with aunique flair for the dramatic. You'll hear echoes of Louis and Lil Armstrong, FatsWaller or Django Reinhardt, a brass band complement, even tap dancer EddieFrancisco. Pianist/bandleader Evan "Bibs" Palazzo and Paris-born singer Miz ElizabethBougerol met via Craigslist, and the rest is history still in the making. They'll celebratethe release of their Live at Joe's Pub CD with Jason Prover on trumpet, bassist EvanCrane, violinist Pete Lanctot and several friends expanding the group to a little bigband. MGN

IVO PERELMANSHAPESHIFTER LAB / DECEMBER 13Like his South American counterpart, Argentine Gato Barbieri, Brazilian Ivo Perelmanhas a big, brawny tenor sax sound that comes out of the Coleman Hawkins/SonnyRollins tradition. But Perelman is no traditionalist; he's one of the world's more promi-nent avant-garde jazzmen. His preferred method is the essence of free jazz: begin play-ing with no preconceived forms, plans or written music. Yet like Rollins, he has both acommendable sense of form and an impish sense of humor that, combined with hisavoidance of extreme tonal distortions, informs his long improvisations with an inter-nal logic. At this gig he'll be celebrating the release of a handful of new albums, butplaying with the musicians, bassist Joe Morris and (rock) drummer Balasz Pandi, fromhis One (Rare Noise). GK

QUARTET SAN FRANCISCOSYMPHONY SPACE-LEONARD NIMOY THALIA THEATER / DECEMBER 18Quartet San Francisco is an eclectic string quartet that interweaves jazz, tango, rockand bluegrass into their inspired chamber music. Formed in 2001 by violinist and com-poser Jeremy Cohen, he is now joined by violinist Matthew Szemela, violist ChadKaltinger and cellist Kelley Maulbetsch. While they aren't the first string quartet toplay jazz, they've kept an improvisational spirit alive as they tackle challengingarrangements of music from many genres, playing with stunning synchronicity. Theygained critical acclaim for their 2009 CD salute to the music of Dave Brubeck. InSeptember they released their brilliant new CD Pacific Premieres: New Works byCalifornia Composers, which includes compositions by Cohen, Patrick Williams, VinceMendoza and Gordon Goodwin. The sound of surprise is always present in the QuartetSan Francisco's performances. KD

NEW JERSEY JAZZGary Walker, “Morning Jazz Host”, WBGO, 88.3 FM/wbgo.orgCARRIE JACKSONHYATT REGENCY / DECEMBER 18For Newark native Carrie Jackson, the spirit of song started at age six singing at MountCalvary Baptist Church and developed through school and piano and voice studies withDuke Anderson, eventually singing professionally with Anderson's big band. Comfortablein the musical worlds of jazz, pop, blues and gospel, Jackson and her Jazzin' All-StarEnsemble regularly visit the music of Basie, Ellington, Armstrong and Gillespie, spicingthings up with the best of the Great American Songbook. Jackson's new recording ATribute to Sarah Vaughan, Newark's Own (C-Jay) is a swinging, poignant look at TheDivine One, divinely done. She's sure to cover this and more in New Brunswick withorganist Noriko Kamo, bassist Thaddeus Expose and drummer Les McKee.

JAVON JACKSONSHANGHAI JAZZ / DECEMBER 13 AND 14DownBeat magazine says of saxophonist Javon Jackson, "there's no disputing hisimprovisational abilities, magnetic melodies and emotional heft!" With home trainingby his father who would take him to see Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt, to a selfdetermination to make music his life, Jackson would go on record and share stageswith Betty Carter, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Freddie Hubbard and Ron Carter and as a JazzMessenger with Art Blakey. Jackson's diverse abilities are well documented on record, most recently alongside legendary pianist Les McCann on Jackson's Lucky 13 (SolidJackson). Jackson will spend some Madison time with jazz, R&B, funk and fun along-side pianist Jeremy Manasia, bassist Corcoran Holt and drummer McClenty Hunter.

CRAIG YAREMKOTRUMPETS JAZZ CLUB / DECEMBER 8The dynamic abilities of saxophonist Craig Yaremko have taken him far from hisClifton NJ roots to shared stages with Geri Allen, Dee Dee Bridgewater, PaquitoD'Rivera, Jimmy Cobb and some of the area's finest big bands. He says that the chem-istry in the organ groups of George Benson, Jimmy Smith and Larry Young has left adeep impression on his playing. He shares that chemistry with listeners on his neworgan trio recording C Y O 3 (0A2), covering ground first tilled by Fats Waller,Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn and Freddie Hubbard, alongside originals like "OilSlick" and "Blue Fontaine." His session mates Matt King on organ, drummerJonathon Peretz and guitarist Vic Juris will join Yaremko on saxes and flutes for anight of shuffles, bebop, ballads, blues and perhaps a musical visit to Brazil.

DAVE DOUGLASNEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY / DECEMBER 2With numerous band projects, New Jersey-born trumpeter Dave Douglas has beenable to stretch the traditions of jazz while saluting the history of the music. He hascited diverse influences, from Billie Holiday and John Coltrane to Igor Stravinsky andStevie Wonder, along with the expected Miles Davis, Woody Shaw and Dizzy Gillespie.A Douglas composition or recording can give one a post-bop taste, a classical visit oreven a Dixieland or funk feel. This diversity led NJCU Jazz Director Ed Joffe to com-ment, "Dave Douglas represents the type of contemporary artist who speaks toyounger and older musicians alike. His big band compositions and arrangements aredifferent than any I've presented in 20 years of directing our ensemble. The sophisti-cation of the pieces shows a musical path and dedication sure to rub off on the stu-dents." It's sure to rub off on the Jersey City audience too.

EVER SINCE PLACING SECOND INThelonious Monk International Jazz

Saxophone Competition 22 years ago, EricAlexander has proven himself a standardbearer among new generations of tenorplayers. Capable of conjuring the steely fireof John Coltrane or the giant tone andrelaxed swing of Dexter Gordon, Alexanderhas established a voice that recalls jazz'spast even as he creates some of today'smost vibrant, exciting and swingingrecordings.

Despite his tenor bona fides, Alexanderactually began his studies on alto saxo-phone and initially enrolled at theUniversity of Indiana-Bloomington tostudy the horn. However, a professionalopportunity quickly led his career into anew direction. "During my freshman yearof college I had a chance to do a gig ontenor," he says. "I remember feeling socomfortable on the horn I decided to switchthen and there."

Shortly after his switch to tenor,Alexander felt the call of New York Cityand transferred to William PatersonUniversity in New Jersey in 1987. "I sim-ply wanted to be near New York City,"Alexander explains. "It was really puregood fortune that I ended up at a greatplace like William Paterson. I had greatteachers there—Rufus Reid, HaroldMabern, Norman Simmons, Joe Lovano,Ralph Lalama, Gary Smulyan and ToddCoolman—and I learned so much duringthose years." Indeed, not only didAlexander find himself in a rich education-al environment surrounded by inspiringteachers, he also embarked on a number oflongstanding collaborations with theseartists.

In particular, Alexander and Mabernhave established a particularly fruitfulsimpatico, marked by the pianist's fre-quent participation in the Eric AlexanderQuartet. Mabern's forceful keyboard chopshave been a consistently thrilling counter-part to Alexander's horn work and theirinterplay enlivens most of Alexander'sfinest albums. Most recently, this dynamicwas in full force on Touching, a ballad-leaning project that draws its inspirationfrom lesser-known tunes.

"While I was at WPU, Harold got mehooked on playing ballads and on findingrare or lesser-done material," Alexanderexplains. "I'm always looking for a way tokeep each successive project fresh and dif-ferent from the previous one. With that inmind, the idea for Touching came aboutnaturally."

As Alexander's career has progressed,

Eric AlexanderSwinging into the New Year

he has increasingly found himself servingas a mentor to developing artists, much asMabern and others did for him. An activeteacher, Alexander has been particularlyinnovative in his adoption of new methods, notably online lessons and ebooks, whichhe makes available via his website. Whilethe technology has changed the mediumdrastically, Alexander's aesthetic never-theless remains rooted in what he learnedfrom his tutors.

"I've been fortunate to play with artistswho are really passionate about the musicand who put 100 percent into everythingthey do," he notes. "With my students, I tryto share the lessons I've learned and thejoy of music that I got from my teachers. Ifeel that teaching is mostly about inspiringthe young players and getting them to real-ize that they, too, can make positive con-tributions to modern, straight-ahead jazzand that they will have a lifetime of joywith this great art form."

At Smoke this month, Alexander closesout 2013 with a holiday run that featurestwo bands. Starting off the week, he per-forms with his quartet featuring mainstaysMabern and John Webber and anchored byLouis Hayes. Hayes' presence is a particu-larly exciting addition to the quartet, asthe two artists have previously workedtogether on a variety of exceptional outings.

"I've admired Louis Hayes since I canremember!" Alexander says. "He's one ofthe all-time greats and it's an honor to playwith him. We've featured him for the firstthree nights of the holiday run for a fewyears now. It's a great way to get thingsfired up right away."

Leading into the New Year, Alexanderwill augment the band into a sextet, asJeremy Pelt and Vincent Herring join thehorn section and his longtime collaboratorJoe Farnsworth replaces Hayes. "The threeof us on the front line have worked togeth-er many times and share a common musi-cal sensibility," Alexander explains. "Forus, coming up with arrangements on thespot and just playing tunes that we allknow and love is a real treat. I'm reallylooking forward to being inspired by them."

The Eric Alexander Quartet per-forms at Smoke Jazz and Supper ClubDec. 23-25. From Dec. 26 through Jan.1, his sextet will play, featuring a spe-cial New Year's Eve celebration set.

ALTO SAXOPHONIST DAVE GLAS-ser is an unabashed bebopper who is

keen on making sure new generations ofplayers understand and appreciate therich tradition of jazz as their musical voic-es evolve. Starting in his teens, he absorbedthe lessons and values of the masters andnow he's paying them forward. Indeed, hehas come full circle as a jazz musician andeducator.

The lessons came from his work in theFrank Foster-led Count Basie Orchestrafrom 1989 to 1991, the Illinois Jacquet BigBand in the early to mid 1990s and his 11years in trumpeter Clark Terry's quintetbeginning in 1995 as well as musical asso-ciations or studies with Barry Harris, LeeKonitz (with whom he started studying atage 15), Eddie Locke and Earl May.

"There is a certain feeling in the music,a joyous exuberance. That feeling is whatreally attracts people to this music. Thosethree (Foster, Jacquet and Terry) carried itforward in a great way. Whether you arelistening to Louis Armstrong or Clark Terryor John Coltrane, that essence is what Iam trying to carry forward," Glasser says.

The native New Yorker, 51, has been apart-time faculty member at The NewSchool for 18 years, sharing his knowledgeof the music with developing players. "Iwork with them a lot trying to get into thecore elements of the music, which I wasexposed to through the people I playedwith. I try to bridge that gap a little bit.Early on in my career, I tried to get as closeas I could to whom I felt were the creatorsof that music." He says the dialogue andinteraction with students has helped hisown music evolve as well. "A lot of the stu-dents challenge me because they play in adifferent way. They enable me to play dif-ferently."

Glasser has recorded five CDs as aleader; the latest is the self-producedCrossover, which he is preparing for distri-bution. He brings his quartet to Smallswith Larry Ham on piano, Dave Robaire onbass and Carl Allen on drums. "Larry andI have been playing together for years. Heis kind of my right-hand man," Glassersays. "Dave was one of my students a fewyears back at The New School. He hassince moved to California but will be inNew York that week so I am very happy tohave him back on the bandstand with us.He's a very good, musical, bass player. I'veworked with Carl in many settings for along time. We really click."

Glasser says the Smalls gig will includeseveral originals, some choice jazz stan-dards and a tune or two associated withTerry since the gig falls on the trumpeter's

93rd birthday. "He will be in my thoughtsthat night. I'll be playing for him. Workingwith Clark in his quintet was like a dreamcome true. We were like two peas in a podat times because of the telepathic thingsthat we did musically," Glasser says. "Tohave the opportunity to be around him, tosit next to him and hear his swing, to learnhis musical concepts of group play andstage presence, as well as his relationship tothe audience, had a profound effect on me."

As a player, Glasser absorbed muchtechnically and stylistically from CharlieParker, Sonny Stitt, Johnny Hodges, PaulDesmond, Dave Schildkraut, Gigi Gryce,Benny Carter, Lee Konitz and Stan Getz.He says his music explores the full gamutof human emotions: joy, sadness, anger andthe blues. "People experience all of thesethings," he says. "That's what life is about. That is what they are really connectingwith and sometimes we are lucky enoughto tap into that. When that happens, themusic is more powerful than the musicians.

"The bottom line is that when peoplecome to hear this music they want to feelsomething, they want to feel good. If thepeople are smiling, happy and don't wantto go home because it really feels good to bethere, that's when I know I've done a goodjob. That's what drew me to the music andthat's the most rewarding thing. Peoplelike Clark Terry were masters of that; theBasie Band is all about that. It's about avibe that is unique to jazz."

The Dave Glasser Quartet withpianist Larry Ham, bassist DaveRobaire and drummer Carl Allen willperform at Smalls on Dec. 14

It's a wonderful worldSaxophonist Jane Ira Bloom has a long

history of working with Mark Dresser onbass and Min Xiao-Fen on pipa (a stringedinstrument played in China for more than2,000 years). But her Cornelia Street Cafégig Dec. 18 will be the first time percus-sionist Satoshi Takeishi joins them to playtheir innovative, internationally inspiredmusic in a quartet setting. "This is anextension of my interest in collaboratingwith world music musicians, of findinginteresting points of collaboration of Eastand West, where neither is distinct in itsown entity," Bloom says. "Mark and Minwill bring something new; we'll premierenew material. And we'll play new musicthat arises with musicians who are open.We explore the sound and silence with adifferent metabolism than is associatedwith my Western musical thought." Bloomdescribes her band mates as "sonic explor-ers, each with lots of experience. When youput that all together, lots of interestingthings happen." Not only will the music benew to the audience, Bloom expects to besurprised, too. "That's the point," she says."I'm interested in improvising with inter-national musicians. It's never boring and itkeeps us trying something new." The saxo-phonist delves into a more mainstreamside of jazz with her latest recording,Sixteen Sunsets (Outline), a mix of origi-nals and standards. "These are songs thatmean something to me, that have alwaysmoved me. I grew up listening to thatmusic and it's a touchstone for all my writ-ing." Although Bloom seems to be one ofthe few musicians who doesn't feel com-pelled to sing—"You wouldn't want to hearme," she says—the lyrics are the mainattraction for her. "I know all the words;that's equally as important as the melody. That's how you play a ballad: you have toknow what it means. It's not just notes; it'swhat the song is saying. I'm speaking thewords through my instrument, in a way."

Both sides nowArtists can find inspiration anywhere.

The spark for vocalist Jay Clayton's latestproject came from the obituary page in theInternational Herald Tribune. While on aplane, she noticed a piece about the com-poser Harry Warren. "I read his obituaryand found out he wrote hundreds of tunes, but nobody knows he wrote them," Claytonsays. Warren composed songs she's done foryears, such as "There Will Never beAnother You" and "The More I See You" andhits like "At Last," "I Only Have Eyes forYou" and "That's Amore." Before the planelanded, Clayton had decided there was atribute to Warren in her future. In choosingfrom his huge body of work, "I mostly didones I knew and love," she says. Claytonwill celebrate the release of the aptly namedHarry Who? A Tribute to Harry Warren(Sunnyside) at Jazz at Kitano Dec. 21, withsaxophonist Houston Person, pianist JohnDiMartino and bassist Boris Kozlov. Theclassically trained Clayton discovered jazzwhile in college. "I was turned on to Mingus,Monk and the others. When I got to NewYork in 1962 they were all there: EricDolphy, John Coltrane, playing hour-longsolos. Going to the clubs and hearing thegreats, that was my jazz school," she says.Besides being comfortable with straight-ahead jazz and standards, Clayton alsoexplored the wonderful world of improvisa-tion in the loft scene of the 1960s. "Musicdidn't start with a song: You learn it; youread it; you sing it. Before any of that, peo-ple just made it up. Little kids do it all thetime. It's not so weird." Because of her wide-ranging musical explorations, "It was hardto try to have people know what to do withme for years. In the middle of a standard I'dthink, I wish I could get free. Now I do both.I don't dissect and rewrite—if I love a tune,I want to stay true to it. That doesn't meanyou can't swing a sad song, but it can be soout of character to the message."

Family businessCount cellist Marika Hughes among the

people who seem destined for a life inmusic, with influences from every end ofthe spectrum. Her grandfather was therenowned classical cellist EmanuelFeuermann. When she was a kid, Hughes'parents ran an Upper West Side jazz clubcalled Burgundy, which was her introduc-tion to the art of the hang. "I rememberhearing Danny Mixon, Bobby Watson, somany others. It was a fun place to growup," she recalls. Hughes studied classicalmusic, starting with violin at age three. But the first time she touched a cello, almost a decade later, she realized thatwas the instrument for her. Hughes feltthat classical and jazz take the sameamount of focus, study and determination, and she didn't want to dilute her results bydividing her attention, so she didn't try herhand at improvisation until her 20s. As aprofessional musician, Hughes' experiencehas run the gamut from symphony hall tostreet busker, from backing fledglingsinger-songwriters and internationallyrenowned pop stars to performing on filmsoundtracks to fronting her own band,Bottom Heavy. "So many different opportu-nities have come up; I like to try thingsthat are challenging and new. I might notbecome an expert, but I can learn from it,"Hughes says. "I feel self-conscious aboutbeing called a jazz artist. I've played Indianmusic, but I don't call myself an Indianmusician." But she cites the music ofGeorge Adams and Don Pullen when talk-ing about what she wants to do withBottom Heavy: "I want the quality thatband had, the authenticity, the openness, the trust among the members. We try tobring that to our band in the way we exe-cute songs. It's unrefined a little bit, not toobeautiful; it has a growl in it." Hughes andBottom Heavy will debut some new materi-al and play some longtime favorites at theShapeShifter Lab on Dec. 16 in prepara-tion for recording early in 2014.

HOT FLASHES

Musician-Booker's Corner"I feel very fortunate to be involved with

the music program at Garage," remarksvocalist and booking agent David Coss."I've been singing there every Sunday fornearly 17 years and booking for nine years.I'm happy to have met so many great musi-cians like Benny Powell, Dakota Statonand Dee Daniels, many of whom haveended up on the bandstand with me duringmy gig."

By now a veritable New York City jazzinstitution and one of the few places to pro-vide consistent performing opportunities toyoung musicians, Garage Restaurant &Café has developed a strong track recordfor presenting high-quality swinging jazz. This artistic success is thanks in no smallpart to Coss' ongoing efforts. "I'm alwayshappy to book great young talent," heexplains. "I've given many young peopletheir first gig in New York and some ofthem have moved on to play with some topnames in jazz. I'm so proud of them. It'sbeen a great starting point for so many."

Originally hailing from the West Coast,Coss found his way to New York in theearly 1990s, though he was initially slow togig in the city. Garage proved to be his ownjumpstart into performing more extensive-ly in New York. "I had a friend who workedat the Garage and he said they needed abartender," Coss explains. "I said 'okay,'because I needed the work, so I went overand got hired. I started singing therebecause one day I was working andVirginia Mayhew and Dena DeRose wereplaying the brunch. They said, 'David, comeup and sing!' I was a little shy—things havechanged now!—but they coaxed me to getup there. This kind of stuck and the man-agement asked me to do it every Sunday."

The opportunity to sing weekly, com-bined with the bartending work, ultimatelyplaced Coss in the path to book the venue'sacts and bring a consistent sense of qualityto the roster. "The Garage is an interestingplace. It's a restaurant with music, ratherthan a jazz club with food," Coss observes."What I do is make sure that the peoplewho come into the place are hearing thekind of jazz that even non-aficionados willlike. So I'm a purist in the way I book it,because it needs to be enjoyable for every-body."

The booking work has also allowed Cossto collaborate with a multi-generationalswath of talents, thus enlivening his ownwork. "Sometimes I ask prospective musi-

cians who are requesting a spot on theschedule to join me on my gig," he notes."That's always exciting and so much fun forme and for the audience. I learn a lot fromthe musicians and they get a short lessonon how to play with a singer and get someexposure. It's a win-win!"

More crucially, Coss sees his efforts atGarage in a larger context, one thatexpands the jazz audience. "Many of ourpatrons wouldn't go to places like theVanguard or Smoke, but they come here toeat and while here they'll hear music andenjoy it," Coss explains. "I get to broadenthe music's fan base and expose people tothings they normally wouldn't hear. That'sa unique situation we have here." CatchDavid Coss at Garage every Sunday from6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

By Angelo Di Loreto, student at the Manhattan School of Music

Arguably, an infinite number of factorsand experiences can influence a musician'scomposing process. Everything from peo-ple, places, relationships, philosophies, lit-erature, or even food can directly inspiresomeone to write. NYC-based saxophonistPaul Jones is an example of a literature-inspired composer. On Dec. 11, he willpresent a series of new compositions atCornelia Street Café with a newly-formedsextet, all based on books he has recentlyread. However, he has taken the concept tothe next level. Jones has created each com-position by pairing up each letter of themusical alphabet with a letter from theEnglish alphabet and the melody of eachcomposition is formed from the letters ofeach book title.

"Applying the musical alphabet to eachbook title has supplied me with infinitestarting points for composition," Jonessays. When asked why he chose a sextet toexpress these pieces, he responded, "Iwanted to write for something I've neverwritten for before. I've drawn a lot of influ-ence from the Brian Blade Fellowship."The sextet comprises Jones on tenor saxo-phone, alto saxophonist Alex LoRe, pianist

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be

found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

A little while ago I took a walk down 52nd Street with a film crew that was working on adocumentary about the old Swing Street. They wanted me to point out the locations of thejazz clubs that had existed there. We strolled between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, remember-ing the locations of the Famous Door, the Downbeat, the Onyx, Ryan's, the Three Deuces andKelly's Stable. When we walked west toward Seventh Avenue, where the original buildingshave all been replaced by office towers, a uniformed guard stepped out of a doorway andinformed us that we weren't permitted to film on the sidewalk in front of that building. Thesidewalk was private property! So we walked on by the site where the Hickory House usedto stand without filming. We noticed that even the stars that used to be embedded in thesidewalk with names of famous jazz musicians had been removed. With all the honorarystreet name signs around Manhattan, it seems reasonable that 52nd Street should havesome monument to the great music that used to be played there. We seem to have developeda generation that doesn't know who Lester Young was!

Options abound this year for gifting jazzfans or filling up that extra space under theholiday tree. The CDs offer everythingfrom a really big box set to reissues in boxsets and individual discs, including thenewly hip retro option of vinyl LPs. At theother end of the spectrum, purely web-based music is also becoming prevalent.Performance DVDs have become morecommonplace too (just check out YouTube)but one documentary about a neglectedgiant of the mid-20th century stands out.And speaking of giants, new biographies oftwo of jazz's greatest are also available. And last but not least, there are, of course, new entries in that perennial recordingexercise: the holiday themed album.

SWINGING THE SEASONThe best new Christmas jazz album this

year is Let It Snow, New York Voices (FiveCent), a heady concoction with the hip, tight harmony singing of the vocal quartetcurrently celebrating its 25th year.Selections are a nice blend of pop songs likethe title track and traditional carols, allwith catchy jazz arrangements. KarrinAllyson, winner of the DownBeat CriticsPoll for Rising Star Female Vocalist, hasindependently released a holiday collec-tion, Yuletide Hideaway and the agelessJohnny Mathis is heard on Sending You ALittle Christmas (Columbia), featuringseveral duets with pop and countrysingers, including Natalie Cole.

A REALLY BIG BOX: HERBIE HANCOCK

The most ambitious and expansivealbum box set of the year is undoubtedlyHerbie Hancock: The Complete ColumbiaAlbum Collection 1972-1988 (Legacy) witha total of 31 albums, three of them consist-ing of two CDs, for a total of 34 discs.Included in the cube-shaped box is a 200-page color booklet with comprehensivediscographical data as well as criticalappreciations. Of particular interest tofans are the eight albums made forColumbia's Japanese subsidiary and neverbefore released internationally. Those con-

tain two live recordings: one of an electricHancock band (Flood) and one of the all-star quintet, V.S.O.P., with FreddieHubbard, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter andTony Williams. There's also a trio albumwith those last two. Most interesting ofthem all is a solo recording Hancock madein Japan, Dedication, wherein he playsacoustic versions of "Maiden Voyage" and"Dolphin Dance," as well as electric ver-sions, with an array of instruments, of"Nobu" and "Cantaloupe Island." Theentire box presents a very full, 360-degreeHancock, from pastel pianist to rockingfunk keyboardist and innovative band-leader.

RETRO, VINYL AND MONOREISSUES

Available before in stereo-enhancedreissues, the Columbia recordings of thefirst great Miles Davis Quintet/Sextet,with John Coltrane, are now compiled inthe set Miles Davis: The Original MonoRecordings (Legacy-9 CDs). Hearing themthe way they were originally recordedmakes you wonder what was so enchantingabout the stereo versions. Among them arethree Davis studio albums with the GilEvans Orchestra and the rarity, JazzTrack, which includes the sound track tothe French film noir "Elevator to theGallows" and three studio pieces recordedby the sextet that, soon after, did Kind ofBlue.

The short-lived mid-1950s labelBethlehem has also been revived in a retro-heavy project that offers releasing 10- and12-inch LPs in the original mono with thecelebrated cover art Bethlehem was knownfor, as well as on CDs that preserve thelength and format of the original albums. The initial releases—all first officialappearances since the 1950s—include thedebut Nina Simone release, Little GirlBlue, and albums from Oscar Pettiford,Charles Mingus, Booker Ervin, DexterGordon and singers Chris Connor andBobby Troup. The release of vinyl LPs aswell as CDs is not limited to reissueseither; several labels, most recently Mack

Avenue, have begun issuing high-qualityvinyl pressings of their new releases.

ERROLL GARNER REDUXOne of the most popular concert attrac-

tions in jazz in the 1950s and early 1960s,pianist Erroll Garner, whose Concert bythe Sea (Columbia) was once the best-sell-ing jazz album and continues to be cited onjazz "best" lists, has been largely ignored inrecent years. This situation should be part-ly rectified by the excellent bio-DVD ErrollGarner: No One Can Hear You Read (FirstRun Films). "My hope," says filmmakerAtticus Brady, "is to bring Garner's musicback to the world's attention." Garner's lifeand career are recounted, with numeroussnippets of his music that should havewatchers seeking out his albums. As SteveAllen, one of many talking heads, says,Garner was not part of the logical progres-sion of jazz piano history, making him "thegreatest, but not influential."

NOTHING PHYSICALThere are now purely aural options for

hearing jazz, from Internet radio archivesto iTunes style online stores. Many labelsare offering downloads for sale, as well asphysical CDs or LPs. Some are even put-ting together packages suitable for gifting, like Motéma's 10th Anniversary Joe LockeAlbum Pack, bundling three of the vibist'salbums, available at www.motema.com.

ON THE BOOKSHELFTwo major biographies of towering

giants of 20th century jazz have hit theshelves. Duke: A Life of Duke Ellington byTerry Teachout (Gotham Books) is a syn-thesis of biographical and critical views ofEdward Kennedy Ellington that accessesresearch, and researchers, not tapped inearlier biographies of Ellington. Teachout, the Wall Street Journal theater critic andauthor of a Louis Armstrong biography, writes with true narrative skill. The bookcovers many lesser-known aspects of theDuke's career. Kansas City Lightning: TheRise and Times of Charlie Parker byStanley Crouch (Harpers) is the long-awaited first volume of the cultural critic'smuch more than biography of the beboptitan. Crouch riffs and rants about historyand culture during Parker's youth, seem-ingly forgetting about his subject for pagesat a time. The book ends before Parkereven recorded as a leader. Volume Two isawaited. Also out this year is a revised ver-sion of Jazz Conversations by vocalist andhost of The JaRon Eames Show, JaRon K.Eames (self-published): transcripts ofinterviews from his long-running, epony-mous show on New York's Channel 34.More than 40 interviews are included, from musicians to producers, publicists, critics and even a comic or two.
