“Dog Days” were rare in the U.P.

Now I suppose you are wondering what I’m talking about and where am I going with this. The other day I heard

one of the TV weather persons saying that we were headed into the “Dog Days” of summer. A quick Google

check told me the phrase actually had nothing to do with dogs, or even with the lazy

days of summer. Instead, it turns out, the dog days refer to the dog star, Sirius, and

its position in the heavens. I think, in a nut shell, you could say that it is the hot, sul-

try, lazy part of the summer during late July & August. As I remember back to my

younger days in Upper Michigan, I can say with certainty that “Dog Days” were not

thought of very much. Our old swimming hole was the largest freshwater lake in the

world, Lake Superior. If you have ever stuck a toe in the big lake, you know that it

doesn’t warm up much. But beggars can’t be choosy. We had to make do with what

we had, and Gitche Gummee was it! In the photo enclosed you can see our favorite

spot for instant immersion into the cold, deep waters, which was the best way to get

used to the cold temperature. Once you got in, it wasn’t too bad. And, once you got

in, you stayed in or else go through the whole process again. This photo was taken

at Black Rocks in Marquette, Michigan. The Black Rocks are some of the oldest in

the world at about 2 1/2 billion years old. There was an Indian village close to the rocks. I would imagine many

young bucks jumped off these same rocks trying to impress the lovely maidens, just as we did 60 years ago, alt-

hough the maidens were long gone in 1957. One more thing, I don’t remember many bikini clad girls, as shown,

hanging around when we were doing this. I guess they are the modern version of the Indian maiden.

Just because the “Dog Days” are upon us doesn’t mean we have to keep our rides safely tucked in the shade.

There are plenty of fun days coming up, including the most fun of all, the Summer Spectacular! Everything is in

place for another great event. I would like you to know that Saturday, August 26 will be a dry day, and the cars

and spectators will be out in droves. The reason I can say this is that I have been doing my anti-rain dance out in

the back yard much to the chagrin of my wife who tells me to come inside and stop embarrassing her, the neigh-

bors, and myself. But, hey, it’s all going for a good cause. Seriously, let’s hope for a beautiful day to get our num-

bers back up and a good profit earned to give back to our community this fall. That’s what it’s all about! Just a

reminder that help is always needed at this event. If you haven’t signed up for a fun job, call Ron Willson or Tim

Hanna, and I’m sure they can find something for you to do.

One last thing has been bugging me (pun intended), before going on to other sections of this issue. Is anyone

else having trouble with the Japanese Beetle? This seems to be a recent problem, occurring just in the last year

or so. It must be widespread as Gerten’s had a large ad in the Sunday paper selling products to control the pesky

visitors. A couple of weeks ago, I put out a Beetle trap, and it is half full of hundreds of them. The worse part of it

is that they eat on our deck plants and a new Linden tree we planted last year. There is something to be said

about the fall season and the first hard frost. We have also had an influx of bunnies in the yard, but that’s another

problem. Enjoy the rest of the summer, and we will see you out there somewhere. DB

SOUTHERN CRUZER CAR CLUB MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES, July 19, 2017 - Taken by Duane Barclay

President Jerry Forness called the membership meeting of the Southern Cruzers to order at 7:00 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was observed.

Secretary’s report: A motion was made by Ron Willson and seconded by Arnie Carlson to accept the minutes of the June 2017 meeting as printed in the Cruz News. The motion was approved.

Treasurer’s report: Dick Lidbom read the treasurer’s report. Keith Biers made a motion to approve the report. The motion was seconded by Ron Donely, and the motion passed. A call for bills was made. Ron Willson submitted a bill for $2642.19 for the TSS assemblage license, and a bill for $2,000 for the fairgrounds damage deposit. Dick Peterson made a motion to pay the bills, seconded by Tim Hanna, and the motion passed. A total of $2,180.00 from TSS sponsors, and car pre-registration, was turned over to the treasury. The club welcomes Lake Marion Col-lision as a platinum sponsor.

Membership Chairperson: Jim Neher reported that club membership now stands at 96 (173 total). Current club rosters are available.

Events: Tim Hanna reported that the Cruzer Night Out event is on hiatus until September. The Lucky 13 car show is back on and will be held Saturday, July 29 at the Southtown center. The USAF Family Fun Day will be Sunday, August 13. We will meet at the Ikea parking lot for a 10 a.m. departure to the base. All who are going need to be on the Southern Cruzer list of attendees, and vetted by air force security. RSVP before July 25 to Tim. If you have at-tended this event before, Tim should, already, have your information. The Cannon Cruise will depart the Cannon Falls High school lot at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 4. Ed Saunders reported on the Kenny Park Festival which will be, Thursday, July 27, 5:30 - 7:30, 58th & Fremont Ave. So., Minneapolis. A discussion was held on whether to take a boat cruise or go to a performance at the Old Log Theater. A vote taken indicated that more members would prefer going to the Old Log.

Old Business: None

New Business: Jack Keenan sent out 8 hard copies of the Cruz News, down one from last month due to a member switching over to get his copy electronically.

TSS Business: Ron Willson reported that the fairgrounds assemblage permit has been obtained. A discussion was held on handing out veteran’s trophies at the show. The consensus of all attending was that due to the extra work involved, we should not do it at this time, but table the subject for further consideration. Worker tee shirts were available for pickup.

MSRA News: Ken Ingram reported that he has the entire income statement of the “Back to the 50’s” event availa-ble for inspection. Ken also reported that the south BTT50’s registration will be in place for the next 5 years, but the location will remain unknown at this time. Terry Stade reported that the Excel Energy show normally held at the Black Dog power plant is still on but will probably be held at the Highbridge plant in St. Paul sometime in Septem-ber. The next meeting will be at Apple Valley Ford in Apple Valley on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at 7 p.m. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Tim Hanna, seconded by Ron Willson, and the motion carried. The meeting was adjourned.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ON

YOUR SPECIAL DAY!

BIRTHDAYS

THE SUMMER SPECTACULAR IS ALMOST HERE!

In one month, we will be hosting what I consider to be the best car

show in the region. A lot of planning, tweaking, and scheduling has

gone into making this great show even better. With a little bit of luck

(see my Duane’s World article on page 4) we will have a nice day, and

everyone will be happy. The Dakota County Tribune recently sent out

a young reporter to get an interview about our event. The interview

took place in Dick’s Hot Rod Shop with some beautiful cars in the shop

making a nice back drop. In the photo, Maren Bauer is getting the full

scoop from Ron Willson, Dick Clemmer, and Tim Hanna. Photo taken

by the editor who also put in his occasional two cents.

NAPA CAR SHOW, SUNDAY, JULY 2

It was a perfect day to have a car show, and NAPA store owner, Brad Bergstressor and his crew made everyone feel welcome. From its start several years ago, the show keeps getting bigger. Scout Troop # 322 from Mont-gomery was on hand with their food trailer, and food tickets were given to all car entrants. The big expanse of the building offered plenty of shade, and the lawn chair riders were out in force. This show always gives one a chance to wander through the large store, and if you’re like me, you rarely come out empty handed. Photos by the editor

SOUTHERN CRUZER, NOEL JOHNSON, WINS A VETERAN TROPHY AT THE EAGAN MARKET FEST

Although the day tended to be a little hot, most of us found enough shade to make it bearable. The show cars start-ed rolling in at 3 p.m., and the count was 110 by the time it was over. There were many vendor stands placed around the parameter of the show area selling food & drink, vegetables, flowers, and even one gentleman selling small wooden cars. Something new was added this year: 2 veteran’s awards which consisted of a trophy and cash prize of $50.00. Cruzer member, Noel Johnson was the lucky winner of one of the awards and was seen walking around with a proud smile on his face the rest of the day. Fran Stade & Joy handled registration, and several club members assisted in parking. Thank you to Ken Ingram for working with the Eagan Fest people to make this nice event possible!
